EL 1 – Observation of Teaching-Learning in Actual School Environment is one of the courses that a student-teacher should take. Through this course, he or she is able to discover things about teaching profession and have it at first hand experiences. This experiential course aims to immerse student teachers to actual classroom situation and learning environment. Through direct observation of learners’ behavior, motivation, and teachers’ strategies in teaching, classroom management, and assessment in learning in the K to 12 basic education curriculum among others, student teachers deepen their pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and apply educational theories learned in major and professional courses. Upon completion of this course, students are able to: 1) Demonstrate content knowledge of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and its application across curriculum; 2) Apply knowledge of instruction, assessment, learner differences, and curriculum programs to the design of teaching activities and development of strategies; 3) Develop a personal plan for becoming an effective professional teacher in the future using the lessons acquired from the observations of teaching-learning in the actual school environment; and 4) Present the most essential lessons in the course through an electronic portfolio.

3

Moreover, it will conclude the profile of the student-teacher, the worksheets, the journals, and of course the learning evidences. The worksheets have been distributed to its respective chapters in every topic in this course. Through this portfolio, teachers and students will be able to see the experiences of the student-teacher during the Experiential Learning that was held online. While it may be different from the other EL classes before, this is a great avenue for them to see the real world of teaching and learning during this global health crisis that we are facing right now. At the end of the day, this course prepares a student-teacher as he or she conquer the real world of teaching in the Teaching Internship next school year.

1. Is the teacher’s background and qualifications aligned with the subject/s he/she is assigned to teach? The teacher’s background and qualifications are aligned with the subject that she is assigned to teach. Her tertiary course was Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Filipino that led her to take up Master of Arts in Teaching Filipino. Further, she finished 27 units in the Doctor of Education and is planning to continue her studies after the pandemic. With the well-aligned course that she took, she is beyond qualified in teaching Filipino to her students. An additional factor is her length of service that made her experience a lot of things in the teaching field and in teaching Filipino subject as well.

2. Does he/she use K-12 curriculum guide in preparing a lesson plan? The cooperating teacher is following the K-12 Curriculum Guide in preparing her lesson plan. In this time of pandemic, she utilized the proposed Most Essential Learning Competencies by the Department of Education that was based on the K -12 Curriculum Guide. Also, she considered the CAP in making her learning objectives. The CAP stands for Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor. These three enables each and every learner to develop holistically in their own simple ways through her guidance.

3. Does he/she consider the learner’s prior knowledge in designing a lesson plan? She does consider the learners’ prior in designing the lesson plan. Before the presentation of the topic, she asks the students about the last topic that they have discussed and somehow asks the students what they discussed with the said topic. She usually uses inductive method wherein she starts by making a recap followed by the motivation and so on. 9

4. Does he/she use varied teaching strategies to deliver the subject matter? Since Philippines is facing a global health crisis brought by COVID19, she is almost using the same teaching strategies. She cannot do anything about this since she is out of control with the situation. Further, she cannot fully utilize different teaching strategies since most of her students cannot afford to attend to their google meeting. However, she is doing her best to still inspire and motivate her students with some of the activities that she is giving.

5. Does he/she conduct research in planning for his/her lessons? We live in a world where almost everything can be seen on the internet. However, she does not only rely on the internet, but she also uses different textbooks in her lesson planning. She believes that she has to conduct research through different reliable resources in order to provide the best for her students.

Every teacher is filled with knowledge in the subject that he/she is teaching. They have put four years of their lives studying different theories and concepts with regards to the subject that they will be teaching. Thus, teachers are equipped with enough knowledge in their respective fields of specialization.

CONTENT KNOWLEDGE

Based on what I have observed in class, Content Knowledge is important for it serves as the guide of the teacher in the delivery of instruction. The teacher has mastered the content that she is teaching. Given the years in the service, there is no doubt that she has enough knowledge with the subject that she is teaching.

With proper Content Knowledge, teachers will be able to have a smooth class discussion. There will be no fear in him/her that he/she cannot answer the queries of the class. In that way, students will then have the eagerness to learn more as you go on with the discussion.

13

PEDAGOGICAL KNOWLEDGE

Teachers are said to be one of the most creative individuals in the society. Aside

from

preparing

colorful

and

meaningful instructional materials, they are able to think of different teaching strategies that will surely motivate the students to learn.

From what I have observed, pedagogical knowledge plays a vital role in the teaching and learning process. Students having different family backgrounds requires different learning approaches. Thus, the teacher has to use different pedagogical strategies so that the teaching

and learning process will be more meaningful. The strategies that the teacher will be using should be appropriate with the subject matter and with the capabilities of his/her learners.

Attending different seminars will be of great help for teachers to expand their knowledge and skills in pedagogy. In that way, they will be able to provide different teaching and learning strategies that will encourage the students to learn regardless of the subject matter that will be involved. Remember,

14

CURRICULAR KNOWLEDGE

Curriculum takes a lot of knowledge and effort to make. Without a curriculum, there will be a chaos in the educational system. Thus, without proper knowledge of the teacher in the curriculum, there is a possibility that the competencies intended for learning will not be met.

Based on my observation, curricular knowledge is really important for teachers. Now that we are facing a global health crisis, the Department of Education somehow made a move by shortening the competencies that the students need to meet. Based on the Curriculum Guide, the teachers choose the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) that every student needs to meet.

The teachers have enough knowledge in the curriculum that made it easier for them to choose the MELCs for the students. It is undeniably true that when teachers have enough knowledge in the curriculum, it will be easier for them to modify the teaching and learning process. 15

What do you think are the strategies used by the teacher to enrich his/her mastery of the subject matter?

Every teacher has its own way of mastering a subject matter. It may be innate, he/she studied, or it have been learned through experiences. As for me, I think that one of the strategies that the teacher used to enrich her mastery of the subject mastery was her educational background. She took up Bachelor of Secondary Education, Major in Filipino and it is aligned to the subject that she is teaching right now. Also, she finished her Master of Arts in Teaching Filipino that enhanced the knowledge that she had in college. Further, she finished 27 units in the Doctor of Education and is planning to continue. Another factor is the seminars that she has attended to. Based on an interview with her, she has attended different trainings, seminars, and workshops regarding Filipino subject be it local, regional, and national level. Through these activities that she had attended to, it made her grow professionally and boosted her specialization which is Filipino. Lastly, her length in the service. She devoted her life in teaching. She has been through a lot of experiences that made her master the lessons that she is teaching. Also, she has grown personally and professionally since her length of service is undeniably that long now. Her knowledge before have been added and updated that made it easier for her to master the lessons.

16

What do you think are the strategies used by the teacher to enrich his/her pedagogical knowledge?

Teachers are known to be creative in their respective areas of specialization. They have their own strategies that will make the teaching and learning process more fun and exciting. In my perspective, one of the strategies that the teacher is using to enrich her pedagogical knowledge is through her education. Aside from finishing an education course and finished her masters, she has enrolled in the Doctor of Education. Through this, she is able to learn different techniques in teaching that changes from time to time. She is improving since she allows a room for improvement. Further, the seminars that she attended. There are a lot of seminars that discusses different techniques in the teaching and learning process. Through these seminars, she was able to learn techniques and strategies for herself and for her students. Lastly, she learned from her younger colleagues. Students are changing and it is true that the old style won’t fit to the new ones. Thus, she asks her younger colleagues on the techniques that they are using so that she will adopt it too. In that way, she is not left behind. Also, her students won’t be bored and will still be willing to participate in the discussion given that the strategies suit their age.

17

What do you think are the strategies used by the teacher to enrich his/her curricular knowledge?

Teachers cannot deny the fact that the curriculum serves as their guide in the teaching and learning process. They are using the curriculum in order for them to know the topic to be taught and to distinguish the learning competencies to be met. Based on what I have observed, one of the strategies that the teacher is using to enrich her curricular knowledge is through studying the content of it. She needs to study every part of the curriculum so that she will have an idea especially in preparing her lesson plan. In addition, her participation in training and seminars regarding the K to 12 Curriculum in Filipino have helped her enrich her curricular knowledge. She has enough knowledge in this curriculum since she has been through different seminars every week and went through workshops that made her gain knowledge. Another factor can be the sharing of ideas with her colleagues. She manages to talk with her colleagues and through that, they can share their own understanding regarding the curriculum.

18

I realize that being a teacher in this time of pandemic requires a lot of effort and patience since it does not get easier. As a future teacher, I need to focus myself on having enough content, pedagogical, and curricular knowledge so that I will be an effective and efficient teacher in the near future. I should use my mind and my heart in teaching because I believe that teaching does not only require knowledgeable teachers but also emphatic teachers.

I believe that I will be learning more strategies and techniques in teaching as I go on with my class observation. I may not have observed the real classroom set up but who knows? This might be the set up for the coming years and I believe that I should embrace change. If this will still be the setup of the education, I will be thankful for I have experience this. It may not be easy since I cannot fully observe what I can observe in the real classroom setup, still, I am willing to learn and adapt to this kind of teaching and learning.

19

I feel that

I still have a lot of things to learn. My cooperating teacher has mastered her topic and I want to be like her. I was amazed on how she is delivering her lesson despite of the situation that we have right now. I am afraid that I may not be able to do it, but I was inspired to do more. She

is not that techy, but she is doing her best to pull it through. With that, I will also do my best so that someday, I will be able to master my lessons and I will be a good teacher with a great heart.

Being a professional teacher requires a lot of love. When you love what you are doing, everything else will follow. First, you have to love your students. Each and every one of them are unique and with that, you should accept them for who they are. Second, you have to love your subject. If students can feel that you really love what you are teaching, they will be motivated to learn more. Lastly, love the teaching profession. It may not be a lucrative profession but seeing your students grow in your hands makes it more satisfying to go on with life. Being a professional teacher requires a lot of love – love for yourself, your students, your subject, and your profession. When you love what you do, you won’t even question why you are doing this and that.

In what part of the instructional plan can teachers apply HOTS?

High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) plays a vital role in the development of the students. This allows them to think outside the box and are challenged to think critically.

HOTS can be applied in the whole instructional plan. From the learning objectives that includes the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domain; to the motivation where the teacher gives an activity that will catch the attention of the learners; to the lesson proper; to the activity to test the knowledge of students; and to their assessment through a written test or activity.

It is important for teachers to apply HOTS in all parts of the instructional plan so that the students will be able to improve their critical thinking skills. Also,

they

will

be

able

to

develop

themselves

personally and will prepare them for their professional development in the near future.

24

High Order Thinking Skills can improve the students’ learning through different ways in the teacher and learning process.

One of the ways is through developing critical thinking. Once the students learn how to think critically, they can probably improve their way of learning and they will surely have an upgrade towards their studies.

How can higher order thinking skills improve the students’ learning?

Another way is by thinking outside the box. Students are taught to be creative in their own ways. Through this, they are able to make different projects or activities in a creative manner and not through the typical ones. Further, HOTS can also teach the students to be good in the field of research. They are able to look for credible resources that will help them to gain knowledge and skills that they need in their everyday life.

Indeed, HOTS can help each and every student to improve their learning.

25

How important is creative and critical thinking in the 21st century workplace?

Creative thinking and critical thinking is important in the 21st century workplace for it benefits not only one but everyone. Creative thinking refers ability to consider something in a new way. It might be a new approach to a problem, a resolution to a conflict between employees, or a new result from a data set. On the other hand, critical thinking is the analysis of facts to form a judgment. The subject is complex, and several different definitions exist, which generally include the rational, skeptical, unbiased analysis, or evaluation of factual evidence. Thus, both of these thinking skills are important in the 21st century workplace. 21st century has a lot of demands and being creative and a critical thinker will help a lot to cater the needs the said century. If workers are creative, they are able to provide different styles in the workplace that will somehow improve the quality of their work. Same as through with being a critical thinker, they are able to think of ways on how to solve a certain problem or to propose a project that will benefit a lot of people. Being creative and a critical thinker at the same time may not be that easy but it will be that beneficial. It takes time to learn but it will be worth it.

surely teaching these,

they will be able to get some knowledge and skills that they can use in the teaching and learning process.

