Joe’s Jog is an inclusive and family-friendly fun run giving families and children the chance to be part of the Rothley 10k evening. Joe was 14 when he collapsed and died suddenly while out jogging with a friend near his Rothley home. He was a victim of SADS – sudden arrhythmic death syndrome – a heart condition which can strike anyone at any time, particularly otherwise fit and healthy young people.

Since Joe’s death, the JHMT continues to raise awareness of SADS and sudden heart deaths. The charity provides free CPR training, helps to fund community defibrillators and campaigns for better understanding of SADS. The JHMT also runs the Inspire Awards, a small grants scheme that helps inspire young people to fulfill their potential – something which the victims of SADS are cruelly denied.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance

It’s Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride’s 10th Birthday

Article by Klara Hesling

2020 sees the 10th year of this fun and challenging cycle ride. Taking place on Sunday, 17th May we are pleased to announce that our headline sponsor this year is Spirit Pharmacy, with additional sponsorship from Nuffield Health, New St Chambers, Nisa (Bradleys store) in Rothley, Vistage, and Jay Webb Consultancy with Pedal Power as the on-site bike specialists. Emma Hallam Charity Founder and Alex’s Mum says “It is amazing that this will be the 10th year of running this event, it started out as a joint event with Rothley Primary School PTA and has grown into a wonderful family cycling event. The ride is in and around Charnwood - you’ll get a healthy dose of fresh air, enjoy spectacular views around the stunning Charnwood Forest whilst cycling for an incredibly worthwhile cause. It’s a fabulous opportunity to get back into cycling again after the winter months, so whether or not you are a keen cyclist, there’s never been a better time to dust of your bike in time for the summer months. We have a 10-mile, 20-mile and a 50-mile cycle route. The 10-mile route will provide an entry level distance for first time participants, whilst the 50-mile route will be a longer and more challenging route for those who want to push themselves further and the 20 and 50 mile includes a steep climb up Beacon Hill road. We are incredibly well supported locally and it’s always nice to see our supporters out and about on their bikes, having fun and raising much needed funds for Alex’s Wish. The start and finish line is at The Rothley Centre in Rothley, Leicestershire with the route taking place on open roads. “The route is well sign-posted,” explains Emma, “and because the event takes place on a Sunday morning the roads tend to be quiet with traffic. At the end, you’ll be treated to complimentary yummy home cake cakes and refreshments and a medal – a perfect thought to get you through the ride.” This is a sponsored ride in aid of Alex’s Wish, a registered charity set-up to raise vital funds for an incurable childhood muscle wasting disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, but for the first time this year we will also be working with local family fund – Following Felix, established by another local family living with Duchenne. Alex’s Wish are investing in innovative medical breakthroughs to help all children lead a longer and more fulfilled life with the aim to finding a cure. All money that is raised through registration fees and sponsorship goes direct to this fantastic cause. The event organisers would also welcome volunteers to marshal and help out with refreshments on the day. If you are unable to ride but would like to help, please get in touch. To register for this fantastic and worthwhile cause, take advantage of the discounted early-bird entry fee to register before 30th April – the easiest and quickest way to so register is at www.alexswish.co.uk/event/charnwood-forest-cycle-ride or email zoe@alexswish.co.uk Alex’s Wish is a registered charity no: 1148845. Drive it Day on 26th April at Little Markfield Farm

A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Wealth Protection and Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Forest Road, Markfield, Leicester, LE67 9UQ JOIN US at Little Markfield Farm for a road run around the local area; meet at the farm at 10am for a cuppa, before setting off at 11am taking in the local scenery before returning to the farm. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).

IS THIS THE YEAR YOU LEARN TO PLAY GOLF?

Over 6,000 trees given away

If the answer is yes, then Rothley Park Golf Club’s Teaching Academy is the ideal opportunity to see if golf is for you - without the commitment of being a club member. Those wishing to ‘have a go’ or to brush 4 up their golfing skills are being offered an excellent package of group and individual coaching with Club Professional Katie Tebbet, and a chance to meet fellow beginners and improvers and to have the full use of the club’s practice facilities, with access to the course as and when Katie thinks you are ready. Katie says: “The Academy is aimed at adult beginners or those who have perhaps dabbled at the game but never really got going and those who have played a bit but not for the past few years and need help to get back into ‘the swing’. You don’t need to be a club member and you don’t even have to own golf clubs as we are happy to lend you what you need at this stage.”

