FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT As the incoming President, I am honored to follow the extraordinary women who have guided this organization for the past 35 years. A Safe Place has been fortunate to have had board members who have led with dedication and passion. A Safe Place is not a large nonprofit compared to others on the island, but its impact is enormous within the Nantucket community and beyond. All our programs and services are available at no cost to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. This is possible because of YOU – your belief in our mission, your generosity and your ongoing support. Our mission is always front and center. In the past year, this was reflected in the almost 3,000 individual sessions of services provided to survivors, the 2,000 warm meals served to families in crisis, and the 1,200 Nantucket students who received prevention education. These are but a few examples of what our dedicated staff has done to live out our mission. Because we operate in a fiscal year rather than a calendar year, our summer fundraiser showcased in this report is from last summer. I would also like to mention and thank our many supporters of this summer’s fundraiser. We tried something different and transitioned to an evening event featuring Dr. Jackson Katz, who is a leader in the field of prevention of gender-based violence and who advocates for cultural change and male leadership in bringing this about. The message was well received, and the event was a great success. Looking forward, we will continue to focus on empowering survivors, building awareness, and providing education within the community. We are very grateful to each and every one of you who enable us to continue our critically important mission. Sincerely, Jane Loose

FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR I write today with profound appreciation for every single person who contributes to the mission of A Safe Place. We depend on you, our friends and supporters who play such an important role in helping us provide critical services to the community. We could not do this work without our individual donors, foundations, and local and state contract providers. Nor could we do this work without our volunteers, community collaborators, and in-kind donors. Thank you. Because of you, A Safe Place had a year of great successes. We provided services completely free of charge to 337 survivors and their non-offending family members, provided more financial assistance to survivors in need than ever before, increased the number of survivors who received family court legal services through our partnership with Attorney Lauren Klein, and expanded our outreach and youth prevention programming within the community. Moving forward, we continue to have big dreams for A Safe Place. It is no secret that our small office is bursting at the seams, and we are in search of a more suitable location---one that will allow us to meet confidentially with multiple survivors at one time and provide in-house prevention education. We know the search for office space and commercial land is a needle-in-the-haystack endeavor, but I hope putting this need out into the world will help make this dream come true. Thank you for being there for us last year. I look forward to our continued partnership. With gratitude, Jennifer Frazee
SURVIVOR PROGRAMS FREE AND CONFIDENTIAL Domestic Violence Advocates are available around the clock to answer our 24-hour hotline, provide crisis support as requested at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and assist with restraining orders at the Nantucket Police Department and courthouse. Depending on specific client needs, our services can include providing basic emotional support and individual or group counseling, supplying items such as food and clothing and, in extremely high-risk situations, making safe home arrangements for survivors as part of an exit plan.
Rape Crisis Trained Rape Crisis Counselors (RCCs) are available 24 hours a day to provide support and resources no matter when an assault occurred. Our RCCs offer in-person support and advocacy at Nantucket Cottage Hospital for survivors undergoing medical exams in the aftermath of sexual assault, provide on-going support and counseling (individual or group sessions) to survivors and their family/friends, and are available for continued support for survivors who enter civil or criminal court proceedings.
Trauma Therapy A Safe Place's trauma therapy program is designed to improve the coordination of and access to services for persons who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, exploitation, and/or have been a witness to violence. Trauma therapy services include, but are not limited to, mental health assessments, individual and group trauma therapy, advocacy, partnering with additional resources for case management, and facilitating referrals to other providers on and off the island as needed.
SURVIVOR PROGRAMS FREE AND CONFIDENTIAL Supervised Visitation The Supervised Visitation Program provides a secure and comfortable environment for children to maintain a relationship with both parents while attempting to isolate them from conflict. A Safe Place offers a neutral environment for custody exchanges that prevents direct contact between parents/guardians, or the supervision of an entire visit between a child and a non-custodial parent or relative, where they can interact in a comfortable playroom setting while the visit is monitored by trained staff and on-site security.
Child Witness to Violence Licensed clinicians support children and teens who have experienced or been witness to domestic, sexual or community violence, through individual and group counseling. Additionally, we currently run a youth sports and social skills group designed to improve peer relationships and teach interpersonal interaction skills that facilitate success in both the classroom and home settings. This program promotes confidence, organization, managing of emotions, healthy decision making, executive functioning, and improved peer relationships.
PREVENTION EDUCATION Youth Programs A Safe Place has provided prevention education programs to Nantucket youth for over thirty years. Our programs are designed around age-appropriate information and skill building tools for children in grades 3 through 12.
Classroom Education A Safe Place developed and led: A two-session program at the Nantucket Intermediate School (5th grade level) and the Nantucket New School (5th and 6th grade levels) focused on boundaries, consent, harassment, and bullying. A multi-session unit at Nantucket High School (9th grade level) focused on consent, sexual assault and prevention.
Date Smart Program A Safe Place led the Date Smart Program for members of the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club in grades 6 through 8. This ten-week program allowed students to examine their feelings about dating and relationships while being encouraged to become peer and community advocates for healthy relationships based on equality and respect.
PREVENTION EDUCATION Safe Home Project Nantucket Boys & Girls Club members participated in A Safe Place's annual Safe Home Project and learned about healthy relationships, non-violence, and respect for others while creating homes via the use of artistic models.
Safety Cape Project Nantucket Boys & Girls Club members participated in A Safe Place’s Safety Cape Project where they created their own super hero capes and used imagination, out of the box thinking, and creativity while learning about safety and surroundings.
Happy Family Poster Contest Nantucket Boys & Girls Club members took part in a family focused poster contest celebrating healthy families and foundations. Children created artwork showcasing happy and healthy family moments for A Safe Place’s Supervised Visitation Center. The artwork was entered into the contest by grade level.
Thank you to our community partners who make this programming possible:
Nantucket Intermediate School Cyrus Peirce Middle School Nantucket High School Nantucket New School Nantucket Boys & Girls Club
COMMUNITY OUTREACH A Safe Place's outreach activities are primarily designed to inform community members of available services, raise awareness and knowledge of sexual assault and domestic violence and create community contacts for future collaborations and access.
Pop-Up Fridays A Safe Place is expanding visibility within the community with our educational tables around the island. Pop-Up Friday tables encourage community connection and involvement. Stop by to learn more about our services or inquire about our impact.

SUMMER FUNDRAISER LUNCHEON
Drea Kelly July 2022
In 2022, A Safe Place welcomed domestic violence survivor and advocate Drea Kelly to the White Elephant Resort for our summer luncheon event. Drea is a dancer, choreographer, and actress and the former wife of R&B singer R. Kelly. She gave an emotional and moving account of what it was like to leave her abuser almost twenty years ago. With three small children in tow, Drea fled with only $2,500 in funds and a duffle bag of necessities. Her story humanized how the words "just leave" are far more complicated than they seem when it comes to leaving an abusive relationship. Survivors fleeing abuse often don't have the financial means to leave, the resources and support to aid them, or a new place to call home. The takeaway: the reality of leaving is just not that simple.
