Gemmie, mascot of the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley, and the SPU’s cheerleading squad painted the city red on Monday, 3 February. This was to spread the word that the SPU has qualified, for the first time ever, to participate in the Varsity Shield tournament. Gemmie and the cheerleaders visited the Northern Cape and Diamantveld High School, as well as the Staats Primary School. Two parades through the streets also took place. The SPU’s first Varsity Shield game, against the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), takes place at the Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley on Friday, 14 February, at 17:00. Die vonnisoplegging van die sewe persone wat verlede week in die hooggeregshof in Kimberley afsonderlik of gesamentlik op verskeie aanklagte skuldig bevind is – sewe jaar en vier dae ná die aanval op Piet Els en sy vriendin – sal in die eerste week van Maart plaasvind.
Els (86), bekende sakeman in diamantkringe, en ’n vriendin is op 24 Januarie 2018 deur vier mans in sy slaapkamer in sy plaashuis buite die Diamanstad gemartel en aangerand. Kontant, munte, vuurwapens en ander besittings is gesteel. Els is 111 dae later aan sy kopbeserings oorlede.
Dit is onthul dat drie van die skuldiges voorheen gevonnis is weens aanklagte wat aanranding met die doel om ernstig te beseer en roof met verswarende omstandighede insluit.
Regter Lawrence Lever het bevind die beskuldigdes se weergawes en getuienis is oneerlik, ontwykend, teenstrydig en hoogs onwaarskynlik.
Uiteindelik het die oorlewende slagoffer se getuienis, asook selfoongetuienis, skoenafdrukke wat met spore op die toneel ooreenstem, en teenstrydige verklarings en ander getuienis hul
doppie geklink.
Die skuldiges is Morapeli Rankali (28) en Motlalentwa Qhautse (37), van Lesotho; Lizbeth Ndlala (56) en haar man, Themba Lawrence Maja (68), Oupa Jeffrey Mahomane (44), almal van Pienaar in Mpumalanga; Samson Sam Mbokane (63) van Mbombela in Mpumalanga; en Jabulani Zuma (62) van Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal.
Die staat het aangevoer drie verskillende groepe mense het saamgesweer en elkeen ’n spesifieke rol gespeel.
Zuma het glo van KwaZulu-Natal na Mbombela gery om Mbokane, Ndlala en Maja, tradisionele genesers, en Mahomane op te laai. Vandaar het hulle na die opperbrein, Amos Ralihlare, se huis in Galeshewe in Kimberley gery, twee dae voor die voorval. Ralihlare het nog drie Sotho-sprekende mans gekry om die aanval saam met Mahomane uit te voer.
Die nag van die voorval was daar vooraf, tydens en daarna gedurige onderlinge selfoonkommunikasie tussen Zuma, Mbokane, Maja, Ralihlare en Mahomane, en selfs maande daarna.
Regter Lever het bevind dat Rankali, by wie Els se gebreekte diamantring gevind is, geweet het dit is gesteel. ) Vervolg op bl. 2.