Thousands of free trees have been handed out to residents, community groups and parish councils in the borough. Charnwood Borough Council gave away over 6,000 free trees after teaming up with the National Forest and partner idverde for the second year running. Cllr Roy Rollings, lead member for transformation, said: “This is the second time we’ve ran the scheme and we were really pleased with the positive response. It was great to see so many residents coming to collect their free trees from Syston and Loughborough. “This is one of the ways we can help make our borough even greener and is part of our commitment to plant 100,000 trees in Charnwood over the next four years.

Membership & Communications Committee Member, Jim Needham, is the Academy Co-Ordinator, he says it’s a great way to find out if golf is for you, or, if you are already a golfer, but not currently a club member, an excellent way to meet our members and get your game back in shape. “Last year we had a great group in the Academy.” Says Jim. “Many joined as club members and the feedback we received was that coaching and playing together created new friendships and gave Academy members the confidence to really give it a go. If you would like to know more about the 2020 Spring Academy package, please give the club a ring and they’ll put you in touch with Katie or myself.” The 2020 Spring Academy coaching package runs from April to September with group and individual lessons. The cost is just £205 and in addition to coaching also includes full access to practice facilities, access to the course at selected times to play with fellow Academy members (at the discretion of the Professional), or with a full playing member. It also includes access to golf club social facilities and functions, free use of the necessary golf equipment for lessons, discounts on golf equipment from the shop, club members as mentors when you are ready to try out your skills on the course and the opportunity to follow on with a reduced rate membership to practice and consolidate your golfing skills.” FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ROTHLEY PARK ACADEMY PLEASE CONTACT JIM NEEDHAM ON 0116 287 3623 OR KATIE TEBBET PROFESSIONAL SHOP ON 0116 230 2809. TO SEE MORE ABOUT ROTHLEY PARK VISIT www.rothleypark.co.uk

“We are planning on running the scheme again later this year so keep an eye on our website and social media channels for more information.” Information about future free tree giveaways will be available through the Council’s website and social media channels. Households and community groups were able to choose up to three trees, with a choice of three varieties; holly, hazel and cherry plum. idverde manages the borough’s parks and open spaces on behalf of the Council. The National Forest is right in the heart of the country, embracing 200 square miles of the Midlands. It spans across parts of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire and aims to link the two ancient Forests of Charnwood and Needwood.

The Charnwood Gardener I Had a Little Fig Tree

This month I thought I’d explore a garden job that causes endless bafflement – pruning fig trees. Perhaps you’re like me: I remind myself of the steps on a yearly basis and, without fail, have forgotten them completely when the time comes to employ them. Admittedly this is a little niche and you may, in fact, not be in possession of a fig tree, but I am certain that as an esteemed reader of The Charnwood Gardener you will be nonetheless intrigued. Or, if you really don’t give a fig, turn the page!

Peckleton Lane, Desford, LE9 9JT

75THH VE DAY

We’ll assume you’re growing your fig as a bush, rather than a more complex form. You want it to be shaped like an open goblet, balanced all the way round. This allows light to reach all parts of the tree, which means better fruit. There are three key times to prune: Early spring is the time for your formative prune. Remove any branches that don’t fit with your goblet shape, any that are touching or damaged and any new suckers that are coming up from the roots. You can also thin the canopy a little if it has become too dense. Early summer is the time to cut back all new shoots to five leaves from their base. Ripe fruit will be ready to pick in late summer to early autumn.

STREET PARTY CELEBRATION

FRIDAY 8TH MAY GATES OPEN AT 1.00PM

Autumn is when you remove any larger fruit that hasn’t ripened. However, be sure to leave all pea-sized fruit, as these will stay on the tree through winter and form next year’s harvest. Simple, right? Glad we fig-ured that out. APRIL TIP: Leave gone-over bulbs in lawns as long as possible before mowing. Six weeks from flowering is ideal - they’ll thank you next year!

Join us at our facility here in Desford Leicester, to celebrate the 75th VE Day Celebration on Friday 8th May 2020, which is of course now a public bank holiday.

