Ruffle comes home!
BACK TO
An exciting invitation arrived in Ruffle’s kennel recently from the Great Central Railway in Leicestershire. Together with author and illustrator, Rachel Greaves, Ruffle will be appearing at the GCR’s Family Fun event at Rothley Station on August 24th, 25th and 26th. Visitors to the event can meet Ruffle and enjoy an interactive performance of some of his adventures brought to life with puppets and props including an incredible model train called ‘The Flying Terrier’! The Ruffle stories were inspired by Rachel’s love of Airedales combined with knowledge from her two children who have worked on the GCR. Readers of the books will recognise some of the storylines and illustrations if they have visited the GCR.

Rachel explained just how excited both she and ENQUIRIES: 01509 632323 @GCROFFICIAL @GCRGREAT Ruffle are to be visiting the places that inspired the series of adventures. ‘The events in the stories are W W W . G C R A I LWA Y. C O . U K believable because they have happened or readers can imagine them happening. Keen-eyed readers will spot that the little station where Eric the station master works could well be Rothley. There’s also an illustration of the stone bridge that carries the trains over the Swithland Reservoir. Ruffle and I are really looking forward to sharing his adventures in the place where they were imagined as happening – it’s as if Ruffle was coming home!’ The event will include activities and storytelling at stations along the GCR – fantastic fun whilst encouraging reading! Since self-publishing the first of her series of Ruffle stories just over 3 years ago, Rachel has sold over 9500 books. As an English and Drama teacher it was only natural that Rachel adapted some of the stories into assembly performances using puppets and props to promote reading, writing and a love of imagination. Over 100 primary schools have enjoyed sharing in Ruffle’s adventures so far.

Edible Forest Festival Returns to Charnwood Forest A feast of unique food and drink events from 7-15 September 2019 The annual Edible Forest Festival returns this September to celebrate the best in local food and drink at unique and iconic settings around the ancient woodland of Charnwood Forest.
The Mountsorrel REVIVAL is set for a record breaking 6th Year on Sunday 11th August. Thanks to continued local business support and extra support from the Parish Council the organisers are providing new attractions. It’s set to be a brilliant event in 2019 and unbelievably, it’s still free to visitors!
From 7-15 September 2019, there will be a range of tasty food and drink events including afternoon tea in the iconic Old John Tower in Bradgate Park, dining under the stars in one of our unique dining pods, Trappist Brewery Tours, Safari Supper around Charnwood’s finest eateries and another outstanding Secret Gourmet evening with Michelin star holder, Chef John Duffin.
Some of the new attractions include more music such as steel band and Sambando in the parade, more for young people to do such as an assault course, laser quest, donkey rides and go-karts for the younger members, and more ways to join in such as the dog show (now also with agility section), competitions to enter, and a fun run.
New events at this year’s Edible Forest Festival include a cider tasting night, cheese pairing and a vegan day. Additional new events will be announced shortly. People can sign up at www.edibleforest.co.uk to make sure that they get first in the queue when tickets go on sale.
For a full list of What’s on see their website at:
the-mct.co.uk/whats-on For those that come by car, parking will be off Sileby Road near its junction with the by-pass (access only from the bypass). Blue badge parking will also be available both off Sileby Road and at the new Mountsorrel Memorial Centre.
The Edible Forest festival was created by Leicestershire Promotions and is supported by Charnwood Borough Council and Everards.
To keep REVIVAL safe for all visitors the following Roads will be closed from 10:00 to 17:00. Sileby Road from its junction with the Market Place to just short of the bypass junction. Watling Street from its junction with the Market Place for about 35 metres and the Green on both sides from its junctions with Leicester Road to the Navins. Also, the Main Road will be closed from Bond Lane along the old A6 to the Green (to its junction with Leicester Rd) for 30 minutes from 12:00 to 12:30 for safe passage of the Parade & Fun Run. Buses which normally use the Green and Rothley Road will be diverted along Leicester Road and Bier Way. One bus in each direction scheduled during the parade will use the bypass and Bier Way. Finally, did you know that behind the scenes REVIVAL is organised by very small number of people and sadly without support, this may be the last event? If you’d like to help secure the future of REVIVAL, all you need to be able to do is attend monthly meetings (usually on a Monday evening) and have a can-do attitude. No other skills are required. If you can’t commit regularly but would still like to help, the MCT always needs assistance on the day either before, during or after the event. Call 0797 2313 897 or complete a volunteer form at: the-mct.co.uk/volunteer-to-help to find out more.
Come and try New Age Kurling Wednesday afternoons 3-4pm The Glenmore Community Centre, Shepshed

