he 45-year career of John Prine has solidly ensconced him in the realm of iconic folk singer/ songwriters. See the master perform at the 22nd Annual Kate Wolf Music Festival, where he’ll join headliners Bruce Cockburn and Brandi Carlile as well as a whole host of top-notch acts, including Baka Beyond and Dar Williams. Besides concerts, the festival will offer classes in tai chi and yoga as well as the chance to sing in a community choir. There will even be a KidZone with arts and crafts activities and special concerts for the wee ones. The event will be held June 22–25 at Black Oak Ranch in Laytonville. otorboats may be little, but they’re also fast. For instance, the vessels in the Lakeport Sprint Boat Grand Prix will race across Clear Lake at speeds up to 140 mph. The two-day professional competition will feature eight classes of boats vying for cash and trophies. ake learning about American history an interactive affair. Take the kids to the Battles at Bell’s Field Civil War Reenactment. Dress everyone in costume, if you like, and then watch skirmishes staged with muskets and cannons, take a tour of encampments, and chat with ladies in hoop skirts. Perhaps this is one reason why Kelseyville Sunrise Rotary has named its annual fundraiser Denim and Diamonds. Mendocino Headlands Trail
Mendocino County Philo Little Hendy Grove Trail and Big Hendy Grove Trail, both part of a couple of miles of interlocking loop trails in Hendy Woods State Park, are great for short, kid-friendly redwood adventures. So is the Hermit Hut Trail, the former stomping grounds of a Russian immigrant who lived there during the middle of the last century. Go about a half-mile down the trail to the turnoff that leads to the downed redwood that served as the hermit’s home for a couple of decades. Dogs are not allowed. There are flush toilets in the campground, which lies between the Little Hendy and Big Hendy trails. See www.parks. ca.gov/?page_id=438 for details. 10 MendoLakeFamilyLife
Mendocino For an easy, flat hike with incredible scenery, try the Mendocino Headlands Trail, which is within walking distance of Mendocino. Get a treat in town, learn a bit of local history at the Ford House Museum and Visitor Center, and then walk over to the trailhead. Wind through about two and a half miles of gorgeous coastline with stunning views of bluffs and secluded beaches before landing
at Cypress Grove. Whale or bird watch, or just take in the landscape. The only downside is that the trail is heavily trafficked during tourist season, but the vistas are well worth it. Be sure to dress warmly for those strong coastal winds. Leashed dogs are allowed. Restrooms with flush toilets are at the Ford House and at Cypress Grove. Park on Main Street or at the lot at Heeser Drive and Little Lake Street (not Road)—a great place to watch the sunset.

Lower Lake If you’re after abundant wildlife, take your binoculars to the McVicar Trail in the Anderson Marsh State Historic Park, where wetlands draw in hundreds of species of birds, including great blue herons, pileated woodpeckers, and red-winged black birds. You may even catch a glimpse of a deer, bobcat, or fox, too. The Kelseyville Long before Europeans settled in Northern California, the Pomo Native Americans made their home in Lake County. On the half-mile, self-guided Indian Nature Trail loop in Clear Lake State Park, you and the kids can find out about the plants that they used to survive. In addition to lessons in natural history, the trail also offers a smattering of wildflowers and lovely views overlooking the valley. For a longer, more challenging walk, try the Dorn Nature Trail. The two-and-a-half-mile loop begins on a steep incline through the woods and then gradually zigzags its way up a ridge and into a meadow, where vistas and colorful flora await. Pets are not allowed on either trail, however they are allowed on the quarter-mile Kelsey Creek Trail, which runs along the Kelsey Creek Campground. (The campground itself is closed due to flood damage.) There are restrooms with flush toilets throughout the park but www.mendolakefamilylife.com
eight-mile (round-trip), generally flat, wide, dirt trail, goes all the way to Clear Lake, but you can turn around at any juncture. A good part of the path is exposed, so be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and bring water. Dogs are not allowed. Porta-potties are available in the parking lot, which is open only on the weekends, 8 a.m.–8 p.m. (The park itself is open all week,

You can see some fine specimens at the Wood and Glory XIX Boat Show, which will feature 45–60 antique wooden vessels and also classic cars. A Birthday Baaash

Goats Need to Party, Too By Holly Hester
W
hen I was a kid I used to celebrate my dog’s birthday with a party. I’d bake a cake and put dog bones in it, and then I’d invite the neighborhood dogs over (with their owners) and celebrate. I don’t ever remember a dog party that didn’t end abruptly in some horrible dogfight over the cake and bones, but still, the spirit of dog fun was always in the air and no one was ever sent to the hospital. And ever since I told my kids about my dog birthday parties, they’ve wanted to have a birthday party for one of our animals. I didn’t want to pick one of the dogs because I knew it would end in a fight. I didn’t want to pick one of the cats because none of them would really care. I can’t imagine what a chicken birthday party would entail, and I didn’t want to do a party for Hogan the pig because he’s always on a perpetual diet. He doesn’t need birthday cake added to his waistline. It seemed like the goats were the only real choice. They just turned two years old, and besides, goats have a wonderful dog-like quality of being up for anything. It’s like, Hey, is this what we’re doing now? Awesome! I knew that deep down the goats would appreciate our efforts…and I was right. 22 MendoLakeFamilyLife
We made two cakes—a pink cake for Garfield and a purple cake for Odie. I decided to not go organic on the cakes because I’ve seen Garfield and Odie not only drink paint, but consume an entire package of water balloons before I could stop them. So it seemed like an organic/GMO debate wasn’t an issue.
I laughed until tears streamed down my face. Goats eating cake is just a wonderful thing to see. I gave the kids the task of frosting the cakes, which they took very seriously. I mean, come on, we’re trying to impress goats here! First we walked down to Garfield and Odie’s zone and sang “Happy Birthday.” This seemed to confuse them, but they went along with it. Once we went inside their enclosure, Garfield and Odie began eating immediately. The whole party was hilarious. I laughed until tears streamed down my face. Goats eating cake is just a wonderful thing to see. My eldest son Buck even loved it, and he’s not
At one point, my youngest son, August, and daughter, Emerson, started running with the cakes when they both simultaneously fell, landing chest first on the cakes. The goats wandered over and continued eating like nothing unusual had happened. Well, I guess at some point during the party, humans fall on the cakes. That makes total sense to us. Then, much to my surprise, Garfield and Odie didn’t finish the cakes. About halfway through they stopped eating and wandered over to a bush to munch on it. At a goat birthday party, it seems the salad course is last. Of course, the fact that goats had already eaten part of a cake that had already fallen on the ground didn’t stop Emerson (who has the biggest sweet tooth in our family) from sampling it. All in all, the party was a big hit. I think for their next birthday we’ll go bigger—hats, balloons, presents. Maybe we’ll even rent a bouncy house. I know on the side of those bouncy houses it says “no shoes.” Does it also say “no goats”? If it doesn’t, I’m totally going to plead ignorance.