ROTHLEY/BIRSTALL BIRDWATCHING CLUB

We have created a traditional 1940's "street party" theme to give us the ultimate feel of the VE Day Celebration back in 1945.

Peter Flood

Not only do we have modern day British Forces, we have the famous "Cosby Victory Show" joining us, with lot's of WWII vehicles and weapons on display, we even have a museum onsite!

Present: Tuesday, April 7th., 2020 at 7.30 p.m. ICELAND, LAND OF ICE AND FIRE by Nigel Slater.

We have an outdoor stage with some nationally known 1940's big bands - hits of the blitz, a Vera Lynn tribute show, jazz singers, Gi dancers, catering, outdoor bars, plus lots more going on.

Nigel is a return speaker and is always enthusiastic about his subject. This time he takes to Iceland, a country situated in the North Atlantic with its long summer days of 24-hour sunshine and short winter days with only a few hours of daylight. It is blessed with beautiful scenery characterised by active volcanoes, lava fields, mountains and glaciers along with Arctic Foxes, reindeer and the occasional Polar Bear along and Arctic birds notably Skuas, Puffins and Kittiwakes. This meeting is preceded by a short AGM.

A great afternoon for your family & friends on the bank holiday weekend

Get involved with this year’s Increase to local element of council Great British Spring Clean Communities in Charnwood are being encouraged to help give the borough a spring clean as part of a national tidy-up campaign. The Great British Spring Clean is organised by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy and will be held across the country between March 20 and April 13, 2020. Charnwood Borough Council is encouraging residents and community groups to get involved and organise events in their local areas over the threeweek campaign. The Council can help by providing free litter-picking equipment and organising the collection of rubbish and recycling. Groups could arrange litter picks or undertake any other tasks which will keep the borough looking tidy. The Council is also arranging its own litter picks in key areas. Councillor Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member of contracts said: “I would like to encourage organisations, clubs, schools, community groups, parish councils and residents in Charnwood to take part in this year’s Great British Spring Clean." “It’s a great opportunity to come together and take pride in our local area by keeping the borough tidy and free of litter.” “We would like to offer our support to those getting involved in the campaign so I would urge people to get in touch if you need our help.” The Council has a limited amount of equipment available and people are being urged to get in touch as soon as possible. Equipment will be issued on a first come first served basis. The Council is being supported by partners Idverde which manages the Council’s parks and green spaces, and Serco, which runs the refuse, recycling and street cleansing service. In 2019 more than half a million #LitterHeroes collected more than 900,000 bags of rubbish across the UK. Individuals and groups can register their events at www.greatbritishspringclean.org.uk. If you think the Council could support your event by supplying some litter picking equipment, please email cleaner.greener@charnwood.gov.uk.

BOOK LAUNCH On the morning of Saturday 28 March the Rothley Heritage Trust is launching a new local history book at the Rothley Court Hotel on Westfield Lane. From 10.30 to 12.30 in the atmospheric Templar Chapel at the Hotel the new 244 page book Frederick Merttens, the Last Lord of Rothley’s English Manor and Soke will be on sale at £15 each. 103 pages are in colour The book tells the story of Frederick Merttens, a German-born international cotton trader based in Manchester, who bought up the bankrupt Rothley Estate in 1894 with one eye on how he could enjoy the role of the Lordship of an English Manorial system. Merttens extended and improved the Temple Manor House & Chapel and moved in with his new wife Margaret (Howell) in 1897. There Frederick and Margaret made a new family together, and changed the face of Rothley with a Great Central Railway station on estate land, started the Rothley Garden Suburb and created Rothley Park Golf Course and Club. In 1925 Merttens transferred all his holdings into the company Rothley Temple Estates Ltd which is still active in 2020 in changing the face of Rothley. Author and local historian Terry Sheppard will be on hand at the launch to explain the little exhibition set up for the occasion in the Templar Chapel.