Teachers should never stop learning for they are the unending source of knowledge and skills of the future professionals of the world. 27

I realize that in making a lesson plan, there are several factors that you need to consider. Through that, the lesson plan will suit the learners’ capabilities and the subject matter. Further, in the making of the lesson plan, teachers should incorporate HOTS in order for them to develop the students creative and critical thinking skills that will cater the demands of the 21st century.

I feel that

it is not that easy to incorporate HOTS in the whole lesson planning. However, it is important to do so because this will help the students to develop holistically. If teachers settle for less, then probably their students will not be able to improve and will stay the same forever. On the other hand, if teachers adopt HOTS in their strategies, then I am sure that they will be able to produce globally competitive individuals.

28

I believe that teachers should never stop learning especially that they are the main source of information. Thus, this requires them to continue studying even if they have finished their college course. They can enroll in their masters and after a while, they can continue up to their doctorate degree. Further, they can also attend trainings and seminars so that they will gain knowledge that will be of great help in their personal growth and professional development.

Being a professional teacher requires

enough knowledge and skills in the teaching and learning process. Professional teachers should be equipped with knowledge and skills that are badly needed by their students. Without these, they won’t be able to provide quality education for all. But if they can, teachers will be able to produce globally competitive graduates. Teachers must never stop learning because by the time they choose to stop learning, they already choose not to be the main source of information of their students.

Non-verbal 1. Eye contact 2. Facial expression 3. Posture

Remarks • The teacher is a good communicator. She knows how to set the mood of her students to listen to her. She shares stories or asks the students about their experiences and such. • While the class may be in the form of virtual class, the teacher never fails to make an eye contact with her students. She is always looking on the camera that makes all her students listen attentively. • The teacher is always smiling. Her facial expression is very light. Her positive energy radiates through the whole class that even us, observers, smiles all the time. • Even though the setup is online, the teacher still manages to maintain a good posture from the beginning of the class up to the end of it.

They need to develop and improve their skills with this one so that the positive energy of the teachers will be the same or will be much better. • Most of the students does not sit properly during the google meeting. However, there are still some of the students who maintains a good posture during the discussion. • The gestures of the students are quite funny. Some of them leaves the meet if they are asked to answer a question. However, after some time, they will come back.

How important are the verbal and non-verbal forms of communication to the teachers?

Verbal and non-verbal forms of communication play an important role in the teaching and learning process especially for teachers. They use these in order to deliver their lessons and to assess if their students are learning or not.

Without verbal communication, there will be no meaningful discussion. We are in a global health crisis with a new mode of learning that needs verbal communication. We need to communicate to our students verbally in order for us teachers to deliver the lessons and in order for the students to meet the intended learning competencies. Also, verbal communication is also important in meeting the needs of the learners when it comes to their personal problems. They need a heartto-heart talk in order for them to somehow ease the burden that they are feeling. Indeed, verbal communication is needed.

On the other hand, non-verbal communication is also important in the teaching and learning process. During google meetings, teachers cannot expect that students will open their microphone all the time, same as through with their videos. Thus, this is an implication that maybe, just maybe, there is a meaning behind this. Through non-verbal communication, teachers are able to observe the actions of their students. They may not talk but their actions speak. Teachers should also focus on the non-verbal communication of the students in order for him/her to cater the needs of the learners who are not that capable in expressing themselves verbally.

Thus, both verbal and non-verbal communication is needed in the teaching and learning process. Both plays an important role and none of the two should be left behind. These forms of communication are beneficial in knowing the feelings of the students same as through with teachers. Through these, it will be easier for teachers and students on how they should respond to such situations.

33

How do verbal and non-verbal forms of communication affect the students’ learning? Students’ way of communicating inside a classroom has a great implication to their learning. If the student is expressive through oral or written communication, we can say that he or she is performing well in his or her studies. On the other hand, if the student is not that expressive be it oral or written, just through his or her actions, then there must be something wrong.

Over the years, it has been observed that when students are good speakers or writers, they are also good in class. However, some students who are not good speakers or writers are still good too. It’s just that they are different when it comes to their performance in class.

Some great speakers are not good arts and those who are great in arts are not good in speaking. That’s okay because every student is different and that they are all good in their own ways.

As a teacher, it is still important to develop both verbal and non-verbal skills of the students so that they will be able to use this skill once they enter college and later on to their respective jobs. Communication is important at all costs; thus, teachers should look over the communication skills of his or her students. 34

What forms of communication do the teachers and the students need to improve on?

Communication skills are one of the best assets an individual could have. It serves as a strong foundation for a harmonious relationship with other

people. Thus,

communication needs an

attention, it needs to be improved from time to time. Based on what I have observed in class, teachers and students need to improve their verbal communication especially when using the Filipino language. Aside from we, being Filipinos, there is a need for us to be fluent in using the Filipino language as the medium of instruction and medium of communication during Filipino classes. Students are having a hard time using Filipino language to express themselves during recitations. They would always mix it up with English or mother tongue. Also, the teacher should refrain from using voice fillers so that the flow of discussion will be smoother. Through that, students will be inspired to do the same. On the other hand, they also need to improve their non-verbal communication. Their gestures and body languages affect the flow of discussion. In this time of online class, non-verbal communication is much observed. Thus, students should look over their non-verbal communication skills because it might show a lack of respect to their teachers. Same as through with teachers, they should show positive attitudes towards their students so that they will always feel welcome in class without any fear. While

we

cannot

control

our

verbal

and

non-verbal

communication skills, we can do something to improve it. We just have to do it little by little and from time to time. We may not be the best speakers and listeners with the best skills but sooner or later, we will be able to develop it. 35

I realize that

that both verbal and non-verbal communication skills are important, both for teachers and students. With proper communication, the teaching and learning process will be much easier and much better. The discussion will be meaningful. Every student will be able to express himself or herself. Everyone will be given an opportunity to talk regardless of their class standing. Through that, each student will be able to improve themselves. Further, communication skills will also be beneficial for teachers and students outside the classroom. Their social skills will be developed since they know how to deal with other people through speaking or through their body languages. They will be able to gain friends and learn different life lessons by just mingling with other people through their communication skills, either verbal or non-verbal communication. With that, it is important for me, as a future teacher to improve my communication skills so that I will be able to prepare myself to whatever forms of communication will be needed once I enter the teaching profession. I will be able to know which communication will best suit my learners.

36

I believe that

I will be able to become a good communicator only if I am a good listener and observer. There is a need for me to improve my communication skills by observing other people. I believe that some of my skills can also be seen in others. Through that, I will be able to assess myself if my communication skills are good or not. Thus, there is a need for me to improve my skills both in speaking and in listening. After all, I believe that I want to become not just a good speaker. I want to become a teacher who is a great speaker and a good listener not only to my students but also to my fellow teachers in the near future.

37

I feel that

I will be able to influence other people if I am a good communicator. I should never settle for less because my students deserve the best. I will be able to influence my students by giving

them words of wisdom or words of encouragement that will serve as their inspiration to fulfill the things that they want to have. I should always be positive to them but of course, I should not pressure them. I should let them discover the things that they want to discover as long as I will guide them through words and through actions. Things will not be easy, but I am willing to do everything I can so that I will be able to improve my communication skills to influence other people with a

positive perspective in life.

38

Being a professional teacher requires

good communication skills, either verbal or non-verbal, inside and outside the four walls of the classroom. Teachers are not perfect. There will be times that they will commit mistakes when it comes to their grammar. Aside from that, there will be times where they cannot control their mannerisms. All of these imperfections of teachers are but normal. We are all expected to commit mistakes because we are not perfect, we are human beings who are trying to improve ourselves, for ourselves and for other people. We should inculcate in our minds that it is not that easy to become a teacher. There are a lot of factors to consider and being a good communicator is one. Nevertheless, if we commit mistakes through words or actions, it will never make us less as a person nor as a teacher. After all, day by day, we are learning, and we are improving.

OTHER COMMENTS

Some of the students are not participating in the class discussion. Most of them are not that comfortable when speaking in Filipino that makes it harder for our cooperating teacher to deliver the subject matter. However, she still managed to push it through by using different medium of instructions and some pedagogical strategies in the teaching and learning process that best suits the subject matter and the capabilities of the students.

I have observed that given her years in the government service, I cannot deny the fact that she has mastered the lessons that she is teaching. I am impressed on how she delivers her lesson even if it is through virtual class. She may not use presentations but the module that she is making is enough because it is very interactive and comprehensive. I, myself, wants to answer the module since I know that I can learn a lot from it. Also, it puts me in awe whenever she scolds her students. She is not that strict but when she starts to scold them, everyone in the meeting gets silent and I know that they have this high regard to her, a respect indeed every teacher should have and a respect every student should give. 40

IDEAL CLASSROOM

As cliché as it may sound, students learn best when they feel welcomed, comfortable, and safe. They will have the motivation within themselves to come to class everyday because of the warmth that they feel whenever they enter the classroom and whenever they are interacting with their teachers and fellow students.

According to our cooperating teacher, an ideal classroom should be conducive for learning. It should be well-ventilated, spacious, and welcoming. Aside from that she mentioned that a classroom should only be composed of 30-35 students so that during summertime, the number of class and the weather would not affect the performance of the whole class.

Further, she added that an ideal classroom should be beautified through collaborative efforts of the students as well as the parents. The Parent-Teacher Association of the class can set some funds to provide projects that will enhance the physical setup of the classroom. Examples would include, stand fan, wall fan, posters, newly painted blackboard, installation of white board, LCD projector, comfort room, bulletin board, cleaning materials, and the like. However, she said that these are just examples, it can either be donated or not, and it should never be a compulsory. As what she has stated, not all parents can afford to share something grand or something big in class. What matters is that they have an involvement with their child’s education. 43

As a student-teacher-observer, I have realized that our cooperating teacher is right. All the things that she has mentioned are true to life. While we all aim to have a beautiful classroom, we should consider the socio-economic status of each parent. If we teachers can at least sacrifice, then we could share too. After all, our students are not the only ones staying inside that room, we teachers are going to stay in that room too – not only for a year but for how many years that we are going to be in the teaching profession.

Moreover, I, myself, dreams to have a classroom that I never had during my high school days. In the near future, I want to beautify my classroom, little by little, and from time to time. I will not pressure my students or the parents of my students in enhancing the classroom. I know how it feels to have nothing in the pocket and there are other things that should be prioritized. After all, beautifying the classroom takes time. It does not happen overnight. It takes a lot of love, patience, understanding, effort, and of course, money.

While it has been a standard to provide a beautiful classroom, teachers should never forget that a conducive learning environment includes the compassion of the teacher, the involvement of the parents, and the love of the students. It is a collaborative effort between and among us to provide a welcoming, comfortable, and safe learning environment for every student, no matter who they are, what they are, or where they came from. Thus, an ideal classroom can be realized through collaborative efforts – one step at a time. 44

How does the classroom set-up affect the student’s performance and learning?

A good classroom set-up is what makes up a learner ready to learn, to participate, and to grow holistically. Thus, a classroom setup affects the students’ performance and learning in many ways.

Based on the experiences of our cooperating teacher, students do not perform well if the room is not well ventilated. They get bored easily and no matter how many strategies she used; she cannot guarantee a 100% percent attentiveness of the class. They feel uneasy because it is too hot inside the room and that they are more or less 50 inside the room.

