This Months PrioritiesSpeeding: We have received reports of vehicles speeding in a number of the villages. We patrol the roads regularly and have undertaken two speeding enforcement operations over the past month. Vehicle Crime: There have been a number of thefts from motor vehicles across Charnwood. In particularly those around the areas of Bradgate Park, we have also conducted an operation in Bradgate Park car parks to raise awareness on this. Antisocial Behaviour: Last month our priority was deal with complaints of ASB and use of cannabis on a road in Rothley. We are continuing to work with the local residents and housing association to resolve the situation..

Police Volunteers We have various volunteers which help us with tasks. These vary from doing reassurance visits to clerical work. You will see these volunteers around the beat, promoting Neighbourhood link, Rural Watch and Neighbourhood Watch. Volunteers are key part of policing and are extremely helpful in community work, they bring their own experiences which can be valuable. If you are interested in volunteering with the Police please visit our website for more details. We would also like to give our thanks to the

volunteers that are a part of the organisation. In particular, Eric Scoins and Pat Green have been providing a great deal of support around the Charnwood West villages.

Crime Prevention Advice Homes with no security measures in place are five times more likely to be burgled than those with simple security measures. Taking just a few steps can make a big difference in keeping your home safe from burglary. Here are a few tips:  Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you're just out in the garden, remembering to double-lock UPVC doors (lift handle and turn key)  Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and away from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through the letterbox)  Install a visual burglar alarm (as part of a suite of prevention measures - a burglar alarm on its own will not prevent entry to your home)  Install good outside lighting  Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property  Leave radios or lights in your house on a timer to make the property appear occupied

* * -

37,850

 Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property  Ensure rear fencing is in good repair  Improve natural surveillance at the front of your property i.e. trim high hedges  Mark your property with postcode and house number and register your property for free with Immobilise  Consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch scheme  Remove valuables from view of ground floor windows  Store any high value items (i.e. jewellery, passports) in a properly secured safe or bank vault

Considering getting away for a late holiday? To reduce the risk of being burgled while you’re away make your home look like someone is living in it:  Use automatic timer-switches to turn your lights and radios on when it goes dark  Cancel any newspaper or milk deliveries  Use the Royal Mail's 'keepsafe' service they keep your mail for up to 2 months while you're away. Mail sitting on your doorstep is a sign that you are away  Trusted neighbours may be able to help you by collecting your post, opening and closing curtains and they could park their car on your driveway  Avoid discussing holiday plans on public social networking sites - burglars can use any information you post on there to their advantage

Recycling simplified across Leicestershire District councils in Leicestershire have joined forces to make recycling easier than ever by providing a more consistent recycling service for Leicestershire residents. The majority of county residents are now able to recycle exactly the same materials in their recycling wheelie bins wherever they live in the county. Six district councils have worked together to produce one simple list of what can and cannot be put into the recycling bin. It is hoped that not only will this offer better consistency for residents countywide, but that it will also encourage residents to recycle more things, more often. A complete list of items that can be recycled can be seen at: www.lesswaste.org.uk/items-accepted-for-recycling-at-casepak/ Until recently, when recycling bins were emptied by crews in each council area, the contents were taken to several different recycling sites for sorting. Each recycling site had different rules and different processes which meant items that could be recycled in some districts could not be recycled in others. That changed last year and now recycling collections from most districts - Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley & Bosworth, Melton and Oadby & Wigston are now taken to a single materials recycling facility in Leicester which has enabled the councils to team up for the first time. Up to date information on what the recycling is used for is also available at www.lesswaste.org.uk Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member for major contracts at Charnwood Borough Council said: “It’s important we make recycling as easy as possible to ensure residents in Charnwood can recycle as much as possible. “I’m pleased we’ve been able to work with other district councils in Leicestershire to produce a single list and hope residents will take time to look at the list of what can be put in their green recycling bin.” Beverley Jolly, joint chief executive of Harborough District Council and Leicestershire districts’ lead on waste said: "It's been a source of some frustration to Leicestershire residents for some time that items that can be recycled by some councils cannot be recycled by others. "It's also an issue that WRAP, the national waste and resources action programme, is keen to tackle as their research says that inconsistency leads to confusion and puts people off recycling so we were keen to work together to produce a single list for recycling that applies countywide. "We really hope this will make recycling easier than ever for Leicestershire residents, leading to more recycling and less waste going to landfill.”