Qhautse het aan die polisie erken dat een paar tekkies aan hom behoort het en nooit aan die hof verduidelik hoekom sy tekkies se soolafdrukke op die toneel gevind is nie.
Ndlala, Maja en Mbokane het in verklarings gesê hulle weet van die tradisionele seremonie vir ’n rooftog, maar dit later ontken. Hul verduideliking dat hulle net spoke moes verjaag en munte opgrawe, dra geen water volgens die regter nie, want hulle het nie tydens hul besoek aan Kimberley vir iets gegrawe of “spoke verjaag” nie.
Die regter het bevind hulle is betaal ingevolge ’n ooreenkoms vir ’n ritueel vir die sukses van die rooftog. Mahomane het in die motor op pad terug na Mbombela vertel hoe die rooftog verloop het en vooraf geweet hulle kom om Krugermunte “van ’n wit man se plaas” te vat. Maja het aan die polisie erken hy het geweet Kruger-munte moes van ’n man tydens ’n rooftog gevat word.
Mbokane se verweer dat hulle net ’n seremonie moet uitvoer is verwerp weens die verdoemde getuienis teen hom.
Zuma se weergawe dat hy die helers as ’n guns na Kimberley en terug gebring het, is onwaar. Hy het die rooftog gereël, tydens die voorval om die misdaadtoneel beweeg en buit uitgedeel.
Tydens sy inhegtenisname het hy binnekennis oor Els se seuns met die polisie gedeel en ook gesê hy weet van die opperbrein
(Ralihlare) wat in Lesotho skuil. Zuma het die skuld op Mahomane probeer pak en van die verdoemende selfoongetuienis probeer wegkom deur te beweer hy het sy foon aan een van die Sotho-sprekende mans of Ralihlare geleen, of dit het weggeraak. In kruisondervraging was hy oneerlik en het bedekte dreigemente en beledigings gemaak. Later het hy selfs geweier om vrae te beantwoord.
Regter Lever het Rankali aan diefstal; Qhautse en Mahomane aan huisbraak en roof met gewelddadige omstandighede, seksuele aanranding en moord; en Ndlala, Maja, Mbokane en Zuma aan huisbraak en roof met gewelddadige omstandighede skuldig bevind.
Die staat het openbaar dat Qhautse vorige veroordelings het vir aanranding met die doel om ernstig te beseer, asook roof; en Mahomane vir aanranding met die doel om ernstig te beseer, roof, en diefstal.
Zuma se lys van veroordelings begin in 1982 met vyf aanklagte van diefstal en die onwettige besit van ’n vuurwapen; onwettige ontvang van geld in die gevangenes; roekelose bestuur in 1986; roof en die onwettige besit van ’n vuurwapen in 1987 en roof in 1999 waarvoor hy 25 jaar tronkstraf opgelê is. In 2000 is hy vir die onwettige besit van masjiengewere, mortiere en ’n vuurpyllanseerder gevonnis. Hy is in 2014 op parool vrygelaat, wat in 2037 verstryk. Die voorvonnisverhoor is tot 3 Maart uitgestel.
Defensor verloor aansoek