In addition, the schedule and the classroom set-up affect each other. According to our cooperating teacher, some of her students gets bored with her subject which is Filipino. However, she added that if the schedule is from 7:30-8:30, 8:30-9:30, 10:00-11:00, and 11:00-12:00; the students are participative and attentive. In that case, she was able to conclude that when her subject is held in the afternoon, where the students feel tired, the room is hot, and the like – the students are not at their best.

With these circumstances, the administration renovated the old building of the Laboratory School providing a more conducive environment for the students and teachers. From a very dark hallways and classrooms, it turned out to be new and high-quality classrooms. They installed an aircon and provided a more spacious room for everyone.

45

However, by the time that the building was already ready, the pandemic came. They were not able to use the new building. Nevertheless, our cooperating teacher still hopes that sooner or later, everything will go back to normal and that they will be able to use the classrooms already.

Furthermore, she also discussed to us her experiences with the new mode of teaching and learning, the online class. She has observed that the google classroom, Facebook groups, Messenger group chats, and Google meetings are not as effective as the typical classroom set-up during faceto-face classes. Not even half of the class joins the google meetings. Also, most of the students are late in submitting their modules. With that, she said that while it is good to embrace change, the old one is still more effective and efficient for her.

With all the things that our cooperating teacher have mentioned, I realized that we cannot deny the fact that the classroom set-up plays a vital role in the performance, participation, and in the overall learning of the students. Hoping that someday, every school can provide classrooms that are conducive for learning and that are inclusive for everyone.

CLASS PARTICIPATION A philosopher once said, the mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be ignited. Thus, there is a need for teachers to encourage their students to keep the fire burning for their education to achieve their dreams and aspirations in life. Our cooperating believes that every student of hers is unique and that they are all good in their own simple ways. Thus, it is her duty to encourage and inspire her students to maintain their active participation in class. One of her ways to encourage her students is to call them by their first name. She avoids using their surnames since it is too formal for her. She added that by calling their names, they feel more safe and secure in answering. There is no fear inside them because they know that their teacher can accept them even if they give the right nor the wrong answer. Second, she gives everyone the time to share their thoughts, opinion, and ideas. She is focusing on the whole class and not only to those students who are excelling. In that way, she can develop the communication skills of every student and of course, their mental ability too. Third, she does not interrupt her students. She allows them to speak their heart out. If ever they say something that is not connected to the lesson, the teacher makes sure that she corrects them in a nice way. She taught us to respect our students so that they will not be fearful in participating in the class discussions. Lastly, our cooperating teacher creates an atmosphere that encourages active participation and gives recognition afterwards. She makes sure that everyone is heard and that everyone is given the right recognition. She gives praises like very good, nice answer, keep it up, and the like. By the time that I will already be a teacher, I will also adopt the strategies of our cooperating teacher. However, I should bear in mind that every student is different and with that, I should set strategies that will best suit my students. I am here not to spoon-feed my students, but I am here to ignite the hearts and the minds of my students for them to reach their goals and aspirations in life. 50

What is the best classroom set-up to encourage the students to engage in an activity?

Change is inevitable. People cannot control the things that are going to happen tomorrow and even on the next days. However, teachers can always adapt to these changes. They are flexible enough to embrace it, not for them but for their students. With the sudden change of the teaching and learning process, our cooperating had a half-half decision on what is better. Is it the face-to-face class or the online class? According to her, both are unique and have their own benefits. For the face-to-face class, teachers can easily deliver the lessons since they are used to that kind of setup. They can also monitor their student’s day by day. On the other hand, online class benefits the parents since they will no longer give allowances to their children, they will not buy uniforms, bags, and other schools supplies. However, online class does not guarantee a full learning of every student. We all know for a fact that students learn differently. Others may study alone but some may need the help of their teachers. According to our cooperating teacher, she had a hard time during the first few weeks of the online class since she cannot teach the lesson the way that she imagined. It is hard to teach by just looking at the camera of the laptop or cellphone because the students may not be listening. 51

Through the interview and observations, I can say that the best classroom setup is face-to-face classes where there is a physical interaction between and among the teachers and the students. Through face-to-face classes, teachers can monitor their students’ development and can also provide activities that will develop them holistically. While the teachers allow the students to learn on their own during the activities, teachers never fail to guide them along the way. Moreover, if classes are face-to-face, the teacher can set different rules inside the classroom that would encourage each learner to involve themselves in the discussions. Examples would include respecting their classmates while they are talking, letting everyone speak, avoid laughing if someone commits mistake, and other house rules that can be implemented. I am not saying that teachers cannot given house rules in online class but of course, we cannot guarantee a full implementation of the rules since not even half of the class joins the google meetings. While we cannot yet see the end of this dark tunnel that we are in, we can probably say that four walls of the classroom are still better than the four sides of our screen.

52

What are the strategies he/she is using to make the students participate in class?

If students are unique in their own simple ways, so thus teachers. They have their own unique styles and strategies in teaching that suits each and every one of their learners. There are a lot of strategies that I have observed through our cooperating teacher. One is that she leads with empathy. Whenever she observes that her students are struggling in digesting the topic, she asks them if they can follow or not. After which, she makes the topic easier to understand by citing real life examples which student can relate to. She helps her students along the way and that establishes a sense of safety and comfortability to them.

Second, the teacher allows the students to speak their mind and their heart. She does not only focus on one or two students but she focuses on all of her students. Everyone is given the chance to recite and share their thoughts and ideas.

Third, she respects their ideas. If someone answers a wrong one, she makes sure that she corrects the student in a positive way. She does not let the student feel shame about his or her answer. Rather, she builds up the answer of the student. She links

the answer to a more concrete and a closer answer to the question. In that way, students can realize that it is not just a pure criticism, it is a constructive criticism. 53

Fourth, she recognizes everyone. Whenever the students do something good in class, she makes sure that she would recognize everyone. She gives praises like excellent, very good, great job, and the like. In that way, the students feel a sense of pride and happiness at the same time because their efforts have been paid off.

Fifth, the teacher makes sure that no one is left behind. She

makes sure that everyone is included and that everyone is good in their own simple ways. In that case, they will feel that they are all welcome. Thus, there is no room for favoritism. Everyone is welcome, everyone is accepted, everyone is loved by the teacher and by their classmates.

From all the things that our cooperating teacher have said, I have come to realize that teachers are the drivers. If they cannot encourage their students, the whole class will be affected. However, I should bear in my mind that teachers are unique, they have their own ways of encouraging their students that will suit the capabilities of each and everyone of them.

54

I realize that

a teacher does not only develop his/her students mentally, he/she should develop the students holistically. It is important for teachers to know on how he/she will encourage the students to participate in class. In that way, she knows that they are active and that they are participative. She can guarantee to herself that the students are growing and improving from time to time. Also, I have realized that if teachers cannot motivate their students, then the teacher is not an effective and efficient teacher. Teachers are the drivers in the teaching and learning process. Thus, there is a need for them to guide the students as they discover the true meaning of learning and enjoying at the same time. Teachers must prepare themselves as they continue to learn different strategies in teaching that will best suit their students’ holistical development.

55

I believe that

I am going to provide the best strategies for my students that will suit them best. They are trying their best to achieve their dreams and with that, I will try my best to give them the best. It is still a long way to go before I will become a full pledged teacher. However, I am excited to rule my own class too. Seeing how our cooperating teacher handles her class properly even if we have this global health crisis makes me respect all the teachers even more. It is not easy to cope up with the new mode of learning, but I know that they are trying their best too. I believe that sooner or later, I will be able to apply all of the things that I have learned during my Experiential Learning. It was not easy to observe the strategies that the teacher is using to encourage the students to participate in class. However, it was manageable because our cooperating teacher never failed to guide us along the way. If students aim for the best, I should be the best version of myself too as I provide the best strategies that will make them the best in their chosen fields in the near future.

56

I feel that

I will not

be

able

to

fulfill my

duties

and

responsibilities well. I was not able to observe the real scenario during face-to-face classes. However, life must go on. Observing the strategies of a secondary teacher online is not that easy. There were a lot of questions in my mind. What if these strategies will not be suitable during face-to-face classes? What if my students will not like my strategies? There were a lot of what ifs in my mind, but I did not let that stop me from observing and experiencing what a student teacher should experience. I may not be able to see the real scenario during face-to-face classes, but I feel like these are just challenges along the way. It does not matter if I was not able to observe and experience everything for now. What matters is that I was able to learn something. From that something, I will keep it in my mind and in my heart as I prepare myself to become a full pledged Filipino teacher in the near future.

57

Being a professional teacher requires

Being a professional teacher requires empathy and creativity. These two works together in order to encourage the students to participate in class no matter how good or how bad they are in a particular subject. A professional teacher who knows how to show empathy to his/her students will provide a positive learning environment. He/she does not judge the students whenever they commit mistakes. Rather, he/she corrects them in a way where they can grow and improve themselves. In addition, being empathic to the students is a fulfillment in the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. On the other hand, a professional teacher should be creative too. He/she should think of ways on how to encourage his/her learners to participate in class. Examples would include the use of instructional materials that can attract their attention. It would also be great to give activities that does not require memorization. Rather, an activity that will enhance their Higher Order Thinking Skills without sacrificing their enjoyment in answering. It may not be promised to possess these two characters all the time but what matters most is that students will learn from you. There are days where teachers cannot possess these characters but remember, it will never make them less of a teacher. Teachers will always be teachers, they may not be perfect but once in our life, they make us feel perfect through our little achievements in class.

Based on the table, it shows that both of the classes that our cooperating teacher is handling does not belong to ethnic groups. However, when it comes to their religion, two from Grade 8 and three from Grade 9 belongs to Iglesia ni Cristo and the rest belongs to the Roman Catholic. Further, the almost all of the students’ mother tongue is Iloko and one from Grade 9 is Filipino. Moreover, the Grade 8 class have been dominated by men, they are all 42 in class with 23 boys and 19 girls. On the other hand, the Grade 9 class have been dominated by women, they are also 42 in class with 25 girls and 17 boys. Given the data above, it only implies that students have their own unique culture and identity. With these differences, there is a need for teachers to still maintain a harmonious relationship between and among the students no matter who they are, what they have, or where did they come from. After all, teachers are present in order to unite the students as they learn and discover things that they can use in their future professions. 61

What strategies he/she uses to address the individual differences of the students?

Jane Goodal once said, every individual matter, every individual has a role to play, and every individual has a difference to make.

Our cooperating teacher knows that every single learner inside her class is unique. No one is the same with the other but they are all good in their own ways. Given this situation, our cooperating teacher uses different strategies to address the individual differences of the students.

First, the teacher has a clear sense of their own ethnic and cultural identities. Our cooperating teacher respects the student’s cultural background. They came from different municipalities with different cultures and traditions. She welcomes each and everyone of them regardless of the place where they came from.

Second, the teacher communicates high expectations for the success of all students. The teacher sets expectations that will challenge the students to strive for the best. However, our cooperating teacher told us that the expectations should not be too high, it should only challenge the students but not overwhelm them. Not all students have the same level of understanding and that should be considered all the time. 62

Third, our cooperating teacher is personally committed to achieving equity for all students. She emphasized the word “equity” when we were having an interview with her. She told us that while it is important to maintain equality, it is better to provide equity. Sometimes, some students need more help than the others and that is okay. That should be accepted by their fellow students by letting the teacher understand the situation.

Fourth, our cooperating teacher has developed a bond with her students and cease seeing their students as "the other." She maintains a harmonious relationship with her students. She allows her students to be friends with her whenever they are done with their duties and responsibilities inside the classroom. Our cooperating teacher reminded us that the relationship that we will be building in the future should not affect the respect of our students to us.

