The Pollard family from Barrow-upon-Soar visited the event for the first time and son Rocco announced, “the bouncy castle was the best thing, and then I won a coconut!” John Sanderson of Loughborough was running the extremely busy Hearty Hotdogs stand on the village green. “There’s a very good atmosphere here, a great vibe, it’s friendly and well organised. It gets better each year and I’ll definitely be back in 2020.” The extended Carter family from Queniborough, Sileby and East Goscote were visiting for the third time. “We’ve loved the great variety of stalls, live music and the soap box race. The cake stalls and handmade fudge have given us something to take away.” Erin Long, age four, visited from Ratby with her family and won a Little Red Riding Hood in a tombola. The family’s favourite moments? “Dancing to the band; it’s such a lovely village and event.” Visiting from nearby Barrow-upon-Soar, the Maclean family loved the bike buddies, the dog show, the archery, the clowns with giant bubbles and the donkey ride. “And we’ve eaten samosas and peanut butter brownies and bought some honey to take home.” With over two thousand visitors another piece of good news from the event was from the Charnwood Communities First Responders, “The biggest injury we’ve had to deal with is a wasp sting.” Other highlights of the Mountsorrel Revival included the parade, the combined churches events and the fun run; competitions for fancy dress, baking and decorate a biscuit; tug-of-war and the gospel choir; the Viking re-enactment and the model railway at the Memorial Centre. The event takes place with the support of the generous sponsors, the Parish Council, local businesses and money raised from stall holders and advertising in the programme. In order to keep the event running more volunteers and especially committee members would be very welcome for 2020.

PrioritiesSpeeding: We have received reports of vehicles speeding in a number of the villages. We patrol the roads regularly and will be undertaking speed enforcement in the future. Antisocial Behaviour: We have received complaints of ASB and cannabis use on a road in Rothley. We are regularly patrolling the area and are consulting with the housing provider involved in order to resolve the situation. Vehicle Crime: There have been a number of car thefts/thefts from motor vehicles across Charnwood. In particular around the areas of Bradgate Park and Rothley. We will be patrolling all areas as best we can to help prevent further crime.

Neighbourhood Watch We are keen to reinvigorate our local Neighbourhood Watch Schemes and Sgt Chris Wharton is working on a project to review our current position and to identifying key local contacts who he will liaise with to bring the scheme back to the fore and make it fit for purpose of supporting our local communities.

Vehicle Crime Don't let thieves get an easy ride. Follow these simple rules to protect your car: 1. Lock your vehicle Locking your vehicle, even when filling up or parked on your drive, greatly reduces the possibility of it being targeted by an opportunist thief. Even if you have locked your vehicle, check you haven’t left any windows or the sunroof open. It is actually illegal to leave your vehicle running unattended while you de-ice it or warm it up in cold weather. If someone takes it while it’s left like this, your insurer won’t pay out because you won’t be covered. 2. Keep the keys safe Vehicles today are by and large more difficult to steal than ever, unless the thief can access your key or fob to clone them. Keep your keys safe, out of view when at home, and away from your front door. It’s not uncommon for car keys to be stolen from inside your home by thieves fishing for them with a stick and hook through the letterbox.

* * -

37,850

3. Fit good in-car security locks Bear in mind that built-in steering locks aren’t necessarily thief-proof. Many can be forced and broken. Fitting a Sold Se-cure steering wheel, gear lever or clutch pedal security device can give your vehicle added protection. 4. Double-check electronic locking Electronic devices can be used to jam the electronic signal from your key fob to lock your vehicle. Always manually check your vehicle has locked before walking away. If unsure, lock it manually, then scan the immediate area for anyone hanging around. If a potential thief who’s watching feels they’ve been spotted, they’ll probably move off. 5. Park responsibly It’s always advisable to avoid parking in dark and secluded areas. It’s worth an extra five or ten-minute walk if it means your vehicle is left in a well-lit and busier street. And if possible, always try to park in illuminated and staffed car parks or those with a Park Mark safer parking award. 6. Watch for illegal tow trucks Thieves often attempt to lift vehicles from the street, literally. So, if you see a towaway crew acting suspiciously – especially if their vehicle isn’t branded or if they’re not in uniform – then please report it immediately. As with every report of suspicious behaviour made in good faith, we’ll never blame anyone for calling us if it proves unfound-ed.

