Applications for primary school places now open! PARENTS with children due to start at primary schools in Leicestershire in September 2019 can now apply for places at their preferred choice of schools. More information about schools in Leicestershire and the application process can be found at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/admissions Parents then have until Tuesday, 15th January 2019 to submit their applications. Ivan Ould, county council cabinet member for children and families, said: “We want to remind parents to allow enough time to research and shortlist up to three primary schools that they want to include on their application. “There’s no automatic entry system for any school in the county so we’d encourage parents to make direct contact with the schools to arrange any visits.” Nearly 7,300 applications were received for the start of the autumn term this year and resulted in: • 92.82 per cent (6,774) securing their first choice - that was compared to 91.3 per cent in 2016; • 4.39 per cent (321) securing their second choice; • 0.83 per cent (61) securing their third choice; • 98.05 per cent (7,156) securing one of their top three choices The county council is encouraging parents to make an online application - 97 per cent of them did for the Autumn 2018 term - so they receive an automatic acknowledgment that the application has been submitted. Late applications, says the council, have to be given the lowest priority as they have to be processed after the applications made on time.

Food lovers grow their own HOME-GROWN fruit and vegetables are becoming increasingly popular as more and more of us try to avoid plastic-wrapped supermarket food. A spokesman for the National Allotment Society said that many councils have seen an increase in demand for allotments, with waiting lists in some London boroughs stretching for decades. Raymond Blanc, the French chef, says that British people are demanding ‘individuality and flavour’. Tommy Banks, TV’s Great British Menu winner, says: ‘Using your own produce for home cooking will naturally taste better.’

Bespoke and Personal is the Best Approach for Community Support Increasing numbers of older people have been asking Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland to take them out rather than provide support within the home - so much so the charity has decided to launch a Personal Assistant Service.

11-17 Years Old? Want To Try A New Sport Over The Summer Holidays? LEICESTER Rowing Club are hosting a Learn to Row Juniors Course. July 30th-August 2nd Mon-Thurs 9.30-4pm. There are some spaces availiable. Interested in having a go? Want to learn the key skills and techniques? Have fun and get fit? See if you would like to join? Want to know more? Talk to Freya -Junior Rep on 0116 287 8313, visit on a Saturday morning 8.30-10.30 or contact us via email: juniors@leicester-rowing.co.uk or you visit us on Saturdays 8.30-10.30am The cost per person per course is £80, which is payable on enrollment. Form available on website at http://www.leicester-rowing.co.uk

Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, Mr Anthony Donovan, said: “As a charity we are all about helping people to stay independent for as long as possible and supporting them in the way that they direct us to. In response to need, the Personal Assistant service will bring a new dimension to this work and allow people to benefit from the flexibility it can offer but without needing to take on the extra paperwork, cost and time implications of employing someone.” Having a Personal Assistant is a tried and tested way of getting flexible and reliable support for adults with physical and mental issues or those just needing a helping hand as they get older. Age UK has taken this concept and removed the challenges that employing your own Personal Assistant can bring, including candidate vetting and interviewing, payroll and contracts. This means that having a Personal Assistant is now straightforward, easy and effective with the complexity taken away and managed by Age UK. The Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland Personal Assistants will be happy to help with whatever is needed either at home or in the community. Their range of support will include help with phone calls, bill payment and correspondence, help with domestic tasks and household management and help to attend community activities, excursions, medical appointments and shopping.

LOCAL HAIDRESSER FINALISTS IN THE UK’S BIGGEST HAIRDRESSING COMPETITION

Learn more about how amazing dogs can transform lives

Gavin Taylor owner of Gavin Taylor Hair of Rothley and their Senior Stylist Marie Atterbury from Anstey, have stormed their way through to one of the industry’s most prestigious grand finals. The Loreal Colour Trophy is one of the biggest hairdressing competitions in the UK and after securing a place winning the East of England’s Best in the Region trophy for the Mens Image Award. Senior Stylist, Marie Atterbury will now compete at the L’OrÊal Colour Trophy 2018 Grand Final to be held on 4th June 2018 in London.

VISITORS are to be welcomed to the Canine Partners Midlands Training Centre to learn more about how the charity’s amazing dogs can transform the lives of people with disabilities.