tax approved

Charnwood Borough Council has agreed to raise its share of council tax by less than 9p a week for a Band D property. The increase will see the annual charge for an average Band D property rise £4.43 (3.63 per cent) to £126.52 from April 1, 2020. The Loughborough Special Rate, the equivalent of a parish precept in villages and paid by residents of the town, will increase for the first time since 2016 to £76.46 a year. The increase was agreed at full Council on Monday February 24. At the meeting 33 councillors were in favour of the increase, 13 were against and there was one abstention. Councillor Tom Barkley, lead member for finance and property services, said: “We put forward what we believed to be a reasonable increase to protect our frontline services as local government funding continues to decrease. “The Loughborough Special Rate will increase for the first time in four years. “Even with these increases, we will still have one of the lowest council tax rates in the country. “This increase will not cover the reduction in government funding. That’s why we are planning to use some of our reserves and developing plans to increase our income from other sources such as through investment in commercial property. “We remain committed to delivering excellent services to residents and we will continue to ensure they are running as efficiently as possible.” Charnwood Borough Council currently has the 23rd lowest council tax charge out of 201 district councils in the country. Council tax pays for a range of services provided Charnwood Borough Council, Leicestershire County Council, Leicestershire Police and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue and the parish council where you live (or Charnwood Borough Council for people in Loughborough). The Charnwood element accounts for less than 10 per cent of the total bill. For more information about the budget, see the February 24 report to Council.

Friends of the Charnwood Forest

Dr D McNeil

Chez Grey? On Monday February 17th, Peter Liddle, the former county archaeologist, gave a talk to the Friends of the Charnwood Forest about Bradgate Park, and in particular Bradgate House. Using old documents and numerous photographic illustrations he was able to reconstruct at least some of the history of that estate, starting with mesolithic occupants some 14,000 to 12,000 years ago, up to the present day. His main subject, however, was centred around the house itself in which digs have taken place over the last 5 years. The first site was what was probably an old lodge or keeper’s house. Here he expressed surprise at how near the surface the actual archaeology lay. As much of his work previously had been concentrated on sites in the city, where the interesting levels could be several feet below the present-day surface, it is not surprising that he was a little astonished. The next year’s dig was in the courtyard of the old house, where foundations were found of an older building. As the oldest document had termed the ‘house’ as a ‘lodge’, it could be that the present ruin was of a later date. Did Lady Jane Grey live in that ‘lodge’ or was the brick constuction we know her home? Evidence is at present a little ambiguous. The ‘new’ house was abandoned in the mid nineteenth century, and the gable wall of the Great Hall collapsed in a gale in 1895. In the 1930s, when the park passed into public ownership, the council had the ruin ‘improved’, including the ruin of a tower which had not been there before. The digging then moved to the stables, where various interesting finds on its layout were made, including a dump of old horse leg bones – these may be the left-overs from dogs’ dinners. The building itself was still in use after the house was left to decay; its materials may have been taken finally to be used in other building works. They went back to the house for the final year of the dig. Here there were restrictions as to how far down they could dig, for they were not able to move any floors they came across because the building is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. In one place they did find a pit which was full of old pottery sherds. In another they followed the foundations of an older building up to a modern wall. They also found numerous drains, one of which contained a plastic glove, and gave a clue to the work of the restorers in the 1920s. One thing that was evident in the old documents which may have deserved a mention – in the first document it was titled Brodgate park; in the second Broadgate park, and as we call it, Bradgate park. It does now look, however, both from the archaeology and from recently discovered documents, as if Lady Jane probably inhabited the stone house found in the excavations and that brick house mostly predates her short life.

Organ donation Successful Money Raising Quiz Evening changes this Spring For The MacMillan Cancer Charity Friday, 28th February was the 12th anniversary of the MacMillan Charity Quiz Evening which is held throughout the UK when all contestants taking part take their places at the same time on the same day. Once more the Inner Wheel Club of The Soar Valley was very proud to take part in this special event. The evening began with 80 people seated around 13 tables searching their brains for answers to the questions and eagerly awaiting the interval when they could refresh themselves with lots of good food and drink and compare notes with others before settling down for the second half of the evening. The winners of this year’s contest were a group named ‘Calamity Jane’ and their leader is pictured second right being presented with their prize by IW President Pat Wood as question master Ivan Brookes and organiser Janet Hilliar look on. The presentation was followed by much applause and cheers when it was announced that our evening had raised the amazing amount of ÂŁ850.00.

