Monday 15th April 2019 Deadline and delivery dates are subject to change depending on how far we are ahead or behind.
Since Joe’s death, the JHMT continues to raise awareness of SADS and sudden heart deaths. The charity provides free CPR training, helps to fund community defibrillators and campaigns for better understanding of SADS. The JHMT also runs the Inspire Awards, a small grants scheme that helps inspire young people to fulfill their potential – something which the victims of SADS are cruelly denied. Steve Humphries, chair of the JHMT, said: “Everyone’s welcome to come along and be part of this special evening in Rothley village - perfect for families, from babies in buggies to mums, dads taking part with their children and friends. It’s also good to see the fun run is becoming popular with local scouts and guides groups, junior sports clubs and schools. You can run, walk or jog but most important is that you just enjoy taking part! at the 6th JHMT Joe’s Jog family fun mile event. This also brings people together in memory of Joe and helps to raise vital funds for JHMT's ongoing work to reduce the incidence of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) in young people. “

Edward Argar MP Member of Parliament for Charnwood "As it gets a bit warmer, even if only temporarily, it is beginning to feel as if Spring is on the way. After a long and gloomy winter, the bare branches are beginning to show signs of new life as the countryside starts to wake up. At this time of year I often reflect on how lucky I am to live in our beautiful county of Leicestershire, with some of the most wonderful countryside and wildlife in the UK on our doorstep. But as we look around us, and enjoy the countryside, we should also reflect on our responsibility to protect and enhance our natural environment; to support biodiversity and nature; and to cut carbon, reduce waste, and improve our air and water quality. On a national level, I am pleased that the Government has set out a strong and ambitious programme to do just this in the 25 Year Environment Plan, and in the draft Environment Bill which sets out a new and exciting direction for environmental protection in the U.K. I recently met with the team from our local Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust to discuss the Draft Bill and have raised their suggestions on how to further improve it directly with the Environment Secretary. We must ensure we are the first generation committed to leaving the environment in a better state than we found it for future generations to protect and enjoy. To realise this ambition, among other things, we must work together to reduce the level of plastic waste that pollutes our oceans and litters our countryside. Protecting and enhancing our environment is something we should all be able to unite around, supporting improvements at a national level, but also continuing to all play our part as individuals. Locally too, positive steps are being taken to achieve this. Across the country community groups and individuals are focusing their efforts on reducing the level of plastic waste in their homes and businesses, and in Rothley a determined local resident has decided to take action. Maxine Linnell co-founded 'Plastic free Rothley' after taking the plastic-free challenge set by a Cornwall-based group "Surfers Against Sewage". The challenge aims to encourage communities to play their part in reducing dependence on single-use plastics by everyone in society. I understand that there are now around 40 people, and a number of local businesses and organisations including Rothley Community Library, who are actively involved and working towards making Rothley plastic-free. I am very encouraged by the real interest local Rothley people have taken in this, and the determination to each play their part in reducing the plastic that is used, and thrown away. While Government's have an important role to play, so toodoes each and every one of us. If we all do our bit, and make some small changes, it will cumulatively have a big, positive, impact on our environment. Reducing our use of single-use plastics is just one of these, and I wish 'Plastic Free Rothley members/supporters the best of luck in playing their part in this."