Fifth, the teacher provides a "scaffolding" that links the academically challenging curriculum to the cultural resources that students bring to school. Our cooperating teacher emphasized the importance of linking the topics of the students to their cultural experiences. She also added that we should learn to localize our discussion in order for our students to understand what we are discussing. It is easier for them to digest what the teacher is talking about.

To sum it up, it is important for us teachers to know the background of our students. In that way, we will have an idea on how we are going to interact with them and how are we going to teach the topics that we wish to discuss. In everything that we say and do, we should always consider that the words or the actions can have a different meaning to our students who belongs to different social, religious, or ethnic groups. Through that, everyone will feel welcomed and for sure, everyone can make a difference within themselves and within the place that they are living in.

63

IMPORTANCE TO DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION.

All students can learn and succeed but not on the same day and not in the same way. Students are unique and they deserve to have differentiated instruction to be provided by their teachers. Differentiated instruction motivates the brilliant students to uncover deeper layers of learning, while simultaneously structuring curriculum to support lower-level students or students with learning disabilities- both identified and unidentified. Thus, differentiated instruction is beneficial to every student. According to our cooperating teacher, during the face-to-face classes she pairs the students to allow peer teaching. In that way, she is adopting another method of reinforcing the student’s understanding of the topic being discussed while providing a struggling student with a peer instructor. This reciprocal learning style is another way for teachers to utilize the strengths in their classrooms to create this differentiated instruction. And also, their social skills are being developed since they will be interacting with their classmates. Further, differentiating the medium of instruction is also a factor. Whenever our cooperating teacher observes that her students

cannot

understand

the

topic

through

their

facial

expressions, she translates it in their Mother-Tongue or sometimes in English. In that case, every student can understand what she is trying to discuss in class.

64

Moreover, the assessment that our cooperating teacher is using is changing from time to time. She told us that if she uses a written quiz for this week, the other week would be an activity where they will be acting or discovering. Students learn best when they are not bored. Thus, teachers need to change the assignments or the quizzes from time to time. Through that, students can maintain their motivation in class and will never get bored with the things that they are doing. If one-size-fits-all won’t work when buying a pair of shirts, educators know that one standard approach or strategy to teaching will not meet the needs off all- or even most- students. Without an attempt to vary instruction to meet the individual needs of each student, the curriculum is bound to bore some and baffle others. Differentiating instruction is the key to reaching all students to provide inclusive quality education for all. Differentiated instruction may take some time and may require an extra effort, it should not matter. Differentiated instruction is not only good for our students. It is also good for us teachers for it develops us and teaches us new strategies in the teaching and learning process. Thus, we continue to learn.

65

How he/she deals with learners with disability and giftedness?

If a child cannot learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn. Students learn best when they are not forced but are motivated.

It is indeed overwhelming to have learners coming from different walks of life. However, it doubles or even triples the feelings when teachers have learners with disability and giftedness. Mixed emotions will be streaming on to their blood for having learners like these for the reason that it requires a different level of teaching.

Good for our cooperating teacher, she does not have learners

with disability and giftedness. However, she made mention some ways on how we are going to handle such learners once we encounter them in the future.

First on the list is to understand their situation. She told us to put ourselves in the shoe of the parents’ child. If teachers will judge the child and will not try to understand the situation, the child will suffer. The teacher needs to show understanding towards the situation of the learners with disability and giftedness for he/she will serve as role model to her students. In that way, the whole class will understand the learners and discrimination will not occur.

66

Second, the teacher needs to adopt differentiated instruction. If teachers use a strategy that will only suit the learners with no disability and giftedness, they will be left behind. As much as possible, there is a need for teachers to think of strategies that will suit everyone in the class. The strategies should be appropriate

to their capabilities that will allow them to develop themselves.

Third, the teacher should pay more attention to the learners with disability and giftedness without making the other learners jealous of them. In this case, equity will prevail and not just equality. These learners need more in order for them to continue growing and developing so that they will not be left behind with other kids.

Fourth, be an inclusive teacher. There shall be no room for any discrimination between and among the students. Everybody should feel welcome regardless of who they are. Teachers should include and involve everyone so that no one will be left behind as she achieves an inclusive quality education for all. Lastly, teachers should never stop learning. They should take Continuing Professional Development units in order for them to develop themselves in the field of teaching profession. If they stop learning, it is like they already stopped giving their students an opportunity to learn and grow with the present trends and ideas.

To be a teacher is not only to teach a specific subject. It is being able to touch the lives of other people and to prepare them as they reach for their dreams. Always remember, students learn differently. With that, teacher instruction at all times.

should adopt

Ishaan Awasthi Every Child is Special

A child has a special way of adding joy to every day. It is indeed true that children bring joy to every family. They bring a lot of fun and excitement to their siblings and relatives, but most especially to their parents. Children binds the family stronger as they become the inspiration of every parent to dream bigger for a brighter future for their children.

However, it is a big question if children can still add joy to every day when they are special? Or are they just adding stress and anxieties to their parents? Just like the child Ishaan Awasthi in the movie entitled, “Every Child is Special.” He is a jolly child but as he grows, they found something special in him, something that not every child has.

When we look into Ishaan’s physical appearance, it’s like he does not have any exceptionality. He looks like he is a normal child with a normal life just like other children would have. He is handsome, quite tall for his age, looks healthy, happy, and contented with the life that he has. 68

On the other hand, when we observe Ishaan’s mental skills, we could probably say that something is wrong. When he writes, his letters and numbers are moving. If they are not moving, they are misspelled. His teachers noticed this that is why the administrators from his school decided to let Ishaan to retake his current grade level for three times. His teachers thought that he is dumb and lazy. But he is not.

Moreover, he may not be good in languages and in mathematics but he is actually good with arts and with nature. He loves to play with different creatures like fishes and other tiny animals. He loves to paint as a way to express his creativity. However, his parents judged him for these skills does not conform with the society that they live in.

Given the conflicts that Ishaan went through, his father decided to send him to a boarding school where students will be trained and disciplined. In the very first place, he did not want to go but he was not able to do something about it. That began his deterioration. He loses his interest in playing with nature and most especially with his favorite arts.

He was so devastated inside the boarding school. He did not want to interact with other people for the fear of judging him except for his one and only friend, Rajan. Also, he did not want to talk to his parents nor to his brother Yohan. He thought that the world turned its back on him. He felt like he was a burden to each and every one of them.

Until a substitute teacher came to their school. He discovered that Ishaan is suffering from dyslexia. He researched his background, interviewed his parents, assessed his former activities, and the like. The moment he knew that Ishaan is dyslexic, Mr. Nikhumb, the substitute teacher tried everything that he can to change the life of Ishaan, the special one. With his compassion to Ishaan, Mr. Nikhumb succeeded. He was able to bring out the best in Ishaan. From a dumb lazy boy to an intelligent and bright man.

There are several factors that I have learned with this movie. First, as a student. We, students, should never laugh at the mistakes of our classmates. When they commit something wrong in class, we should help them or teach them on how they are going to improve themselves. After all, we have student diversity. We have different family backgrounds, we have our own strengths and weakness, we are different, and we are probably unique in our own ways.

Second, as a future parent. Parents should inculcate in their minds that children have different ways of development. Some may develop earlier than expect and some may develop later. However, it will never make them less of a child. Parents should be observant so that if they see something wrong with their children, they can easily seek for medical assistance. Prevention is better than cure, as they say. In addition, as a future parent there is a need for us to refrain ourselves from comparing our children with other children. Let us accept and love our children as they are. If they feel loved and supported, they are more motivated to work.

Third, as a future teacher. It will be very challenging on the part of a teacher if he or she encounters a student with exceptionalities. Teachers should take these students wholeheartedly. They need more attention, and they expect much from us, teachers. If the society cannot accept them, we should teach the students to accept themselves as we prepare them to face the judgmental society that we have. Further, we, teachers, should try to discover different teaching strategies that will suit our learners. If we can afford to enroll and study for inclusive education, then so be it. If we have the opportunity to attend seminars, trainings, and workshops for inclusive education, we should grab it. Nowadays, society expect much from teachers and we should try not to fail them.

70

Furthermore, we should try to change our perspective when it comes to the norms of our society. We are blinded by the high standards when it comes to education. I am not saying that having high standards is not right. It is still good for it will challenge to exert more effort in their studies. However, we should teach our students to appreciate whatever talent that they have. After all, we have different types of intelligences. All of their intelligences and talents are valid and accepted no matter what discipline they are good at.

At the end of the day, we should bear in mind that each and every one of us has an important role to play in this society. No matter who we are, what we are, or where did we come from – we are all valid.

Let us allow our children to discover their own talents. We should not pressure them. Let us give them enough time to the skills that they have through our love, guidance, and support. After all, it is our pride and honor when we see them grow – someone to an extraordinary one.

OTHER COMMENTS Our cooperating teacher is so patient with her students. While she sets a good example to us, future teachers, I feel like there is a need for her to not be too patient all the time. Some of her students are already abusing her and I do not want to tolerate such things. I may not be in the position of our cooperating teacher but seeing them disrespect their teacher makes me feel sad. Teachers should be respected all the time. They may not be perfect, but they deserve to be respected. By the time that I will already be a teacher, I will not tolerate students who are disrespectful. I will do everything that I can to develop my students to be well rounded individual at all times.

The students are active in the discussion. The good thing is that they already have a positive outlook when it comes to Philippine Literature that makes them appreciate the novel, Noli Me Tangere. I have observed that they are enjoying and at the same time, they are learning too.

The students are not that active in the discussion. It’s like they are not interested with the topic. No matter how big the effort our cooperating teacher is putting in the class, the students still doesn’t seem to appreciate it. Maybe, it is not their forte because as what I have observed, they are not that good in using the Filipino language. However, they are still accepted because every child is special and that every child has his/her own strength and weakness. 82

TYPES OF ASSESSMENT

Assessment is an integral part of instruction, as it determines whether or not the goals of education are being met. It refers to the wide variety of methods or tools that educators use to evaluate, measure, and document the academic readiness, learning progress, skill acquisition, or educational needs of students. Further, assessment affects decisions about grades,

placement,

advancement,

instructional

needs,

curriculum, and, in some cases, funding.

There are three types of assessment that are being used by teachers in the teaching and learning process.

These

assessments

measure

the

knowledge and skills of the students that serve as a basis of teachers in strategies that they will be

utilizing.

First is the Diagnostic Assessment. This is a form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction. It is primarily used to diagnose student difficulties and to guide lesson and curriculum planning. The diagnostic assessment is being utilized by our cooperating teacher before heading on to her new topics. It serves as the pre-test of her students so that she will have an idea on the background knowledge of her students. 97

Second is the Formative Assessment. It is a planned, ongoing process used by all students and teachers during learning and teaching to elicit and use evidence of student learning

to

improve

student

understanding

of

intended

disciplinary learning outcomes and support students to become self-directed

learners.

Our

cooperating

teacher

uses

formative assessment to measure the understanding of her students regarding the topic that they have discussed. The examples that she has mentioned are informal questions, practice quizzes, exercises, and the like that are not recorded.

Third is the Summative Assessment. This type of assessment is administered at the end of an instructional unit in a course. These assessments are intended to evaluate student learning by comparing performance to a standard or benchmark. They are often high stakes,

meaning they have a high point value. This is being utilized by our teacher during the end of each chapter. Usually, she gives this in a form of a written test, a requirement that is either individual, pair, or group.

The three types of assessment work together in order to assess the students’ performance and if teachers are able to meet their objectives or not. If not, they can think of other ways of assessment as long as they will not change their objectives.

98

IMPORTANCE TO DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION.

