The Community Foundation for Nantucket has grown dramatically, especially in the past three years. Beginning twelve years ago as a grass roots organization, today our funds under management exceed $9 million and grants from these funds in 2018 totaled over $3.2 million. We have seen growth in all areas – total assets under management, number of funds and most importantly, grants awarded through those charitable funds each year. This growth has been due in large part to our investment in our operational team, made possible through the support of our growing ranks of annual donors. While grantmaking remains our primary focus, we are equally proud that we convene community stakeholders regularly to address areas of Island-wide concern. Specifically in the areas of housing and elders, the Foundation has coordinated conversations about where our grant making dollars could effect the most change. This led to Nantucket Fund support for Workforce Housing and Elder Needs Assessment studies, which have proven critical to the onset of real change in those areas. This highlights the added value we bring to our community. Our strategic initiative to endow the Nantucket Fund began in July 2018. Through generous matching gifts, we have grown this fund from a modest sum to over $3 million in only a few months and our efforts continue with a near-term goal of $5 million. The Nantucket Fund is a permanent endowment for our Island and our annual grant making is well established as a critical support mechanism for Nantucket’s vital Nonprofit Community.

The generosity of the Nantucket community astounds us, and we are heartened by your confidence in us as we continue to address the most pressing needs in the community for both today and tomorrow. We hope you will support the Community Foundation – together we can make a difference. With our gratitude,

Nantucket Fund Grants In 2018, the Community Foundation awarded $177,520 in Nantucket Fund grants to 26 Nantucket Nonprofits, reflecting the Foundation’s commitment to affordable housing initiatives, behavioral health, child enrichment, education, health, diversity, and elder well-being.
“A 12-year old girl who recently arrived on Nantucket from El Salvador joined us at the club. She didn’t know anyone and was very shy. The Art Room became her refuge and she thrived because she could express herself through art projects. She now participates in art classes at the Artists Association as well. We are so grateful that the Nantucket Fund supports both NBGC Art Programs and the collaborative programs between the AAN and NBGC.” ~ Phyllis McInerney, Nantucket Boys and Girls Club
“The Summer Boost program, which was funded by the Nantucket Fund, brought to us a child who had suffered significant trauma. Simply stepping on the school bus was too overwhelming and frightening for this student. Summer Boost helped him feel safe in the school and develop friendships with his peers ….” ~ Pauline Cronin, Nantucket Community School
“In November 2018, we had a new mother, her partner, and their five-day old baby come to a parenting class. Both parents are in their early 20’s and local Nantucketers. After class our Young Parents Coordinator conducted an intake with them for our home visiting and WIC nutrition programs, all of which are supported by a Nantucket Fund grant. The new parents continue to receive benefits to ensure their long-term success.”
“A 35 year resident of Nantucket suffered a major accident when he fell down the ladder of a widow's walk. His workers comp policy would not pay for his injury as the work he was doing was not covered by his policy. Nantucket Food Fuel and Rental Assistance helped pay his rent during the period of recuperation using a Nantucket Fund grant.”

The Community Foundation was honored to work with the Fee Family to establish the Henry W. Fee, Jr. Memorial Scholarship. As a small business owner, Henry’s talents shone. His friendliness, entrepreneurial spirit, work ethic, and immense generosity had an indelible and profound impact on everyone he met. This scholarship hopes to encourage the next generation to smile, work hard and help others, making the entire island better through their efforts. Like Henry did.

NCH Community Health Initiative The Community Foundation partners with Nantucket Cottage Hospital to assist with this incredible community initiative. This year’s awards are the second in a series of grant cycles that will ultimately invest more than $4 million to improve the health and wellbeing of the Island. The hospital sought proposals in four areas: Behavioral Health; Women’s and Children’s Health; Access to Healthcare; and Access to Housing.
“For the past few years I’ve seen many good people leave the island because of the housing crisis. I was fortunate enough to receive closing cost assistance thanks to a Hospital grant. My hope is that these types of programs and collaborations keep expanding and continue to serve those who work and want to live here year round.” ~ A Nantucket Homeowner who received Closing Cost Assistance through the Affordable Housing Trust Fund
"The creation of the Discovery Playground thanks to NCH Grant, is vision and action at its finest. The partnerships and collaborations that have formed since the initial conception of this project are real life examples of Nantucket’s minds and hearts working in tandem for an increased quality of life for all residents.”

