Joe was 14 when he collapsed and died suddenly while out jogging near his Rothley home. He was a victim of SADS – sudden arrhythmic death syndrome – a heart condition which can strike anyone at any time, particularly otherwise fit and healthy young people.

Since Joe’s death, the JHMT continues to raise awareness of SADS and sudden heart deaths. The charity provides free CPR training, helps to fund community defibrillators and campaigns for better understanding of SADS. The JHMT also runs the Inspire Awards, a small grants scheme that helps inspire young people to fulfill their potential – something which the victims of SADS are cruelly denied.

Steve Humphries, chair of the JHMT, said: “This is another chance for more families to stride out together at JHMT’s annual fun run, which helps bring the community together in memory of Joe and helps to raise vital funds for JHMT's ongoing work to reduce the incidence of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) in young people.

Project Exhibition Launch Today in the Rothley Cemetery Chapel the Rothley Heritage Trust launched its new exhibition ‘Echoes from the Workhouse’, telling the story of the pauper experience in the Barrow upon Soar Poor Law Union. The Union Workhouse, opened in Rothley in 1840, became the Victorian solution to dealing with the problem of the poor right through to 1930. What was it like to be caught up in that system, and who were the people who had to rely upon an unpaid Board of Poor Law Guardians for their relief from want? Guests invited to the launch on 11th May were welcomed by costumed officials of the era, the Workhouse Master, the Matron, a female Pauper and the roving Relieving Officer. A group of volunteers had carefully researched and imagined what the poor law system was like, and briefed an illustrator who produced twenty stunning drawings of typical interactions in the system. They went on to uncover twenty real life stories of Victorian people who sought relief in the system, and the illustrator has drawn a poignant image of each person. To bring these images to life, another group of volunteers have recorded imagined voiceovers for each image, each one skillfully edited into a short video clip. The Exhibition features a new model of the now demolished Workhouse, built from see-through material to allow visitors to see how the classes and genders of inmates were kept apart. Surrounding the model is a lavishly illustrated 12-panel Diorama filling out the poor law story in the Barrow Union. To complete the displays is the interactive touch-screen monitor from which visitors can hear and see the video clips. It is all beautifully written up into a project book of 124 pages, which is on sale for £9. The Rothley Heritage Trust has been fortunate to have been awarded £30,600 by the Heritage Lottery Fund to finance the project. Other grants came from the Hames Cottages Charity and the Helen Cope Charity. The funding has enabled the use of a professional museum contractor, Vertigo Creative, to turn the Trust’s concepts into a splendid exhibition. The Exhibition is open for viewing on selected days, which feature in the advertisement above
Rothley Park Ladies Raise Over £6,000 For Eyes For Africa Every year Rothley Park Golf Club captains support a charity of their choice and raise funds via a host of golfing and social events. Last years Ladies Captain, Pippa Arkle, chose to support Eyes for Africa, a charity very close to her heart having lived in Kenya and seen first hand just how much this small but hugely effective charity helps. As an example, for just £60 someone with cataracts can have their sight restored and every penny raised for the charity goes directly on the patients and not on administration costs. “I was so pleased to be able to present a cheque for £6025 to fellow Rothley Park members George Walton and Jonathan Arkle. George has been on the board of trustees for Eyes for East Africa for many years, and Jonathan, my husband, who I met whilst working in Kenya, is the newest recruit, joining as Treasurer last year.
Jonathan Arkle, George Walton and 2017 Lady Captain Pippa Arkle
“Eyes for East Africa has said this is the largest sum of money ever raised in the UK for the Eye Centre, especially as the amount does not include the many generous 'standing order' donations received from members throughout the year, many of which, we are pleased to report, will continue.” Members of the club have also donated their old prescription glasses which are taken out to Kenya to be distributed by the Eye Centre, something again with which the members are keen to continue. Rothley Park Golf Club has one of the largest and most active ladies sections in the county and is also keen to promote its highly successful Golf Academy allowing non-members to receiving coaching and limited access to the course before committing to full membership. The club also has an excellent Junior Section, again with coaching provided by Club Professional Katie Tebbet. If you are interested in what the club has to offer please contact the Club Manager on 0116 230 2809 or e-mail clubmanager@rothleypark.co.uk or visit rothleypark.co.uk

Watermead Challenge Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance 2018 Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Westminster Law will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.
Wreake Valley and Syston Rotary Clubs are holding the eighth Watermead Challenge charity run at Watermead Country Park on Tuesday 3rd July 2018. The fairly flat three and five mile course around the park’s attractive lakes offers experienced and novice runners the opportunity to set a personal best time. Full details of how to enter can be found at www.wreakevalley rotary.org.uk. Race Chris Battye, Director commented: “last year we had nearly five hundred entries for this popular event. This year’s proceeds will be shared amongst three charities: Dementia UK, Leicestershire Childrens Holiday Centre and HCPT pilgrimage holidays. Venue restrictions mean numbers are limited to 500. Please enter early to avoid disappointment.

Information and advice on a range of age-related issues offered. We meet at the Tesco Community Room, Tesco Park Road, Loughborough on 2nd & 4th Thursday of the Month between 10am – 12noon. Free refreshments and a warm welcome awaits you.
The attached pages are from a programme showing the very interesting and imaginative titles of 72 paintings which were displayed at the ‘Old English Fair’ held on 21-23 June 1928. It was held at Birstall School, which is now the Village Hall. What became of the original pictures? Does anyone in Birstall have a piece of original work?
Jeanette Silver – 01509 260327
Mr John Kilby of the local Historical Society had the document amongst his vast array of local items of interest and passed it on to a member of the Birstall and District Art Society, Rita Cowham, as he thought it might be of interest to all members of BADAS.

