SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES
On your marks, get set, go for the sixth Joe’s Jog! FAMILIES and young children are invited to join a charity mile-long fun run to support the work of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT). Joe’s Jog, now in its sixth year, will take place before the Mattioli Woods Rothley 10k running event which takes place in the Leicestershire village on Tuesday 11 June, starting at 6.15pm. The inclusive and family-friendly fun run gives families and children aged seven and over the chance to be part of the Rothley 10k evening. Joe was 14 when he collapsed and died suddenly while out jogging near his Rothley home. He was a victim of SADS – sudden arrhythmic death syndrome – a heart condition which can strike anyone at any time, particularly otherwise fit and healthy young people. Since Joe’s death, the JHMT continues to raise awareness of SADS and sudden heart deaths. The charity provides free CPR training, helps to fund community defibrillators and campaigns for better understanding of SADS. The JHMT also runs the Inspire Awards, a small grants scheme that helps inspire young people to fulfill their potential – something which the victims of SADS are cruelly denied. Steve Humphries, chair of the JHMT, said: “Everyone’s welcome to come along and be part of this special evening in Rothley village - perfect for families, from babies in buggies to mums, dads taking part with their children and friends. It’s also good to see the fun run is becoming popular with local scouts and guides groups, junior sports clubs and schools. You can run, walk or jog but most important is that you just enjoy taking part! at the 6th JHMT Joe’s Jog family fun mile event. This also brings people together in memory of Joe and helps to raise vital funds for JHMT's ongoing work to reduce the incidence of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) in young people. “ “Nearly 400 runners took part last year – the most participants since we started Joe’s Jog – raising more than £1,400. “There was such a great community spirit. There was a real buzz to the evening and everyone had a fabulous time. We are hoping for a huge turnout as the event is becoming more popular every year.” The event will start at 6.15pm in Woodgate in Rothley. Advance entry costs £5 for adults and £3 for children. On-the-day entry costs £10 for adults and £6 for children. Juniors running without parental supervision need to be at least seven years old. Families are also welcome to run or walk the course with smaller children in buggies. All funds raised from Joe’s Jog will go towards JHMT’s vital work to create a heart safe community for all.
To take part in Joe’s Jog, enter online at: http://jhmt.org.uk/joes-jog To find out more about the Trust’s work, to get involved as a volunteer, or to learn how to apply for the Inspire Awards or CPR training for your sports club, visit www.jhmt.org.uk - More information about the Mattioli Woods Rothley 10k is available at www.rothley10k.com

Calling all knitters -
Mountsorrel Parish Council
Keep those knitting needles clicking for the Big Knit!
The Big Knit campaign continues through 2019 and Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to keep knitting or join in for the first time!
MEETINGS OF THE PARISH COUNCIL/COMMITTEES Mountsorrel Parish Council, AGM and planning applications – Monday 13th May 2019 @ 7pm
Whether a knitting ninja, purling pro, crochet connoisseur or just keen to have a go it’s time to get wild about wool and join the Big Knit. Now in its 15th year, the campaign needs to recruit more knitters to help create an impressive 1.6 million hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, Age UK receives 25p, and that money helps the Charity support older people who are facing later life alone.
Recreation & Amenities committee – Tuesday 28th May 2019 @ 7pm The above meetings will be held in the Parish Room, Leicester Road, Mountsorrel
Tony Donovan, Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland said: “We need local people to join us and help knit as many miniature hats as possible to help us hit our huge 80,000 local target by July 2019. It’s such a fun campaign to get behind and it does so much to help older people in our area. “The money raised will make a big difference to the lives of older people by funding our hugely important services and classes. These services, which include Day Care, dementia support, Men in Sheds and befriending amongst so many others, give local older people the chance to come along and make friends, learn new skills and most importantly have fun.”
ANNUAL PARISH MEETING All electors in the parish of Mountsorrel are entitled to attend your ANNUAL PARISH MEETING and are invited to be present at the next one to be held on Monday 20th May 2019 at 7pm in Mountsorrel Memorial Centre, Leicester Road, Mountsorrel under the Chairmanship of Mr S Haywood Chairman of the Parish Council. The Annual Parish Meeting may by law discuss all parish affairs and pass resolutions about them. EVENTS AT MOUNTSORREL MEMORIAL CENTRE Psychic Night Pete Barry - April 26th

