BOARD CHAIR REPORT
Robert A. Greenspon For over I80 years this wonderful institution has represented the best of American democratic values and traditions. A welcoming presence for all, warm in the winter and cool in the summer, the Atheneum has been the place where our community comes to expand their knowledge to satisfy curiosities to discuss and debate topics of all sizes and shapes—from matters of pure locaI importance to issues of national and internat1onal scope. The Atheneum is where our community comes—without charge—to access the world beyond Nantucket and to have fun (who doesn’t love the Turkey Plunge) and expert guidance along the way.
Thought leadership We are the place to engage with great writers, journalists, health care experts, young people dedicated to improving living conditions in Africa, experts in robotics, food and nutrition, Alzheimer’s, childhood allergies, venture capital, water and global warming, presidential politics, cartooning—you name it. Our Geschke Lecture series and authors’ talks are wonderful opportunities for our sophisticated audiences to dive deeply into topics of great importance. And please don’t forget that your Atheneum has hosted the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Thoreau and Frederick Douglass when you next visit our historic Great Hall.
Improving lives and strengthening our community Please stop by and visit our Weezie Children’s library where you will see firsthand the exuberance of young folks beginning their reading lives as well as the relief on the faces of moms and dads when they leave with an armload of books and DVDs on a rainy day. Our endowed Adult Literacy program is where the immensely important job of teaching English as a second language is tackled Annual | 3 | Report
with enthusiasm and pride. And how about all the other 1,300 programs that are simply too numerous to mention here? Or maybe you’d prefer a quiet moment to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of our garden? Take your pick—it’s free.
The Atheneum Dance Festival: Our Major Fundraiser Each July about 20 of the world’s best dancers and musicians come to our island. That’s right, these young men and women are the cream of the crop of the very best dance companies in New York, London, Paris, Miami, and San Francisco and they all say their week at the Dance Festival is their best gig each year. The festival culminates with two sublime performances on Friday and Saturday nights, but during the week there are free workshops for our younger dancers and behind-the-scenes tutorials that provide tantalizing glimpses into the extraordinary artistic efforts—choreography, music, athleticism, pure hard physical work—involved in producing dance at the highest level. A shout out to Cathy Weinroth and her Festival committees for making this complicated set of logistics come together with apparent ease.
The Atheneum has never been stronger Each year our Executive Director Molly Anderson, her staff and our stellar and accomplished board of directors are charged with an ambitious and somewhat daunting task: to keep the forward momentum of the institution going full steam, to find ways to improve on our delivery of services and programs and to raise privately 75% of our budget. Those of you who know the Atheneum will remember that unlike most public libraries, we are privately owned and unique in that we must raise most of our budget from our friends and supporters. Happily, thankfully, I have the most pleasant opportunity to proudly report that we—with your gracious and generous support — have once again met this challenge. Annual | 4 | Report
Here’s some impressive financial food for thought: in the last 15 years the Atheneum has increased its cash and investments ten-fold. That’s an impressive strengthening of our resources by any measure, and I’d like to think that it is a testament to the great work that Molly and our staff and board do to make the Atheneum relevant and essential to our community. Molly and David Ross, our treasurer, run a tight ship. We operate year in and year out with a balanced budget and our endowment is managed in a prudent and responsible way. Our board is engaged and tireless and fervent in their love for the Atheneum. Our fund raising is led by our director of development, Maggie O’Reilly and her staff and by Joan Gulley who chairs our development committee. We are indebted to their hard work and professionalism. We have improved our development tools and our utilizing state of the art software to improve our ability to reach our friends and sponsors efficiently as well as to engage in the essential cultivation of new friends. We need to be engaged with the next generation and have improved our social media presence and website to make sure that we are accessible and that our profile and role in providing essential services to the community is clear and compelling.
Our challenge The Atheneum is at a historic level of strength and vibrancy because you have embraced our mission and have recognized that your investments in the Atheneum are investments in the broad Nantucket community. As a bonus you are also investing in the finest traditions of American democracy; you are supporting a critically important institution that is free and open to all. With your help our goal and challenge is to insure that the Atheneum is as strong or stronger in 25 years; that the Atheneum of our children and grandchildren (and their children) is even more robustly glorious in year 2042 than it is today. We are most grateful, thank you. Annual | 5 | Report
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR REPORT
Molly Anderson Winter on Nantucket offers a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the past year. A frequent question often heard on island is – “What makes living on Nantucket so special?” And if one queries our staff and patrons a consistent thread runs through their responses: Nantucket is special not only because of its radiant natural beauty and fascinating history but also because our community has a strong set of shared values. Nantucket is a place where connections run deep, people feel safe and care about each other, diversity is celebrated, educational opportunities thrive, the past is treasured and the future beckons with possibility. The Atheneum has a vital role to play in sustaining and supporting these values. Our library, open six days per week and year round, holds our community together by fusing people and knowledge, filling community lives with opportunities to learn and grow, putting people in touch with our past and exciting them about creativity and the latest innovations. The Atheneum strengthens community connections through formal collaborations with other island organizations in our adult and youth programming, through our free meeting spaces fostering civic dialogue and through daily informal conversations taking place in our iconic building and garden. The Atheneum is a safe place for our newest community members to learn the English Language and a place where diverse views can be explored and shared respectfully. The Atheneum continues to expand services to the Nantucket community while operating within a balanced Operating Budget. Operating Expenses were held to 1% year-over-year growth, far below the Nantucket inflation rate. Operating Revenues from External Sources increased by $27,000 or 1.1% as a result of a 20% increase in our Endowment Draw offset by small reductions in our Events Draw and Contributions. Once again our single largest source of funding was the contribution from the Town of Nantucket, which accounted for 29% of our Operating Revenue. Donors to our Turkey Plunge, Dance Festival and Annual Giving campaign contribute the additional operating revenue. The increased Endowment draw should continue since it is based on a trailing threeyear average of The Atheneum’s long-term investment portfolio, which has increased Annual | 8 | Report

