Asweobserveour35th anniversarythisyear,ASafePlacelooksback to its beginningswhen five womenlawyersformedtheNantucket Women’sBarAssociationwiththetoppriorityofsettinguparapeand abusenetwork andan advisoryboard.
Sarah Alger, Julie Fitzgerald, Sara Greenberg, Melissa Philbrick,and RhodaWeinman scheduledtheirfirstpublicmeeting onFebruary17,1987,withanagendaformedbytheirownexperiences, whichWeinmandescribesashavingnowheretosendclientswhohad experienceddomesticviolenceorsexualassault.
ASafePlacein2022salutesthesefoundingwomenfortakingaction toaddressthecontinuingseriousproblemofdomesticviolenceandsexual assaultonNantucket.Manyislanders,servingasdirectors,staff,and volunteers,havefollowedintheirfootsteps.Thankstotheirefforts,35 years latertheorganization has astrongpresenceontheislandand offers an expanding rangeofbothsupportive andpreventativeprograms andservicestoallmembersoftheNantucketcommunity.

Itishardtobelieve35yearshavepassed sinceourfoundersputtogetherthe frameworkto createASafePlace. Their vision backin 1987setus onapathtoserve thosedealingwithdomesticviolenceand sexualassault.Unfortunately,alltheseyears laterthereisstillworktobedone.
Thankstothegenerosityofthoselistedin thisreport,andthethousandsalongthe way,wehavebeenabletocontinuetowork withsurvivorsandvictimstoeliminatedomesticviolenceandsexual assaultintheNantucketcommunitywhileempoweringeverywoman, manandchildtolivealifefreefromviolence.
Withtherecentincreaseinneed,wehavebeenabletoaddnew programsandservicesinthesechangingtimes.Wehavepartnered withafamilycourtattorneywhoisprovidinglegalservicesforour clients; weareofferingmoreprogramsin our schools, rental andfood assistanceprograms, as wellas retainingallofourtried andtrue services,victimcounselingandadvocacy.
Thisyear wewere abletoincreasethefundingofallofour programs andservicesthanksinpartto ourtwosuccessfulfundraisingevents: oursummereventswithElizabethSmartandourOctoberWalkAMile forASafePlace.WealsohadanotheroutstandingAnnualAppealin NovemberandDecember.Wearesogratefulforallournewdonorsas wellasourloyallong-timedonors,bothlocalandseasonal,fortheir valuablesupport.
So 35years after ourfounders imaginedASafe Place,withthehelpof the generousNantucketcommunity, wearestillgoingstrong and continuingtheir visiontowork withvictims andsurvivorsofdomestic violenceandsexualassaulthereonNantucketwithallservices providedabsolutelyfreeofcharge.

I amexcitedto sharewhatamomentous yearthis isfor A Safe Place. Asan organizationwearecurrentlycelebrating our 35th anniversaryofbeinginoperation. Additionally,I am proudtosaythatAugust justmarkedmy15th anniversaryworking tosupportsurvivorsthrough this wonderful organization.Ihaveheldmultipleroles withinASafePlaceandhaveseen tremendousgrowthintheprograms, services,andstaffinglevelsprovidedto the community. In reflection, I never thought I wouldbeworkingherefor thislengthof time,butthemission reallybecameahuge partofwhoI am and,thus, kept meworking to supportsurvivors,the staffteam,andtheoverall organization. We have new dreamsfor A Safe Place,andIam excitedto continueworkingon these dreamsfor manyyears to come.
Iwantto thankyouforbeingapartofourpastandhopethatyouwill staybyour side movingintothefuture. We have comealongway, but westillhavealotofworkaheadofus.Sincethepandemicbegan,our numbershavecontinuedtoriseintermsofthenumberofsurvivorsthat we haveserved.In fact,wehaveseen a12%increaseinourTrauma Therapyprogramincomparison tolastyear,a25-30%increaseinboth our Domestic ViolenceandRapeCrisisprogramsthat hasremainedat thisheightenedlevelsincebeforeCOVID,andmorethan150%increase inourSupervisedVisitationprogramsincelastyear.Thisisalarming, butwe are happythatourservices existandthatwe have beenableto meetthisincreasedneed.