A Chesterfield Doctor Has Helped Hundreds Of People In India Have Access To Vital Eye Services.
Kantilal Jain, who is a consultant ophthalmologist at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, travelled to Rajasthan, India, where he and a team helped around 400 people over two days as part of charity work.
The people they helped do not have easy access to eye services and were in need of cataract operations or glasses. Mr Jain, who is also a medical director at Lumivision Eye Clinic, said: “I was really, really proud and I am going to go again next year. People were able to have their eyes examined for free and Mr Jain said he saw around 120 people by himself. Of the 400 people who attended, around 50 were listed as needing a cataract operation and 200 needed glasses. Many of the people they helped were aged 50 and above. A Chesterfield Royal Hospital spokesperson said: “We are lucky to have some terrific surgeons, consultants and healthcare professionals. We are immensely proud of Kantilal and his like-minded colleagues for everything they do at the Royal and, as ambassadors for the hospital, they are a credit to their profession. And a Lumivision spokesperson said: “We are particularly proud to see our surgeon Mr Jain leading the way in delivering his ophthalmic expertise to help the less fortunate.

The talk at our meeting on the 18th of this month was given by Mr P Tyldesley, Director of the Bradgate Trust, on the subject of ‘Colourful Characters of the Bradgate Park’. Certainly some of their names were equally colourful. For example, in the reign of Edward the Confessor the land was owned by a Mr Ulf. Later it was owned in turn by the Beaumont family, the de Quincys, de Ferrers and lastly the Greys – rather a let-down namewise, it would seem, but they stayed for 500 years. In 1928 the Park went up for sale and bought by Charles Bennion, who gave it to the people of Leicestershire. The first mention of a deer park dates form 1241, when it was much smaller than it is now. Over the years bits of land were added and other bits taken away – usually to pay for debts incurred by the family. Cropston reservoir occupies one of the latter ‘bits’. About the time it passed to the people the council had added more land, and as well an agreement was reached with the trustees of Bradgate Wood to bring that under the Bradgate Trust as well. The house was the ambition of the son of Elizabeth Woodville who was one of those powerful women ultimately of the royal household. It was her grandson who finally finished the project in about 1520. It was occupied until 1732 when the new owner prefered one of his other houses. The Grey family were one of those moderately successful families of their
The outstanding name, of course, is Lady Jane, the ‘9-days queen’, though for four days before she was proclaimed the country was in limbo. This was thanks to Henry VIII declaring children of his previous marriages illegitimate. Nobody knew where they stood when he shoffled off. Mary stepped in and order was restored. At this moment the Greys demonstrated their political versitility which resulted in yet another family talent – having their heads chopped off. The last Grey of note seems to have been George Harry (1828-1883), who had a bit of a gambling problem; he took up owning race horses, and even had a race track around Old John tower. He actually lived in Field Head House, and when he died he left it to his widow to restore the family fortunes. The ‘Friends’ meet in the Woodhouse Eaves village hall at 7.30 p.m. once a month as well as organising visits in the summer.

age. They seemed to be politically adaptable, changing sides several times during the Civil War, though not always at the right time. They were good at having their lands confiscated, then restored to them. They slowly accumulated titles, often it seems by marriage, and they were good at not producing heirs. This latter strength meant that often distant relatives occupied Bradgate in the absence of an heir, and did result in 1732 when the relative preferred his current dwelling to Bradgate House.

Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride returns for its 9th year Every mile cycled brings us closer to a cure The Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride is back again for its 9th year running. With up to 300 cyclists taking part last year, the organisers Alex’s Wish are pleased to announce it will be taking place on Sunday, 12th May. This year’s main sponsor is Glynis Wright and Partners, with additional sponsorship from Nisa (Bradleys store) in Rothley, The Woodmans Stroke Pub in Rothley, United Carpets and Jay Webb Consultancy with Pedal Power as the on-site bike specialists. Emma Hallam Charity Founder and Alex’s Mum says “It would be so lovely to have you come along and join us this year - you’ll get a healthy dose of fresh air, enjoy spectacular views around the stunning Charnwood Forest whilst cycling for an incredibly worthwhile cause. It’s a fabulous opportunity to get back into cycling again after the winter months, so whether or not you are a keen cyclist, there’s never been a better time to dust of your bike in time for the summer months. We have a 10-mile, 20-mile and a 50-mile cycle route. The 10-mile route will provide an entry level distance for first time participants, whilst the 50-mile route will be a longer and more challenging route for those who want to push themselves further and the 20 and 50 mile includes a steep climb up Beacon Hill road. We are incredibly well supported locally and it’s always nice to see our supporters out and about on their bikes, having fun and raising much needed funds for Alex’s Wish. The start and finish line is at The Rothley Centre in Rothley, Leicestershire with the route taking place on open roads. “The route is well sign-posted,” explains Emma, “and because the event takes place on a Sunday morning the roads tend to be quiet with traffic. At the end, you’ll be treated to complimentary yummy home cake cakes and refreshments – a perfect thought to get you through the ride.” This is a sponsored ride in aid of Alex’s Wish, a registered charity set-up to raise vital funds for an incurable childhood muscle wasting disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Alex’s Wish are investing in innovative medical breakthroughs to help all children lead a longer and more fulfilled life with the aim to finding a cure. All money that is raised through registration fees and sponsorship goes direct to this fantastic cause. The event organisers would also welcome volunteers to marshal and help out with refreshments on the day. If you are unable to ride but would like to help, please get in touch. To register for this fantastic and worthwhile cause, take advantage of the discounted early-bird entry fee to register before 30th April – the easiest and quickest way to so register is at www.alexswish.co.uk/event/charnwoodforest-cycle-ride or email zoe@alexswish.co.uk
Charity Link is looking to make it a record-breaking year for the Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge! Charity Link, an organisation supporting people in need across Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire, is looking for individuals and groups of family, friends and colleagues to take part in its annual Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge, which this year takes place on Sunday 22nd September. Launched in 2016, Charity Link’s Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge is a unique 16 mile walking or running event which begins and ends at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire. The challenge takes in the peaks of Beacon Hill, the little known Bardon Hill (which is Leicestershire’s highest point and just 88ft short of a mountain), and the famous ‘Old John’ Tower in Bradgate Park itself. Last year’s event saw 60 challengers take part with over £8,000 raised to help provide essential items, including food, clothing and beds for local people in need. Charity Link hopes that more than 100 challengers will take part in the 2019 event and that over £10,000 will be raised which will provide essential items to ensure that vulnerable local people are warm, safe and fed. New for this year is the ‘Corporate Team Cup’ competition for local businesses. Dogs who are up to the challenge and their well-behaved owners are also encouraged to take part, with medals presented to the humans and special goodie-bags for the four-legged finishers. Individual registration is £15 with challengers pledging to raise £100 via sponsorship or fundraising. Full details on the event and registration forms can be found at www.charitylink.org/leics3peaks or call 0116 222 2200.

Highcliffe Amateur Theatrical Society Spring Play 2019
HATS Enjoy Another Success Following on from our very successful pantomime “Babes in the Wood earlier this year, we attended the annual pantomime Alliance Awards Ceremony.
COMEDY, LAUGHTER, MEMORIES, TEARS. EXPERIENCE THEM ALL WITH “THE VICAR OF DRIBLEYâ€? A tribute to the Iconic BBC comedy, by Ray Evans. Rehearsals are well under way now, and things are getting very confusing in the village of Dribley. The established villagers are set in their ways and wary of the new vicar being a female. However, she soon wins them round, and starts a wonderful, confusing, comedic friendship with Alice. The villagers rally round to support Alice in ensuring her donkey sanctuary is not suddenly a housing development, and wait with baited breath to see her romance with the delightful dopey Hugo flourish, causing David great concern. Mrs Cropley’s fantastic culinary skills are innovative to say the least, whilst Owen is love sick and Frankie is just officious. Not forgetting the wonderful Jim, no no no no no no, yes. Who could forget the lovable rascal. Neither can we ignore Georgia Hopkinson’s devious plans. Watch out for the Antiques road show, we can’t promise you David Dickinson but we do have an expert or two. Have we tempted you, let’s hope we have. Come and have a fantastic night with some good old fashioned humour watching this iconic play. Please note that this production contains some adult humour. Tickets available now. Don’t miss out on a wonderful night. Dates: May 16th, 17th and 18th at 7.15pm. Doors will open half an hour before each performance. Venue: Birstall Social Club, Wanlip Lane, Birstall LE4 4JS. Tickets: ÂŁ7.00, ÂŁ6.00 concession. Box office: Mobile 07934 204837 and 0116 2209594 or email hatstickets@hotmail.com - www.facebook.com/hatsamdram
The awards nights are a wonderful way of Amateur Dramatics Groups coming together to celebrate each other’s successes. It is also a fun night with lots of congratulations between different groups. It is encouraging and essential that Amateur dramatics are recognised as a fabulous form of entertainment. Once again we were delighted to receive positive acknowledgement for our performance and for our fantastic costumes. Although we did not win an award outright, we received two nominations in different categories. Our first nomination was in relation to “best costumes. A fabulous credit to Di Butler who works so very hard with all of our costumes for all of our productions. Our second nomination was in relation to “best female support. This went to Sue Withers for her role of the ever eating Friar Tuck. Congratulations to both of them.