The three types of assessment vary from each other. They have their own work to do. Thus, they are being utilized depending on what the teacher is trying to measure from his or her students. First, diagnostic assessment. This type of assessment is being used at the beginning of the grade level or at the beginning of each topic. Our cooperating teacher told us that she uses this type of assessment to collect data on what student already know about the topic. Through this assessment, she is able to pinpoint the strengths and weaknesses of the students in a specific topic that helps her determine which part of the topic is she going to give emphasis on. Diagnostic assessment is usually in the form of a written test called pre-test. Second, formative assessment. This is being utilized by our cooperating teacher to capture learning-in-process in order to identify

gaps,

misunderstanding,

misconception,

and

evolving

understanding before summative assessments. She uses formative assessment to measure the understanding of her students towards the topic that they have discussed or to what they are discussing. She told us that there is nothing to worry if the students got a high or a low score with this type of assessment. It only allows the students to practice their skills, understanding, and test their knowledge without the pressures associated with grades. Formative assessment is usually in the form of informal questions, practice quizzes, one-minute papers, and exercises.

99

Third, summative assessment. This is given to the students at the end of every chapter. Our cooperating teacher told us that this is the most popular type of assessment because it is cost efficient, it takes a relatively short amount of time to create and grade, and it provides a numerical grade of how much a student has learned. She usually uses summative assessment to assess the students during mid-term or final exams. It usually comes in the form of a written exam and seldom through a performance task.

While these vary from each other, they are all considered to be important in the teaching and learning process.

100

Good teaching is giving more of the right questions than giving the right answers. Thus, it is the responsibility of teachers to provide different assessment strategies every single day so that the students will be given the opportunity to discover and explore. According to our cooperating teacher, she uses different assessment strategies both during the face-to-face and virtual classes. She was able to consider that students learn best when they are given variety of activities that will tickle their minds and will not bore their being. Every now and then, she uses different assessment strategies. If she uses written activity for this week, she will use a video making activity for the other week. The process goes on and on as she does not stick to one activity. She tries her best to reconstruct activities so that she will gain the attention of her students.

What will happen if he/she uses the same assessment strategy every day?

While she is not using the same assessment strategy every day, she gave as a scenario wherein she let us put ourselves in the shoe of the students who are having the same activities. Indeed, it bores me knowing that I must do written works every week. I do not just want to settle on writing or answering modules. I also want to try different things like video making, infographics making, and other stuffs like that. In that way, I will be able explore new things and discover something different in me.

She added that if teachers use the same assessment strategy every day, the students will be less motivated to work. They will no longer have the eagerness to work on their activities that will affect their grades.

With that, I have realized that it is better to give activities with openended questions and not just activities with right answers. In that way, students will be able to discover something new and that will allow them to grow and develop holistically.

101

What strategies he/she uses to address the individual differences of the students? After being exhausted in teaching the topics to be discussed, teachers expect results from their students – at the end of every topic.

Based on the three types of assessment strategies, she often uses summative assessment. Summative assessment aims to evaluate student learning and academic achievement at the end of a term, year or semester by comparing it against a standard. Summative assessments often have a high point value, take place under controlled conditions, and therefore have more visibility.

Our cooperating teacher told us the summative assessments are usually utilized in the Junior High School since it is the most common type of assessment. Teachers use this type of assessment because the moment you give the assessment, you are already measuring how did the students digest all the topics being discussed. On the other hand, she added that summative assessments sometimes do not guarantee full assessment. Why? Because some of the students do not take the test seriously.

While summative assessment has been the most popular type of assessment, teacher should find a way to at least modify the way they assess the students. They should at least try using performance based summative assessments and not on pure written works.

At the end of the day, teachers have their own strategies in the teaching and learning process. The strategies of teachers vary as they have different learners with different capabilities. 102

Which is the most important?

Teachers have their own way to provide quality education for all. They have the right to choose whatever strategy that they would wish to utilize. In the perspective of our cooperating teacher, she considers all the three types of assessment to be important in the teaching and learning process. These three types of assessment work together in order to help the teacher assess the performance of their students inside the class. First, the

diagnostic

assessment is important in knowing

the

background knowledge of their students regarding a specific topic. In that way, it will be easier on the part of the teacher to pinpoint the strengths and weaknesses of the students so that there will be a smooth flow in the class discussion. Second, the formative assessment is important so that the teacher will be able to give feedbacks to their students. This type of assessment is a great opportunity for teachers to let the students give their perception regarding the topic that they are discussing. She also added that by using this type of assessment, she is able to know the things that needs clarification. Third, the summative assessment is important for the reason that it will be one of the basis of the teachers in giving grades to their students. Through the written works and performance tasks of the students after each chapter, our cooperating teacher will have an idea if her students understood the lesson well and if they are able to apply the knowledge that they have gained. While it is true that all three types of assessment are important, I would consider the summative assessment as the most important of them all. Through summative assessment, I will be able to have a basis in grading my students with no biases.

103

How does assessment improve student's learning and the teacher's performance?

Assessment improves both student’s learning and teacher’s performance in the sense that it allows them to discover their knowledge and skills and how they are going to apply these in the teaching and learning process.

Assessment improves student’s learning through the quizzes, activities, tests, projects, and the like that they will be doing. Through these works, the students are able to hone their knowledge and skills. They review for their written examinations or they browse their notebooks in making their activities. Through assessment, students can apply their knowledge and skills. Also, they will be doing their best to get and maintain a high grade for the assessment serves as the basis of their teacher in the computation of the grades.

On the other hand, assessment also improves the teacher’s performance. Their strategies in teaching affect the scores or the performances of their students. If students fail to get high scores in the assessment, there must be something wrong with the strategies of the teacher. Now, given the situation, the teacher should try to revisit the exam or the activity that he or she gave and assess if the item shall be removed, retained, or revised. Remember, the teacher can think of other assessments, but the teacher can never change the objectives.

Moreover, teachers who develop useful assessments, provide corrective instruction, and give students second chances to demonstrate success can improve their instruction and help students learn. It is indeed true that assessment allows both students and teachers to be productive and at the same time creative as they continue to quest for a quality education for all.

At the end of the day, assessments are vital components in our efforts to improve education. It may be challenging for us, teachers, to provide different assessment strategies every single day, but always remember that it will be worth it because we are doing this not only for our professional development but also for the growth of our students.

104

IMPORTANCE OF ASSESSMENT

Assessment is today’s means of modifying tomorrow’s instruction. With the help of assessment, teachers and students are able to test different types of assessment that can be applied today and can be adopted by the future generations.

Based on the interview with our cooperating teacher, I was able to realize that if a topic to be discussed needs planning, so with the assessment. It is a rigorous process for the assessment should be suitable with the learning objectives and with the capabilities of the learners.

Further, the three types of assessment are all important in the teaching and learning process. They play different roles in assessing the students when it comes to their knowledge, understanding, and processing. Through these three types of assessment, teachers have a basis in the computation of the grades of their students and can avoid biases.

Moreover, assessment being important both from teachers and students, it should be a continuous process. Effective teachers see assessment opportunities in ongoing classroom situations. They continually attempt to learn about student’s way of thinking and understanding, making it relevant to current learning tasks and objectives.

105

In addition, if teachers dig deeper to the importance of assessment, they will be able to discover its real essence to education. First is that teachers will find out what the students know (knowledge), second is to find out what the students can do and how well they can do it (skill and performance), third is to find out how students go about the task of doing their work (process), fourth is to find out how students feel about their work (motivation and effort), and lastly to assess the physical environment. These are just some of the importance of assessment, but they are considered as the most essential ones.

Also, I have learned that assessment can identify individual educational needs of all students. It can also be a way to inform them about their specific performances and achievements through their grades. Through this, we, teachers, are able to utilize approaches that are personalized to the needs of our students.

After all, assessment is a great avenue for promoting a learning environment that is free from biases by providing the students varied assessment strategies. Through the different strategies, students can bring out their own knowledge and skills without the fear of failing.

106

CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK

We all need people who will give us feedback. In that way, we can improve ourselves. Providing

constructive

feedback

to

students

is

quite

a

challenging job for teachers especially that students may feel hurt with these feedbacks. However, they need give feedbacks in order for them to correct their students as early as possible for their own good.

According to our cooperating teacher, the best way to give constructive feedback after the student’s performance. Nevertheless, she told us that she is doing it indirectly. When she gives feedback, it is in general. For her, it is more humane if she generalizes her feedback so that the student/s will not be ashamed in class.

She also discussed to us that there are two sides of a cent. If she gives the feedback during the student’s performance, the student will lose her concentration and her confidence that will affect the overall impact of the performance. On the other hand, if she gives the feedback after, the student can either take it positively or negatively. Even if we say it is a constructive feedback, we cannot control the minds of our students, we cannot control their way of thinking.

107

Further, she asked us, observers, if we were in the shoes of her students, what would we feel? It would be hypocrite to say that I am not hurt. Maybe, there is a part of me, especially my ego, that will be hurt. Afterwards, I can move on from that matter and will use it as my inspiration to be better.

It is indeed a little bit tricky to give constructive feedback to students, but we need to do so. In that way, we will be able to teach our students to be the best version of themselves. We shall give feedbacks that will challenge them for their growth and development.

If we continue to tolerate their mistakes, they will never learn. But, if we correct them the way they should be corrected, they will thank us for doing so.

108

How does giving feedback help her in her instructional decisions?

Feedback is one of the most effective teaching and learning strategies and has an immediate impact on learning progress. High quality feedback is specific and on-going. Thus, feedback should always be a part of the teaching and learning process. In the classroom, giving feedbacks can be implemented by any teacher who is interested in shifting the focus of his or her students from their final grades to mastery of the material itself. Feedback is commentary on the student work, individualized to best accommodate for the needs of each student, personally. According to our cooperating teacher, giving feedback help her instructional decisions since she is able to determine if there is a progress or deterioration between and among her students. If she gives feedback, she will observe her students if they will improve themselves or they will choose not to care at all. One concrete example of giving feedback that helps the teachers in their instructional decisions is during the checking of their test papers. Our cooperating teacher told us that it is important to give feedback to the answers of the students in general. There should be a discussion between and among the answers of her students so that she will have an idea on which part of the test is the easiest and the most difficult for them. Another example is through the feedback that teachers are giving after their performance tasks. Based on what our cooperating teacher, giving feedbacks after their performance tasks will be a great way for students to know whether they have met the rubrics or not. It is also the best time to congratulate the students and to suggests things for the improvement of their future presentations.

109

Giving away feedback does not necessarily mean scolding the students. Sometimes, there are also good feedbacks. This type of feedback recognizes the efforts of the students regarding their performance or their output. Through this type of feedback, they will be inspired to work on their progress and development. Moreover, based on my experiences, when teachers give feedback to my works, I feel that he or she is monitoring me. In that way, I am motivated to do more and be more. I have this feeling inside me that I want to work harder so that I will continue to receive feedbacks from my teachers that will contribute a lot in my development. Positive or not, I am thankful that my teachers are giving feedbacks because this will help me assess my strengths and weaknesses. Thus, I am a living proof that feedbacks of teachers contribute a lot to a student’s development.

110

BEST PRACTICES IN GIVING FEEDBACK

Considering the fact that teachers have their own strategies in the teaching and learning process, they also have their best practices regarding

a

specific

area

in

the

teaching

profession.

The best practice in giving feedback that our cooperating teacher is utilizing is the generalization of feedbacks after discussions or after performances. According to her, she considers this as her best practice in giving feedback because she will not build fear towards her students. She knows the feeling that when they are given negative feedback in front of everyone, students will be ashamed, and their confidence will go down. Generalizing is better because it will cater everyone and not only one.