Keeping things local, their model, Jack Bridges, is a local resident of Rothley and also a school pupil at Rawlins College in Quorn and their make-up artist is Kaye Salmon Makeup of Quorn. The team are thrilled at the news and ecstatic to be through to the finals.

The information sessions, which are to be held on 17 July, offer members of the public a fantastic opportunity to find out more about Canine Partners, what they do as a charity and how to support them. Information sessions are held at the training centre in Osgathorpe, Leicestershire, throughout the year, where you can see a demonstration and hear from an established partner about the difference their canine partner has made to their lives.

The teams had only 30 minutes to create their fashion inspired, flawless winning look to impress the elite group of judges. Out of hundreds of initial entries, their creation wowed the star lined judges and hopefully will do the same on the big day! At the highly acclaimed Grand Final in London on 4th June 2018, they will have just one more opportunity in which to prove both their creative flair and technical ability in their chosen category.

The dogs are trained to carry out a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and dressing a person. They can even help load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency.

If they win they will pick up a once-in-a-lifetime prize package which includes a European Trip to shoot their winning look, a fashion shoot with a leading consumer glossy magazine, plus endless opportunities throughout their winning year!

By attending an information session, it helps to raise awareness and vital funds for the charity, which will lead to Canine Partners being able to re-open their currently closed waiting list for new applicants.

You can see the winning looks at www.lorealcolourtophy.com and keep up with the competition action @lorealeducationuki Instagram and #LCT18 #lorealprouk

‘Daily Boost’ Launch – getting our children and young people active, healthy and happy LEICESTER-SHIRE & Rutland Sport, alongside initial funders Leicestershire County Council are launching the Daily Boost, a programme designed to support children and young people in schools and early years settings to become more active. The Daily Boost aims to encourage children and young people to do 15 minutes of organised activity at school every day. This could be before school, at lunchtime, after school, or during the school day in an ‘active lesson’. Children and young people could walk, run, skip, hop or jump around a set lap or loop at school. Or simply do their favourite sport or activity that gets them active – dancing, cycling, scooting, anything! The Daily Boost is free* and all schools and early years settings will receive resources and rewards and access to a bespoke website to log all activity at www.lrsport.org/dailyboost The Chief Medical Officer recommends that children and young people (5-18 years) should engage in moderate intensity physical activity for at least 60 minutes every day. Being active provides many benefits including improvements to physical and mental wellbeing. 21% of all children aged 5-15 years who had attended school in the last week met the physical activity guidelines of at least 60 minutes of activity each day of the week in 2015**. The Daily Boost is here to tackle and reverse these issues. Schools can now sign up for the Daily Boost, by registering their school to receive resources including posters, flyers and classroom wallcharts. After every ‘boost’ of activity the school records the participation levels on their wallchart and termly on the website for pupils to earn boost bands and certificates! The website also features a Boost Tracker so schools can monitor the number of boost activities and participation numbers undertaken over the term and school year. More information: http://www.lrsport.org/dailyboost

Inspiring women are to be honoured at the inaugural English Women’s Awards 2018 Creative Oceanic are proud to announce the first ever English Women’s Awards 2018, after the enormous success and the positive feedback we have had from the public at the Scottish Women’s Awards 2017. The number of nominations received from the English public over the past months was overwhelming and the full list with finalists has now been compiled. The English Women’s Awards 2018 aim to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of women entrepreneurs, business women, professionals, civil servants, women in uniform, charity workers and many more that help make England a greater place. The black tie event will be held at Athena in Leicester, on Thursday the 26th of June. Rothley Wine Ltd, which sells wine grown at Rothley Wine Estate, is one of the finalists in the Business with under 50 staff category. Liz Robson, director of Rothley Wine Ltd, will find out if this small company managed to win the competition and grab an accolade at the elegant ceremony being held in June. Liz said, “I was both pleased and astonished to find I had been nominated, and I still have no idea who was so kind to have nominated my company which makes wine on an artisan basis. This is a one-woman operation, with sterling help from volunteers, so I never expected to be included in a regional business award. The grapes are grown on the small vineyard and the still wine made on site in the boutique winery.