Ring Fence Your Assets Everybody wants to protect their assets for the benefit of their family and loved ones. We are all motivated to provide for our children throughout their lives and want what is best for them. Many people will think about or draft a Will hoping to ensure that the assets that they have worked hard for, are passed on to their children and chosen beneficiaries after their death. However, a Will can only dispose of the assets that you own at the date of your death and if the value of these have decreased during your lifetime, there will be little if anything left for your beneficiaries to inherit.
A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving the surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of the life. A clause can be added for the Trustees to have access to the capital at their discretion. There are also other Will Trusts available depending on your circumstances (i.e. Discretionary Trust Wills) Lifetime Living Trusts are specifically designed to protect your assets for you during your lifetime. Giving you the peace of mind that your estate can be passed on securely and intact to your loved ones, after your death.
Property Protection Trusts (Life Interest Trusts) can only be created while both partners are alive. Normally with couples the property is divided 50/50, though these percentages can be different. Upon the first death, their share of the property is placed into the Trust to be administered by the Trustee. The Will also specifies who is to be the ultimate beneficiary and this would normally be the surviving children of the deceased. The deceased’s share in the property is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so even if the surviving partner remarries or goes to a care home.
After your death, the Trust continues to work to protect your assets for your beneficiaries. The Trust can continue to hold the assets safely within it or pay them out to the specified beneficiaries. The Trust is extremely flexible after your death and has the potential to continue protecting your family for 125 years from the date it was created. That means that all the benefits described in this document can not only protect you and your children but can also protect your grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
What are the main reasons for wanting to create a trust? • Your wishes to be specifically set out during your life •
To prevent any claims on your estate under the Inheritance Act 1975 (Provision for Family and Dependants)
•
To reduce probate costs upon your death
•
To provide for beneficiaries who require assistance
•
To protect the trust assets from passing to future spouse or partner before/or after your death
•
To provide the trustees with means to manage the trust assets should you die or no longer live in property
•
To provide the trustees to rent property im mediately after your death or if you no longer live in property
•
To provide the trustees with means to manage the trust assets should they lose mental capacity (although creating Lasting Powers of Attorney is essential)

Splashing time at Joe’s Jog!
Nothing could dampen the spirits of runners of all ages who braved the downpours last week for the Joe’s Jog charity fun run. Joe’s Jog, which is now in its sixth year, took place before the Mattioli Woods Rothley 10k running event on Tuesday 11 June. This year’s Joe’s Jog drew a record 452 registered participants, with families and children of all ages enjoying the chance to be part of the Rothley 10k evening. The run raised a fantastic £2,400 to support the ongoing work of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT). The race was officially started by Chris Edwards from Leicester rock band Kasabian. The first three runners to cross the line were Oliver Arnold, Harry Sutherington and Harrison Hill. The first female home was Eloise Geary, in 7th place. Joe Humphries was 14 when he collapsed and died suddenly while out jogging near his Rothley home. He was a victim of SADS – sudden arrhythmic death syndrome – a heart condition which can strike anyone at any time, particularly otherwise fit and healthy young people. Since Joe’s death, his family and friends have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of SADS and sudden heart deaths. They set up the JHMT to provide free CPR training in schools, sports clubs and community groups, to help fund community defibrillators and to campaign for better understanding of SADS. The charity also runs the Inspire Awards, a small grants scheme that helps inspiring young people to fulfill their potential. Steve Humphries, chair of the JHMT, said: “Despite the awful weather conditions, this was an amazing effort by everyone who turned out to run and have fun in the rain. “Joe’s Jog is a great way to commemorate our son Joe in his home village and raise vital funds for the ongoing work of his Trust to save young lives, and help young people to reach their potential. “This event would not have been possible without the army of Team Joe volunteers who gave up their precious time to ensure the event was a great success again.” To find out more about the Trust’s work, to get involved as a volunteer, or to learn how to apply for the Inspire Awards or CPR training for your sports club, visit www.jhmt.org.uk
Space Chase, Summer Reading Challenge 2019 The Summer Reading Challenge 2019 theme is Space Chase, an out-of-this-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Children taking part in the Challenge will join our super space family, The Rockets, for a thrilling mission to track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens! The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the long summer holiday. Children's reading can 'dip' during the summer holidays if they don't have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries each year to keep up their reading skills and confidence. The Challenge celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. How it works - Children can read whatever they like - fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library. Children receive special rewards each time they finish a book and there's a certificate for everyone who completes the Challenge. The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all primary school aged children and is designed for all reading abilities. Schools work with local libraries and give out information to encourage children to take part, and most libraries run Summer Reading Challenge linked early years activity for pre-schoolers. Throughout the Summer Reading Challenge, library staff and teenage and adult volunteers support children, helping them to discover new authors and explore a wide range of different types of books. The Challenge will launch in libraries in England and Wales on Saturday 13 July 2019.