Edward Argar MP

Local author Kerry Young visits Rothley Community Library

Member of Parliament for Charnwood While we are fortunate in our area that levels of crime are relatively low, compared to other areas, local residents are understandably concerned when we do fall victim to crime or we hear about break-ins or car thefts, and I know residents of Rothley & Mountsorrel have expressed concerns about this to me in recent months. Recently, I had the pleasure of one of my regular catch-up meetings with our local Police in Leicestershire, on this occasion with the Police’s Charnwood Neighbourhood Commander, Inspector Mark Botte, who set out to me his plans to ensure that local residents and businesses continue to be kept safe through effective and visible local policing, support for victims, and positive engagement and communication by the Police with our local communities. As both Charnwood’s local MP, and as a Justice Minister, I see first-hand the amazing work our Police Officers do day-in, day-out for our communities, both in our County, and across the country. While day-to-day funding and operational decisions sit with our Police and Crime Commissioner, Labour’s Lord Bach, and our Chief Constable, Simon Cole, effective policing requires a strong commitment, and partnership, at local and national level, as well as all of us playing our part through taking crime prevention measures. The nature of crime is changing, and policing must adapt to meet those changes, but it is still vitally important that we see Officers out and about on our streets. When I talk to constituents in Rothley & Mountsorrel about policing, they tell me they want to see more Police Officers out and about, visible in the villages, preventing and tackling crime. With this in mind, the new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s, recent announcement of plans to recruit an additional 20,000 Police Officers, starting in September, is very welcome news.

Pao, Kerry Young's mesmerising first novel, celebrates Jamaica's ethnic melting pot, and the lost world of Kingston's Chinatown. There’s a great opportunity to hear Kerry talk about her work and ask her questions: she has generously agreed to come and talk with us on Wednesday, 9th October from 7-8.30. You’re asked to read Pao, and if possible Gloria and Show me a Mountain, which together make up her trilogy set in Kingston, Jamaica. ‘Young’s prose perfectly captures the lilting, multilingual rhythm of Jamaica and strengthens her character’s profound humanity as they sin, struggle and triumph. Pao is a coming-of-age story of both its title character and the country in which he lives, an evocative portrait of political change and personal transformation.’ San Francisco Book Review

Since I was first elected as Charnwood’s MP in 2015, I have campaigned for Leicestershire to get its fair share of the funding pot, for our local Councils, local schools, and our Police, so I will be campaigning to ensure our county gets allocated a fair share of those new Officers. Our local Police do a great job for all of us who live and work here and deserve our gratitude. A share of these additional Officers, once they are recruited and trained, will help Leicestershire Police do even more to prevent and tackle crime.

The Family Obstacular - a Big Day Out! BRADGATE ROTARY’S Family Challenge Day takes place on Sunday 15th September. The Family Obstacular or Family Funtacular will be taking place in a new location in the Charnwood Forest. Fun and Family are the key words, this is NOT a mud, blood guts and glory event, but something to bring out the competitiveness without the pain while raising funds for some of our local charities. Alongside the challenges, there will be opportunities to enjoy a day out with stalls, bouncy castle and food options. Not everyone will need to take part in the challenges to appreciate the day, but we suspect you might want to anyway. So pencil on the family calendar the date and watch this space for more details of the Family Obstacular on Sunday 15th September.

