Mama to one handsome little newborn boy, blogger and qualified nutritionist, Rebecca Gawthorne, is an accredited Practising Dietitian, Accredited Nutritionist and a member of the Dietitians Association of Australia. Her love of food has seen her study nutrition, publish research on health, and help thousands of clients with their eating. And her message is strong as she focuses on how important healthy, nourishing food is to our bodies, and in our case, especially for mamas. Bec spoke with our Editor Chanelle, and she shares her story with us... words by CHANELLE HESH photographs supplied by REBECCA GAWTHORNE
Where did it all begin for you and nutrition?
I always wanted to work in an industry that helped people. Initially I thought I wanted to be a physio or psychologist, however when I studied food tech at school, I discovered that I loved learning about health and nutrition. My teacher at the time encouraged me to look into a career as a Dietitian and it went from there. After graduating from University with a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics, I established my own Dietetic practice in Sydney, offering clients one-on-one Dietitian consultations. My clients, as well as friends and family, were always asking what I did for my own healthy eating, as well as wanting more recipes and health tips, so I started my Instagram @nourish_naturally as a way to document all this and provide extra information for my clients.
How long have you been an accredited Dietitian &; Nutritionist for now?
I graduated with a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours I) from the University of Wollongong in 2010 and I’ve been working as an Accredited Practising Dietitian since then. When I graduated, I worked as The Flying Dietitian travelling to rural NSW to work with indigenous communities, as well as setting up my own Dietetic practice in Sydney, working one-on-one with clients for individual Dietitian appointments. It was extremely challenging but very rewarding.
Share with us a bit about your pregnancy journey and birth?
Pregnancy was an amazing experience. Overall I loved it but it definitely had its challenges. I found the first trimester difficult as I had a lot of morning sickness. I loved the second trimester; I felt happy and energetic and loved seeing my bump grow. By the second half of the third trimester, I was feeling so big and uncomfortable, wasn’t sleeping well and was struggling with reflux and I was ready for bub to come out. I was so thankful to have such an amazing husband to support me throughout the journey.
Your week on a plate as a new mama.
Since having bubba, my eating has been fairly similar to before having him, I just eat more frequently and more food. Most days of eating have been very similar. I start with a smoothie, which my husband makes me each morning and I drink while I’m breastfeeding bub. My smoothie consists of fruit like frozen banana, mango, passionfruit and berries, some seeds like hemp or chia seeds, some oats or quinoa, a veggie like spinach, some nuts and soy milk. I have a large serving of this, usually two big smoothie cups full. I also have a coffee around this time too. I then snack a fair bit between breakfast and lunch. My snacks consist of things that I can grab and eat while feeding bub or doing house work,
NOTED MAGAZINE
such as veggie sticks and dip, fresh fruit, homemade banana bread and nuts. I also snack on similar things between lunch and dinner. Lunch has been leftovers from dinner the night before and my dinners consist of either salad or baked veggies with fish, lentils, beans or tofu and some form of carbohydrate like sweet potato, brown rice etc. We like to flavour our meals with fresh ingredients like ginger, garlic, chilli and herbs. I always have dessert and I love having fruit salad and yoghurt after dinner.
Go to snack?
Fresh fruit is delicious, convenient, portable, comes in its own packaging and is extremely healthy.
What is the importance of nourishing our bodies with great, healthy food and drink.
Food physically becomes you! It makes up every cell in your body – your muscles, hair, skin, heart. We need to nourish our bodies with healthy, real, wholesome foods to ensure our bodies function healthily, to feel energetic and live the life we were created to.
Best thing about being a mama?
Being so in love with my baby boy. I honestly can’t explain how much I love him.
Best part of being involved in the health industry?
Making a real difference in people’s lives. When people tell me that they have made changes to their eating and lifestyle and have more energy, feel healthier, have lost weight, lowered their cholesterol, got their diabetes under control, or that their family is now healthier and happier, it honestly makes my day!
What are some of your hobbies aside from your business?