NEW CAPTAINS FOR THE NEW GOLFING SEASON
Netball now sessions
New netball sessions are giving women a flexible way to play the sport.
Rothley Park Golf Club is pleased to introduce its elected captains for the 2019 golfing year.
Rod Pearson is this year’s Men’s Captain. He has played golf since the age of 12 and has been a member of Rothley Park for 45 years.
“The course, in my view, is the best in Leicestershire and it continues to improve. It is a friendly and welcoming club and I have made many friends over the years. It is a true members' club with a great mix of social as well as golfing activities. I am proud to be the men's captain and look forward to working with Caroline in the year ahead.
The fun and informal sessions are being run in partnership with Leicestershire County Council and Leicestershire and Rutland Sport.
“My chosen charity for my year in office is Home Start Horizons. I am a Trustee of this local charity which covers Charnwood, Leicester, Melton, Rutland, Blaby and Wigston. We support families who have at least one child under five and may be dealing with a range of issues including social isolation, domestic abuse, poverty, illness (including post-natal) and disability. Our aim is to give children the best possible start in life. I believe we can make a real difference.” The Ladies Captain is Caroline Simpson. Unlike Rod who has been a golfer since a youngster, Caroline decided to take up golf after retiring nine years ago.
The borough council’s Active Charnwood team is hosting the Netball Now sessions at Wreake Valley Academy in Syston.
They’re aimed at women over 16 who simply want to turn up and play without any coaching or commitments. Rothley Park Golf Club 2019 Captains – Rod Pearson and Caroline Simpson
“I started from scratch having never swung a golf club before and after a few lessons with Club Professional, Katie Tebbet, I was hooked. That said, I do not think I would ever have had the courage to join a golf club if it had not been for the friendliest of ladies I met in the Pro shop who offered to take me out on the course and persuaded me to join and I have never looked back. I started with a handicap of 36 and I now play off 16 and whilst I know I won’t be a scratch player I am always striving to reduce my handicap further. “What I particularly like about Rothley Park is that it is a really forward-looking club where mixed gender start sheets are the norm giving a great opportunity to play mixed golf. It’s a huge honour to have been asked to undertake such an important role and I am very exciting and looking forward to the forthcoming year working alongside Men’s Captain, Rod. “My chosen charity for the year to HCPT a registered charity offering holidays for disabled and disadvantaged people from around the UK. Every Easter over 1,000 disabled and disadvantaged children enjoy a fun and safe week in Lourdes, staying in hotels with their volunteer helpers. This charity is very dear to my heart as my sister runs the 215 Leicester Group and every year, she and the other volunteers work tirelessly to raise funds to take a group of local children on an amazing journey.” This year’s senior men’s section captain is Eric Johnson and co-ordinator for the senior ladies is Sally Lee. Junior Captain is Elliot Izard. If you are considering taking up golf or are a golfer who has recently moved to the area and would like more information then get in touch with Club Manager, Danny Spillane, or visit the club’s website www.rothleypark.co.uk.
Samantha Chamberlain, community sport and physical activity development officer said: “These sessions are perfect for anyone who enjoys playing netball but doesn’t want to play in a competitive environment. “It’s not a coached session, people are able to simply turn up, pay a small fee and play a game of netball.” Sessions cost £3 and all you need to do is turn up and bring appropriate footwear. The sessions get underway on Thursday April 18, 6.30pm-7.30pm. If you want more information, contact Sam Chamberlain at samantha.chamberlain@ charnwood.gov.uk or 01509 632534. Keep up to date with Active Charnwood on social media, follow @Activecharnwood or like their page on Facebook.

Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride returns for its 9th year Every mile cycled brings us closer to a cure The Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride is back again for its 9th year running. With up to 300 cyclists taking part last year, the organisers Alex’s Wish are pleased to announce it will be taking place on Sunday, 12th May. This year’s main sponsor is Glynis Wright and Partners, with additional sponsorship from Nisa (Bradleys store) in Rothley, The Woodmans Stroke Pub in Rothley, United Carpets and Jay Webb Consultancy with Pedal Power as the on-site bike specialists. Emma Hallam Charity Founder and Alex’s Mum says “It would be so lovely to have you come along and join us this year - you’ll get a healthy dose of fresh air, enjoy spectacular views around the stunning Charnwood Forest whilst cycling for an incredibly worthwhile cause. It’s a fabulous opportunity to get back into cycling again after the winter months, so whether or not you are a keen cyclist, there’s never been a better time to dust of your bike in time for the summer months. We have a 10-mile, 20-mile and a 50-mile cycle route. The 10-mile route will provide an entry level distance for first time participants, whilst the 50-mile route will be a longer and more challenging route for those who want to push themselves further and the 20 and 50 mile includes a steep climb up Beacon Hill road. We are incredibly well supported locally and it’s always nice to see our supporters out and about on their bikes, having fun and raising much needed funds for Alex’s Wish. The start and finish line is at The Rothley Centre in Rothley, Leicestershire with the route taking place on open roads. “The route is well sign-posted,” explains Emma, “and because the event takes place on a Sunday morning the roads tend to be quiet with traffic. At the end, you’ll be treated to complimentary yummy home cake cakes and refreshments – a perfect thought to get you through the ride.” This is a sponsored ride in aid of Alex’s Wish, a registered charity set-up to raise vital funds for an incurable childhood muscle wasting disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Alex’s Wish are investing in innovative medical breakthroughs to help all children lead a longer and more fulfilled life with the aim to finding a cure. All money that is raised through registration fees and sponsorship goes direct to this fantastic cause. The event organisers would also welcome volunteers to marshal and help out with refreshments on the day. If you are unable to ride but would like to help, please get in touch. To register for this fantastic and worthwhile cause, take advantage of the discounted early-bird entry fee to register before 30th April – the easiest and quickest way to so register is at www.alexswish.co.uk/event/charnwoodforest-cycle-ride or email zoe@alexswish.co.uk Alex’s Wish is a registered charity no: 1148845. The Charnwood Gardener Making the Most of April
April is usually the time when the garden finally shows signs of shaking off winter, as one might a lingering cold. March is sneezy and unsettled, with good days and bad days, but come April a sense of healthy resolve starts to be felt around the beds and borders. Recently, of course, the weather rarely behaves itself (20 degrees in February?!) and nothing is off the table, so it wouldn’t be surprising if by the time you’re reading this the trees are losing their leaves and there are bush fires in Bristol. But even if April acts only a little as it should, then it’s really the most remarkable month for just being in the garden and soaking up the fresh, vibrant vibes. It makes you feel like a half-dead houseplant suddenly finding itself back in the Amazon. The soft flushes of the early bulbs have faded, and in their place come sudden shocks of vivid colour. Tulips open in succession, their shades as varied as bright umbrellas in spring showers. Flowering currants and Kerria erupt at the back of the border in a mesmerising clash of hot pink and acid yellow. And everything is suddenly pulsing with life – herbaceous perennials that have been sheltering underground now bulge forth in gorgeous, glossy-green mounds. But by far the biggest treat is away from our tended plots (or, more likely, suddenly very weedy plots – they’re making the most of it too). Head out to any number of secret woodland spots and witness the perfect, ethereal carpet of violet-blue. The bluebells have arrived, and on a sunny April day it’s as though pieces of lazy sky are dreaming on the ground. APRIL TIP: Weed, weed, weed. Getting on top of it now will pay off later. Even better – lay a deep woodchip mulch and suppress annual weeds long-term for minimal effort.

New rounds of Charnwood New dates released for food grants to benefit community safety course
Community groups and charities are being invited to apply for funding in 2019. The Charnwood Grants scheme is run by Charnwood Borough Council in a bid to help local organisations, charities and community groups access funding support.
Food handlers who have not received any formal training are being encouraged to sign up to a food safety course. Charnwood Borough Council runs the Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering and offers people the opportunity to learn the basics of food hygiene.
Cllr Deborah Taylor, the Council’s lead member for communities, said: “Our grant scheme helps support the local community and have benefitted many groups and individuals over the years. We want to see that continue so I would encourage people to look at what’s on offer and apply.”
The course is aimed at people who are starting out in the catering industry and require some formal training. Cllr Margaret Smidowicz, the Council’s lead member for regulatory services said “It’s important that people who handle and serve food to the public understand the basics.
So far the Council has awarded around £100,000 during the 18/19 rounds of funding.
“Our food safety team has developed this course which is a nationally recognised award to improve people’s knowledge and understanding. I would like to encourage those who have not had any formal training before to sign up for one of the courses available this year.” The course will be held on several dates throughout the next 12 months at the Council’s Southfields Offices in Loughborough. Dates include: April 4 July 4 - October 24 - January 23, 2020
“It is important to ensure that as much information as possible is included in your application. Some bids miss out because they lack detail, so take your time. If you need help, we can offer support and advice to complete your application, just get in touch.”
The Sileby Community Library was awarded £2,000 to upgrade its IT systems. Karen Freaks, from the library, said: “We were really pleased to receive £2,000 through the grants scheme. The money is being used towards providing visitors and volunteers at the library with more up-to-date IT equipment. “We’re hoping the new technology will enhance the service we provide to our customers and enable digital workshops to be run for the wider community to improve IT skills. “The support we received during the application process was helpful and flexible. If any community groups in Charnwood think they could benefit from some extra funding, then I would recommend they have a look at the grants to see if they’re eligible. It’s easy to do!”
People who attend will learn about legislation, food safety hazards, temperature control, food handling and principles of safe food storage.
There’s a range of grants on offer including: Community Development and Engagement – Deadline April 22, 2019 This grant can provide up to £10,000 for organisations currently running projects with community benefit in Charnwood.
The cost of the course is £50 (including VAT) per person. There are a limited number of places available on each course, so booking early to avoid disappointment is advised.
Community Facilities Grants and Feasibility Studies – Deadline April 22, 2019 The community facilities grants scheme can award funding of up to £20,000, to a maximum of 50% of the cost of a project which assists with the renovation and improvement of community buildings, and small-scale environmental improvement schemes.
For further information and to book, please contact a member of the food safety team on 01509 634656 or visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/foodsafetycourse
Loughborough Community Grants – Deadline April 23, 2019 These grants can provide up to £2,000 for properly constituted voluntary sector and community organisations and projects, which deliver activities with community benefits in Loughborough.