Die Defensor-sekuriteitsmaatskappy wat verdink word dat hy twyfelagtige kontrakte van R384 miljoen van die Noord-Kaapse departement van gesondheid verkry het, het op Vrydag 31 Januarie ’n tweede terugslag gehad nadat sy en sy direkteure se aansoek dat die regter homself van hul verhoor moet verskoon, van die hand gewys is.
Hul vroeëre aansoek om ontslag op al die aanklagte teen hulle het ook in die hooggeregshof in Kimberley misluk.
Die staat het reeds sy saak gesluit in die verhoor van Steven Jonkers (55), eertydse departementshoof van gesondheid en deesdae adjunkdirekteur-generaal in die kantoor van die premier, Defensor Electronic Security Systems, asook sy direkteure Renier van Rooyen (62) en Claudius Gerald Peterson (57).
Almal behalwe Jonkers het ’n aansoek gebring dat die regter homself van die verhoor verskoon.
Die aansoekers het sewe gronde aangevoer waarop hulle ’n vermoede het dat die regter partydig mag wees. In sy uitspraak het waarnemende regter Omphemetse Chwaro al die gronde verwerp.
Die regter meen die aansoek dat hy homself moet verskoon voldoen nie aan die kriterium nie.
Die een kwessie was die regter se weiering vroeër om die verhoor vir ’n forensiese getuie uit te stel om namens die verdediging te getuig oor die geloofwaardigheid van die tenderdokumente. ’n Aansoek om uitstel is nie ’n gegewe in ’n verhoor nie, en die finale besluit lê by die voorsittende beampte. Die verdediging het die keuse om
Renier van Rooyen (62) staan buite die beskuldigdebank, terwyl Claudius Peterson (regs, in die swart hemp) en Steven Jonkers met hul selfone besig is.
staatsgetuies te herroep of hul eie getuies te roep wanneer hulle getuienis lei, meen die regter. Die verdediging het ook aangevoer die regter handhaaf ’n meer gunstige houding jeens die staat as die verdediging. Hierop het regter Chwaro uit die rekord voorgelees om te toon dat enige kwessies reeds opgelos is en dat hy die staat en verdediging tot orde roep indien nodig. Die verdediging het ook gereeld beswaar gemaak indien die staat leidende vrae gestel het, terwyl die regter ook daarop ingestel was. Die verdediging is steeds ontevrede oor die regter hul aansoek om ontslag afgewys het. Volgens regter Chwaro kom dit voor asof die verdediging bedekte appèlaansoeke teen sy besluite en uitsprake maak.
Na bewering sou Van Rooyen ook ’n oproep ontvang van ’n man wat aangevoer het hy is ’n staatsadvokaat in Gauteng. Die man het glo omkoopgeld gevra om regter Chwaro te beïnvloed. Daar is egter geen bewyse wie die man is nie en
boonop sê regter Chwaro niemand ken die man nie.
Die aangeklaagdes word van tenderbedrog vir ’n sekuriteitskontrak verdink. Die staat voer aan die beskuldigdes het vanaf 13 Maart 2014 tot 20 Oktober 2017 geheul en ’n wanvoorstelling in tenderdokumente gemaak om die departement te bedrieg.
Van Rooyen en Peterson word daarvan verdink dat hulle nie die vereistes vir tender nagekom het toe die bod ingedien is nie. Die maatskappy was nie by die Reguleringsowerheid vir die Privaatveiligheidsbedryf (Prisa) geregistreer nie.
Hulle het na bewering ook ’n vals belastingklaringsertifikaat ingedien.
Die twee het na bewering ook voorgegee dat hulle nie enige belange in verwante maatskappye het nie.
Jonkers het as rekenpligtige beampte na bewering die departement en personeel mislei dat hy tevrede was dat verkrygingsvereistes nagekom is. Die vereistes van die Wet op Openbare Finansies is na bewering op opsetlike, onwettige en roekelose wyse geïgnoreer, luidens die akte van beskuldiging.
As rekenpligtige beampte moet Jonkers ’n regverdige, deursigtige, mededingende en koste-effektiewe aankoopproses volg en onreëlmatige en vermorste uitgawes voorkom.
Jonkers het glo die oorspronklike bod van R224 miljoen goedgekeur asook ’n verdere aanpassing van R160 miljoen toe die kontrak onderteken is.
Adv. Isaac Mphela kla aan. Advv. Willem Edeling, SC, en Kristle Peterson tree namens al die beskuldigdes op. Die verhoor is tot 30 Junie uitgestel.
Onderbesteding bedreig menseregte in
Dringende optrede is nodig om die Gamagara-munisipaliteit se besteding van finansiering vir munisipale infrastruktuur te verbeter.
Henriëtte du Plessis, DA-raadslid, sê in ’n verklaring dat die party die munisipaliteit sal versoek om dringend ’n taakspan te stig om ’n implementeringsplan vir munisipaleinfrastruktuurtoelae (MIG) te ontwikkel.
Dit volg op die onthulling in halfjaarlikse finansiële dokumente dat
slegs 6% van toelaefinansiering tot dusver bestee is. Onlangs het die ouditeurgeneraal ook onthul dat Gamagara se MIG-geld in die vorige boekjaar met 67,93% onderbestee is.
“Die oorblywende geld moes teruggestuur word na die tesourie. Inwoners is dus beroof van R6,383 miljoen se beleggings in opknapping van kritieke infrastruktuur en is gevolglik van toegang tot basiese dienste ontneem,” sê Du Plessis. Die Olifantshoek-gemeenskap moes

onder meer van September tot Januarie verlammende waterbeperkings verduur. Die MIGfinansiering van R23 miljoen wat vir die 2024-’25-boekjaar toegeken is, het die potensiaal om volhoubare watervoorsiening drasties te verbeter en voortdurende rioolstortings aan te spreek.
“Die munisipaliteit se versuim om weereens hierdie geld te benut grens aan menseregteskending,” meen Du Plessis.

Woman leads SPU in next phase
Prof. Debra Meyer was appointed as the third vice-chancellor and principal of the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley, effective 1 January 2026. Meyer will serve as the vicechancellor designate throughout 2025, working closely with the current vice-chancellor and principal, Prof. Andrew Crouch, as part of the leadership transition. During this period, she will retain her role as deputy vice-chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Postgraduate Studies at the SPU.
Meyer, as a distinguished academic leader, has a wealth of experience in higher education. She has been instrumental in driving the SPU’s research agenda and enhancing its postgraduate programmes. Her career reflects a strong commitment to excellence, equity, and the transformative power of education.
According to a statement from the SPU, Meyer’s vision for the future of the university, with her knowledge of its unique geographic and socioeconomic positioning, made her an
outstanding choice to lead the institution into its next phase of growth and development.
“As the SPU approaches its second decade, her leadership will be critical in driving initiatives that ensure financial sustainability, enhance student success, and strengthen the university’s impact locally and globally,” the statement read.
Amongst other, Meyer holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of California in America and completed her MSc:
Biochemistry at the Rand Afrikaans University, now the University of Johannesburg (UJ).
She is the recipient of numerous research awards, and contributed to the fight against AIDS through multidisciplinary research, public lectures, articles for research, and community service projects Meyer is also an accomplished author, poet, and public speaker. She presented the weather on SABC2 twice a week from 2000 to 2012, and in 2014 launched a science-based programme, Debra deel, on kykNET.