I absolutely love running. It makes me feel alive. I love running outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine. During my pregnancy I stopped running and I’m so excited for when I’m able to get back into it. I also can’t wait for the day when I’ll be able to run around and play with my baby boy.
Where to from here for you and your family?
I haven’t really thought that far ahead actually. I’m really just taking it one day at a time and soaking up all the precious moments with bubba.
Advice for new mamas?
Take your time and don’t stress. Everything is so new and you and bub need to learn things together. And don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. ~~~~~~ You can find Rebecca on Instagram at @nourish_naturally and get great recipes and health tips from her blog rebeccagawthorne.com.au.

Me
‘Mum-Ghosting’ - the phenomenon explained - why it can happen and ways to help you better understand and overcome it all as a mama.
Being pregnant and knowing you’ll soon become a mum can be very exciting. But the minute you find out you’re expecting, your responsibilities might change drastically from those of your friends’, if you’re the first one to have a baby. Suddenly you have this tiny human being growing inside of you. You have to eat healthily, you have to get rest and soon you won’t be able to move as easy as you used to. But the ‘negative’ parts of motherhood aren’t limited to the changes in your body. You might feel that your friends are abandoning you too. This phenomenon is called ‘mum ghosting’. SO WHAT IS ‘GHOSTING’? ‘Ghosting’ is when you suddenly end a personal relationship with someone, without any explanation. So ‘mum-ghosting’ is when your friends seem to disappear when you find out you’re pregnant, or you give birth. One thing to remember is that you’re not the only person this happens to. It’s very common that people just suddenly end a relationship without any explanation. They’ll still send you a message, but then that might be the last you hear from them. The term ‘ghosting’ implies that there is no explanation for this disappearance. WHY DO PEOPLE GHOST? Most instances of ‘mum-ghosting’ happen without any explanation. Here are possible reasons why a friend might have ghosted you: They can’t relate to your situation – It might be because you’re the first of your group of friends to be pregnant/give birth. Therefore they don’t know anything about leaky breasts or swollen feet. They might be ‘grossed out’ – Let’s face it: Being pregnant or having children can be quite yucky. Your friend doesn’t want to get into something she might later regret.
They don’t ‘like’ children – Being around a screaming baby or constantly walking on eggshells to not wake the baby can be tough for someone who hasn’t been through it. They think you’ll only have time for the baby – It can be tough the first few weeks, and you’ll probably only sleep and feed the little one. Your friends might not get this and they might think that this is how it’s going to be from now on. They feel uncomfortable – For someone who’s not used to seeing someone else’s boobs when she feeds a baby, it can be quite uncomfortable. And when the baby is hungry, you need to feed her so taking out a boob while having coffee with a friend won’t be everyone’s cup of tea (excuse the pun). The last thing you want to do is panic - in fact it’s the worst thing you can do! Easy said than done right? Yep! You might hear less from certain friends, but you’ll also become closer to others, or make new ones amongst the other mums you meet at hospital appointments or breastfeeding groups. If you miss one of your friends, just get in touch! They might have stepped back because they’re worried you may have moved on. Don’t be afraid to make the first move and arrange a coffee date, invite them to meet your little one, or enjoy something you’ve loved together in the past. Not sure where to start? You could always join local birth clubs, mum groups in your area or through the hospital you birthed in and get in touch with other mums of babies the same age. Remember there’s always someone who feels just the same as you!
“
Your best, no matter what that looks like today, is enough.