Charnwood’s 'Big Switch' offers energy bill savings Residents in Charnwood are being offered the chance to sign up to the ‘Big Switch’ with the possibility of saving more than £240 a year on energy bills. The borough council has launched the Charnwood Big Switch, a collective switching scheme to help residents change energy suppliers with ease and get a better deal. Cllr Paul Mercer, lead member for housing said: “The Council is committed to helping residents and this scheme could help them get a better deal on their energy bills. Switching suppliers can be daunting even though they may be paying too much for their energy. “By joining the collective switching scheme residents will be able to switch suppliers with ease and save money on their bills.

The Charnwood Gardener

A Wild Controversy

Gardeners like to think that once they've pulled on their wellies, slipped out of the back door and firmly ensconced themselves in the potting shed they're free from the maddening din of the modern world. 'No divisive rhetoric or political polarisation out here!' they sigh happily, sipping on tea Friend or foe? and potting on the biennials. But deep down they know – there is an ancient ideological war raging across the land, one which cares not for hedge lines or allotment boundaries. And it is this: Where do you stand when it comes to wildlife? On the face of it, this may not seem a cause for debate. We all love robins. We adore butterflies. We welcome bees and other pollinators. These are our friends! But what about those more destructive forces? Badgers and bunnies. Cockshafers and cutworms. Leaf miners and leatherjackets. Where do you draw the line? Can you justify feeding the sparrows but chasing off the magpies?

“I would encourage people to register with the scheme because they can then see whether they are getting a better deal before deciding to switch.

Like in any conflict, there are the extremists. On one side, the militants - those who will employ a dizzying arsenal of chemical and biological weapons to leave their plot as lifeless as the surface of the moon. On the other, the pacifists – gentle souls who will wistfully watch their Delphiniums be chewed to oblivion and shrug off the widening trenches in their lawn. Both sides eye each other suspiciously, shaking their heads.

“The scheme also provides an opportunity to encourage energy efficiency and help to reduce the number of households in fuel poverty.”

There are no easy answers here, but perhaps like most of the world's problems a little discourse would go a long way. There must be a middle ground to be found – not sitting on the fence, but chatting over it.

The scheme is delivered by the Council and iChoosr, an independent specialist provider in collective energy switching. Collective switching gives people the opportunity to group together and pay less for their energy. Residents can switch electric or dual fuel and can choose to have paper bills or to manage their accounts online. iChoosr hold three auctions a year and energy suppliers compete to provide the lowest priced tariff in the auction.

SEPEMBER TIP: The single most effective method to attract wildlife is to build a pond. Water attracts insects, amphibians, mammals and birds in their scores. It needn't be big – you'll be shocked by how quickly something not much larger than a sunken bucket is colonised. There are plenty of plants for smaller ponds, like Typha minima (miniature bull rush).

It is free for residents to register their interest and registrations for the first auction are now open. The first auction for Charnwood will take place on 8 October. For more information about Charnwood Big Switch and to register visit https://www.charnwood.gov.uk/charnwoodbigswitch

Leicester Sea Cadets offering more and more to the young people of Leicester OVER THE last few months Leicester Sea Cadets has successfully run a new national youth project through Youth United Foundation (YUF) by opening its doors to nine years olds for the first time ever. This means that an extra 30 local children have been able to take advantage of adventures and activities outdoors. The group also welcomes parents and other adults in the community to help out and all gain further qualifications together, such as Duke of Edinburgh Award, Royal Yachting Association qualifications, BTECs, and British Canoeing Awards. Richard de la Mare, Eastern Area Officer for Leicester Sea Cadets said: “We are absolutely delighted that with the support of the Youth United Foundation we have been able to extend the access of this project in Leicester. This important project has enabled more young people to be able to experience the adventures and activities outdoors, helping to equip them with the resilience, self-belief and social confidence needed to thrive in modern day life.” In October Leicester Sea Cadets will be running the National Citizen Service (NCS) Programme that welcomes 16- 17 year olds to join a project run in half term to feel challenged and engaged whilst taking part in the four-phase programme. Check Leicester Sea Cadets out on Facebook - www.facebook.com/seacadetsleicesteruk, or visit them at 140 Ross Walk, Leicester LE4 5HH on a Tuesday or Thursday or call them on: 0116 266 2865. People are welcome to drop in to find out about the opportunities available with Sea Cadets, or contact Jemma Martin (Eastern Area Development Worker) jmartin@ms-sc.org or 07972 152889.