Local author Kerry Young visits Rothley Community Library Pao, Kerry Young's mesmerising first novel, celebrates Jamaica's ethnic melting pot, and the lost world of Kingston's Chinatown. There’s a great opportunity to hear Kerry talk about her work and ask her questions: she has generously agreed to come and talk with us on Wednesday, 9th October from 7-8.30. You’re asked to read Pao, and if possible Gloria and Show me a Mountain, which together make up her trilogy set in Kingston, Jamaica. ‘Young’s prose perfectly captures the lilting, multilingual rhythm of Jamaica and strengthens her character’s profound humanity as they sin, struggle and triumph. Pao is a coming-of-age story of both its title character and the country in which he lives, an evocative portrait of political change and personal transformation.’ - San Francisco Book Review

Mountsorrel Townswomen’s Guild The ladies from Mountsorrel Townswomen’s Guild were delighted to take part in the village Revival held on 11th August 2019. We had a wonderful day and would like to thank all the local businesses and individuals who provided us with excellent prizes for the raffle and book stall we had on the Green. It was very well supported and we managed to raise almost £300 which will be split between the Guild and the two doctors’ surgeries in Mountsorrel. We also came second in the Parade ‘An Explosion of Colour’ competition. The Townswomen’s Guild has been active in the village since 1945 and our meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Rooms, Little Lane, Mountsorrel. So ladies, do come along and join us for interesting talks, fun evenings, outings and friendship. You are assured of a very warm welcome.

Rothley Vineyard gains an impressive medal haul after a mention on National TV Two wines grown in Rothley were praised on national television on the BBC1 Saturday Kitchen programme by renowned chef Marianne Lumb on 10th August 2019. She had mentioned the Sparkling wines and the elderflower wine. The good news then gathered momentum. A week later at the Regional Wine Competition, this boutique wine estate scooped 8 medals. SUPPORTING LOROS

Liz Robson, vineyard proprietor at Rothley Wine Estate, said “I am so pleased. All the hard work has been recognised, and none of this would have been possible without the help of our remarkable band of volunteers. No gold medals were awarded at all at the competition, which indicates that a silver medal is a noble accolade indeed. King Richard attained a silver thus beating King Henry who got a bronze. Now this might upset the history books a bit! Liz went on to say “The 4 awards achieved at the national competitions earlier in the year had identical awards in this regional competition, which I feel shows the stringency and reliability of the judging. “

Changes to bulky waste service confirmed

Leicester Branch of Cancer Research UK are holding their annual Coffee Morning and Christmas Sale

Changes to Charnwood Borough Council’s bulky waste collection service have been approved. The Council is one of only a handful of authorities in England to currently offer a free collection for some bulky items from people’s doorsteps.

at The Rothley Centre, Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley on Saturday November 19th 2019 from 10am to 12 noon.

Currently, Charnwood residents can request from the Council three free bulky waste collections each year and only face a charge after exceeding that amount.

Stalls will include Cakes * Books * Bric a Brac * Gifts * Plants * New Toys * Handicrafts * Phoenix Cards * Tombola and Raffle. Entrance will be £1 to include Coffee/Tea and biscuits. Everyone is welcome – all money raised will be used locally in research at Leicester University/Hospitals.

THE OCTOBER MAGAZINE OUT 21st OCTOBER

George Hythe House

However, the Council’s Cabinet has agreed to introduce a ÂŁ20 charge for each collection for up to three items. Officers will also consider an exemption scheme for people experiencing exceptional hardship. The Council will review the changes after six months and ensure promotion of alternative methods of collection to residents. Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member for major contracts at the Council, said: “We must ensure we are operating as efficiently as possible and that means looking at alternative ways of funding services. “The changes will help ensure we can maintain a high-quality, frontline service.â€? Cabinet approved the changes at a meeting on July 4. The current bulky waste service costs around ÂŁ105,000 to operate and introducing the charge is expected to generate around ÂŁ60,000 a year. Community groups urged to contact local councillors about grant funding Community groups in Charnwood are being urged to contact their local councillor to help them access grant funding for projects. The member grants scheme is run by Charnwood Borough Council and enables each borough councillor to award up to £1,000 to projects in their ward each year. Cllr Jonathan Morgan, leader of the Council said: “The member grants scheme helps spread funding to projects right across Charnwood, in each ward. “We want to encourage groups who are making a positive contribution to their community to contact their local councillor about the grants.” The Forest Road Greenbelt Gardeners has been awarded a total of £750 from three different councillors. The funding has been used towards carving a story telling seat from a dead standing oak tree in Forest Road. The seat has been created in memory of Loughborough in Bloom stalwart Harry Cook. Cllr Richard Bailey, who represents the Outwoods ward and awarded £250 to the project said “The Forest Road Greenbelt Gardeners help to maintain a wonderful green space in my ward which I know is appreciated by many residents. “Harry Cook was well thought of in the local community and I was happy to support this project with part of my grant to create a lasting feature on the greenbelt in Harry’s memory. “The member grants scheme is a fantastic opportunity for councillors to find out more about the work community groups do in the local area and support them by awarding them with some funding.” Harry’s widow Pat said: “The story telling seat was always one of Harry’s dreams. I’m pleased we’ve been able to make it happen with the help of the member grants scheme. “I was so overwhelmed by the support of the local community, schools, local business’ and Charnwood Borough Council. A total of £8,436 was raised through the Spacehive crowd funding platform in conjunction with the idverde community investment fund for the project.

