Painting Challenge/ Tea Party

Saturday 23rd June 2018. Ninety years on from the original Old English fair held on the same School premises. The challenge was to paint pictures to represent the titles which were published in the original 1928 document. Some great interpretation, given some of the bleak topics on offer. The challenge was accepted and members gave a great effort to supplying a varied, sometimes comical, display of talent for us to enjoy. With music provided by Simon Faulks, the afternoon became a real social affair, a chance to while away time talking with friends on a warm and sunny day. Drinks and sandwiches, together with cakes baked by volunteers, ensured all would be well fed. Members were encouraged to bring flowers from their gardens as table decoration; this brightened the room and was well received. John Kilby of Birstall History Society, (the instigator of this event) was an invited guest for the afternoon. Attendees were asked to vote for their favourite and best interpretation among the display. Most votes went to Doreen Roper “Study of Fish in Oils” for interpretation, and Pauline Brindley “Sweet Memories” as favourite picture.

More than ÂŁ1,400 raised by this year’s Joe’s Jog NEARLY 400 runners raised more than ÂŁ1,400 for charity by joining a mile-long fun run to support the work of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT). Joe’s Jog, now in its fifth year, took place before the Mattioli Woods Rothley 10k running event on Tuesday 12 June. It drew a record 358 participants, with families and children of all ages enjoying the chance to be part of the Rothley 10k evening. The race was opened by the Rev Rob Gladstone who set the racers off. Joe’s Jog was won by William Harmer, age 14, from Rothley, in 6 minutes 0.5 seconds. First female was 12-year-old Gracie Rose Walters, from Newton Burgoland, in 6 minutes 17 seconds. Joe Humphries was 14 when he collapsed and died suddenly while out jogging near his Rothley home. He was a victim of SADS – sudden arrhythmic death syndrome – a heart condition which can strike anyone at any time, particularly otherwise fit and healthy young people. Since Joe’s death, his family and friends have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of SADS and sudden heart deaths. They set up the JHMT to provide free CPR training in schools, sports clubs and community groups, help fund community defibrillators and campaign for better understanding of SADS. The charity also runs the Inspire Awards, a small grants scheme that helps inspiring young people to fulfill their potential. Steve Humphries, chair of the JHMT, said: “This was a fantastic event for families to run together. We were blown away by the number of people who participated in this years’ run. Joes Jog has become a much loved community event which has grown year on year in popularity. “We raised ÂŁ1,400 towards the work of the Trust, which is a wonderful tribute to Joe. “Sudden heart deaths like Joe’s aren’t inevitable, they’re preventable. If more people are CPR trained and more defibrillators are made available in public places, we can make a difference to the shocking statistic that 12 young people aged 12-35 die in the UK each week from undiagnosed heart conditions like SADS. “Joe’s Jog is a great way to commemorate Joe in his home village, but it wouldn’t be possible without the selfless efforts of the Trust’s kind-hearted and talented volunteers of all ages, who are so willing to give up their precious time to help us organise this popular event.â€? To find out more about the Trust’s work, to get involved as a volunteer, or to learn how to apply for the Inspire Awards or CPR training for your sports club, visit www.jhmt.org.uk

Alpine House Medical Centre Mountsorrel - Spreads The Word The extension to the premises at the Alpine House Surgery has enabled the Practice to increase the services that it provides to over 10,000 patients.. Patients Asked and We Listened • Difficulty in making phone calls to arrange an appointment •
Difficulty in getting appointment quickly for blood tests.
This has been addressed by the Practice with the introduction of a "Walk-in clinic" Monday to Friday 8-30am to 10-30am for registered patients requiring an urgent, ‘on the day’ doctor’s appointment or blood test. During particularly busy periods, you may be asked to sit and wait but the benefits to patients are: • Patients can be seen quickly when they are experiencing a new medical problem or an acute flare of an existing condition. •
It enables the Practice to deal with very sick patients quickly.
•
It enables the Practice to see more patients as some situations can be dealt with in less than the normal 10 minute appointment slot, thus freeing up time for other patients.
The first day of the blood test clinic resulted in an additional 32 patients being seen and the walk-in clinic for new medical problems, saw an additional 20 patients accessing GP services. Patients are recommending the use of the clinics to registered family and friends. Staff are expanding their skills to enable them to support their colleagues and offer more services to patients. Doctors at the Practice are pleased with how the clinics are running and receiving positive feedback from patients. Two other Leicester GP Practices are keen to speak with Alpine House with a view to setting up similar services. Alpine House Surgery is keen to continue to continue to support the needs of our patients