substantially over recent years as a result of donor contributions to our Sustaining the Atheneum (SAF) campaign as well as strong equity market returns. Assets released from restrictions increased substantially from the prior year as funds from the SAF campaign began to become available to support the Atheneum’s infrastructure. In addition to regular maintenance, a new audiovisual system was installed in the Great Hall and new security cameras were installed throughout the building. The Balance Sheet continued to strengthen in 2017 as we collected remaining campaign pledges and enjoyed a strong 17% net return from our investment in low-cost index funds. Importantly, Cash and Investments increased 13.7% to $19.5 million. All this was made possible by our dedicated and talented staff as well as the generous support of our many donors. ADULT PROGRAMS In addition, the library was pleased to partner with other institutions on community sessions including Addiction Panel for Families with the Alliance for Substance Abuse and Prevention; Narcan Training with Fairwinds Counseling Center; Nantucket Nature Stories with Linda Loring Nature Foundation; Staged Readings with Theatre Workshop of Nantucket; Co-Working Space with Young Creatives; Transcendent Yoga with Dharma Yoga; Film Series on Wellness with Nantucket Network of Wellbeing. The island-wide reading project One Book One Island selected Elephant Company by Victoria Constantine Croke, and distributed 500 free copies of the book around the island during the winter. In March, the committee, which is made up of representatives from 20 island nonprofits (including the Atheneum) and businesses, produced 12 events related to the book between March 10 and March 19. The Atheneum’s English Language Learning program staffed by the Literacy Volunteers of the Atheneum celebrated its twelfth year at the Atheneum in 2017. The popular program continued to offer for adult students free weekly conversational classes at beginner and advanced levels on Wednesday mornings and Thursday evenings and individual tutoring sessions for all students wishing to improve their English language learning skills. This year 191 adult learners participated in classroom sessions or worked with one of the LVA’s 51 volunteer tutors. Finally, the Atheneum provided meeting rooms for civic and community engagement as well as for study space for patrons in need of a quiet place to work. These rooms were used 2,000 times in 2017.

Last year, we began participating in the VITAL (visually impaired technology assistance at the library) program. For eligible patrons, we are happy to curate reading requests, and download them to a digital cassette, which is brought to the doorstep via our “Atheneum to Go” homebound delivery service. Once again, we sincerely thank our dedicated Circulation volunteers, who generously give of their time and effort throughout the year. Whether delivering books to the homebound or shelving physical items, they play a vital role in our smooth operation.