New Dementia support group is launched at Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation Earlier this year registered charity Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation launched a new dementia support group for behaviours that challenge. Helen Baxter Activities Coordinator at the Foundation said ‘changes in behaviour can be one of the most difficult aspects of living with dementia, both for the person with the condition and those around them’ She added ‘Challenging behaviours usually happen when a person is feeling confused or distressed and trying to make sense of what is happening around them – our new support group aims to offer individually tailored activities for people living with dementia together with their partners, friends or carers’ The group will meet on the third Thursday of the month - 1.30pm-3.00pm at Ulverscroft Activity Centre. The new social group is for people under 75 years of age living with dementia with behaviours that challenge, together with their partners, friends or carers. For more information regarding the sessions please telephone Kathleen Wass on 07860 639693

In Praise of Grandparents! SUNDAY 6TH OCTOBER is ‘Grandparents Day’. Grandparents in the UK number about 17 million, or more than one in four of the adult population. Grandparents average out at 68 years of age, have four grandchildren who live 10 miles away, and who spend five hours per visit. Grandparents have multiple roles as their grandchildren grow up: playmates, teachers, confidants, spiritual guides, mentors, role models and nurturers, as well as pray-ers. They also can keep children’s milestones, family history and family events alive. Grandchildren will often discuss their personal concerns with a trusted grandparent. Grandparents are also important for the UK economy! Nine million of them looked after their grandchildren in 2017. On average they did so for 8 hours a week, 96% received no payment.

Charnwood Voices Autumn Concert – Light Fantastic! This concert promises something for everyone. Charnwood Voices have been busy rehearsing the wide and varied programme that will be on offer on Saturday 12th October in St Andrew's Church, Kegworth and are really looking forward to what should be a musical feast for you all to enjoy.

The Charnwood Gardener It Ain’t Over Yet

There is a distinct moment, sometime in mid-September, when the realisation hits that autumn is almost upon us. Perhaps it’s the quality of the light: the bright white of summer cooling to a subdued golden hue. Or maybe it’s the sudden desire to dig out the chunkier jumpers from the back of the wardrobe. Or the startling and perverse sight of Christmas tat already in the shops. Depending on your disposition, these signs of the season may be cause for melancholy (where did the summer go?) or celebration (bonfires and muddy walks!), but if you’re a gardener you’ll know that the fun is far from over.

Come along to revel in a mix of sacred and secular music from Plainsong to Cole Porter, Rheinberger to Over the Rainbow and the beautiful Lux Aeterna by Morten Lauridsen. The choir will be conducted by Musical Director, Nicholas Scott-Burt. You are promised a night of 'harmonic luminescence' so don't hesitate – get your tickets NOW. Tickets will be available on the door but we recommend you buy them early from choir members or request them via an email to tickets@charnwoodvoices.org.uk. The price of £10 includes a glass of wine or fruit juice and if you have any U16s in the family they will be welcome for free!

Our bankrupt young THE NUMBER of young people who go bankrupt has soared, increasing tenfold in just three years. People from ‘Generation Z’ (aged 18 to 25) now make up one in 15 of all personal insolvencies. Back in 2016 only one in 100 insolvencies involved a young person. As one accountant explained: “In this climate of low interest rates and relatively easy access to credit, young people without financial experience may be more susceptible to the temptations of easy money.” The rise of the gig economy and zero-hours contracts have also played a big role, for without a regular income, young people find it much more difficult to budget.