Learn more about how amazing dogs can transform lives VISITORS are to be welcomed to the Canine Partners Midlands Training Centre to learn more about how the charity’s amazing dogs can transform the lives of people with disabilities.
The information sessions, which are to be held on 17 July, offer members of the public a fantastic opportunity to find out more about Canine Partners, what they do as a charity and how to support them. Information sessions are held at the training centre in Osgathorpe, Leicestershire, throughout the year, where you can see a demonstration and hear from an established partner about the difference their canine partner has made to their lives. The dogs are trained to carry out a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and dressing a person. They can even help load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency. By attending an information session, it helps to raise awareness and vital funds for the charity, which will lead to Canine Partners being able to re-open their currently closed waiting list for new applicants. The information sessions will take place on Tuesday 17 July at 11am and 2pm. Canine Partners ask for a suggested donation of £5 per person, which includes the costs for the event and refreshments. The session includes a presentation, a short film, a demonstration by dogs in training and a talk from an established partner. For further information and to book your place, visit caninepartners.org.uk/informationsessions/ or call 01730 716000 and select 1 for fundraising.

This Summer’s Sensational Sizzling Read, Maga High by Local Author Lindzi Mayann Local author Lindzi Mayann has recently published, Maga High and it’s causing quite a stir. Set in infamous party destination Magaluf, in Spain, it is the only chick-lit of its kind. The humorous, saucy story tells the tale of main character Jodie who goes on a girl’s holiday and decides, actually, she would like to stay for a few more weeks. But this would mean getting a job on the strip selling shots or promoting clubs. Can she really do it? What adventures (and misdemeanours) could this lead to! Lindzi recently featured in a radio interview with the BBC and spoke of how the book is written from personal experience of doing just that. 8 years ago she herself took the plunge and chose to miss her return flight home in favour of the wild lifestyle Magaluf had to offer. Lindzi has always wanted to be an author and decided to follow the age-old advice of writing about what you know. The things she witnessed and heard about during her time in Magaluf have gone on to provide a great basis for her story. The topic is shocking and sensational and her high-spirited, amusing style is proving popular having already received many five-star reviews to date. It’s the perfect read to whisk you away to a sunnier, vibrant destination or to take along with you on your summer holidays for a fun, thrilling read. Maga High provides a sneaky peek behind the scenes of working life abroad and offers a brand new perspective on party destination holidays. Maga High is available as paperback and for kindle via Amazon. Lindzi is hopeful she can keep the positive momentum going throughout summer and is urging locals to get behind her and support her in this quest. She is planning to host a party at The Crown in Anstey on Saturday August 4th with a Magaluf, beach party theme. Everybody is welcome! You can read more about Lindzi and her book by searching for Maga High on Amazon and following her on social media sites Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Search Lindzi Mayann to find her profiles or contact her via email- Lindzimayann@outlook.com Lindzi would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have been loyally supporting her so far and says she is looking forward to gaining some new fans! Happy reading!

Stonehurst Farm 1940’s WW2 Event
Grants to help Charnwood sports clubs buy life-saving defibrillators Sports clubs in Charnwood are being encouraged to apply for borough council funding to help install life-saving defibrillators. The Council is offering up to £250 towards the equipment and is working with Leicestershire heart charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT).
(Mountsorrel Village – LE12 7AA- On the old A6)
The charity, set up in memory of Rothley teenager Joe Humphries who was a victim of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS), campaigns to increase the number of defibrillators and raise awareness of SADS.
Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th August 2018 10.30am – 16.30pm
Cllr Deborah Taylor, lead member for communities, safety and wellbeing at the council, said: “We are delighted to be working with the trust and would encourage clubs to apply for a sports grant towards the cost of a defibrillator. It could ultimately save someone’s life. “These defibrillators would not only help people at sports clubs but would also be available to use for the wider community.” Steve Humphries, chair of the JHMT, said: “It’s fantastic news that Charnwood Borough Council is now opening up its sports grants to help fund public access defibrillators in community sports facilities. “This is a vital step to help accelerate the number of Charnwood-based sports clubs and groups that will be better equipped in case of a cardiac emergency. “Joe’s trust works to equip our local communities to change the shocking statistics around sudden heart death which can strike anyone, anywhere and anytime. “Tragically, this includes at least 12 seemingly fit and healthy young people aged 12-35 each week, who die in Britain from undiagnosed genetic heart problems like sudden arrhythmic death syndrome. “Ensuring a defibrillator is readily available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, is a vital step towards creating a heartsafe sporting and community environment.” A defibrillator typically costs around £1,000. The Council has amended its sports grants scheme to allow applications of up to £250 for defibrillators. Applications for the next round of grants need to be submitted by July 24. The deadline for the following round is October 2. For more information and to apply, visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/sports_facilities_grant