Friersdale juig oor drome bewaarheid
Nuus dat die Gekombineerde Skool Friersdale R.K., tussen Keimoes en Kakamas, verskeie prestasies in die 2024-matriekeksamen behaal het, het “tegelykertyd geskok en verras”.
Nie net het Friersdale se 52 matrikulante ’n 100%-slaagsyfer behaal nie, maar het die skool ook die tweede plek in die Noord-Kaap as ’n topskool behaal. Boonop het die skool die nommer een plek in die ZF Mcgawu-distrik behaal.
Henry Isaacs, adjunkhoof van Friersdale, beskryf die dag toe hy en Francois de Klerk, voormalige hoof wat afgetree het, die uitslae, trofees en sertifikate in Kimberley ontvang het, as besonders.
“Faktore wat bygedra het (tot die slaagsyfer) is dat ons dwarsdeur die
jaar moeite gedoen het om leerlinge by alle moontlike ekstra-, intervensieen Saterdagklasse uit te kry.”
Isaacs sê daaglikse aanmoediging, en die feit dat hulle nooit moed opgegee het om die leerlinge te oortuig dat hulle almal wel kan slaag nie, het ook tot sukses bygedra.
“Omtrent 95% van ons leerlinge is armlastig. Baie se omstandighede tuis is nie na wense nie. Baie is van die voedingskema afhanklik en sien uit na ’n bordjie kos by die skool.
“Nogtans moedig ons hulle aan en probeer hulle sielkundig oortuig dat die omstandighede waarin hulle nou is, nie hul toekoms bepaal nie.”
Vir vanjaar se matrikulante is Isaacs se raad dat hulle reg van die begin af moet fokus, toegewyd moet wees en studeer om die droom wat hulle vir hulself het, te bewaarheid.

‘KORTPAD’ KNOU BRUG
Die treinbrug in Upington, waaraan vragmotors gereeld vashaak wanneer hulle deur die duikweg in Schröderstraat ry, raak al hoe meer beskadig en vrees bestaan dat die brug op ’n dag ineen kan tuimel.
Schröderstraat, deel van die N14-roete deur die dorp, is oënskynlik die kortste roete deur Upington, en word deur talle GPS-
programme as sulks aangedui. Waarskuwingsborde wat voor die duikweg opgerig is, is nie geslaagd om vragmotorbestuurders te keer om onderdeur die treinbrug te probeer ry nie. Inwoners doen ’n beroep op die Dawid Kruiper-munisipaliteit om weer aandag aan die borde te gee, of om ’n veiliger roete vir swaarvoertuie voor te stel.