REFERENCE DEPARTMENT The friendly faces you see in the Great Hall belong to the Reference and Special Collections Department staff who provide a variety of services to the Nantucket community. They are responsible for each step in getting reference resources from across the country. The Reference staff answered more than 4,500 reference questions and obtained and sent 231 specialized journal articles, book, and videos for researchers in 2017. Surprisingly, the single most circulated nonbook item to our patrons was our charging adapters for any electronic devices. Our department is not only a place where community members have access to the Internet, it is a place where people can get training to be successful digital citizens. Teaching technology literacy has become absolutely necessary as critical interactions between citizens and employers or government agencies take place electronically. To this end, we renewed our subscription to Lynda.com for detailed online technology education and answered technical reference questions each day. The library staff will continue to meet our mission of ensuring that everyone in our community has access to computers, the Internet and digital literacy training.

children and teens. Staff continued to collaborate with community partners such as the Nantucket Public Schools, Nantucket Boys & Girls Club, and The Community School to bring Atheneum programming to a wider audience. Over 700 NES students and faculty were treated to a performance of Cinderella by the Tanglewood Marionettes in May. When children visited Weezie they found a richly varied collection including 17,593 books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines for children and 3,521 items for young adults. Over 1,600 children and teens participated in our Summer Reading Program “Build a Better World” and again included sign ups at Nantucket Elementary School, The Nantucket New School, The Nantucket Lighthouse School, and eight independent preschools. DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT The Development Department continued to raise increased support through the generosity and interest of the community. The 2017 Annual Giving Campaign raised over $495,000 under the skilled leadership of Board of Trustee member Joan Gulley. The 15th Annual Cold Turkey Plunge held on November 24, 2016 resulted in more than 1,000 people taking the plunge with $110,000 raised in support of programs and services for the Weezie Library for Children. The library ran three used book sales in FY17 with the help of our many dedicated volunteers. The annual summer book sale took place in August 2016 followed by another during Stroll Weekend 2016 and the final sale was over Daffodil Weekend 2017. The Atheneum’s major fundraiser, the Nantucket Atheneum Dance Festival, which ran from July 24 – 29, 2017, held two performances at the Nantucket High School auditorium. The performances featured internationally acclaimed dancers from New York City Ballet, Miami City Ballet and Boston Ballet under Artistic Director Tyler Angle. Outreach events included a children’s program, youth master classes for aspiring dance students, a documentary film screening of Benjamin Millepied’s Reset and an insightful lecture/demonstration led by Artistic Director Tyler Angle. Under the skilled leadership of our Dance Chair Cathy Weinroth and with corporate sponsorship from Northern Trust, Tervis and Tradewind Aviation, the festival raised much needed revenue to support the Atheneum’s annual operating budget.

BUILDING & GROUNDS Several improvements were made to the interior and exterior of our historic Atheneum building throughout 2017. Excitement surrounded preparation of the Great Hall for installation of an integrated media presentation system. Projection, sound and lighting controls are now positioned in a central location enhancing the presentation of films, author talks, panel discussions, and musical performances. New equipment includes a ceiling projector and large projection screen, blu-ray disc player, wall mounted speakers, amplifier and subwoofer, wired and wireless microphones, a designated computer, and media presentation controller. Additionally, a subscription for cable television was purchased. For the safety of patrons and of the Atheneum’s collections, 15 Infrared security cameras and a recording system were installed throughout the building. Sprinkler heads in Great Hall were replaced to keep current with Fire Code and a coupling replaced on a dry pipe in the attic. A plumbed Bottle Filling Station/Water Cooler was installed on the ground floor for patron and staff use, reducing the number of disposable cups used. Yearly maintenance of the building included areas of interior walls painted, Oriental carpets and stairwell carpets cleaned, and Windsor chairs repaired. LED light fixtures were installed and old, stained ceiling tiles replaced for the downstairs Workroom and the Children’s office. A security keypad was replaced. Exterior maintenance included seeding the grass and washing dirt and mildew from the perimeter fence. The conference phone was replaced as well as six hard drives with an upgrade to Office 2010 for staff in Circulation, Children’s, Adult Programs, and Administration. Library furnishings included three ergonomic desk chairs for Children’s, Young Adult, and Reference. This was the first of a multi-year art conservation project to refurbish a portion of the Atheneum’s collection of oil paintings and frames. In a previous review by an art conservator, fifteen paintings were identified as in priority need of conservation treatment. In 2017 Maria Mitchell and Main Street received treatment.