Autism MOTHERHOOD &
A Mother’s Guide on the Topic of Autism, By Alyssa Quintal
After all the setbacks and limits imposed on your child, after all the chaos that comes with special needs, the one constant is love. However, it can also be a bitter experience as society still struggles with different. As the mum of an 8 year old autistic son I have grown accustomed to the stares when he is having a meltdown or the glares and burrowed frowns when he says something inappropriate as he learns about societal rules and expectations. Yet, even with all the stares and the burrowed frowns I don’t get angry or resentful. I am well aware that from the outside looking in he just looks like a boy having a tantrum or being rude. I am aware that they don’t know his story. It’s what happens when they do know his story, when I do tell them that he has autism and the way they respond that can leave me feeling sad and misunderstood. This is the part where society can do better. Language around sensitive topics such as disabilities needs to improve and people should be cautious in the way they approach the topic. Often in an attempt to diffuse their own awkwardness on the subject people will start telling me about their friends, cousin’s brother in-laws child that has autism, or how smart autistic people are and every other stereotype about
autism. All the while, I stand there holding my breath, waiting anxiously for them to stop talking because quite frankly I don’t want to hear it. I don’t need to be inspired or hear a feel-good story to make me feel better about his diagnosis and I don’t need pity because he is happy and I am happy. In this situation there are only two appropriate responses. The first is the person can say “ok” or “cool” and move on with the conversation. Autism doesn’t need to be the topic of conversation if the person isn’t genuinely interested. The second response is to ask me questions. I don’t expect anyone to know all about autism, and since every autistic person is different a person could ask me what autism means to my son or ask about the things we have in place for him. It’s that simple! Sometimes when we don’t have the right words to say we should say nothing at all, or ask questions and listen and take the opportunity to be educated. Language is important and everyone needs to do better at choosing their words wisely. photocredits: Supplied by Alyssa Quintal
The journey through motherhood with a special needs child is a bittersweet experience. It’s sweet because you see the world through a different pair of eyes, you also realise love has no limits or boundaries.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in our body. In fact, it accounts for 2% of our total body weight.
BY REBECCA GAWTHORNE
Why do we need Calcium? We hear you say. Calcium is essential to all cells in our body. It plays many vital roles and is required for skeletal function – mineralisation of our bones and teeth, muscular function – needed for muscle contraction and relaxation, heart function, hlood clotting, immune defences, nervous system – nervous impulse transmission, activating enzyme reactions and our body’s cellular metabolism. All in all, our body really needs it. 99% of calcium is stored in our bones and teeth, while the remaining 1% is found in our extracellular fluid (fluid surrounding our cells). Anyway, enough with the facts and figures. How much do we need to consume every day? Calcium is an essential nutrient, meaning our body does not produce calcium, so we must obtain it from food. After food is digested in the stomach, calcium is primarily absorbed in the duodenum, which is the first part of our small intestine. Is there such a things as having too much? We’re glad you asked. The upper limit for calcium is 2500mg/day. High levels of urinary calcium can increase yout risk of developing kidney stones, or in extreme cases (over-supplementation), renal failure. If you don’t get enough, low calcium levels can lead to hypocalcaemia (calcium deficiency), which can be associated with many health implications, including dental health – brittle teeth, tooth decay, irritated gums, numbness in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, weak, brittle nails and even osteoporosis.

Which brings us to the truth about going dairy free- why would you do it? For a variety of health, allergy, intolerance and nutritional reasons, people across the globe are going off dairy. Dairy foods are rich in calcium and have a high calcium bioavailability. However, this doesn’t mean that you need to consume dairy to meet your calcium needs. There are a wide range of non-dairy calcium-rich foods around now for those who can not, or choose not, to consume dairy. And the most mind boggling thing you may here today - you CAN meet your calcium needs without dairy (and without consuming a small country’s world of food). photocredit: lorem ipsum dolore
18
www.lucie-magazine.com
Here are some non-dairy, calcium-rich food sources (and above): Fish with bones (sardine, salmon) (279mg per small can) Nuts (almonds) (30 mg in 10 almonds) Calcium fortified soy, or almond milks (309mg per 250 ml, of a fortified soy milk) Broccoli (15mg in 2 florets) Brussel sprouts (42mg per 100g) Cauliflower (22mg per 100g) Leafy greens (150mg per 100g kale) Tofu firm (832mg per cup) Beans/Legumes (90mg per cup of canned chickpeas) Oranges (40mg per 100g) Calcium fortified breakfast cereals (200mg per cup of fortified cereals) Dried figs (160 mg in 6 figs) Supplements – calcium citrate or carbonate: 500-600mg doses are recommended per day. You can keep a record of what you eat and add up the amount of calcium to see if you are reaching your calcium requirements. If you are unsure if you are getting enough calcium, see a Dietitian to help determine this. Truth be told, dairy products are not the only source of calcium for a healthy body. Ensuring that you consume adequate amounts of calcium from a variety good quality sources every day (like those listed above) can ensure that your bones, joints, muscles and teeth stay strong.