Joe Humphries Special Recognition Award To celebrate 10 years of recognising sporting achievement across the borough a new award is being launched.
On the morning of Sunday 30th September you can attempt a serious 10K or a fun 3K in the beautiful Beacon Country Park at Woodhouse Eaves. Whether you run for the enjoyment of it or sponsored for charity, both runs are suitable for all abilities and are entirely off-road along woodland pathways and bridleways although only the 10K includes hill climbs. There is also the possibility of 4 friends running together as a relay team where no-one runs more than 3K but the team covers the whole 10K.
The Joe Humphries Special Recognition Award will recognise inspirational people and groups who have gone above and beyond and made outstanding achievements in the face of adversity.
Everyone finishing gets a medal and there will be a host of prizes as well as the opportunity for a warm-down massage. If you simply want to watch or to take the family, there will be hot food and drinks, and a play ground for the children.

Have A Cruelty-Free Holiday In the early 1980’s while I was on holiday in Turkey I remember seeing a huge brown bear in a street in old Istanbul dancing on his hind legs to the beat of a drum. A chain held by his keeper was attached to a ring through his nose. What a photo opportunity for which I gladly paid! I now look at the photograph with dismay and shame. At that time I didn’t question how an animal could be trained to perform such an unnatural act, nor did I consider it demeaning or cruel. How things have changed! The charity World Animal Protection stopped the cruelty of dancing bears in 2012 having begun their campaign in 1998. Bears were ‘trained’ by their keepers who tugged at chains attached to nose rings or by beating the bears’ legs. The bears were also often forced to stand on hot metal plates which made them stand upright and ‘hop’ from leg-to-leg, or ‘dance’. After a day’s performing the bears would be imprisoned in a barren metal cage with just enough food for survival. Research carried out by Oxford University has revealed that the mistreatment of over half a million animals in wildlife attractions around the world is being subsidised by unaware tourists. Many of the animals are captured from the wild as babies after their mothers are killed. The young animals are then forced into training regimes to entertain tourists. Unable to carry out their normal behaviour they are imprisoned in enclosures or cages when they are not ‘working’. For safety reasons many are declawed and/or have teeth removed. Tourists are told that payment for rides,
photographs or other entertainment supports conservation. This is mostly untrue. Tourists are in fact unwittingly supporting animal abuse and captive breeding. Baby elephants are chained in stocks and undergo a ‘breaking process’. Starved and beaten until their spirits are broken, they become entirely submissive to their mahouts (trainers). They then have a life of carrying tourists on their backs in blistering heat or learn to perform ridiculous tricks. Lion cubs as young as six weeks old are taken from their mothers to be petted relentlessly to frustration by 100 to 150 tourists a day who are keen to get a ‘cool selfie’. When they become too large they are often sent to canned hunting camps to be shot by rich trophy hunters in enclosures where there is no escape. The opportunity to pose or walk with fully grown tigers and lions is a favourite attraction for tourists. In order to become sufficiently compliant for such activities the animals are often drugged with tranquilisers and abused in training. Swimming with dolphins is a popular activity. However, most dolphins are captured from the wild. Their complex social lives and bonds are destroyed causing suffering which often results in death. The survivors live out their lives in chlorinated pools a tiny fraction of the size of their ocean homes. Their lives in captivity are so stressful they are susceptible to disease, heart attacks and gastric ulcers. It is estimated that around 3,000 baby macaques are taken from their murdered
mothers annually in Indonesia alone. Wearing collars and chains they are forced to train from between four and six hours a day for six months. To make them stand on two legs their arms are tied behind their backs and they are pulled upright with their collar chains so that their feet just touch the ground. The chain is secured and the animals can be left to hang for hours. Many don’t survive the training. Those that do can perform for five to ten years after which many are sold to be killed for food which is considered a delicacy. Sensitive, intelligent orangutans are brutally forced into inflicting aggression against each other in staged boxing matches cheered on by men, women and children. Photojournalist, Aaron Gekoski said, “People found it funny watching these beautiful, sentient, intelligent animals …what I witnessed was shocking and incredibly distressing.” Camels and donkeys work for long hours daily in intense heat with no breaks for food or water carrying tourists. Snakes, monkeys, baby chimps and other animals are used as photo props with no regard for their welfare. Traditional festivals encourage tourists to watch cruel spectacles such as bullfights. Animal exploitation in holiday resorts is rife. The choices we make on holiday concerning animals can have the power to reduce cruel attractions and save lives or encourage more exploitation. Have a cruelty-free holiday and treat our non human friends with the respect and dignity they deserve by avoiding any entertainment that could exploit them.
