CREATION OFFICIALLY PREDATOR FRIENDLY

In support of the Landmark Foundation, with whom we have recently become associated, Creation Wines announce that we are now proudly predator friendly. The Landmark Foundation is a not for profit organisation which strives to build the conservation economy of South Africa. It is currently running a number of projects aimed at providing research that will create incentives to invest in the long term conservation infrastructure of the country, changing thinking and behaviour towards the issue of conservation. Following the recent confirmed sighting of a male leopard just 500 m from Creation’s Tasting Room by a motion sensitive night-vision camera, and Landmark Foundation ranger Bruce Missing searching the area for a female with a cub, they now have our full support. Here is an extract from their website: “Research Results: Leopards in the Cape “The research has a broad focus, investigating the landscape ecology and management of leopards within and outside of protected areas of the Eastern and Western Cape. The study area makes up a massive area of 4,5 million hectares, stretching from Addo in the east to Gordon’s Bay in the west. “Leopards have been collared in the Greater Addo Elephant National Park, Baviaanskloof, Garden Route, the Langkloof, The Langeberg, the Overberg, Hex River Valley and De Hoop since 2007 allowing us a great deal of insight into best understanding their spatial requirements (their territories and social dynamics), habitat selection and avoidances, genetic vigour, population densities, hunting activity and management. This is particularly important in areas outside of protected land. To date 22 leopards have been monitored and their movement and biology studied within different landscapes. On average adult females weigh 22 kg, and males 42 kg, half that of their counterparts in the northern areas of South Africa.” Join us on 22 April 2014 to celebrate World Earth Day with Jeannine McManus, Researcher and Field Worker from the Landmark Foundation. World Earth Day is observed across 190 countries by over 1 billion people and motivates communities to focus on environmental issues that affect them. Jeannine will be giving a talk entitled: ‘Leopards, People and Everything’ which will focus on the interaction between the three main factors that influence their projects – how each contribute to the challenges we face and how each can contribute to the solution. Jeannine is a PhD student at Wits who is doing her research on broad leopard conservation, from the impact of land use and genetics to habitat corridors and the conservation economy. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to salome@creationwines.com or 028 212 1107 before Monday 21 April 17H00. CATERING FOR ALL CREATURES, GREAT AND SMALL In addition to vegetarian and gluten-free options on our award-winning Wine and Food Pairing menu, we at Creation are excited to announce that we now also cater for those on a Low Carb High Fat diet. The Low Carb High Fat (LCHF) diet originated in the mid-19th century, popularised by royal undertaker and notorious epicurean William Banting. The diet was originally devised by William Harvey, a well-known English doctor of the time, who had studied under the French diabetic specialist Claude Bernard. The diet was based on limiting the intake of refined and easily digestible carbohydrates. The principle of LCHF diets has been vilified by many, but notable exponent Prof. Tim Noakes has pointed out that this is not for everyone - its efficacy is particular to carbohydrate-resistant people. Perhaps the most notable modern eating plan based on this theory is the Atkins diet, which is internationally acclaimed. So … whether you’re a vegetarian, gluten-intolerant or carbohydrate-resistant: you can now enjoy the full Wine and Food Pairing experience at Creation without having to compromise! In fact, our latest menu even includes a young adults pairing option offering the young ones the opportunity of experimenting with the tastes and textures of five different dishes and three complementing drinks. THE IMPACT OF OAK DURING WINEMAKING Over the past two weeks (as the grapes were harvested) we focussed on Creation’s Syrah – in the vineyard and also in the cellar. This week, as the young wine is transferred into oak barrels for maturation, we look at the impact of oak on the wine. Hermanus FynArts 2014 6 – 16 June From Soweto to Manchester Among the highlights at Hermanus FynArts 2014 will be the performance of the very talented cellist Abel Selaocoe (22). Debuting in 2013, Hermanus FynArts this year offers a bigger, and an even better, programme over ten days, starting on 6 June. Selaocoe was born in Sebokeng, a township near Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg, and now studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, under Professor Hannah Roberts, the principal cellist of Manchester Camerata. Mary Faure, founder of Hermanus FynArts and also chairperson of Hermanus Tourism, considers the performance of Selaocoe, accompanied by the well-known pianist Jose Dias as a scoop for Hermanus FynArts. Selaocoe will also perform as soloist for the closing matinee concert in celebration of Youth Day (16 June) with the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, ¨We are indebted to the owners of Sumaridge wine farm for making these concerts possible by funding his travelling expenses. We are thrilled to showcase this young, talented South African cellist who has made the journey from Sebokeng to the UK. The Youth Orchestra is looking forward to play the final concert on Youth Day with him΅ she says. When he was 11 years old, Selaocoe started