Maak verrassende opwagting by uitkykpunt
Met ’n onlangse besoek aan die Mokala- Nasionale Park, ongeveer 80 km vanaf Kimberley, het Leon Venter en sy kleinseun Cayden, soos gewoonlik, ’n draai by die Stofdam-uitkykpunt gemaak. Hy vertel dat verskeie voëls en diere water kom drink het. “Terwyl die kameelperde ’n droë plekkie soek om hul staan te kry om by die water uit te kom, kom ’n bokkie van agter die kameelperde aangestap. Aanvanklik het ons gedink dit is ’n rooibokkie, maar groot was ons verbasing om hierdie pragtige rooiribbokram by Mokala teë te kom. ’n Eerste vir ons,” sê hy. Lig werklikheid uit onwaarheid
Die onwaarhede wat ons daagliks verkondig of aanhoor, is soms subtiel, soms blatant. Dit kan uit onkunde, traak-mynie-agtigheid, of opsetlike misleiding spruit. Onlangse bemarkingsmateriaal oor die Noord-Kaap en Kimberley verkondig dat Kamfersdam die grootste versameling van groot- en kleinflaminke in Afrika het. Om dié feit, wat in die verre verlede korrek was, te staaf, word (verouderde) foto’s van dié massa pienk flaminke gebruik. Ek het iewers ’n bordjie gesien wat lees: “I have a kitchen because it came with the house.”
Daar is diegene wat regtig só oor ’n kombuis voel. Hoe minder tyd hulle daar deurbring, hoe beter. Vir hulle is ’n kombuis net ’n werksplek – kos maak, skottelgoed was, wasgoed was. Hoe vinniger hulle kan klaarmaak en daar uitkom, hoe beter. Tog is ’n kombuis soveel meer as dit. Vroeër jare se kombuise het hulle meer daartoe geleen, maar ’n kombuis is steeds ’n kuierplek. ’n Gesinsplek. ’n Onsmaak-herinneringe-plek. ’n Deelvan-emosies-plek. ’n Ons-bouverhoudinge-plek. Daar is ongelukkig goed wat in ’n kombuis gedoen moet word.
Die meeste mense nooi kuiermense saam kombuis toe wanneer hulle koffie gaan maak of ’n ete berei. Kuier-kuier kom die werk klaar.
Kinders verwyl baie keer tyd in ’n kombuis terwyl hulle iets vir Ma oor huiswerk vra.
’n Mens kan tog nie die stoof en wasbak saam met jou dra wanneer iemand jou vanuit ’n ander vertrek roep nie, so dit is makliker as die res van die gesin kombuis toe kom.
Mense deel hier stories van die dag se ondervindinge en gesels oor die res van die week se uitdagings en verwagtinge. Hulle lag en huil en gesels saam – tussen die stoof, die wasbak en die wasmasjien.
’n Kombuis is soveel meer as net nog ’n vertrek in die huis. Dit is in baie gevalle waar die meeste herinneringe saamgevleg word.

Hm. Ek het ’n goeie verskoning dat ek my enkel verstuit het, so dit is die verkeerde voet om op te trap as jy nog beneweld geslaap is. Omdat die knorrigheid dik in die keel opstoot weens min slaap. Dan swaai jy om na die anderkant van die bed, wat glo die regte kant is, om met ’n lied in die hart op te staan. Soos jy swaai, hol die honde ook om die bed se hoeke. Brig. Hennie van Rensburg, former head of the Operational Coordination Centre in the Northern Cape, was nominated as the best senior operational manager of the year, policing level 13 to 15.
The tenth national excellence awards ceremony took place at the International Convention Centre in Durban on 26 January. It was officiated by the minister of police, Senzo Mchunu. In Van Rensburg’s absence at the ceremony, the provincial commissioner, Lt Gen. Koliswa Otola, accepted the award on his behalf.
Van Rensburg retired from the (SAPS on 31 December 2024 after serving for more than 39 years. He performed his last operational duties on New Year’s Eve.
The highlights of his career include the illicit mining operations executed in the
Namaqua district in September 2023, during which 867 suspects were arrested for illicit mining. He also played a pivotal role in other operations aimed at curbing illicit mining, as well as those involving the 2010 Soccer World Cup and the 2024 general elections, to mention a few. Otola, on behalf of the management and colleagues, congratulated Van Rensburg, together with other officers who received awards at this national event.

Skill showing on the greens

Skill, determination, and sportmanship were seen on the greens when the 16 top men and women in the province competed in the Northern Cape Bowls (NCB) Singles Championships.
This event hosted over the past weekend at the Beaconsfield Park Bowling Club and the Sol Plaatje West End Bowls Club in Kimberley
saw Marietjie van den Berg from Upington securing her third consecutive title in the women’s finals, with CP Mathewson from Kimberley clinching the men’s title. In the women’s final, Van den Berg faced off against Susan Leeuwner from Upington, while Mathewson took on Le Roux Fourie from Upington. Husband and wife Quintin and Liezl Kock from Hanover finished in the third place.
NCB president, Braam van der Westhuizen, believes there are more players with potential in the province who need to test their skills on the greens. He is confident that the sport will grow amongst old and young. Several tournaments await players, including the fours, interdistrict, U18, U25 and masters tournaments. Mathewson will represent the province on the national stage at the Bowls South Africa Masters Championship next weekend.