The Loughborough Half Marathon set to raise money for domestic abuse survivors Sunday 7th April sees the return of The Loughborough half marathon and team relay. The 13.1mile course has been described as one of the toughest in the East Midlands. Available places are hotly contested, with only 800 up for grabs this year. Organised by the Loughborough based charity Living Without Abuse, all the money raised from the event goes towards the charity’s vital and much needed work of supporting men, women and children who have had their lives shattered by domestic abuse. Living Without Abuse’s Event Organiser Gina King said: “This is the third and possibly last year the half-marathon will use this route and we are hoping for an excellent turnout. We only have 800 places available this year. The run is all on pavements, footpaths and pathways and is certainly tough but a fantastic course through some beautiful countryside.” This year the charity hopes to raise even more than last year’s figure of £20,000. It costs £400 to support just one person who is experiencing domestic abuse, so the money raised from this event makes a huge difference to people’s lives. Registration is now open and the entry fee for the half marathon is £26 for unaffiliated runners and £24 if you’re affiliated to a running club. There is also a Team Relay Challenge with four people per team with a total entry fee of £70.00. The event is co-sponsored by Duncan & Toplis Loughborough, A Plan Insurance Loughborough and the charity’s new headline sponsor for all events during 2019 Arch Communications. For more information and to enter the event please visit http://www.lwa.org.uk/events or email gina@lwa.org.uk for an entry form.

Reminder over registering to vote for local elections
Highcliffe Amateur Theatrical Society Spring Play 2019
The last chance to register to vote for May’s local elections in Charnwood is April 12.
This year’s Spring Play doesn’t need much of an introduction. For those of you over a certain age (we won’t specify) I am sure that this will bring back so many hilarious memories for you. For our younger audience, once seen you will want to catch up on all the back copies, they will keep you amused for hours.
Charnwood Borough Council has 52 councillors across 28 wards and all seats are up for election on May 2 this year. Parish and town council seats across the borough are also up for election. There are 131,207 people on the electoral register in Charnwood so most residents are already registered. However, if you are not, please visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote before April 12. Geoff Parker, Returning Officer, said: “I would encourage people who are not already registered to vote to apply sooner rather than later. “Although the last date to apply is April 12, if you leave it until the last minute and there are any issues with your application then you may not be registered in time to vote in May’s local elections.” Visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/local_ elections_2019 for more details about this year’s local election. Keep up with the latest local Charnwood elections news by following the Council on Twitter @CharnwoodBC and look for the hashtag #CharnElections19. The borough council is responsible for many services including bin collections, looking after 250,000 acres of parks and open spaces, determining planning applications, homelessness, managing 5,500 council homes and licensing to name but a few. The borough council is also responsible for three leisure centres, Loughborough Town Hall, Charnwood Museum and events such as Loughborough Fair.

I’ve got the freedom of my home back... I felt so frustrated at not being able to use the upstairs rooms in my home and unhappy that I had to have my bed in my front room, instead of sleeping in my own bedroom, but I no longer felt safe using the stairs. My stairs are quite steep and narrow and I was doubtful if a stair lift could be fitted, but they came and measured up and everything was dealt with and fitted in no time at all! Everyone was extremely helpful, polite and pleasant to have in my home and the results could not be better. I would certainly recommend Candor to anyone considering a stair lift.