taking cello lessons in Soweto with Kutlwano Masote as his first teacher. Over the following 11 years his achievements include several scholarships, prizes and awards and solo performances in a number of countries. Selaocoe is also a keen improviser playing in a folk band named Project Jam Sandwich around the UK at various folk festivals. Other scoops on the FynArts 2014 programme include Classical Marimba and Voice with Magdalena (De Vries) and Magdalene (Minnaar); Bovim Ballet; Kyle Shepherd, The 2014 Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz; the Western Cape Field Band; Richard Cock with Lloyd Webber and Friends, a selected and curated exhibition open to all Cape Whale Coast Artists; and the Tollman Bouchard Finlayson Art Competition with a first prize of R30 000. “Including events around The Art of Fine Dining, this is only a small taste of more than 100 items on the FynArts 2014 eclectic programme that caters for a wide array of interests. We are looking forward to staging an event that is moving onward and upward; bigger and better”, Mary concluded. This year's unique art experience in Hermanus spotlights South African visual arts, music, literature, award-winning wines and fine food. Exhibitions of ceramics, paintings, sculpture, glassware and jewelry will be seen in galleries, hotels and special venues in the town centre as well as in tasting rooms and wine farms along the wine route. There will be readings and talks; concerts and recitals; workshops and demonstrations and a wine route shuttle for visitors between the exhibitions and wine tastings at participating wine farms. Hermanus FynArts runs until 16 June and tickets will be on sale from early April. THE GREYTON GENADENDAL CLASSICS FOR ALL FESTIVAL, 29 MAY – 1 JUNE The Greyton Genadendal Classics for All Festival takes place from 29 May to 1 June. Eleven concerts will be performed in the historic churches of Greyton and Genadendal, as well as in smaller venues in these two neighbouring villages. The focus of the festival is on classical music concerts, but there will also be art exhibitions, wine tastings, and various food events. The festival line-up includes an “alla breve” production of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni with guest sopranos Violine Anguelov and Beverley Chiat, the woodwind quintet Appasionato, the Cantique Chamber Ensemble and the guitar duo of James Grace and Chloe Murphy. Classics for All identifies young up-and-coming-artists who would be the face of classical music in the future to perform in a concert called “The Next generation”. This year exciting violinist Anele Mhlahlo can be seen performing with Axolile Hosa, a young flutist who matriculated at the Overberg High School in neighbouring Caledon, and local pianist Philippus Hugo. For the first time overseas artists will be part of the festival. The German brass ensemble, Harmonic Brass Munich will perform a special concert “Concerto Festivo”, followed by a workshop for brass instrumentalists in the Overberg region. This concert and workshop are of special significance because brass music in Genadendal dates back to 1838 when young people were trained to play brass instruments at the Genadendal Training School. Under the oak trees on the Genadendal Church Square the brass instrumentalists usually formed a semicircle and performed heart-warming hymns of praise in order to welcome the visitors attending solemn occasions. On New Year's Day, the Queen's birthday and other festive days the band members gathered on the adjoining hill at the crack of dawn to render the songs of praise so that the townspeople could rise and shine in a merry mood. The march to the graveyard on Easter Sunday morning without the brass band was unthinkable. Today still the Genadendal Brass Band forms an integral part of the cultural life of the inhabitants of Genadendal. Other highlights include the ATKV gala event, featuring soprano Caroline Modiba, tenor Louis Loock and violinist Zanta Hofmeyr performing with the Greyton Genadendal Community Choir, and performances by the Stellenberg Girls' Choir under the baton of Andre van der Merwe as well as popular pianist Charl du Plessis and his Trio. The choir of the Greyton Primary School will be performing with well-known cabaret artists Emile Minnie and Godfrey Johnson in a program designed for audience participation. Minnie and Johnson will also do a late-night show called Comedy Classics, poking fun at the sacred cows in classical music. Various restaurants will be offering live light classical music with their meals, and wines of the region will be available for tasting throughout the village. Artists in Greyton and Genadendal have also been invited to showcase their talents at exhibitions in both villages. For more information contact Greyton Tourism at 028 254 9414, or visit www.classicsforall.co.za. Tickets available from Computicket.

Our Paleo lifestyle journey has been filled with the most amazing food from various sources. The ease at which I have been able to maintain the lifestyle and achieve the success I have so far is all to do with the food. I as a diabetic have tried unsuccessfully to get my daily sugar readings under control following traditional Diabetic diets, some of which were recommended by professionals both medical and nutritionists. They just did not work and I was pumping more and more insulin every 6 months after each check up. I year later on Paleo I am insulin free, still on oral meds but that will change. My health has never been better and to crown it all I am down 28 kilos. Read my full story on our website Click paleoliving.co.za Food recipes from 4 fantastic bloggers follow on the next pages.