“My goal is to show people that there is hope even if you are struggling with your mental health - it is only temporary and you will be well again.” I honestly thought motherhood would be a breeze. I had been working in corporate HR, working up to 60 hours a week- so becoming a mother would be easy I thought. But my idyllic birth turned into a traumatic ordeal, and a few days afterwards I started acting very strangely. Instead of the baby blues, my energy levels increased- I wanted to go shopping, get dressed up and I talked a million miles an hour about odd topics. I was becoming manic- but no one around me knew the signs. I was then diagnosed with bipolar disorder triggered by childbirth. After the intense mania I was struck by crippling depression. The doctors had told me it would come- but I didn’t believe them as I was such a bubbly person- surely I couldn’t become depressed? Even though I recovered from those episodes- bipolar is an illness I will have to manage for the rest of my life. It opened my eyes up to the mental health epidemic we now have and was a key driver to me wanting to make a difference in this space. After having my second baby and managing to stay well the whole time I set about developing The Kite Program- a beautiful wellbeing and mental health app resource for mothers.
5 WAYS TO QUICKLY LIFT YOUR
Being featured in Forbes was one of my PR highlights- as it showcased Kite as well as the fact I am a female entrepreneur who has used my mental health experience to start my business. It is hopefully a sign of times changing in respect to how we talk about mental health.
1. MUSIC
Kite is now available as an app template for organisations to use for the wellbeing of their people, a specific Kite app for the health industry, and one for the advertising industry. We are also investigating a resource for farmers and one for teenagers- and so many more.
2. LAUGH
Kite gives our users the tools and skills to deal with difficult issues in a private and caring way. The fact it is completely beautiful is the icing on the cake.
It might be a candle or handcream, or the pages of a magazine. Spend a few minutes with your eyes closed, taking deep breaths and focusing on nothing than that smell.
Put some earphones in and play a favourite song up loud. Sing at the top of your voice if you can, or alternatively play it in the car. While you are listening focus on one aspect of the song- either the lyrics or the beat. This is also a nice way to focus your mind.
Ring a friend who makes you laugh- or watch a funny clip online. If your kids are around ask them to make you laugh with a song or a dance. Laughing is a lovely way to lift your energy levels.
3. FOCUS ON A SMELL THAT YOU LOVE
4. INCREASE YOUR HEART RATE
Hannah
...Even just for a short period. You don’t have to go for a run- doing ten star jumps or jogging on the spot is enough to get your heart rate up and to release those endorphins. Involve your kids for a bit of fun- see who can do 20 star jumps the quickest.
Kite is a beautiful analogy for wellbeing- as mothers we so often leave our kites discarded on the ground while we help our children’s kite soar. Kite as an app helps mums fly their kites high too- by allowing them to tackle everyday challenges in a private and beautiful way. Simple bite sized daily activities that work.
5. MAKE A HOT DRINK
...in your favourite mug or teacup. Take it outside and drink it while breathing in the air- even if it is a cold day. Concentrate on the mug and the drink- and feel it recharging you.
Hannah lives in Christchurch, New Zealand with her husband and two children who are 6 and 2. Kite for Mums launched at the beginning of March and is available on both the App Store and Google Play. Hannah also has a blog that shares her postpartum bipolar story and you can read at www.thekiteprogram.com/blog
photocredits: The Kite Program
I launched Kite at the start of March, and we have users from all around the world. Feedback from mums has been just how beautiful and respectful it is- and how easy to implement it is. The most popular topics have been Better Together (how to reconnect in your relationship) and Just Breathe (reduce your stress). Kite has received incredible publicity- partly due to the fact I have been so open about my mental health journey. My goal is to show people that there is hope even if you are struggling with your mental health -it is only temporary and you will be well again.