Events Diary 2018

I am looking forward to attending the event, not only for a rare night off, but to bring Leicestershire wine to the attention of a wider audience.” The glamorous event promises to be an inspiring and memorable night in this year’s events calendar. Numerous prestigious accolades will be awarded to the most deserving women, including CEO of the Year, Creative Industries Leader of the Year, Woman of the Year and many more.

Irfan Younis, CEO of Creative Oceanic said: “The English Women’s Awards aim to celebrate the amazing breadth of talent and the hard work of female professionals and entrepreneurs in the country, whose work often goes un-recognised. “We are very happy to see the huge engagement of the English public who have voted for their favourites to show them the appreciation they deserve. We are looking forward to welcoming inspiring women at the ceremony and delivering another enjoyable event. We wish all the finalists the best of luck.”

With the fond memories of last year’s Mountsorrel REVIVAL still vivid in our minds, preparations for the 2018 event is well underway. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better with a range of new attractions and activities being explored. The Mountsorrel Community Team, who organise the event, have promised to keep residents updated as the time flies by. Debbie MacRae, the Chair of MCT, told us: “We are all so excited to be putting on our fifth REVIVAL. It is always a great day and is the one day in the year when the whole community comes together. This year we will have the new Memorial Centre available to us and we have already many new and established attractions booked inâ€?. Of course, the day itself is at the end of a very long process and the work behind the scenes carries on from one event to the next. One of the Teams concerns is always public safety and as the event gets bigger changes are needed to ensure that everyone who visits the village has a safe and happy time. For this reason, the Team has expanded the road closures this year to include the Green and Watling Street, giving greater freedom for people to move around safely. Specifically, the following Mountsorrel Roads will be closed for the REVIVAL 12th August 2018 from 10:30 to 17:00: • Sileby Road: will be closed from its junction with the Market Place to the bypass junction for the REVIVAL. Access to affected properties will still be possible. A Diversion will be signposted. •

Watling Street: From its junction with the Market Place for about 35 metres. Access to and from affected properties will be possible via the Navins and Crown Lane.

•

The Green: will be closed on both sides from its junctions with Leicester Road to the Navins. Access to affected properties will still be possible. A Diversion will be signposted.

Steve Goodger

Debbie told us: ‘We feel these closures will add to the safety of the event and are a response to feedback we received last year. As usual we are looking for volunteers to help us with the day and we would be happy to hear from anyone who is interested.’ Further information about the MCT and the events it is organising can be found by visiting the website: http://the-mct.co.uk/ For those who want to volunteer or join the MCT, please contact Graham Lloyd on 07775 6161001.

ANSTEY CHESS CLUB ANNUAL SUMMER FETE

The PSFA of Christ Church and St. Peter’s Primary on School will be holding its annual Summer Fete Saturday 30th June, in the school grounds on Rothley Road, Mountsorrel from 11am to 2pm. This promises to be a fun filled family day, with lots of exciting stalls and activities.

Anstey Chess Club meet on Thursday evenings at the Stadon Sports and Social Club in Anstey from 7:30pm. We also have training sessions for beginners/improving players on Saturday mornings at Anstey Community Library from 10am-1pm. New members more than welcome - Grandmasters or just learning. On Thursday 10th May, the Anstey Chess Club played our very first competitive match. The club has derived from the attendees to the Saturday morning sessions and some members felt that they'd like to give competitive chess a go to help them improve. Our team was Mick Sandham, myself, Mick Squire and John Whitmore.

We made our way to Ashby De La Zouch - thanks to the 'luck of the draw' - to play the match. I thought I was owed a favour knowing the draw master but this is clearly not the case! The format of Summer's 'Harrod Cup' is a 'rapidplay' tournament where one plays the time limit for each same opponent with both colours, white and black with a specific chess matches game. It usually makes for exciting and this match was to prove no exception.

