#notj MARKETING DIRECTOR M.MANTHEY Q1: NIGHT of the JUMPs has been in existence since 2001 as an events series, and since 2006, it has styled itself as the official Freestyle World Championship with the blessing of the FIM. What was actually the original idea behind this? Since 1996, we have been the organisers of the EUROPEAN KING of DIRT, a BMX dirt jumps series which also served as qualifying round for the X Games. At the ISPO Summer Games in Munich, we saw AIRCROSS for the first time. That was the inspiration for the 2001 NIGHT of the JUMPs in Riesa. The FIM then realised that this ‘bunch of weirdoes’ were actually quite cool and that what we were doing counts as a real sport. Since 2006, we’ve had our own official World Championship.
Q5: Looking back, what have been your highs and lows? Pulling in a crowd of 40,000 in Brazil and also the Freestyle of Nations at Schalke were certainly highlights. But in all the years, there have been so many stories to tell and impressions to absorb that it’s difficult to sum them up. We try to keep our fans informed via the social media so that they can share the experiences surrounding NIGHT of the JUMPs. Low points? There were certainly some financial setbacks, but the worst aspect is when riders get injured. For example, it was a very emotional situation when we informed David Rinaldo as he was on his way to hospital that he had won the world championship and that his father was accepting the trophy on his behalf.
Q2: How many events have you staged so far? In how many different cities and countries? There have been 288 events in 17 countries and on four continents, with more than two million fans coming through the doors.
Q6: Currently, there are several similar freestyle events going on around the world such as the Red Bull X Fighters, Global X Games, Nitro Circus, Masters of Dirt, etc. Do you regard them as unwelcome competition or extra motivation? The competition spurs us on. We go to rival events and form our opinions. We try within the existing budget to deliver the absolute best, and we believe our focus on the sporting aspects and on promoting genuine competition is a unique selling point for our product.
Q3: What are the main factors that have contributed to this sustained success? We have stayed true to ourselves. Our priorities are rider safety and entertainment value for the spectators. What’s more, we have a genuine sport here with a title worth competing for, namely a world championship. That’s who we are, and the fans appreciate us for that. Q4: Your backroom team doesn’t seem to change much from year to year. Who is behind NIGHT of the JUMPs and how many of you are there? Yes, there are about 20 people on the team, and some of us have been around since the first NIGHT of the JUMPs, even if only as spectators. If you’ve been travelling round the world in each other’s company for almost 15 years, then you really have a lot in common. It bonds you together as a team, and we very much hope that this will continue for many more years to come.
Q7: Where do you go from here? More global in your reach, more daring in your challenges, or a new format altogether? Or maybe just carrying on with a proven concept? Within the constraints of the venues, we intend to build even more spectacular track layouts. We will expand our activities in Asia and South America and carry on upholding the spirit of sporting fairness. And obviously, we will also continue to refine the fireworks display and the side competitions.

When talking about Freestyle the discussion is always about the riders and their individual tricks and performances. The Freestyle of Nations event was created to pit nation against nation in a team format in a range of disciplines to determine the overall best freestyle nation. For the inaugural event the world’s largest indoor track was assembled, with 8 ramps, 7 landings, a quarter pipe and a dirt kicker to encourage all the riders’ creativity and courage as well as a race and style course to create the perfect FMX playground. In an epic battle the Spanish team with Dany Torres, Maikel Melero and José Miralles proved their class and style prevailing over a gallant French team to claim the first ever Freestyle Motorcross Team World Championship.

The NOTJ returned with a bang in Cologne with many riders unveiling new tricks to a packed crowd at LANXESS arena. The first trick of the night- a Volt from Kai Hasse left everyone stunned, but it didn’t stop there with other riders demonstrating their new repertoire executing the extremely difficult ‘California roll’, ‘540 flair’ and other new combinations. With all the riders at home in their respective countries relaxing and training for the upcoming NOTJ events, we sent Steve Sommerfeld out to catch up with the riders at their homes. Find out about their training compounds, their practice routines and what new tricks they’re preparing for the return of NOTJ at www.youtube.com/ nightofthejumpscom