“Pop-Up science, funded through the ReMain Nantucket Fund, brought science to the streets of Nantucket and asked by-passers to think about physics, natural science, our impact on the environment, aerodynamics, magnetism, and so much more. The Pop-Up science cart brought an excitement for science through the town of Nantucket to people of all ages” ~ Shelley Dresser, Maria Mitchel Association
The ReMain Nantucket Fund provides grants to Nantucket nonprofits. ReMain’s charitable activity helps to envision and empower a prosperous future for the heart of Nantucket – tapping the Island’s extraordinary resources: its people and strong tradition of independence, innovation, and conservation.
“The ReMain Nantucket Fund was the very first funder that came on board to support the 2019 Cinema Sarah Lawrence island film intensive. With ReMain support, we were able to commit to fourteen weeks on Nantucket with 35 students from a dozen colleges – fully living, learning, and working in a campus-like downtown environment.” ~ Jay Craven, Kingdom County Productions

Nantucket Nonprofit Leadership Conference
Scholarships
On Wednesday, September 26th, 135 of Nantucket’s nonprofit leaders, representing 45 Island charities joined the Community Foundation for Nantucket for the first annual Nantucket Nonprofit Leadership Conference. Thanks to the vision and generosity of a CFN benefactor, the Foundation was able to offer our Island nonprofit leadership teams and board members a full day workshop. Participants were able to learn from experts in the field on topics that included Strategic Planning, Board Development, Outcomes Based Planning and Nonprofit Finances. The Foundation is looking forward to next year’s conference in September.
We Have Moved!
The Community Foundation is honored to have a variety of scholarship funds established by individuals and groups of donors for the purpose of helping younger generations of Nantucketers further their education. In 2018 the Foundation awarded $56,000 in community scholarships to 26 local students pursuing higher education.
In April of 2019, the Community Foundation for Nantucket moved into its permanent home at 9B Bayberry Court. We are thrilled to be settling into our new dignified office and are so grateful to everyone, especially our contractor, Rob Reid, for helping us along the way. Next time you are mid-Island, please stop by and say hello! We would love to give you a tour. 19

Planned Giving:
Ways to support the Community Foundation through Estate Planning
Bequests Name the Community Foundation in your will, trust, life insurance policy, or retirement plan.
Charitable Gift Annuity Make a sizeable give to the Community Foundation using cash, securities, or other assets, guaranteeing lifetime income to yourself, while supporting the Community Foundation into the future.
Charitable Remainder Trust Create an irrevocable charitable remainder trust that generates an income stream for you, with the remainder of the donated assets going to the Community Foundation and other beneficiaries upon your death.
Anne Olsen is a retired CPA from Charleston, SC who spends her summers on Nantucket. When planning her estate, Anne opened a Donor Advised Fund with the Community Foundation and directed a bequest to this fund upon her death. She can now enjoy retirement, knowing that she and her children will be making a difference on Nantucket for years to come. 23
Welcoming our new Trustees! In 2018, we welcomed five new Trustees as part of our mission to recruit active and insightful community leaders to our Board.
Marc Feigen is an expert in CEO performance and governance. He is the CEO and Founder of Feigen Advisers and IR Hercules, a software tool for CEOs. As an expert in the areas of corporate growth, performance and governance, Marc has appeared on CBS, and has published articles in the Wall Street Journal, the Harvard Business Review, USA Today, and Directors and Boards. He lives in New York City with his wife and two daughters.
Kevin Marshall has been employed with the Nantucket Police Department for the past fifteen years and was promoted to Patrol Sargent in 2008. Along with his regular duties as Patrol Sergeant, at the direction of the Chief, Kevin is assigned to oversee and direct myriad programs such as the: Crime Prevention Unit, Community Service Section, School Resource Officer Program, Elder Affairs, Bicycle Safety, Honor Guard and is the Coordinator for the Volunteer in Police Service Program (V.I.P.S.). Kevin and his partner John reside on Nantucket year round.
Rev. Linda Simmons went to Harvard Divinity School in 2008, after a career with a nonprofit funded by the Department of Labor helping youth who had dropped out of high school get GEDs and jobs. Through some grace and good luck, the stunning Unitarian Universalist church full of whole hearted people on Nantucket Island chose her to be their minister in 2013, the year she graduated from Harvard Divinity School. She’s been here ever since.
Christine Vineis (Chris) has spent her career in public affairs in Washington, DC, New York City and Columbus, Ohio. On Nantucket, Chris is a board member of the Nantucket Education Trust, development chair of the Nantucket Book Festival Committee and loves volunteering with kindergartners at the Nantucket Elementary School.
Finn Wentworth is an investor in businesses that have included commercial real estate, media and sports ventures. A philanthropist and community improvement activist, Finn has served in leadership positions on several nonprofit organization boards in the New York Metropolitan area and on Nantucket.
