A casino with an eventful history Casinò Campione is one of just four casinos in Italy and ranks among the largest casinos in Europe. It is located on the shores of Lake Lugano in the Italian exclave of Campione d’Italia in Switzerland. Originally opened in 1917, at the height of the First World War, the casino was not only a welcome place for entertainment and distraction but quickly turned out to be an attractive environment for concealed espionage activities in an extraterritorial location and relaxed atmosphere. In 2007, following a major restructure and the construction of a brand-new building complex,

the casino reopened with a refreshed and modern aesthetic. The new building’s exceptional architecture was designed by Mario Botta, who created a contemporary and unique structure, comprising some 55,000 sqm with nine floors above ground, three underground parking floors as well as a total of 28 elevators and four escalators that connect the various areas. The municipality of Campione has always benefited from the casino as a major local economic player. Nonetheless, due to massive debts accumulated in previous years, the casino was declared bankrupt and closed on July 27 2018 – the closure hit the municipality hard, since the huge casino