111

Through

generalization,

she

considers

the

followings ways to give the most effective feedback. First, it should be goal-oriented. Feedback should be tied

to

SMART

(specific,

measurable,

attainable,

reliable, time bound) learning goals, objectives, or standards. When giving feedback, teachers should link comments to the expectations laid out in the assignment prompt and rubric. Second, it should be prioritized. Feedback should be concise and focused on the areas of strength and growth that will have the greatest impact on the student's learning. It isn't feasible or advisable to provide feedback on every aspect of student work. Third, it should be student friendly. An encouraging, positive tone will go far in helping students accept your feedback and apply it to future work. Be sure to use language that is clear and not too technical. Lastly, it should be ongoing, consistent and timely. This means that students need ample opportunities to use feedback and that feedback must be accurate, trustworthy and stable. When feedback isn’t timely, students are disengaged and demotivated. It’s important to build regular feedback loops into the teaching practice.

We have our own best practices. We should never judge other teachers in the strategies. Maybe, these are their teaching strategies that they found to be efficient and effective for their students.

112

114

IMPORTANCE OF PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE (PTC)

Parents’ involvement in the education of their children has a big impact in their overall performance. If parents and teachers work together, they can produce individuals who are beyond capable in reaching their dreams and in changing the community for a better place to live in. Parent-Teacher Association is an organization of local groups of teachers and the parents of their students that works for the improvement of the schools and the benefit of the students. On the other hand, ParentTeacher Conference is a meeting between parents and the class adviser in order to discuss matters with the progress of their children, problems that they are encountering, projects that they would like to implement, and the like. Thus, both PTA and PTC are important in the education of every student. Parent Teacher Conference is a great opportunity to share academic progress and growth based on classroom observations, testing data, assessments, portfolios, and assignments. Teachers are using PTA meetings or PTCs to report the class standing of their children. The class adviser can give the report card of his or her students so that the parents will have an idea on their children’s education. Moreover, PTC is also a great time to learn from parents or guardians so that teachers be better informed about students' strengths, needs, behaviors, and learning styles. Through this activity, the parents and guardians will have an idea with the behaviors of their children. How are they inside the class? Are they doing well in their studies? Are they always maintaining a good attitude? And questions like that.

115

Further, it is an opportunity to discuss enrichment or intervention strategies to support students' learning. Parents should expect that their children are not always good. They are not perfect and that is okay. It is part of their growth and development. Through the PTC, class advisers and subject teachers can be reached out by parents whenever they would like to ask questions regarding their children. If they are not satisfied with the grades of their children, they can easily approach the teachers concerned and will try to ask for some tips or ways on how are they going to improve themselves. Lastly, PTC is a good avenue for parents and teachers to discuss the projects that they would like to implement. It can either be in the beautification of their classroom, socialization programs for their children, and the like. Through this, parents and teachers will also develop a harmonious relationship with each other. If teachers and parents cannot work together, it will adversely affect the development of a student. Teachers and parents should work together in order to monitor the child inside the four walls of the classroom and inside the four walls of their home. After all, teachers and parents are good partners in developing the students holistically.

116

How does assessment improve student's learning and the teacher's performance?

Parent-Teacher Conference will never go out of style. It has been and it will always be a part of every child’s education. If I were to conduct a PTC in the near future, I would consider the following agendas. First, I will remind the parents the dos and don’ts inside the school. This would include the proper haircut of boys, no wearing of dark make up for girls, wearing of complete uniform with identification card, and the like. If parents know the dos and don’ts of the school, they can teach their children on what are the right things to do. Second, I would tell them the common complains or suggestions of their subject teachers. In that way, parents will have an idea on how the students deal with their teachers. They will be able to correct their children and change their bad attitudes. Third, I would ask them to initiate a project that would beautify the classroom or if not beautify, at least provide an environment that is conducive for learning. I will give the floor to the PTA officers of my advisory class so that they will be the one to suggest for projects that the body will approve or disapprove. Fourth, I would give their report cards. Aside from that, I will conduct a mini recognition program inside the class. I will recognize the students’

achievements

both

in

academic,

extra-curricular,

and

behaviors. Through this, parents will be encouraged to attend meetings because of their pride and joy for the achievement of their children. For now, these will be included in my agenda. I am sure that in the near future, I will be including more depending on the needs of my learners. Rest assured that I will be using the Parent-Teacher Conference as a platform to maintain a harmonious relationship for the continuous development of the students inside the school and at their homes. 117

How will you communicate the failing grade of a student to the parent?

Sharing news to parents, sometimes give teachers mixed emotions. Sometimes it excites them, but most of the time, it gives them nervewracking moment. Why? Because they know the feeling that parents may feel ashamed of or it will just add more stress to their life knowing that they are working to provide for their family too.

As a future teacher, I will try to set a schedule that will be the best time to talk to the parents of my students with failing grades. I don’t want to talk to them during the PTA meeting because they may be ashamed of and it will be the reason why they won’t be joining the succeeding meetings. If possible, I will let them stay and talk to them one by one so that we will be able to have a heart-to-heart talk.

Moreover, I will be as calm as possible whenever I will be communicating to the parents of my students who have a failing grade. I will try to explain to them the different factors that have affected the grades of their children. It can either be their performance in class, their requirements, their behavior, and the like.

Further, I will try to ask the parents if they have problems at home. I will try to assess their background because sometimes, the family problems of the students affect their performance inside the class. Also, it affects their behavior and their relationship with their classmates and teachers.

118

In addition, I will try to remind the parents of my students to monitor their children every now and then. They should try to ask their children regarding their requirements in school, their needs, the problems that they are encountering, their experiences, and the like. If the students feel that their parents are interested in their studies, they will feel more motivated to work on their education.

Lastly, I will try to tell them that they should not consider their children as a failure. They should not scold their children for having a failing grade. Instead, they should try to communicate to their children and inspire them that they can do better next time. In that way, children will not lose their interest in their education and that they will strive for the better.

Having students with a failing grade is normal. It is part of their learning. However, we, teachers, should try our best to develop our students. In that development, their parents should be involved too.

119

TYPES OF ASSESSMENT

Jane D. Hull once said, “at the end of the day, the most overwhelming

key

to

a

child’s

success

is

the

positive

involvement of parents.” It is undeniably true that when parents involve themselves in the education of their children, they will see positive results through their performance in class. Students have the motivation to work harder because they know that their parents are supporting them along the way. However, if parents cannot involve themselves, they will see negative results through failing marks over and over.

If I were to suggest to the parent of a student who got a failing mark twice in the subject, I would say that he or she needs to monitor the child. Maybe, just maybe, the child is not motivated enough because

he cannot feel any support from his parents. He or she should ask the child if he needs help, has a problem, if something is bothering him, and the like. Through communication, parents will be able to guide their children with their studies.

Another suggestion is for the parent to enroll a child to a tutoring service. In that way, the tutor may help the child in honing his knowledge and skills in that specific subject. It will be a one-on-one learning and I am sure that the child will be able to focus on his studies.

120

On the other hand, if parents cannot afford to enroll their child to a tutoring service, they can be the tutor of their own child. They should try their best to teach their child in that specific subject that he got failed into. Not only that, but parents can also teach their child the other subjects so that while the child is learning, they are also having their family bonding.

Lastly, I would remind them not to belittle their child. As much as possible, they should inspire and motivate their child to do better next time. It may not be easy to accept a child who got a failing mark twice, but it does not make him less of a person. It only means that the child is trying, and that the child needs more assistance.

Parents’ involvement matters. No matter how busy they are trying to provide for their family, they should find time to look over the education of their children. They need your help and your guidance. Along the way, they may fall, but parents should be there to not to catch them but to teach them to get up on their own.

With the love and support of their parents, children will always be motivated to do more and be more – not only for themselves but also for their families. 121

Thus, it is also the responsibility of teachers to hear the parents’ complaints with sympathy and understanding.

Article XI: The Teacher as a Person Teachers are projected to maintain a dignified personality whether in school, at home, or elsewhere which could serve as a model, worthy of emulation by learners, peers, and other individuals in the community.

Article XII: Disciplinary Action Any violation of any provision of the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers shall be sufficient ground for the imposition against the erring teacher of the disciplinary action consisting of revocation of his Certification of Registration and License as a Professional Teacher, suspension from the practice of teaching profession, or reprimand or cancellation of his temporary/special permit under causes specified in Sec. 23, Article III or R.A. No. 7836, and under Rule 31, Article VIII, of the Rules and Regulations Implementing R.A. 7836.

Article XIII: Effectivity The Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers have been approved by the Philippine Regulation Commission and took effect 60 days following its publication in the official Gazette and any newspaper or general circulation, whichever was made earlier. 127

What is the importance of the Code of Ethics to teachers?

Karl Menninger, one said, “What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches.” Teachers cannot be measured on how intelligent they are. Teachers are being measured through their whole being. According to the Department of Education, the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers serves as guide for teachers specifically to new teachers for them to exhibit proper behavior to the learning community at all times. It is imperative that teachers observe and practice this set of ethical and moral principles, standards, and values. They are expected to follow these at all times. Furthermore, Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers play an important role in the personal growth and professional development of teachers. The Code of Ethics serve as the bible of the teachers. Why? Because this contains their guiding principles so that they will be able to fulfill their duties and responsibilities without harming anyone. Likewise, if teachers are knowledgeable enough to the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers, they will be able to know their rights. By knowing their rights, they are protected under the rule of law and that no one can harm them. However, being knowledgeable with the Code of Ethics does not guarantee the full implementation of this matter. Teachers should be able to apply these ethical principles and moral standards. It is nonsense and useless if teachers only know the Code of Ethics but are not able to apply in their day-to-day interaction with students, parents, and stakeholders. Thus, knowing and doing must go together. On the other hand, teachers are not perfect. There will be times in their teaching career that they will commit mistakes. However, we should not judge them. A single mistake does not measure the worth of teachers. We all commit mistakes, and it is part of learning. The only issue in committing mistakes is repeating it all over again, at that time, it is no longer a mistake, but it is already a choice. To sum it up, teachers need to follow the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers at all times. This will contribute a lot in their development and in influencing other people in the community. Remember, people look up to teachers. With that, we are expected to be a role model to our fellowmen.

How does assessment improve student's learning and the teacher's performance? “Good, better, best. Never let it rest until your good is better and your better is best.” – Tim Duncan Our society have high expectations to teachers. They always expect teachers to be at their best every single day. Aside from discussing the topics to be learned by the students, they are also teaching the students on how they should act inside and outside the school. With the help of the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers, they are not only developing professionally but they are also growing personally. Through these set of ethical principles, they are able to act accordingly – inside and outside the school premises. Further, the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers changes the personal lives of the teacher. One example would include their way of dressing up. Students look up to teachers that is why it is important for teachers to wear something modest all the time. They should not be wearing something that is not pleasing to the eyes. Second example would include their communication skills. Teachers should refrain from talking bad words. They should try to talk as calm and possible. Whether they are talking to their colleagues, students, parents, and stakeholders – their humility should always be observed. Third example is their social skills. Teachers should be able to develop a harmonious relationship with the people inside and outside the school. They should be able to maintain a relationship that is free from biases. No matter who they are, what they have, or where did they come from – teachers should treat them the same way. Fourth example is their way of responding to challenges. Teachers are taught to always have a positive outlook in life. Even during the most difficult times, they should not bring their problems in school. They should set their minds that this too shall pass. To sum the examples up, the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers develops the teachers holistically that contributes a lot in their personal lives. Through the set of moral standards and ethical principles, teachers are being taught of how things should work once they enter the teaching profession. They may be inside the school or not, they should always apply the Code of Ethics in their lives because every move that they make, makes a difference. As teachers strive to be the best version of themselves, they are being guided by the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. They are the role models in our society that is why we expect much from them. However, teachers should not be pressured by the society because a single mistake will never make them less of a person. It is part of their learning as they grow personally and develop professionally. 129

What are the strategies he/she is using to make the students participate in class?