Rothley’s own antiques roadshow
Don’t miss the chance to discover if you have treasure in the attic...
F
ROM Coventry to Cape Town, antiques expert Andy Elton has been putting a price on family heirlooms and forgotten relics for over 40 years... and now he’s coming to Rothley.
The founder of Bentley’s UK - which sets up shop in the Rothley - is just the man to make your dreams come true – or let you down gently. “A lot of people are very unsure as to the worth of their items, which may have been stored for years in cupboards, lofts, garages and even garden sheds,â€? says Andy. “Others are convinced they’re bringing something that’s worth a fortune. “You can open a box and know you’re not going something that is part of their heritage – you’ve got to be diplomatic.â€? On the other hand, Andy is in a position to break some very welcome news: “One gentleman had a Rolex Submariner watch, which had lain unworn in a cupboard since it was given to him by his uncle. He was amazed when I offered him ÂŁ5000. “Then there was the time in South Africa when someone came along with a dusty bronze which turned out to be a rare work by the sculptor Anton Van Wouw – I valued that at ÂŁ10,000.â€?
He’s always been interested in antiques and jewellery and has worked with two of the major auction houses in London and another in Nottingham. But he prefers to be his own boss. “I’ve travelled all over the UK and I regularly go to South Africa, meeting thousands of people along the way, he says.
Andy prides himself on offering a fair price: “I treat people as I would want to be treated myself, he says.
“You come across some wonderful stories; I love hearing about how grandad got his medals.
honest.
“You never know what the day will bring – that’s why it’s such a lovely job. I’m a very lucky man. Hopefully I’ll be making someone in Rothley very happy!
“I’ve got customers who have been coming to me for 15 years and others who have been referred to me by family and friends. I think that speaks for itself.

The Charnwood Gardener
The Three E’s – Why Gardening Makes You Happy
Gardeners have always known that there’s nothing better for mind, body and soul than getting your hands dirty and tending the patch. And now everyone else has caught up – you often hear gardening mentioned alongside mindfulness, meditation and all those other attempts to cure us of our modern malaise. But what is it that makes gardening so good for you? Why would something that was once seen as mundane as doing the dishes now be considered a trendy, holistic cure-all?
Stay connected with the borough council Charnwood residents are being urged to stay connected with the borough council by signing up to new email alerts.
The scent of lemon balm is said to reduce anxiety
Exercise - One of my motivations for becoming a professional gardener was the appeal of leading an active lifestyle. I’d spent my working life sat at a desk, bathed in artificial light and barely having the opportunity to stretch my legs. When you’re in the garden you’re always on the move – you squat, lunge, stretch, lift. It’s like a gym workout but far more fun, and it makes your body happy. Entertainment - Gardening is a very engaging activity, and a busy mind is a happy one. These days the ever-present temptation is to stare at any number of screens – TV, tablet, smartphone – but these are all passive activities that leave us feeling unfulfilled. What better remedy to these attention-devouring devices could there be than planting a raspberry, attempting a topiary or pruning an apple tree? Enlightenment - You often hear the line that gardening ‘connects us to nature’, but there’s more to it than that. When we garden our deep, ancestral instincts take over (we have, after all, been gardening as a species for thousands of years) and we’re connected to our true (and better) natures. There’s contentment to be found when we’re doing something real and worthy. AUGUST TIP: Don’t underestimate the power of deadheading. Plants that are allowed to go to seed will finish flowering much earlier. Make it part of your daily routine – take your morning coffee outside and trim some spent flowers.

The Council has introduced the alerts to help keep people informed about Council services and news. There are a range of topics including general news, business, planning, events, recycling and refuse and news for tenants. Cllr Jonathan Morgan, leader of the Council and lead member for communications, said: “We’re committed to having open and honest communication with residents and these new email alerts are a great way to get information to people. “Residents can choose which notifications to receive and we want to make it as easy as possible for people to access information which may be relevant to them. “And we are not just broadcasting our news. We want to have meaningful conversations with people and that can take place either face to face, on the phone, on social media and we still happily receive letters. Your views our important to us and essential in shaping our services.” To sign up to the Council’s new email alerts, please visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/alerts
The Family Obstacular - a Big Day Out! BRADGATE ROTARY’S Family Challenge Day takes place on Sunday 15th September. The Family Obstacular or Family Funtacular will be taking place in a new location in the Charnwood Forest. Fun and Family are the key words, this is NOT a mud, blood guts and glory event, but something to bring out the competitiveness without the pain while raising funds for some of our local charities. Alongside the challenges, there will be opportunities to enjoy a day out with stalls, bouncy castle and food options. Not everyone will need to take part in the challenges to appreciate the day, but we suspect you might want to anyway. So pencil on the family calendar the date and watch this space for more details of the Family Obstacular on Sunday 15th September.