It’s the beginning of a new year and even a new decade! The start of a fresh year is the perfect opportunity to set yourself goals, new habits and declutter your house! Now I know you’re probably thinking “that’s all too overwhelming” but I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be! Creating healthy habits and even decluttering your home can be done bit by bit! You can expect to change your whole lifestyle and home in one day, these things take time. Here are my top tips on goal setting and decluttering your home and mind for the new year!
SET GOALS
Usually when you think of goals for the new year things like “lose 10 kgs” or “save for a home” can come to mind. But goals like these can tend to be short lived unless you have deep purpose as to WHY you want to achieve those things. You can’t rely on motivation year-round to achieve these goals, rather you need to have a bigger purpose that will drive you to move closer towards that goal each and every day. Let’s look at it this way; instead on focusing on “losing X amount of weight” you decide to be healthier because you want to be able to run around with your kids, or you want to FEEL amazing then THAT is a good purpose and reason for you to move your body each day and make healthier food choices.
NEW HABITS
Once you have decoded on your goals and PURPOSE behind those goals then it’s time to decide your new habits that will get you close to these goals each day. For example, if it’s to be healthier for your kids some daily habits would be; drink 2-3L of water per day, eat regularly and move 3 times a week. This then gives you easy tasks to tick off each day/week. If it’s to save for a new home you would want to come up with some daily saving habits you can complete. It could be simply making coffee at home in the morning instead of buying it each day, or shopping at a cheaper supermarket. In ‘Steph Pase Planners’ each week has a habit tracker so you can write down these small habits and tick them off as you go! Achieving your goals and creating new habits doesn’t have to be hard or overwhelming. Small daily habits add up to amazing results!

Clear home leads to a clear mind! Again when it comes to tackling your home- you don’t need to look at the entire picture. Complete the declutter section by section, whether that be a drawer each day or an area each week! In the ‘Steph Pase Planners’ I have a couple of easy to follow declutter and spring cleaning challenges throughout which set you small achievable tasks each day and by the end of the month you’ve made a complete transformation! If you’re a mum you may have noticed you can’t find a nappy bag you actually like? Well, I noticed. That’s why I created Alf the Label. When I was pregnant with my first child Ari, I scoured the web and stores to find a nappy bag I wouldn’t be mortified to hang off my pram. Low and behold, I couldn’t find one. I’m of the opinion you shouldn’t have to look like a dag just ‘cos you’re a mum. I want mums to be able to tote around an epic bag that makes them feel like a queen. So, I created Alf the Label. Australia’s go-to baby bag brand if you want functionality and space for your mum and baby essentials, but don’t want to compromise on style. More than just nappy bags, I like to think of them as epic bags for #mumlife. Alf has been operating since October 2016, sending thousands of nappy bags to fashionable mamas who didn’t want to carry round a bag that doesn’t reflect their unique individual style. We have also created an incredible Alf #mummunity through our social channels (Instagram) where we have a highly engaged and supportive following of 30,000 mums worldwide who turn to us for tips, advice and to inject a bit of fun into their daily mum life! TRAVEL
Paris IN FOUR DAYS By Jo Curran, Pretty Petite Co
TRAVEL
“We’re going to wait until the kids are older” and “They won’t remember it”….a few standard responses when people talk about travelling with kids. But I was given advice that has really stuck with me and shaped our biggest travel decisions for the better: ‘Your kids might not remember every tiny detail about their holiday. But you sure will. You’ll cherish those memories for a lifetime”. And I couldn’t agree more! I will NEVER forget the way Aoife’s hands waved wildly, the squeaks that escaped her mouth and how she tiptoed around in circles when she saw the Eiffel Tower for the very first time. That moment will be forever etched deep into my memories for as long as I live. For my husband and I, having kids has given us more reasons to travel, not reasons to stop. So if you’re thinking about it…. DO IT! In my experience, you’ll never regret the memories you make with them. Here are a few pointers to help when planning your trip to Paris:
find a place in your heart that you will want to go back to.
