PARK IL -CHEOL Nothing and Something - the beginning It has been 5 years since I fulfilled my life’s dream of a painter after 15- and 14-year career as a high school art teacher and college art professor. It has almost two years since I moved here. I wrote a paper titled “Medium Changes in Contemporary Art (Focusing on Kinetic Art)” in the Graduate School of Education at Busan Art College. That led me into becoming consumed with computer graphics. I retired from my position of a teacher and then launched my computer graphics laboratory called ‘CG‘S‘ in Yeonje-gu, Busan in 1993. In 1995, I was invited to deliver lectures on computer graphics and create works using this from time to time at Busan Arts College. In 2007, a year before my voluntary retirement, I represented a form that all things in the world are somehow related to each other through my first private exhibition titled “Thoughts for Line and Relationship”. For my second private exhibition in 2008, I visited the Old Twon of Lijiang in Yunnan Province for 15 days to see pictogram used in real life even today because I was interested in hieroglyphs and amulets at the time. Based on the symbols of desire that I saw there, I represented my works using printmaking techniques. When holding my thrid and fourth private exhibitions, I immersed myself in accidental forms created by fractal software that simple form is repeatedly generated. With regard to the form of the Big Bang I published last year, I represented the universe that was created in an instant using fractal.

My works early this year were created as a variation of previous cosmic forms. However, there was an abrupt change. The Sinking of the MV Sewol in April caused many fatalities, and there was intense controversy over how to reveal the truth. In the 18th South Korean presidential election held in 2012, I, a great fan of podcast, was in a panic. At the time, I created a work by scribing images using CD-R Light Scribe to put them on a cardboard box. For this private exhibition, I put eye-catching images reflecting the period using this. The works were created based on the idea that works should reflect media in each period not only in artists’ thoughts but also in materials. (Artist’s Statement)

무와 유 - 그 시작 고교미술교사 15년과 대학 강단에서 14년 모두 29 년간을 교직을 마무리하고 본래의 꿈인 그림쟁이로 나선지 5년이 되었다. 기장군 연화리 후배 화실에서 해운대 작업실에서 통영 도산예술촌(Dosan art village)은 4번째 이사 온 작업실이다. 이곳에 온지도 벌 써 두 해 째다. 교육대학원에서‘현대미술에 있어 매체의 변모( 키네틱 아트를 중심으로)에 관한 논문을 쓰게 되었 고, 그 계기로 컴퓨터그래픽스에 열중하게 되었고, 1993년 교사를 접고 부산 연제구에 ‘시지스’라는 컴퓨터그래픽스 연구실을 차렸다. 1995년 부산예술대학에 교수로 초빙되어 컴퓨터그 래픽스 강의와 이를 이용한 작품들을 간간히 해왔다. 명예퇴직 1년 전인 2007년, 나의 첫 개인전의 타이 틀은 ‘선과 관계의 단상들(Thoughts for Line and Relationship)’로 세상 만물이 어떤 관계로 연결되 어 있다는 형상을 표현했다. 2008년 2회 개인전은 당 시 상형문자와 부적들에 관심을 가지고 있던 터라 현 재도 실생활에서 그림문자를 볼 수 있다는 중국 윈 난성 리장고성을 찾아 보름간을 보냈다. 여기서 착 안한 바램의 상징들을 판화같은 기법으로 발표했다.

2010년 이후 3회 4회 개인전은 단순한 단위의 형상 이 반복되어 생성된다는 프랙탈 원리의 소프트웨어 로 만들어 내는 우연적 형상에 빠져있었다. 작년에 발표한 빅뱅의 형상들도 도산예술촌에서 우주에 관 한 많은 다큐멘터리를 보면서 한순간에 생성되는 우 주를 프랙탈로 형상화 한 것이었다. 올해 초기 작품들은 이전의 우주적 형상들의 변형 시리즈 작업으로 만들었다. 하지만 갑자기 변화가 일어났다. 4월 세월호의 참사로 많은 이들의 희생이 있었고, 그 진상규명방법을 놓고 시끄러웠다. 2년 전 2012년 대선에서 팟캐스트 애청자인 나는 멘붕에 빠져있었다. 그 당시 시디 라이트 스트리브(CD-R Light Scribe)로 이미지를 새겨 택배 박스에 붙이는 작품을 한 점 만든 적이 있다. 이번 개인전에 그것을 응용하여 나의 시선을 끈 시대 상황적 이미지를 넣 었다. 작품은 작가의 생각 뿐 아니라 재료에 있어서 도 시대적 메체가 반영되어야 한다는 생각으로 만들 어진 작품들이다.