Children do not care what a teacher knows unless they know the teacher cares. Being a teacher does not only require intelligence, but it also requires how teachers show empathy to each

and every one in the class.

Teachers have great influence in the lives of their learners. They are expected to be professionally competent

in

the

practice

of

their

profession.

Moreover, they need also to possess good reputation not only in the school but in the entire community. Having

this

big

responsibility

in

the

learning

environment, teachers must be guided by the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers which comprehensively discuss the different expectations from a teacher.

The Code of Ethics can influence the teacher’s competence in different aspects. First, their mental ability. Based on the first part of the preamble, teachers are duly licensed professionals. Thus, teachers have undergone a bachelor’s degree in education and took the Licensure Examination for Teachers. Through these requirements in being a full-pledged teacher, we can say that they are equipped with enough knowledge in the area of specialization that they will be teaching. 130

Second, their social ability. According to the Article III – The Teacher and the Community, teachers should be able to link the school and the community. By following this, teachers are able to develop their social skills especially when they are communicating

with students, parents, colleagues, and stakeholders.

Third, their physical ability. The moment a teacher enters a classroom, students already look up to them. Based on the Article IV – A Teacher and the Profession, teachers are expected to have a decent living. This includes their overall appearance, their way of life, and other things that are associated in the physical development of teachers.

Lastly, their spiritual ability. Teachers following the Code of

Ethics is already a manifestation that they are being developed spiritually. Through the set of ethical principles and moral standards, teachers will be able to teach the students how to act appropriately.

By strictly following the Code of Ethics, teachers are able to develop themselves that will make them teachers who are globally competent to rock the world.

131

How will you promote the Code of Ethics to fellow teachers?

A professional teacher is not an island. He/she works with other professional teachers, some more or less experienced than he/she is. Colleagues are teachers, parents, and stakeholders. How teacher relates to his/her colleagues in the teaching profession determines if they become one’s greatest allies and supporters or one’s greatest enemies.

I will be able to promote the Code of Ethics to my fellow teachers by being a good example to them. How would I be able to promote the Code of Ethics if I, myself, would not be able to follow these principles? Thus, there is a need for me to practice the Code of Ethics at all times, inside and outside the school premises.

If being a good example is not enough, maybe we can have a small group discussion regarding the Code of Ethics. I am sure that they will be encouraged to join the discussion since it is will not be a formal discussion. It will be a casual talk with them regarding the principles and values that we should follow.

132

Further, if small group discussions will not be enough, maybe I can suggest to our school principal to conduct seminars or trainings in the Revisiting of the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. In that way, all will be joining the seminar and there will be speakers who are knowledgeable enough in explaining these principles.

These are some ways to promote Code of Ethics to my fellow teachers. While there are different ways to promote these principles, to me, these are the most realistic things to do. It does not need to be expensive or grand, what will matter the most is the learnings of the teachers that will be manifested in the following days or months.

After all, no man is an island – a professional teacher is not an island. They all need to work together in order to fulfill their duties and responsibilities upholding the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers for the holistically development of their students.

MY IDEAL TEACHER

Jodi Picoult one said, the fact that you worry about being a good teacher, means that you already are one. Reminiscing the good old days, I can still remember how I wanted to become a teacher ever since I was a little girl. Now that I am one step closer to being a teacher, I have realized that it is not as easy as talking in front of the class. It takes a lot of effort to be an effective and efficient teacher. Based on my previous experiences, I have met teachers who became my inspiration – both their positive and negative attitudes. That is the reason why I set standards so high by the time that I will already be a full-pledged teacher. My ideal teacher is someone who is packed with enough knowledge in her field of specialization. She has finished her bachelor’s degree and have passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers. Also, she will be continuing her graduate studies – both in masteral and doctoral degrees. Further, she attends different trainings, seminars, and workshops that will further develop their knowledge and skills in the teaching and learning process. Further, my ideal teacher is someone who is creative enough in providing the students different strategies. She does not only use some strategies but she uses different strategies that will suit the capabilities of her learners. Being creative means allowing yourself to think of activities or assessment that will allow the students to enhance their Higher Order Thinking Skills.

134

Moreover, she is emphatic. She does not let the students feel ashamed in class. Rather, she gives her students the opportunity to improve themselves if they commit mistakes. The teacher gives constructive criticisms to her students that will challenge them to be better. In addition, the teacher should make the students realize that receiving criticisms is not actually bad. It only means that there are still some things that we need to learn. Last but not the least, she upholds set of ethical principles and moral values according to the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. If she is able to apply these principles in her profession, she will be able to be the best teacher that she never had during her schooling years. I will be forever thankful to my teachers who became my inspiration – especially my idols, my mom and my dad. Both of them are teachers. With that, they raised me to become someone who is always ready to help and who is always willing to learn. I may not be the best student-teacher at present, but I know that my parents are proud of me. I know that they are waiting for that day when I will be able to put into reality the qualities of my ideal teacher. Fears and questions may be present at this time if how I will be able to become the ideal teacher that I want. Nevertheless, I am ready to conquer the world of teaching profession as I improve myself to become the best teacher that I can be. I am much more excited to what is coming… Forever thankful for teachers!

My Cooperating Teacher’s Educational Philosophy

Teachers have their own beliefs in teaching. They have their own philosophies both in life and in teaching that they utilize in their dayto-day lives. Some of their philosophies were created before entering the teaching profession and some were created after they get to taste the life of being in the teaching profession.

Spending 39 years and counting in the teaching profession, our cooperating teacher has always been guided by her philosophy, “teaching is my vocation.” Never in her life that she imagined herself working in other fields. She believed that she was destined to teach and to touch the lives of other people, forever.

It has been her calling to be in the teaching profession. By the time she finished her degree, she went to Ilocos Sur National High School to be a substitute teacher. However, she chose to stay at the University of Northern Philippines for 39 years now. She told us that never in a day that she had regrets in being a teacher. She has been called to be a teacher and she will never get tired in doing so. The love for teaching is also part of her vocation. She loves to inspire her students because she wants to see them succeed in life. The success of her students is part of hers too. Whenever her former students visit and updates her with their careers, she feels a sense of pride knowing that they consider her to be part of their success.

136

Further, teaching may not be a lucrative profession, but she stayed. No matter how hard life gets, she chose to stay in the teaching profession. She told us that money cannot buy happiness. Seeing her students learn and develop makes her the richest person in the entire world.

Never in her life that she felt tired in teaching. Sometimes, there are challenges along the way, especially in this time of pandemic. She is not that literate when it comes to technology, but she tries her best to cope up with this kind of setup. She always finds time to deepen her knowledge in the usage of technology. Thus, she is always willing to learn for her students.

Her story is just as amazing as she is. 39 years in the teaching profession is not a joke. She almost spends her whole life inspiring her students. With that, I am inspired to do the same.

137

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

“Teaching is my passion; serving and caring has always been my fulfillment.” – N.P.F.A. Through the years, I have been a part of the Supreme Student Government family. I have experienced leading the whole student body and that deepen my love for other people. It challenged me to always seek for the betterment of everyone and not only for myself. With that, I have realized that the school will always be my home. From that time on, I have realized that 10 years from now, the podium that I am using in speaking in front of my fellow students will still be the podium that I will be using in speaking in front of students and fellow teachers. Further, it is fulfilling to see the students to succeed in life knowing that you are part of their success. It is our responsibility

the

students the basic knowledge and the most essential competencies that they need for them to succeed.

As

from a young girl to an empowered woman, I came to realize that teaching is not only teaching itself. Rather, teaching is also learning. I have accepted the challenge that I will be forever open to new learnings as I quest to become an effective and efficient teacher. If I am not willing to learn, how am I going to teach the next Thus,

generations? as a teacher

embracing teaching as a passion, I need to learn and do everything that I can to provide quality education for my students.

138

While it is not easy to do this, I should bear in mind that I am not only here to accept my monthly salary, but I am also here so that I can help my students in any way that I can.

Moreover, I made existentialism as my inspiration in coming up with my teaching philosophy. Considering teaching as my passion, I need to help my students understand and

appreciate

themselves

as

individuals who accept complete responsibility for their thoughts, feelings, and actions. Thus, it is my role to help the students define their own essence by exposing them to various paths that they take in life by

an

Additionally, I should be giving my students wide variety of options from which to choose from. I need to provide my students with vicarious experiences that will help unleash their own creativity and selfexpression. Thus, it is my duty to encourage my students to develop their creativity and widen their imagination more than copying and imitating established models. Also, given my philosophy in teaching, I should focus on my students and their differences. After all, learning is self-paced and self-directed. It includes a great deal of individual contact with me, as the teacher, who relates to each other openly and honestly. To be able to realize this, I should remain non-judgmental and take care not to impose my values on my students since values are personal and we all have our own way of thinking.

environment in which they freely choose their own preferred way.

139

I may not yet be a full-pledged teacher, but I am more than excited to be one. I can already imagine myself teaching concepts to my students and learning from them. In addition, I cannot wait to see my students succeed in their own ways knowing that I am part of it.

Two to three years from now, I will consider my teaching philosophy, teaching is my passion; serving and caring has always been my fulfillment – always in all ways.

March 16, 2021 Today started our first day of Experiential Learning in the Laboratory Schools. Our cooperating teacher, Mrs. Rosalin Pascua, introduced us to her students in Grade 8 – Pedro Bukaneg where we will be having our observation for the whole second semester. The google meeting started at 8:10 but we waited for the students to join. I was nervous because it is my first time meeting them. However, my fears went away the moment they called me “Ma’am”. I feel so honored knowing that they already consider me as a teacher even if I am still a student-teacher. While waiting for the students, our cooperating teacher checked the attendance and asked them if they have already submitted their modules. There were one or two students who were answering the questions yet there were 20 students who joined the meeting. Most of them opted to off their cameras as well as their microphones. At the back of my mind, why are these students not answering? However, as they go on with the discussion, some of them participated. Before starting a new topic, she discussed last week’s activities. They were asked to read different magazines and articles of their choice and made a reflection out of it. The sharing went well since they shared their personal experiences. Some were about entertainment, some were about national and local news, and some were about stories about puppy love which they were interested in. After that, our cooperating teacher told her students that “mabuti at nalaman ninyo ang mga popular na babasahin na mga ito, kung tungkol naman sa inyong mga crush, huwag madaliin mga anak sapagkat ang lahat ng bagay ay nangyayari sa tamang panahon,” and the whole class agreed. After that, she introduced to her students the new topic which is about Climate Change. The students were somehow active in answering since they are aware of this issue. However, I have observed that most of them are not that good in expressing themselves using the Filipino language. Nevertheless, our cooperating teacher translates their answers in Filipino afterwards. In addition, our cooperating teacher gave the activities that the students need to pass next week. They were asked to make a social awareness campaign through a poster – slogan. She allowed them to pick any environmental issue that they would like to create. Moreover, before allowing them to pick any environmental issue, she asked her students to vote whether she gives the topic, or they will be the one to choose any of the existing issues. Before ending the class, she asked the students as to what they have learned in the discussion. Our class ended up with a conclusion from our cooperating teacher stating, “Ang kalikasan ay kailangang pangalagaan para ang mga tao ay patuloy na mamuhay nang matiwasay.” I will forever remember this day for it was my first time to be called “Ma’am”, not by my classmates or my friends, but real students from Grade 8 – Pedro Bukaneg. Marked this day, March 16, 2021.