THE LAW around organ donation is changing in England. This means that from spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered an organ donor when they die unless they had recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups. This is commonly referred to as an ‘opt out’ system. Your family would always be involved before donation takes place, so it is really important that you choose whether you want to be a donor and discuss what you want to happen with your family, so your decision is clear and they can have peace of mind knowing that your decision is being honoured. New round of grants on offer to benefit community Community groups and charities in Charnwood are being invited to apply for funding in 2020. Charnwood Borough Council has launched its new rounds of Charnwood Grants in a bid to help local organisations, charities and community led projects to access funding support. Cllr Deborah Taylor, the Council’s lead member for communities, said: “Our grants scheme has returned for another year and we’re encouraging local community groups, charities and organisations which may need some extra funding to look at what’s on offer. “We have a range of different grants to benefit a variety of projects. The scheme has helped many communities over the years, and we want to see that continue. “If you’re thinking of applying then make sure you take time to look at all of the information available and include as much detail as possible in your application. If you need help with your application, then just get in touch with our team who will be happy to help.â€? So far the Council has awarded around ÂŁ140,000 to local projects during the 19/20 rounds of funding. The Baldwin Trust, a charity which operates specially adapted, wheelchair friendly narrowboat cruises, crewed by volunteers, from Pillings Lock Marina in Barrow and Leicester Marina, Thurmaston, was awarded ÂŁ5,000 to help with a new marketing project

and to reach out to new volunteers. Mick Mcloughlin, chairman of trustees, said: “The Trust was established in 1983 and continues to deliver boat trips within the community which enhance the wellbeing of people of all ages. “We were delighted to find out we had been successful with our grant application. The funding has helped launch a new marketing campaign called Sailing into New Waters. The aim was to reach out to new partners and volunteers and raise awareness of the work the trust does. “We would recommend to any community groups or local charity in need of some extra funding to have a look at what funding is available through the Council. It’s easy to do and if you have any questions then the team are always willing to help.â€? The different grants are open to properly constituted community and voluntary groups for activities not conducted for profit. The grants include: Community Development and Engagement – Round 1 deadline April 17, 2020 This grant can provide up to ÂŁ10,000 for organisations currently running projects with community benefit in Charnwood. Community Facilities Grants and Feasibility Studies – Round 1 deadline April 17, 2020 The community facilities grants scheme can award funding of up to ÂŁ20,000, to a maximum of 50% of the cost of a project

CHARNWOOD PROBUS CLUB The club held its February meeting at our normal venue, Longcliffe Golf Club, on Thursday 20th February. After the normal pre-lunch conversations our taste buds were well satisfied with a very fine pate and garnishes for a starter. This was followed by a most tender braised steak and lots of vegetables just to be finished off by a club favourite Bread and Butter pudding served with custard. At this meeting we had a speaker, one of the club members, Ian Hamilton-Smith. The subject of Ian’s talk was a basic look at genealogy where he showed that the information derived from birth and marriage certificates is ample to start one off on what can become an extensive tree. Ian likes to do his talks in a light hearted way and used his grandad as the basis of the tree demonstration. He also included a few of facts about his family some sad, some intriguing and some just pure history.

which assists with the renovation and improvement of community buildings, and small-scale environmental improvement schemes. The feasibility studies grants scheme can award up to £5,000, to a maximum of 50% of the cost of feasibility studies as part of the development plan to undertake substantial refurbishment or propose a new-build community facility. Loughborough Community Grants – Round 1 deadline April 28, 2020 These grants can provide up to £2,000 for organisations and projects, which deliver activities with community benefits in Loughborough. Sports and Leisure Grants - Round 1 deadline April 28, 2020 A variety of grant funding for individuals, clubs and organisations in need of additional finance to run their projects and activities. Members Grants – Applications open on April 1,2020 These grants give each borough councillor the opportunity to award up to £1,000 to projects which bring benefits to their ward each year. The latest application forms, deadlines and more information are available at: www.charnwood.gov.uk/charnwoodgrants, email: grants@charnwood.gov.uk or call 01509 634730.

The title of Ian’s talk was Family Tree, Skeletons and Pitfalls and he certainly showed the skeletons that crept out and the pitfalls that one can fall into.

The talk was well received and generated a number of questions afterwards and hopefully at least one member will go home and start to build a Family Tree.

If any retired or semiretired gentleman would like to come along and see what we get up to with no commitment then just complete the “contact form on www.charnwoodprobus.co.uk where they will find lots of information on our very friendly club. We will need to know that you are coming so that we can include you in the lunch order. Can’t have a guest going hungry.