All funds raised will go back into the school to purchase extra classroom equipment to enhance I, as the match captain for Anstey, tossed a coin for colours and we played with black and vary the children’s learning experiences and pieces first game. John Whitmore lost his game first on bottom board against an also supply exciting outdoor play equipment to opponent stronger than him on paper. Next was a loss for Mick Squire on 3rd board after encourage healthy, active play and to stretch the I'd heard Mick ask his opponent what he'd like when Queening a pawn. By far the most children’s imaginations. board was Mick Sandham on board 1. After 20 or so years out of the game, interesting We have had fantastic local and national support lad with huge potential and just after I had check-mated my Mick was facing a young for our grand raffle and a long list of fabulous prizes with very little time on my clock, I had a look at Mick's game, just as he checkopponent including passes for SnowDome, Play 360, Barney’s mated his opponent. After the first round of games, we were level pegging at 2-2. Play Barn, Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Climbing Club, We swapped the colours and this time we had the white pieces. The first match to finish plus gorgeous treats from Nelly Belly Gifts, Emma’s Nail was John again and unfortunately, he came second out of two in his game. Mick Lounge, Mind Body & Soulfullness, New Dimensions, Sandham and myself finished at roughly the same time again. I had forced a resignation The Hair Gallery, Colours Hair and Nails and Studio 28. from my opponent during the middlegame and Mick had lost to his young opponent We also have lots more great prizes yet to be which meant we were 4-3 down with just Mick Squire to finish playing. Mick's opponent revealed! had a perpetual check on offer and once he was (illegally) made aware of the match There will be something for everyone on the day, situation, he repeated the moves to force a draw. including, bouncy castle fun, face painting, village We green games for the children (and any game lost the game 4.5-3.5 and personally, I was extremely pleased with the team's performance. Mick Squire earned a draw in his first ever competitive adults!!), game and we cake stall, bric a brac, many refreshments proved We will now have to wait to find and a fabulous barbecue, with meats kindly and that we are not there to make up the numbers. out our opponents in the next round. very generously supplied again by M.E. Roberts family butcher of Mountsorrel. There will also be June Club Nights - At time of going to print, we intend to be at the Stadon Sports and performances by the staff Social Club on Thursdays 7th, 14th and 21st June from 7:30pm. The 23rd Charnwood Marathon 2018 Hundreds of walkers and runners from Leicestershire and further afield took part in a dull Saturday morning from Quorn and although the weather was not perfect everyone agreed that it was a `most refreshing` and pleasant day out. The event was hosted by The Rotary Club of Blaby Meridian who were supporting MIND (mental health charity), CHILDRENS`AIR AMBULANCE and other charities also supported by Rotary.

New Age Kurling @ Fearon Hall, Rectory Road, Loughborough (5 minutes walk from The Rushes as very limited parking on site)

When?: Thursdays What time?: 1.30pm -3.00pm How much?: ÂŁ2 per session (incl refreshments!) Why not take this opportunity to come and try this popular and sociable activity for yourself? A fun, friendly pastime with no experience necessary. No need to book, just turn up and take part. Also suitable for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility.

The walkers meandered at their own pace enjoying the beautiful countryside with either friends or family while the runners treated the event more seriously in a competitive manner. The amazing fact was that in the 15 mile route for the runners only 1 minute 17 seconds separated the first 3 runners, it was ALMOST A PHOTO FINISH with Robert Bardsley (2.17.53) closely followed by Nick White of Charnwood AC (2.18.40) and Ian Paramore of Barrow Runners (2.19.10)

)RU PRUH LQIR SOHDVH FRQWDFW $JH 8. &KDUQZRRG 2IILFH RQ RU FDOO )HDURQ +DOO RQ

The times recorded in the long 27 mile route were equally amazing with Ian Cox finishing 1st (3.52.43) closely followed by Matthew Deniff of Poplar Club (3.58.15) and in 3rd place Edward De Sallis Young (4.00.58) Nevertheless both walkers and runners agreed that it was a great day out despite the weather with certificates and badges given out at the finish with some home made hot soup and various foods etc available to all walkers and runners who were tired and exhausted. A fabulous total of approx ÂŁ4200 (at time of going to press) was raised for the above mentioned deserving charities. The Rotary Club of Blaby Meridian would like to thank everyone involved for making the event such a success. Further details regarding Rotary and The Rotary Club of Blaby Meridian are available from David French on 07942 011884 or web page www.bmrotary.uk ,we will be pleased to hear from you.
