The year 2020 was a year like no other in many, many ways, but in one critical way, it remained exactly the same — the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club served the community of Nantucket day in and day out. We are grateful to be reflecting upon 2020 from a more hopeful place. During the height of the pandemic, the Club offered seamless services to members, parents and the community; and the staff was a beacon of light to many. In addition to serving over 5,000 emergency meals to local families in conjunction with the Community Foundation of Nantucket, Breeze @ The Nantucket Hotel, Fusaro’s and Crosswinds restaurants, the Club offered 11 virtual programs when schools closed in March, opened for summer camp with over 100 youth members, resumed Club activities in the fall with extended school hours, and successfully navigated the late fall spike on the Island with carefully planned athletics and small group programming. At a time when children and families needed us the most, the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club was there. However, we could not have successfully navigated last year without your support. Our partners, donors, trustees and many community members were our backbone, and you allowed us to weather the emotional and financial toll of the pandemic. The Island is stronger because of you. Thank you for your continued support. The year 2020 was also a year of the passing of the torch. After 17 wonderful years, Phyllis McInerney retired at year’s end. Her leadership and careful planning continue to be demonstrated daily in the actions of the staff members she so dutifully nurtured and trained. We also managed to complete the construction of one new employee housing duplex next door to our main building—and for those who have attempted any project, big or small, last year, know what a feat that was! We are excited to continue to expand our employee housing project with two additional buildings being added over the next year. While the toll of the pandemic continues to be felt in our community, we remain hopeful. We are steadfast in our commitment to the Club’s mission and the people we serve. We know wholeheartedly that with your support, we can truly weather any challenges we may face. Sincerely,

Virtual Programs offered during school closure in March of 2020 During the unprecedented school closures in March of 2020, the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club immediately offered virtual programming to all of Nantucket’s school aged children, regardless of Club membership status. Virtual programs were designed with youth’s interests in mind, to keep them engaged through difficult times while providing access to materials. Virtual programming offered the Club an opportunity to collaborate with Island businesses and nonprofits to create pre packaged activity bags which were available for contactless pick up on the front porch of the Club. With new times, the Club found new and innovative ways to adapt while staying mission focused and putting Nantucket’s children first.

the arts The Arts Programs give our members the opportunity to creatively express themselves through various mediums. Along with daily arts and crafts, members are gaining knowledge about visual arts, performing arts and creative writing. Members showcase their talent throughout the school year and summer program.

The Health & Wellness Programs encourage members to make positive decisions that support their physical and personal wellbeing. From maintaining the Club garden and encouraging proper nutrition, these programs help Club kids see the value in making healthy life choices.

The Athletic Programs allow members to improve upon their overall fitness, develop skills to aid stress management, improve social skills through sports, and learn the importance of teamwork. We are proud to offer a large variety of athletic programs to our members throughout the year.
Sam Sylvia Pro Am Golf Tournament The Sam Sylvia Pro Am, typically held in June, was postponed until October due to COVID. While the morning started out a bit rainy, the spirits of the players were not dampened. The tournament was not only a great opportunity to raise money for the Club, but a welcome distraction from the pandemic, where participants could socially distance while still having fun. In 2020, the tournament sold out with 32 teams playing in foursomes and they were able to enjoy Club’s signature “comfort stations” set up along the course provided by our generous sponsors. | 12 |

Tim Russert Summer Groove The 2020 Summer Groove, an event that provides the majority of our fundraising revenue, was unable to take place in person due to COVID restrictions. However, our donors were more supportive than ever in this very different year. A video shown on August 22nd, produced by Yellow Productions and hosted by David Gregory, with special guests, Bill Belichick, Maureen Orth and Luke Russert, played an important role in showcasing all the Boys & Girls Club has to offer. We are grateful to all of our donors who stepped up to provide us with critical operating funds necessary for us to provide our important programs and services to the children of Nantucket. | 14 |

The Club Celebrates Our 75th Anniversary

Since opening our doors in 1945 the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club has been empowering the youth of Nantucket to reach their full potential. The history of the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club dates back to the end of World War I. The original Nantucket Boys Club was built on Francis Street, then in 1965 the current Sparks Avenue location was constructed. In 1975, girls were permitted to attend the Boys Club one day per week and in 1992, the name was officially changed to the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club. In 2015 the Club was expanded to a state of the art 30,000 square foot facility, and in 2020 employee housing units were constructed to provide much needed year round housing for a committed staff who is dedicated to the youth of Nantucket. Being tested in our 75th year with a worldwide pandemic was no exception, and the Club continued to adapt its role to the public and provide seamless services to the entire Nantucket community. In 2020, over 5,400 emergency meals were served, extended school hours were offered, $26,000 in scholarships were awarded and the Club remained open six days per week. Thank you for your support over the last 75 years, and we are looking forward to the next 75 years. | 17 |