Kale is hardy enough to over-winter

Autumn is a magical window in which to plot, plan and play – the garden becomes the alchemist’s crucible from which the old becomes the new. Here’s some inspiration for this enchanting time of year: • It’s an ideal time to lift and divide herbaceous plants. Is that clump of globe thistles (Echinops) getting too big for its boots? Turn one plant into three and add some visually-pleasing repetition to the border. • Don’t let the veg patch sit there doing nothing all winter. The soil is still warm and hardy veg like kale, chard and purple-sprouting broccoli will get going in no time. Sow direct and fill the space! • As you start to cut back in the borders, think about winter structure. Could you leave some of the sturdier growth until spring? Fennel, teasel, Phlomis, Verbena – the seed heads of these all look beautiful touched with winter frost and stop the garden being entirely flat for four months of the year. OCTOBER TIP: With the ground nice and moist, now’s a good time to re-edge the borders. Using a decent half-moon edging spade, carefully cut tidy lines (or curves) into the lawn and lift (from the border side) with a fork. Done well it transforms the appearance of the garden.

Charnwood Museum rides high on Visit Britain survey Charnwood Museum is one of the most visited free attractions in the East Midlands according to Visit Britain. The museum in Loughborough, run by Charnwood Borough Council, was the 11th most popular free attraction in 2018 with nearly 45,000 visitors. Cllr Jenny Bokor, the council’s lead member for Loughborough, said: “It is fantastic to see that Charnwood Museum continues to punch above its weight when it comes to delivering fantastic exhibitions, events and talks to the local community. “The museum is a great place to visit for all the family and is situated in the award-winning Queens Park along with the Carillon. Congratulations to the team for all their hard work and efforts to make the museum such an enjoyable place to visit across Loughborough, Charnwood and the East Midlands as a whole.” The museum has an excellent record of working with schools and the local community, which resulted in them winning the community engagement award at the NUS National Green Impact Awards last year. The award recognised teams who have engaged people in activities focussed around sustainability. While the museum is owned and operated by the borough Council, the exhibits are provided by Leicestershire County Council. Visit Britain is the national tourism agency that aims to build the countries tourism product and raise Britain’s profile worldwide. Each year, they invite visitor attractions nationwide to take part in an annual survey, recording visitor numbers alongside key information like entrance fees and visitor profiles. The full top 20 for both free and paid attractions in the East Midlands can be found on the Visit Britain website: www.visitbritain.org/annualsurvey-visits-visitor-attractions-latest-results. Charnwood Museum is located in Queen’s Park, Loughborough. For information about the museum opening times and events visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/charnwood_ museum.

Inspiring young people make a global difference with the help of JHMT INSPIRING young people who want to take their talents worldwide have been awarded grants from the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT). Dev Sharma, Mae Holmes, Alejandro Argüelles Bullón, Lucy Whitaker and Millie O’Connell have all received grants from the local charity to help them fulfil their ambitions and share their skills with others. The JHMT was set up in memory of Leicester teenager Joe Humphries, who collapsed and died in October 2012 while out jogging near his family home in Rothley, Leicestershire. Joe was a victim of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) – a group of lethal heart diseases which can cause sudden cardiac death in young people. The JHMT provides free CPR training, helps to fund community defibrillators and campaigns for better understanding of SADS. JHMT Inspire Awards of up to £500 are handed out to young people aged 13-21 from Leicester and Leicestershire to help them fulfill their ambitions in the fields of music, arts, sports, entrepreneurism and community endeavour. Since the awards’ inception in 2014, more than £30,000 has been awarded to help 160 young people to do some amazing things. Dev Sharma, 14, from Thurmaston, has been awarded £350 to take part in a four-week educational expedition to Botswana and Zambia next summer. He’ll be working alongside local people to renovate a school. Dev, who is also a member of Leicester Young People’s Council, has to raise £3,500 for the trip. He said: “This grant has been a great help. My passion is making a positive difference to communities and now I am able to pursue it.” Mae Holmes, a sport and exercise science student, is one of three students from Loughborough University to receive an Inspire Award for their participation in the Volunteer Zambia 2019 programme. Mae, who has a £200 grant, said: “We’ll be coaching netball to communities and schools in Zambia, bringing our sporting knowledge and sharing our passion for the sport. I just want to say a huge thank-you to JHMT for supporting me.” Spanish student Alejandro Argüelles Bullón is studying sport and exercise psychology at Loughborough, and has been given a £200 grant to help him teach sport as a life skill in Zambia. Fellow student Lucy Whitaker, 17, will be helping to deliver the coaching too, focusing on netball. She too has been awarded a £200 Inspire grant. Sixteen-year-old Millie O’Connell, from Loughborough, has been awarded £300 towards her charity expedition to Sumatra next year. Millie will be re-planting parts of the rainforest that have been destroyed by palm oil farming, to help protect the endangered Sumatran orangutan species.