With such interesting titles to the pieces originally shown, it conjured up a challenge. The challenge is that members paint/ draw/ sketch their own A4 versions of the titles. The work can be made using any materials to suit the artist. To reduce costs, the finished work will not be framed. All will be displayed at a Society event in the Village Hall on Saturday 23 June 2018, exactly 90 years after the original exhibition. The event will not be open to the public however, pictures will also be photographed and displayed on our website. www.badas.co.uk - The titles are to be ‘drawn out of a hat’, so that members have no choice of topic.

Results are in for this year's Largest Loser A woman from Loughborough has landed a 12-month membership at Fusion Lifestyle after winning this year’s Largest Loser competition. Donna Barnett, 50, along with 18 other participants, completed the Largest Loser programme run by Charnwood Borough Council’s Active Charnwood team. The 10-week programme saw 19 participants lose a combined 161lbs – more than 11 stone - and had an average body fat loss of 2.8 per cent each. Donna, who lost just under a stone and a half, said: “I’d like to thank the Active Charnwood team for putting together a fun and friendly Largest Loser programme. “I have always struggled to lose weight but going to Largest Loser has given me a real kick-start on my weight-loss journey. “The team are very supportive and above all positive. The workouts are great, motivating and make exercise fun.”
REVIVAL 2018
The Mountsorrel Community Team is pleased to announce that preparations for REVIVAL 2018 are well underway. Put the 12th August in your diary.
With the fond memories of last year’s Mountsorrel REVIVAL still vivid in our minds, preparations for the 2018 event is well underway. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better with a range of new attractions and activities being explored. The Mountsorrel Community Team, who organise the event, have promised to keep residents updated as the time flies by. Debbie MacRae, the Chair of MCT, told us: “We are all so excited to be putting on our fifth REVIVAL. It is always a great day and is the one day in the year when the whole community comes together. This year we will have the new Memorial Centre available to us and we have already many new and established attractions booked in”. Of course, the day itself is at the end of a very long process and the work behind the scenes carries on from one event to the next. One of the Teams concerns is always public safety and as the event gets bigger changes are needed to ensure that everyone who visits the village has a safe and happy time. For this reason, the Team has expanded the road closures this year to include the Green and Watling Street, giving greater freedom for people to move around safely. Specifically, the following Mountsorrel Roads will be closed for the REVIVAL 12th August 2018 from 10:30 to 17:00: • Sileby Road: will be closed from its junction with the Market Place to the bypass junction for the REVIVAL. Access to affected properties will still be possible. A Diversion will be signposted. •
Cllr Brian Page, lead member for communities, safety and wellbeing at the council, said: “I’d like to congratulate Donna and everyone else for taking part in this year’s Largest Loser programme and hope they feel better for completing it.”
Watling Street: From its junction with the Market Place for about 35 metres. Access to and from affected properties will be possible via the Navins and Crown Lane.
•
The Green: will be closed on both sides from its junctions with Leicester Road to the Navins. Access to affected properties will still be possible. A Diversion will be signposted.
The Largest Loser programme took place at Charnwood College and it runs every year. Nick Evatt, divisional sports & community development manager at Fusion said: “Firstly, massive congratulations to Donna and all of the other participants who took part in Largest Loser.
In addition, the main Leicester Road will be closed from 12:00 to 12:30 for safe passage of the Parade & Fun Run. The road will be closed from Bond Lane along the old A6 to the Green (at its junction with Leicester Rd). All these closures have been authorised by Leicestershire County Council.
“It is a fantastic programme that Active Charnwood have put together and Fusion are delighted that we can support the scheme.”
Debbie told us: ‘We feel these closures will add to the safety of the event and are a response to feedback we received last year. As usual we are looking for volunteers to help us with the day and we would be happy to hear from anyone who is interested.’

Latest News F Frrrom... om... Be Litter Litter Free F And Live A More Animal Friendly Lifestyle There has been a lot in the media in recent months regarding litter and, more e particularly particularly, the large quantities of plastics in our seas. Litter Lit ter of any sort sort is unsightly but it has now been acknowledged that it is dangerous, not only to us humans but to the wildlife and animals who share our world. Although this is an issue that should be solved with world governments working together, together, locally individuals can bring about greater and more immediate changes to their environment. If we all refrained from discarding unwanted items wherever we happen to be, then there would be a marked ed differ difference in our local environment. Now I’m not for one minute saying that anyone reading this article article is a lit litterer - but this litter comes from somewhere. I have never really wanted to get into the mind of people who treat our world with such indiffer indifference – that’s a dangerous place to go – but how can people simply thrown their litter where they are instead of taking it home to discard properly? Countywide campaign to stop fly-tipping
A new campaign to stop people illegally dumping their rubbish in Leicestershire has launched. The #IfOnly campaign has seen councils across the city and county join forces to warn people that they face tough action if they are caught fly-tipping. The consequences for their actions can range from a £400 fixed penalty notice to an unlimited fine, a criminal record or time in prison.

“People need to realise that if someone offers away to take your rubbish and then they dump it illegally, you could be the one who ends up in court and with a criminal record.” Blake Pain, county council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “I’m pleased that all of the Leicestershire councils are working together in partnership to tackle this issue.