Another Successful Year for the Annual Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride Alex’s Wish, organisers of the annual Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride have just finished counting! The event which raises funds for the charity Alex’s Wish raised an amazing £7,611.71.
Zoe Edwards, Event and Fundraising Manager said, “This year’s Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride was bigger than ever with over 190 people taking part. Our thanks go out to everyone who took part and raised much needed funds for Alex’s Wish. All funds will go directly to supporting clinical research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy a life limiting disease which currently has no cure and very few treatments. Our thanks also go out to this year’s headline sponsor - Glynis Wright & Co who was joined by fellow sponsors Bradleys, Jay Webb Consulting, Marshals, Cake Makers and United Carpets. Pedal Power returned again for the 5th year to provide all important mechanical support!” The event, which has become a Charnwood staple, sees cyclists choose between a 10, 20 or 50 mile route around the beautiful Charnwood Forest – home of Alex’s Wish. Added Zoe, “We really try to make this event inclusive and fun. It’s not a race and participants can take it at their own pace though we do get some cyclists who put in some amazing times too!” Hellen Jackson from Mountsorrel took part in this year’s Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride and said, “It was a brilliant day! We really enjoyed it. It was so well organised and a beautiful route. Cookie medals at the end was such a lovely touch plus some wonderful bacon sandwiches and cakes too! I’d recommend this to everyone. We’re not cyclists at all but took it at our own pace and enjoyed every minute of it.” Next year’s event is scheduled to take place in mid-May 2020 and more details can be found at: https://alexswish.co.uk/event/charnwood-forestcycle-ride/

Could you change a child’s life in 2020? We’re looking for volunteer host families who can offer a stable, loving temporary home for children whose lives are still affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leicestershire) is a registered charity that supports Belarusian children from disadvantaged social backgrounds who are still affected by the Chernobyl disaster. Every year we bring children from the most badly affected parts of Belarus to the UK for a month of recuperative care. During the visit, the children stay with a host family and undertake a programme of organised activities that gives them plenty of fresh air, friendship, essential health checks and above all the fun they so desperately need. We’re on the lookout for enthusiastic, committed families who can provide a stable, loving home for a vulnerable child that will be placed in their care for four weeks. Host families will need to have their own transport and ideally live within 30 minutes of the charity’s day centre, which is currently in Markfield. John Buckby, Group Co-ordinator for Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (West Leics) said: “Hosting a child is an incredibly rewarding experience and these visits do really change the lives of the children and the host families and volunteers that support them. “The next visit is planned for the summer of 2020 but there is lots of organising before then, so it’s vital that we have host families in place by September 2019 to ensure we can commit to bringing these children, so desperately in need of our help, over to the UK.” If you think you can help, either as a host family or as a volunteer supporting the visits you can find more information on our website www.focc-westleics.org.uk or get in touch with our Group Co-ordinator, John Buckby, on 01455 285799 / 07738 324947 or by email at john.evolution@btinternet.com.
Stairlift Superheroes Step Into Action! Candor Care are continuing to give back to the local community by offering a donation of a reconditioned stairlift every month to someone to help improve their mobility. The Coalville-based stairlift company launched their refurbished stairlift donation scheme in January this year to help people in times of desperate need. Having a stairlift installed can provide a comfortable solution on a short or long term basis and give someone the freedom and independence back in their home. Although not a huge expense, a stairlift is still a cost which some people may struggle to afford. After donating 2 stairlifts in 2018 as part of a competition during the popular Heather Scarecrow Festival, Candor decided to donate a stairlift every month throughout 2019 to someone that will really benefit. Candor Care will be donating a fully refurbished stairlift to someone in need every month throughout 2019. To register your interest for a friend or family member that might be in need, email - info@candorcare.co.uk or send a message through Candor Care’s facebook page. Terms and conditions apply and all applications are given careful consideration before response. Candor Care can only offer this for straight staircases with no twists or turns.

