RHÔNE CULTIVARS PROSPER AT CREATION.

Confit Duck Leg, Jerusalem Artichoke Purée, Beetroot Chutney, Carrot Coins and Truffle Oil served with the Creation Syrah Grenache 2013 - a sublime flavour No doubt about it: Creation’s long dry summers coupled with the influence of the cool breezes blowing in from the nearby ocean make it ideal for the cultivation of Rhône cultivars. Add to this our cellarmaster Jean-Claude Martin’s vast experience and meticulous attention to detail and it’s not surprising that our unique, terroir-driven Rhône-style wines are causing quite a stir, locally as well as internationally. To order the latest vintages of these wines, click here. Three Rhône varietals are cultivated at Creation: Viognier, Syrah and Grenache. And you only have to browse through our latest accolades to appreciate the success. The Creation Viognier 2013 was chosen for the FAIRLADY Consumer Awards 2013 (Best Viognier Category), was awarded the Grand Gold at the 2014 South African Wine Index (SAWi) Awards, and was allocated 91 points by Tim Atkin, British Master of Wine and international wine judge. In the same report Tim Atkin awarded the 2012 Creation Syrah 93 points! Which brings us to our ‘wine for July’, the Creation Syrah Grenache. Apart from being judged a 91 point wine by Tim Atkin, this beautiful Rhône-style blend recently received a Platinum Award at the 2014 South African Wine Index (SAWi) Awards. The 2013 vintage adapts seamlessly to a range of cuisines, including Creation chef Warwick Taylor’s terrific Impala and Shiitake Pie with King Oyster Mushroom and Mountain Cheese Potato Gratin. Click here for the recipe. Reflecting on this magnificent match, Creation’s pairing guru, Carolyn Martin, points out how the wealth of umami flavours present in the wine echo the savoury meatiness from the venison and mushrooms in the dish. “What’s more, the fresh natural acidity of the wine cuts through the richness of the dish while the delicate fruit and floral notes of the wine enhance the earthier tones of the venison and the Hemel-en-Aarde sourced shiitake mushrooms,” Carolyn adds. “When it comes to the King Oyster Mushroom and Mountain Cheese Gratin, the umami flavours in the wine are complementary to the mushrooms and cheese while the freshness of the wine cuts through the richness of the gratin, creating a perfect balance.” AN EVENING WITH CAROLYN AND JEAN-CLAUDE MARTIN OF CREATION WINES Date: Thursday, 21 August 2014 Venue: The Plantation Room, Beverly Hills Hotel, Durban Time: 19h00 for 19h30 Cost: R425 per person You’re invited to join Executive Chef, Tony Kocke, and his dynamic culinary team along with Carolyn Martin for what promises to be an exceptional dinner paired with wines from Creation on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge near Hermanus. The evening commences at 19h00 with a glass of Creation Sauvignon Blanc served on the terrace before adjourning to the Plantation Room for dinner. Followers of good food and fine wine are in for a treat. Booking Essential. Contact Firdos on 031 561 2211 or fridos.mahomed@tsogosun.com. We look forward to seeing you!

TULBAGH ARTS FESTIVAL, 12 – 14 SEPTEMBER 2014

South Africa's 3rd oldest town celebrates the arrival of the warmer season and all things cultural with its annual Tulbagh Arts Festival, a three-day affair that runs from Friday, 12 September to Sunday, 14 September 2014. Now in its fourth year, the extravaganza, which coincides with the spectacular blooming of spring flowers in the area, features a stellar line-up of art exhibitions, classical music, book reviews, architectural lectures and walkabouts, theatre productions as well as food events and wine tastings. The little town of Tulbagh (about an hour and a half's drive from Cape Town) may be more popular for its wine farms than anything else, but it has its fair share of fine art and culture and talented locals too. The festival offers an assortment of free and ticketed events happening in and around the Cape Winelands village including the premiere of a musical collaboration between blues artist Albert Frost and mezzo-soprano Minette du Toit-Pearce, a performance of Mozart's Requiem by the Canticum Novum Choir and the University of Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra, a piano extravaganza with four esteemed pianists Tertia Visser-Downie, Francois du Toit, Albie van Schalkwyk and Franklin Leary in a production called “Two Pianos, Eight Hands”, and others. What's more, fans of South African food literature can attend book reviews by authors such as Niel Stemmet and Riana Scheepers and sample heritage food prepared from their books. Theatre productions include “From the Heart of Oom Schalk” with actor David Muller telling some of Herman Charles Bosman's best stories and “Voorskoot and Lipstiek”, with foodies Herman Lensing and Marinda Engelbrecht. The festival coincides with the re-launch of the Christo Coetzee Gallery, which features an exhibition of classic Christo Coetzee works from private collections, as well as Homage paintings, collages and assemblages by artists such as Erika Prinsloo, Debbie de Beer, Fawa Conradie, Alexander Laurean, Susan Smuts, Jan Wolmarans and others. Other artists exhibiting at various venues in the village include featured festival artist Tina Nel, local artists Vasek Matousek and Rochelle Beresford, Jan Visser and Aleta Michaletos, as well as an exhibition of Lize Beekman's Mandalas. The Tulbagh Arts Festival will also have crafts and food markets open all day where families and art lovers can pick up snacks and souvenirs as they soak up the spectacular mountain views and scents of wildflowers; plus, farms surrounding the town welcome guests for wine and bubbly tastings, live music, art events and food stalls. Tickets for the 2014 Tulbagh Arts Festival are available from Computicket – please note that there will also be a satellite Computicket outlet at the Tulbagh Tourism Office in Church Street. Visit www.tulbaghartsfestival.co.za for programme details, or contact Tulbagh Tourism on 023 230 1348.

Our Paleo lifestyle journey has been filled with the most amazing food from various sources. The ease at which I have been able to maintain the lifestyle and achieve the success I have so far is all to do with the food. I as a diabetic have tried unsuccessfully to get my daily sugar readings under control following traditional Diabetic diets, some of which were recommended by professionals both medical and nutritionists. They just did not work and I was pumping more and more insulin every 6 months after each check up. I year later on Paleo I am insulin free, still on oral meds but that will change. My health has never been better and to crown it all I am down 28 kilos. Read my full story on our website Click paleoliving.co.za Food recipes from 4 fantastic bloggers follow on the next pages. Today, my aim is to make things a little easier for those who are embarking on the real foods paths. I want to help families who live with intolerances and allergies. I want to put fun and simplicity into what can sometimes be a daunting and dull experience. Ultimately, I want to create food that is enjoyed by all.