ROTHLEY PARK RAISES £6000 FOR GENT’S CAPTAIN’S CHARITY Rothley Park Golf Club’s 2018 Gent’s Captain, Paul Roberts, recently presented a cheque for £6000 to the Jamaica National Children’s Home, raised throughout the year from a variety of golfing and social events. “My charity for 2018 was chosen following a visit to Kingston, Jamaica four years ago, when my mother-inlaw, Lee, took me to visit the JNCH, where she worked for five years as Director – tasked to turn around a struggling and underfunded, but vital institution.’ Paul explains: “The Home now accommodates over 80 children, nearly half of whom have severe and multiple physical disabilities. Children are provided with a safe, nurturing living environment and a sound education, which has led to many former residents going on to successful careers and satisfying adult lives. The money raised came primarily from my Captain’s Day, with its corresponding Jamaican theme, including reggae music, patties, bun-and-cheese and Red Stripe at the 12th hole and prizes of Jamaican hampers, with delicious Caribbean food and fantastic music to follow in the evening. This was supplemented by various other, smaller fund-raising events throughout the year. The generosity of all those who have contributed needs to be fully recognised and I would like to thank everyone at the club for their support.

“The home has recently been issued with a notice to upgrade and repair its electrical and security systems, for which previously they had no funds set aside. As a result of the funds donated, they are now able to have this essential work carried out, which will allow them to continue their vital work with Jamaica’s underprivileged and needy children. “