Summer Season at Bradgate Park The Ruins of Bradgate Park House, in the centre of Bradgate Park are set to be the backdrop for a Summer Season of outdoor performances from national and local companies and performers, providing unforgettable memories of open air theatre and live music in Leicestershire’s favourite Park
movies, TV themes and pop music, as well as the traditional sea shanties and proms music that thrill and engage audiences. Starting at 7pm the event will culminate in a light show and wildlife-friendly pyrotechnics, all set against the backdrop of the home of Lady Jane Grey.
The 2019 season in August offers a great variety of opportunities, with the popular Bradgate Park Proms Spectacular, followed by the Acoustic Folk picnic, alongside daytime family theatre in the summer holidays.
The Charity’s fundraiser has been lucky to gain support from musicians who will also be performing including Ruby Doos; Dave Kirk; Daryl Kirkland; The Jigantics (acoustic); David Wyatt/Andy Wale Acoustic and Harriet Endersby. Headlining the day is the Jim Moray Trio. Jim Moray is amongst England’s finest interpreters of traditional song. A five-time BBC Folk Award winner, his songs have been featured in a season finale of Grey’s Anatomy, he has appeared onscreen singing a specially composed song for Dr Who spin-off Class as aliens attack the earth, and he has presented documentaries on traditional music for BBC Radio 3.
Daytime family theatre is returning to Bradgate Park on the 7th and 8th August with Quantum Theatre’s adaptation of Wind in the Willows. The daytime performances are at 2pm on Thursday August 8th and at 11 and 2.30 on Friday August 9th. Their shows deliver a magical event for young and old alike taking them back to the tales of their childhood in a show designed to appeal to all the family. With recent interest in the Wind in the Willows puppets’ return after 30 years’ absence and a new film, the performances will be a popular summer day out. The Park’s Explore project volunteers also offer an added treat of free activities. On the evening of Thursday August 8th Quantum Theatre will also be performing an adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic A Mid Summer Night’s Dream. The performance starts 7pm and with the opportunity to access the Ruins an hour before performances start - it is a great way to spend a summer’s evening. The Proms Spectacular will feature a concert with Leicestershire’s Bardi Wind Orchestra on Saturday 17th August. The evening of popular and traditional music will thrill and entertain the whole family. The Ruins open from 5.30pm allowing people to enjoy a picnic in this magnificent location. The concert will show a lighter side of the symphonic band’s repertoire with selections from shows, the

The following day, Sunday 18th August, the Ruins act as a venue for the third Acoustic Folk Picnic. The Acoustic Folk Picnic is a family friendly day in the walled Ruins and this year will see seven sets across the day, which starts at 12 and finishes at 7.45pm. Visitors are invited to bring a picnic, relax and enjoy a great day of music that includes local and award-winning national artists.
Cabinet to consider changes to bulky waste service Changes to Charnwood Borough Council’s bulky waste collection service will be considered by councillors. The Council is one of only a handful of authorities in England to currently offer a free collection for some bulky items from people’s doorsteps. Currently, Charnwood residents can request from the Council three free bulky waste collections each year and only face a charge after exceeding that amount. However, the Council’s Cabinet is being asked to consider introducing a ÂŁ20 charge for each collection of up to three items. The Council says as local government funding becomes increasingly challenging it must look at new ways to fund frontline services. Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member for contracts at the Council, said: “We have to be realistic about funding services for residents. Bulky waste collections are not something the authority has to provide but we know residents value the service. That’s why, as local government funding becomes more difficult, we must look at alternative ways of paying for services like this.
Peter Tyldesley, Director of the Bradgate Park Trust, said, “The Ruins are a perfect venue for a great event within the Park. Our Summer Season of shows and performances offers something for everyone.
“Nearly every other authority in the country charges for bulky waste collections and to ensure we can keep delivering a high-quality service we feel the time is right to introduce a reasonable charge.
For all music and theatre events doors open an hour before the performance starts, so audiences can bring a picnic and their own rugs or seating. Events happen whatever the weather.
“The proposed charge would help cover the costs of the service and would still be cheaper than some other authorities in the area.
For more information on any of these Summer Season events, parking guidance and full FAQs including ticket prices and purchases, visit https://www.bradgatepark. org/Pages/Events/ www.facebook.com/BradgateParkTrust call 0116 2362713 ex 25 between 10.30 and 5pm (7 days a week) or visit the Visitor Centre at the heart of the Park where tickets are on sale.
“For people who want to dispose of large items there are a number of alternatives. Firstly, we would encourage people recycle if they can and a several charities collect some bulky items such as furniture for free. Most goods can also be taken to the local tips. “This approach was included in this year’s Council’s budget which was approved by Council earlier this year.â€? The current bulky waste service costs around ÂŁ105,000 to operate and introducing the charge is expected to generate around ÂŁ60,000 a year. More information is contained in the Cabinet report.
