1.Who was the king when Arbury Hall was built?

Henry II. He was king from 1154 to 1189. Arbury Hall was built in his reign, somewhere in the 12th century.

2. What was

it originally built as?

It was originally built as a monastery. In 1748 Sir Roger Newdigate redecorated it into a Gothic style Estate. He owned it until his death. Arbury Hall has been passed on through generations and generations since.

3. Who owned it during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I?

Edmund Anderson, who was a lawyer, bought the estate. He totally changed the look of the building, transforming it into a Elizabethan building, rather than a Gothic one.

4. Why did the owner swap it in 1586? Edmund Anderson (the owner of Arbury hall) swapped it in 1586, because he found it too far from London. He exchanged it for Harefield Place, Middlesex, all the property of John Newdegate.

5. What is the name of the family who have owned it since then?

Ever since, it has been the Newdigate family home. The Estate was eventually inherited by Sir Francis Newdigate. Newdegate, who was succeeded by his elder daughter, who in 1950 passed it over to her son Humphrey FitzRoy Newdegate.

7. Who lives there now? Now it is a family home to Viscount and Viscountess Daventry along with their three children: Humphrey (14), Hester (12) and Sophia (9). They have lived there for ten years in which they have helped our school in many ways (including donating a Christmas tree yearly and opening the tranquillity garden usage.) The house has been past down through generations of the Newdigate and Daventry family – the next person in line for the ownership of Arbury Hall to be Humphrey (Viscount Daventry’s oldest son).

9. Which famous writer lived there? George Eliot (Formally known as Mary Ann Evans) lived and was born on the Arbury estate. Her date of birth was 22nd November 1819 and died 22nd December 1880. She wrote books under the name George Eliot- since back then women weren't allowed to do what was considered ‘male’ jobs. She lived on the estate because her father worked there as a land agent. She wrote a book about the interior of Arbury hall called ‘Mr Gilfil’s Love story.’

13. What would you find in the grounds? On the impressive grounds of Arbury Hall could find a whole variety of things such as: a lake, many trees, lots of plantations, a rose garden and yew hedges.

14. What was the park used as during WW2? In the duration of WW2, Arbury Hall was used to hold the prisoners of War.

How does the family raise money to pay for the parks upkeep? By having the visitors pay a small fee, the Daventry family can pay for the park’s upkeep. Gardening, Cleaning, Cooks and much more all needs to be paid for.