Two and four-legged supporters are expected to attend Canine Partners’ Big Martinshaw Bluebell Walk from 11am on Sunday 28 April. The event will raise vital funds for Canine Partners, a national charity that trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence. The dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and helping to undress a person. They can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency. The Big Martinshaw Bluebell Walk will start from the car park on Markfield Road, Ratby and feature two stunning routes taking participants either two or three miles through the Woodland Trust’s Martinshaw Woods in Leicester, featuring stunning landscapes and local wildlife. There will also be a raffle and a children’s quiz. Tickets cost £4 for adults, £2 for children and £10 for families. There are hard surfaced tracks available that are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. For more information about Canine Partners’ Big Martinshaw Bluebell walk and to buy tickets please email Kathleen Hodkinson on khodkinson9@gmail.com or visit caninepartners.org.uk/bigbluebellwalks
The fun and informal sessions are being run in partnership with Leicestershire County Council and Leicestershire and Rutland Sport. They’re aimed at women over 16 who simply want to turn up and play without any coaching or commitments. Samantha Chamberlain, community sport and physical activity development officer said: “These sessions are perfect for anyone who enjoys playing netball but doesn’t want to play in a competitive environment. “It’s not a coached session, people are able to simply turn up, pay a small fee and play a game of netball.” Sessions cost £3 and all you need to do is turn up and bring appropriate footwear. The sessions get underway on Thursday April 18, 6.30pm-7.30pm. If you want more information, contact Sam Chamberlain at samantha.chamberlain@ charnwood.gov.uk or 01509 632534. The Charnwood Gardener
Rothley Bowling Club
Quirky Alternatives for Pots and Baskets
Rothley Bowling Club continues to provide a Sport in which all ages can participate in and enjoy
Ah, May. The garden is building to a crescendo, new colours and forms appearing daily and everything buzzing with life. With the risk of frost almost gone, gardeners’ eyes are drawn to the rows of bedding plants appearing in garden centres and supermarkets, and thoughts turn to sumptuous displays in pots and baskets. Quite why we obsess over growing plants in such tricky conditions (there’s not much that’s harder to keep alive than a needy annual in a hanging basket) is beside the point - the May bank holidays are boom time for plant sellers.
Playing Bowls has been medically proven that it improves your general health and helps to strengthen your immune system. Bowls is not only a sport but you can enjoy an active social life throughout the year, have an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Why not come along to our Bowls Club located at the rear of the library, adjacent to the Tennis Club, where we are holding Social Bowling on Wednesday Afternoons, commencing 15th May 2019 - 3pm onwards.
But perhaps you’re a little tired of the same old arrangements of petunias, and perhaps you’d like to reap more benefit from your hard work. Here’s some alternative ideas for planters that should stand out from the crowd:
All you need is a pair of flat shoes, we will provide you with the necessary equipment to get you started and there will be experienced players on hand to help you.
Perennial Salads - Plant up a decent-sized pot with these perennial plants for delicious additions to a summer salad. An arrangement of salad burnet and red-veined sorrel, interspersed with the edible petals of annual Calendula, looks beautiful and should be happy for a number of years with some care. A tasty addition to a BBQ area for easy pickings!
Further information is available from one of the members of the Management Team: Geoff Hall - Team Captain - 0116 2303 266 Mavis Barratt - Development Officer/Fixture Secretary - 0116 230 4673
Herbs - Many herbs are Mediterranean in origin so are well suited to the drier conditions of a pot. A combination of rosemary, purple sage and lemon thyme smells as good as it looks. Great outside the back door.
Tomatoes & Strawberries - Plant up a basket with Tumbling Tom tomatoes and a few strawberry plants and you’ve got an interesting feature for a bare wall or fence (plus, a readily-available handy snack for when you’re gardening!). Add some love-in-a-mist or cornflower seeds for an extra splash of colour and to increase pollination. MAY TIP: May is the ideal time to fill up the veg plot. If you’re growing onions, make use of the space between them for quick-growing crops such as radish – they’ll be ready before the onions crowd them out.

ANSTEY CHESS CLUB League update - We are now sat in 6th position as I type (25/3/19), having played a game more than those around us. This is one of our best positions so far and we are trying to keep our head afloat and avoid the wooden spoon. Our cause was helped by a wonderful 2.5-1.5 win away at Market Harborough. The 45 minute journey became worth it, in the end! A win for myself and Mick Squire, with a 'team draw' agreed by Mick Sandham. (Team draw is agreeing a draw in a winning position to ensure the win for the team). A word for John Whitmore too, who travelled all that way and lost. (Sorry John!) Free Chess Sessions - I am still running informal sessions for beginners or slightly more experienced players on Saturday mornings from 10am-1pm, with the help of Anstey Community Library. These sessions are for anybody that would like to learn to play chess, has some experience playing chess, or already knows how to play and would like to play some friendly games. These sessions are still free of charge. April Club Nights/Fixtures Why not come and join us on a club night? 25th April - HOME fixture vs Loughborough 3 **The above fixture may have to be moved to Wednesday 24th, due to a skittles fixture clash** Please check if you wish to attend
Club Nights tend to be relaxed and quite often, we do a little bit of coaching with our league players. When players have lost, drawn or maybe even won, myself and Mick Sandham give the players practical advice on what they could/should have done. We then usually move on to playing some friendlies amongst ourselves. League matches are a little more intense and require the room to be silent or very little ambient noise. You are welcome along on any night so please pop along to see what we're all about. New players are welcome along at any time - regardless of standard.

I’ve got the freedom of my home back... I felt so frustrated at not being able to use the upstairs rooms in my home and unhappy that I had to have my bed in my front room, instead of sleeping in my own bedroom, but I no longer felt safe using the stairs. My stairs are quite steep and narrow and I was doubtful if a stair lift could be fitted, but they came and measured up and everything was dealt with and fitted in no time at all! Everyone was extremely helpful, polite and pleasant to have in my home and the results could not be better. I would certainly recommend Candor to anyone considering a stair lift.