Getting There
Eats
From Charles De Gaulle airport to the city is really easy. When you arrive, you’ll find a Transport Kiosk which allows you to pop your address, giving you a list of transport options, distance, time and cost (kind of like a google maps). If choosing a taxi, be sure to take a ‘Taxi Officiel’ – Paris’s licenced taxi’s. Don’t be surprised if a Mercedes pulls up to take you through the city in style. (I actually have a story to tell you about this…keep reading!)
Getting Around
The RER (train) and Metro lines are AMAZING! Clean, fast, convenient and inexpensive. Even if you’re just making a few stops, getting a day pass is cheaper, with much more flexibility. You are likely to be swept up in the beauty of Paris and find yourself somewhere unexpected. You can also catch a bus, hire a bike or motorised scooter and a pedicab (a pushbike taxi).
Accommodation
Seeing the City Go on – be a tourist and take an open top bus tour! It really is the BEST way to see the city, the main attractions and give you your bearings. You’ll see the major attractions and be able to jump off, spend some time, jump back on and see the next sight. There are so many companies to choose from, but look for the one that offers a few different routes, and operates longer hours. Daylight lasts a long time in Paris in the Summer months, and you want to make the most of it! Our hotel concierge recommended ours for these reasons and we went with Open Tour Paris. You’ll see the Louvre, Champs Elysees, Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, Trocadero (super dooper popular Eiffel Tower photo opp!) Petit Palais and the Grand Palais and so many other sights!
Café, café, café baby! They are practically on every corner and if you can read French menu’s, you will have no troubles deciding which spot is right for you! Some will have their menu in both French and English, which is very considerate (whoever said the French were rude have it all wrong!). Despite all of this, you MUST have a hot chocolate at Angelina (if it’s good enough for Coco Chanel, then it’s good enough for me!), macaroons at Laduree, high tea at the Plaza Athenee or grab an ice-cream and head to the Pont Alexandre III Bridge…I’ve sensed a theme going on here – maybe I have a sweeter tooth than I realise...Grab a baguette and head to one of the gorgeous parks such as Jardin du Luxembourg. Any chance to get out and see the city from another view is also a bonus – so for something a little more luxurious, booking onto an evening dinner river cruise is an unforgettable way to see the city with delicious French food and wine.
Disneyland
The possibilities are endless, if your budget is too! Truth be told, Paris is not cheap…but DAMN it is worth every penny. Find something central and walk as much as possible, giving you the chance to really soak up the culture, the history and the INCREDIBLE architecture! Paris is broken up into areas called Arrondissements. They are organised into a snail shell pattern starting from the 1st Arrondissement right up to the 20th. We stayed in the 8th at the breathtaking Hotel Alfred Sommier, an experience within itself. We booked through Trivago, giving us a slightly better deal, but it’s definitely worth comparing prices and location - you don’t want something cheap to then spend hours each day getting into the city.
A MUST…It’s every little kid (and big kid’s) dream! Super easy to get to on the RER train line - it’s about an hour out of the city. You can download a Disneyland Paris App and plan your visit. If I could do our time again, I would have booked into the hotel at the park to rest for a few hours after the parade (definite highlight!) and see the night time fireworks. I suggest comfy shoes for everyone, a backpack with some snacks and plenty of water as there are only a few bubblers and the food and drink is really expensive. We didn’t get a fast pass to skip the ques, but it is an option if you want to pay a little extra. The longest we queued for was about 45mins to visit the Disney princesses, everything else was 10 – 20mins which I think was pretty decent. If you can avoid going during Paris’s worst ever recorded heatwave – I would also suggest that!
Planning Your Trip
Carousel Rides
It sounds so cliché, but you can literally lose yourself in time in Paris. For me, I could have spent an endless amount of days, just wandering, exploring and taking my time to fall even deeper in love with this beautiful city. But for my husband, 4 days was Goldilocks – juuuust right! The amount of time you decide to stay all depends on your other travel commitments, so find yourselves a happy compromise. 4 days was probably the least amount of time you need to explore when you factor in the time it takes to arrive and depart (you almost loose a day). Make a plan of things you want to see, but also allow yourself some additional ‘roaming’ time. There are things that you will visit briefly that will really
Nothing says fairy-tale more. They are the playground of Paris and you’ll have some ‘pinch me’ moments as you sail around the city. There are a few permanent ones through the city, and some that pop up for special occasions. Head to the Jardin des Tuileries, the Eiffel Tower and Hotel de Ville for some of the prettiest ones. But all in all, when planning a trip to Paris…or anywhere for that matter with your family…don’t sweat the small stuff. Happy planning!