GOT AN ARTICLE TO SEND US?

“There are currently fewer than 15,000 orangutans surviving in the wild due to habitat loss and poaching,” says Millie. “I hope my expedition will be a step in the right direction towards improving these shocking figures.”

We are always on the lookout for local news. Please send articles to: yourlocal@ openboxpromotions.co.uk

“Coaching, developing and inspiring other young people is at the heart of what the Inspire Awards are about and we are delighted to support these five dedicated and motivated young people.”

Simon Taylor, Inspire Award lead, said: “These five are a great example to other young people and to all of us. They demonstrate an admirable and truly inspiring commitment to other people’s lives. In short, they care!

NOT LONG The MMC and Live & Local – LEFT FOR A Perfect Partnership BARGAIN WILL WRITING With the Campaign ending next month, the ‘phone lines at Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland are buzzing, with hundreds of older people wanting to make sure that they do not miss out on the annual Will Writing Promotion organised by the Charity. Twenty-seven offices of local solicitors have kindly agreed to reduce their Will Writing charge to just £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will, but the offer runs only until the end of October. This price represents a saving of more than £100 in most cases. Commenting, the Business Development Manager of the local Age UK, Peter Ralphs, said: “We are delighted that so many people have responded to the promotion. Many older people have never been to a solicitor before, with some feeling intimidated at the prospect. The special offer has acted as an incentive and given many people the confidence they have needed to put their affairs in order – ensuring that those who will benefit from their estate are the people they most care for. Some have even been kind enough to include much-needed legacies or given donations to our charity, though there is no pressure so to do.” Anyone wishing to take advantage of the Will Writing Promotion should contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland to find out the names of the Solicitors participating in the scheme in their local area on 0116 2992233.

The MMC are delighted to be working together with Live & Local Ltd to bring two fantastic new theatre shows to the Mountsorrel Memorial Centre during October.

Live & Local Ltd is a not-for-profit arts organisation working with a network of voluntary groups across Leicestershire and other counties. They provide a range of support for arts activities that keep people in touch with their communities and enhance their quality of life. They are supported and funded by, amongst others, Arts Council, England and the National Lottery. On Thursday 3rd October 2019 Anonymous Is A Woman Theatre Co. bring their wittily romantic production ‘It Is Now’ to The MMC. Imagine every wedding you've ever been to; the frantic mother of the bride, the one relative who's had a little too much to drink… only this time it's the day of the 1966 World Cup, and everyone has an ear to the radio while no one keeps an eye on the groom and his bride's best friend. Chaos ensues! This rising star theatre company draws you into the centre of their brilliant new show and welcomes you in as an actual wedding guest. A charming, funny, gently immersive night of theatre, with superb period details and some great swinging 60s music, from Dusty Springfield and The Supremes, to The Beach Boys and The Beatles. If you’re looking for some half term entertainment for your youngsters? On Friday 18th October the Lempen Puppet Theatre Co. bring their spellbinding production ‘Little Frankenstein’ to The MMC. Puppet master Frank Stein is rehearsing his new show George the Dragon Slayer, but his badly made puppets keep falling apart. Inspired by his infamous relative Dr Frankenstein, and with the help of the audience, he creates a real living, breathing puppet to do a better job for him. 'Creature George' emerges from the workshop innocent and willing to learn, but Frank is so intent on the planned rehearsal that he neglects to look after his new child. Interpreting Mary Shelley's Frankenstein for children and families, this enjoyable bonkers 'gentle little horror for little horrors' deals with the idea of the role of the creator or parent, and the question of life itself. Tickets for both of these shows can be purchased through The MMC website www.mountsorrelmemorialcentre.co.uk, by calling the Box Office on 0116 230 4877 or by popping in to The MMC at 105 Leicester Road, Mountsorrel, LE12 7DB