Bible study class Great Central Railway hosts a starts 3rd year in Chinese Delegation of 40 business professionals from CRRC. Rothley Community Bible Study (CBS) started its first class in Rothley at the Baptist Church in September 2017. Going in to a third year the class will start on Tuesday 3rd September at 7.30pm, meeting weekly on Tuesdays subsequently. We will be studying Matthew’s Gospel. CBS is a non-denominational charity that was established in the UK 40 years ago. Its purpose is solely to facilitate Bible study and through that to provide all people, whatever their background, with the opportunity to get to know Jesus Christ. A study year usually runs from September to May, with 30 study sessions plus breaks that fit with school holidays. There is a cost involved with being a class member, which is normally about £2 per week. However, we always state that if a person has limited funds we would only expect them to pay what they can afford. Also, the first 3 weeks for a new person are free and without obligation – there is no problem if they decide not to continue at that point. For anyone who is not familiar with Bible study, we also offer help to get them started; you don’t need to be a Bible expert to join a CBS class. If you do not possess a Bible we can arrange for you to have one. We plan to do the study well, which does require a class member to be able to devote some time at home each week to complete the study. When we come together as a class at the Baptist Church there is a joint discussion about the passage of scripture being studied that week. Most people find the study helpful – one of our members has given the following comment: “CBS is what it says on the tin! In Community Bible Study people from different denominations, not just one church (or no church background at all), are accepted and made to feel welcome. I have found it refreshing and have had my eyes opened to view things from a different perspective, but still true to His word, the Bible.” If you are thinking of getting involved with CBS at Rothley and want more information, please contact me on 07984410618.

A Chinese Delegation of 40 business professionals from CRRC, the world’s largest supplier of rail transit equipment spent a day at the Great Central Railway this week. The delegation are visiting the UK for a month long study program as part of their studies at the International Business School Suzhou.

They started their tour in London looking at the Cross Rail project and the new Paddington Station. Their next port of call was Derby whereupon they took time off to spend a day at the Great Central Heritage Railway in Leicestershire to discover how it used to be. After a round trip on the heritage line, they were taken on a tour of the locomotive repair works before departing for Derby in the afternoon. Marketing Manager from the railway, Michael Stokes said “The graduates really enjoyed their day of travelling behind a steam locomotive and found it very amusing travelling at 25mph instead of 250mph!”

There should be a will, and there is a way! For some years now, local charity Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland has campaigned to reduce the 7 out of 10 people who die without a will. To that end this year, more than twenty offices of local Solicitors have generously agreed to reduce their Will Writing charges for older people to only £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will. Whilst this is a huge reduction of around £100 with no strings attached, in earlier years some people have chosen to recognise needy local older people by leaving a greatly appreciated gift in their will to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland or making a donation, where the need is great especially in these difficult times. The offer is available from 1st September until 31st October. Hundreds of people took advantage of this superb, low - cost deal last year in what proved to be a very successful initiative by the charity. Details are available from 0116 2992233 or https://www.ageuk.org.uk/leics/get-involved/fundraising/will-writing/ Commenting, the Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, Anthony Donovan said, “Most people appreciate that it is extremely important to make a Will, but either never get round to it or continue to put it off on the basis that they are too young and it is something that they will do when they are much older. Unfortunately, 7 out of 10 people die without sorting it out, in spite of the clear benefits. By making a Will you take the pressure off those nearest and dearest to you who will receive your money and property, rather than it being left to the rules of law to decide.” “Even if you have made a will, perhaps it was so long ago that it is time to consider whether it needs revising. Don’t miss this opportunity to put matters straight!”