What initiated your drive to begin?
Q and A with
NOTED MAGAZINE
Motherhood is so different for everyone but I thoroughly enjoyed those early years... with no place to go and no times to be somewhere (eg school) I have three kiddies 2 boys and 1 girl and I loved being pregnant I was so happy, thankful to be creating a life and just loved it! Im sure at the time I wasnt as enthusastic but in reflection now I loved the sleepless nights and how much my babies needed me - as they grow they still need me but Im finding each year to become more difficult and am needing to learn and grow myself too.
How do you find balancing business with family?
I believe that there is no such thing as balance and that it is important to learn to accept that you can never be everywhere and give your 100% to everything something will always be off - so my hot tip is to accept that and focus on what you are good at because thats where you will always excel. Bonnie is my little muse and she inspires me everyday... I also draw inspiration from my own mum as she ran her own childrens clothing label while I was growing up. I remember always being under the sewing machine and flicking through kids fashion mags like bambini ect. I love classic cuts and
retro/vintage styles. I create my take on those.
Most enjoy about being a mama?
Best thing about being a mama is the unconditional love. When you think you have messed up they remind you that you didnt.
Favourite thing about owning a small biz?
The small biz industry has sooo many postives but I think the main is the ability to connect with like minded women and being able to learn, grow and succeed along side one another. Some of my faves are Luly and Milly, Topknot girl, Bluebird co.
Hardest part about owning a small business?
Small biz is a 24hour a day job there is no break and no off time especially in the beginning - although I feel like this still almost 5 years on. You put your heart into everything you do and this can be a downfall as your heart can be hurt very easily. Because there is no one filtering the feedback you recieve you can let a small comment from a customer break you - this has happened to me a few times and when it does I remember to share that I am a human too and that being kind is so important. It usually happens when Im feeling overwhelmed and or run down and i usually see this and take a short time away to reflect too.
Where to from here for Bonnie & Harlo?
This year we have grown with the arrival of two team members Nat and Elle ( @shelovedfiercephotography) and I am just loving where these two beautiful souls have helped take Bonnie & Harlo this year. We are excited for 2020 and cant wait to share what we have been working on. It is set to be a big year as my little Bonnie is off to prep too.

How long have you been in business?
PONO Probiotics has been running for just over 2 years and 9 months.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
HAWAII!!!!! Which reminds me that I am way overdue for a holiday there – Or should I say working trip. He he. I love the Hawaiian lifestyle, the palm trees, the ocean and I guess that aloha spirit.
What are some of your hobbies aside from your business? What do you love most about your business?
I love that it’s an area I am so passionate about. I feel the brand encapsulates all that I love, and I am able to express my creative side through the business.
What drove you to create and begin?
DAINA
LINDSAY The mama behind PONO PROBIOTICS
It was in 2016 when I experienced firsthand the benefits of probiotics. I had relocated my family from South Australia to Queensland and in the process, introduced my two children to a new childcare, new climate and new illnesses. After a few months of settling in and my kids catching everything under the sun, my youngest son ended up in intensive care with a respiratory infection. After a 24 hour stay, I began to look at the possibility that there may be a further underlying issue with his immune system. I learned and researched the importance of gut health for everyone, and particularly for our little ones. This is what lead me to the creation of PONO Probiotics. I noticed a gap in the market for fun family friendly probiotics that are a powder format and taste delicious, making them an easy addition to your daily routine.
Where does the name come from?
My family and I have always had an obsession with Hawaii. There is just something so spiritual and magical about it, so I felt the name of our product needed to have some sort of Hawaiian feel. We came across the word PONO - an ancient Hawaiian word that means rightness, correctness, alignment, goodness, excellence and well-being. These are things that we hope for in life for ourselves, our families and also our bodies!
I love running, I call it my mediation! I made it my goal to run 4 half marathons this year, which I achieved. So, I hope to continue this. I also just love spending time with my husband and kids. That’s not really a hobby, but it’s certainly what makes me happy! Long summer days on the beach and we are all in our element.
Top tips for keeping your health in check as a busy woman?
For me it’s just sticking to the basics. I maintain a healthy and balanced diet, drink plenty of water, and I try to get enough sleep each night. But, it is also really important to have some “Me” time. A time to focus on yourself.
Favourite go-to pono products?
My favourite product is our Broad Spectrum Coconut Plus. I am obsessed with Coconut – so I love adding this to my morning smoothie or overnight oats.
Where to from here for your business?
This year has been a year of reflection and simplifying for the business. I have made changes to our formulas to make them the best they possibly can be, so next year will be about growth. I would love to focus on getting our products stocked in more stores around Australia.
Anything else you would like to add?

Bec, where did it all begin for Golden the Label?
No matter how chaotic it is, wildflowers still spring up in the middle of nowhere.
“
- Bec Crombie, Golden the Label
GOLDEN BEC CROMBIE
My beginnings in small business began when my son was born 6 years ago. I found a huge gap in the market for boys fashion. At the time there was very minimal on-trend, stylish clothing for children (especially boys) that didn’t have characters or ‘child like’ prints all over them. This is where my first label was born. Initially I was designing & sewing all of the pieces myself, however it grew incredibly quickly and I was unable to keep up with demand of business life and new mum life. I then began outsourcing the sewing, however all of our products were still 100% produced in Brisbane. Eventually I sold the business to focus more on motherhood. I strongly believe in only following pursuits that you’re 100% passionate about and enjoying, and although the label was very successful, it was no longer bringing me joy. Fast forward 3 years later, and I was craving a creative outlet, and to reignite my passion for design & fashion. Now a mother of two, and a lover of beach days - I was finding myself frustrated by carting 2 to 3 bags to the beach to carry all of our belongings, this is where my journey with Golden Days Co (now rebranded to GOLDEN the label) began.

How do you find balancing family with business?
@calissabreephotography
I try to set myself certain ‘work’ days so that our days aren’t completely consumed by work. This will change when Nylah goes to kindy / school, but for now I’m setting aside time for her aswell. Kruize is at school so balancing our time together with work isn’t really impacted. Where possible, I have a family member watch Nylah on my work days, especially when I have large volumes of orders to pack, or if I’m finalising a collection.
Can you share with us a bit about your pregnancy journey and raising children, while balancing work from home?
I’m blessed and grateful that both my pregnancies and births with the
the label
kids have been fairly uneventful. A few little things I’ve implemented that help with balance: I generally don’t work on weekends or at night. I am trying to set some boundaries for myself, and believe it is important to have ‘me’ time once the children are in bed of a night. However recently I’ve had to pack orders on weekends and at night in order to stay on top of the volume. My main downfall with owning my business is that I actually really struggle with switching off, I love what I do so much that it consumes me at times! Prime example - as I write this it is a Saturday afternoon and I’ve spent the day at the zoo with the kids while my husband was working - we are having some ‘quiet time’ to wind down, and I of course have ducked into the studio to get some work done. Every morning I have a ‘work meeting’ with myself (I know it sounds ridiculous but I’m a big believer in setting expectations / patterns of behaviour for where you see yourself in the future, at the beginning). I sit down with a cup of tea and delegate / prioritise 3 tasks for the day. I find it helps me stay focused and I can work through them, whilst referring back to the list throughout the day. It is also super satisfying ticking off the jobs when they’ve been completed. On good days I can smash out 6 or more tasks, and some days (generally when the kids are wanting some extra mum time) I only get through 1 or 2.
Best thing about being a mama?
There is nothing better than their big squeezey hugs & hearing them say I love you.
Most rewarding part of being involved in small biz?
I love that I can (virtually) work alongside some super savvy, creative women, and that we are able to each lift each other up / praise the work we’ve created without it being a competition.