142

March 23, 2021 It is our second day of Experiential Learning with Grade 8 – Pedro Bukaneg. Today, we were added on their group chat, and we are officially members of their growing family. As usual, the google meeting started at 8:10 following the Class Schedule. However, only few of the students have joined the meeting. While waiting for them, our cooperating teachers asked her students if they can contact their classmates so that we can now start the discussion. Further, we waited for almost five minutes but only 15 of them joined the meeting. Our cooperating teacher decided to just go on with the discussion because she told us that maybe, most of them have poor internet connection and some may not afford to buy mobile loads. Going back to their last activity, she asked her students to recite heir slogan in class and further discuss it. In that way, she can assure to herself that her students were the ones who made their outputs and not their parents or their siblings. She gave them three minutes to prepare. The students presented their slogans and these were some of them: 1) Kinabukasan mo, Protektahan mo, 2) Panatilihing maaliwalas para maging ligtas, 3) Iligtas ang mundo, Iligtas ang hinaharap, 4) Mamili ka: Panandaliang Kaligayahan o Maayosn a Kalikasan, 5) Magtanim para ang susunod na henerasyon ay may aanihin, and many more. All of them were commendable and our cooperating teacher recognized each and everyone of them. While doing the activity, I have observed that after a student’s presentation, she sees to it that she complements his/her work and gives suggestions or comments for future use. She does not build any fear towards her students because she even encourages each and every one of them to participate. After the presentation, she introduced to us the song “Masdan mo ang Kaligiran” by Asin. It was my first time to sing that song in front of students. I was afraid that I may not give justice to the song, but I heard them saying, “Go, ma’am” and that pushed me to sing no matter how ugly my voice is. With the song that she have introduced, she then asked her students what are their ways in taking care of the environment and some of them answered. She concluded the lesson saying, “natutuwa ako at sa murang edad ninyo ay mulat na kayo sa katotohanan lalo na sa pangangalaga sa ating kalikasan.” Meanwhile, before ending the meeting she told her students to borrow a book in Florante at Laura for this will be their next topic. She even added that they need to have a background knowledge with this so that they will be able to actively participate in the discussion next meeting. Tuesdays make me excited because of my Experiential Learning. I am learning a lot and discovering new things that I have never experienced before – especially singing.

143

April 6, 2021 After how many weeks of not seeing each other, today is the day to meet each other again. It is our third day of Experiential Learning with Grade 8 – Pedro Bukaneg. Most of the students are still having their vacation, I guess? There were only seven of them who joined the meeting today out of 39 students. We waited for almost 10 minutes. While waiting, she said that during the PTA meeting, she told the parents to at least find the ways and means to let their children join in the online class since it is only once a week. However, with this number of students today, she feels sad knowing that not even half of the class joined. After some time, we formally started at 8:20. Our cooperating teacher decided to screen record our google meeting so that the students who were not able to join the meeting can still watch the video. In that way they will be able to cope up with the new topic which is the Florante at Laura. The discussion started with a question if they can still remember the Ibong Adarna when they were in Grade 7. After which, our cooperating teacher started introducing the Florante at Laura by telling the history of it. Further, I have observed that as she goes on with the discussion, she sees to it that she asks questions at her students to make the class more interactive. Questions were based on the discussion which is the “Kaligirang Pangkasaysayan ng Florante at Laura.” In addition, she discussed the importance of studying “Florante at Laura” Some of these were: 1) Wastong pagpapalaki sa anak, 2) Pagiging mabuting magulang, 3) Pag-iingat sa mga makasarili, 4) Pagmamalasakit sa bayan, 5) Pag-iingat sa pagpili ng mga sakim sa kayamann, 6) Pagtulong sa kapwa, and many more. After the history, she discussed the characters in “Florante at Laura” and their significance both from the story and from our society today. She also made mentioned that the characters were divided into two, the Christians and the Muslims. The seven students who attended the class were so active in answering because they were able to know the characters beforehand. With that, our cooperating teacher recognized their good work and told them to keep it up. Before ending the class, she asked them to create a front cover of a book, with their own title and with their own design. The book’s content will be their experiences in the new normal. This activity will be passed next week to give ample time for the students to finish their activities in other subjects. Today, I have realized that the socio-economic status of every student adversely affects their education. Sadly, they cannot do anything about it.

144

April 7, 2021 It is our first day of Experiential Learning with Grade 9 – Gregorio del Pilar. I was nervous at first because they seemed to be so serious. However, the moment that they have called me “Ma’am,” I felt relieved. The google meeting started at 9:15. Our cooperating teacher checked the attendance of her students and asked them to contact their classmates. After some time of waiting, she started the lecture on the history of “Noli Me Tangere.” First, she asked her students as to what is the significance of studying this novel? And why is it considered to be an undying one? Almost all of them wanted to answer the questions and I was so happy to witness them, answering in Filipino language. Most of their answers were to know the history, to know more about the life of Rizal through this novel, and different issues from the past. In addition, they consider this to be undying because it is one of the most essential topics a student needs to take before moving on to the next grade level. Further, she allowed the students to ask some questions regarding their topic. Some of them were eager to learn and most of them showed nothing at all. At the back of my mind, maybe they are busy doing something or their internet connection is just slow. Nevertheless, our cooperating teacher managed to provide a healthy discussion. Before the dismissal, our cooperating teacher asked her students to answer two questions based on their opinion. The questions were, 1) Bakit isinama sa kurikulum ng high school ang pag-aaral ng nobelang “Noli Me Tangere?”, and 2) Bilang isang kabataan paano mapahahalagahan ang kabayanihan at mga nagawa ni Dr. Jose Rizal para sa ating bansa? Today, I have learned that when students are interested with the topic, the class becomes more interactive. I just hope this will continue as they go on with the different chapters of “Noli Me Tangere.”

145

April 20, 2021 It is the fourth day of our Experiential Learning with Grade 8 – Pedro Bukaneg. I wished that more students will be able to attend today and luckily, it happened. The class started at 8:15 with 19 students. Our cooperating teacher asked them why they were not able to join last week’s google meeting. Most of them said that their internet connection is slow and some of them said that they cannot afford to buy mobile load last week. It is painful to hear those words that is why our cooperating teacher uttered some words of encouragement. For today’s topic, she asked the students regarding the characters in “Florante at Laura.” It is good that those students who were absent last meeting were able to watch the recorded video of last week’s discussion. With that, they were able to join in the discussion. Furthermore, our cooperating teacher distinguish the characters who belong to Christians and who belong to Muslims. She also asked their significant roles in the story and in the society that we are living in today. After the lecture, she asked the students as to who their idol is based on the characters of the “Florante at Laura”. The students were very idealistic and based on their answers, I can say that most of them are fun of fiction stories. Meanwhile, my heart feels happy hearing the students speak Filipino language more fluently. They were able to use Filipino language in the course of their recitation. Indeed, the students of Grade 8 – Pedro Bukaneg are learning. Following the discussion, our cooperating teacher concluded the class by saying, “Ang mga tauhan sa Florante at Laura ang magpapaalala sa atin sa mga pangyayari sa nakaraan na maaari nating kapulotan ng aral.” With that, I ended up the meeting smiling knowing that the students are learning to love the Filipino language.

April 21, 2021

Today marks our second day of Experiential Learning with Grade 9 – Gregorio del Pilar. We are now part of their family since they have welcomed us in their class group chat. While waiting for the other students to join, our cooperating teacher asked the students if they have passed their requirements and if they have problems in class. After that, she reminded her students to always find time to relax even if they have a lot of things to do as part of motivating them. For their activity, she asked some of the students to share their answers in class for the discussion of their work that she gave last meeting. Only few of them shared their answers because most of them are not responding whenever our cooperating teacher asks them to open their camera or at least their microphone. Moreover, after the students presented their outputs, she gave her own thoughts with the questions that she asked last meeting. She further discussed the important of studying “Noli Me Tangere” and that there is a need for them to be patient enough in reading the chapters of it. She even added that it may be time-consuming to read every chapter of the novel, but it is worth the read. The novel is a reflection of the past that will help them appreciate more of their nationality and their nation in general. After the discussion, she took the remaining minutes to remind the class regarding their backlogs in her subject. She recognized those who have already passed their modules and encouraged those who have not yet submitted to finish their modules. In addition, she told them that even if it is late, it will still be accepted knowing that each and every one of them have their own way in coping up with the new normal of learning. As I end this journal, I just want to say that, day by day, I am slowly appreciating our cooperating teacher for being so patient with her students. Thus, I am inspired to do the same if I will already be a full-pledged teacher in the near future.

147

April 27, 2021 On the fifth day of our Experiential Learning, there were a lot of memories that I have remembered when I was still in Junior High School, hence the reminiscing of good old days. At 8:20, the google meeting started. Some of the Grade 8 – Pedro Bukaneg students were on cam and most of them are not. However, our cooperating teacher told them that it is okay to close their cameras if that is affecting their internet connection. Luckily, 12 of them attended the class, still not even half of it. She checked their attendance and asked them if they are still good or they are now overwhelmed with their requirements. Before starting the discussion, our cooperating teacher asked the students what their last topic was. They went back on the different characters in the “Florante at Laura” and gave their opinions regarding the significant roles of each character in the story. After which, she started discussing the content of “Florante at Laura” particularly the “Pagkakagapos ni Florante.” Whenever she wants to emphasize something in class, she asks her students some questions that will further discuss that particular topic. It gives them the opportunity to have more interaction. However, given the students that they have not yet read the whole “Florante at Laura”, some of them were not able to answer the questions. Still, our cooperating teacher was so patient in the delivery of instruction. Further, I have observed that whenever her students cannot understand the statements in “Florante at Laura”, she usually translates it mother tongue or she uses simpler terms for them to better understand the concept behind it. She is a great example since she shows empathy to her learners especially that they are not that good in using Filipino language in their day-to-day lives. Meanwhile, she gave the next activities for the students to work on. They were asked to answer some questions related to the history and characters of “Florante at Laura.” She warned her students to refrain searching the answers on the internet. She told them that she wants them to read their own thoughts and ideas as to what they have learned in class. Today, I have learned the value of staying positive even if it is hard. Being a positive thinker will lead me to a more serene life and life that is beyond the expectations of other people. Just like Florante, I should be positive all the time because it affects my whole being.

148

April 28, 2021 It is our third day of Experiential Learning with Grade 9 – Gregorio del Pilar. I was so excited to join the class knowing that their discussion will be the first three chapters of “Noli Me Tangere.” The formal discussion started at 9:30 for we have waited the other students to join the class. It has been said that they were late in joining the class for the reason that their first period dismissed them later than the scheduled time. Since the chapters in the “Noli Me Tangere” were too long, our cooperating teacher decided to retell the story using her own way of narration. I was impressed on how she managed to do it because it was so comprehensive and the main points were included. The chapters that she narrated were, 1) Isang Pagtitipon, 2) Si Crisostomo Ibarra, and 3) Ang Hapunan. After the narration, she asked her students regarding the societal issues that they have observed on chapters one to three. Almost everyone in the class shared their thoughts and ideas. With this, our cooperating teacher recognized their efforts in making the class more interactive even if there is no physical interaction that is happening between and among them. Further, our cooperating teacher used the answers of the students in relating them intro real life situations. She told them that the societal issues that they have mentioned earlier can still be observed even up to this time. Thus, she let the students speak about their experiences and observations with the societal issues that they have mentioned. Indeed, the students shows interest with the topic knowing that they have experienced it. In addition to that, our cooperating teacher allows each and every one of them to share their thoughts and ideas without favoritism. Everyone’s opinion is accepted and that there are no wrong answers. At the end of the day, I have realized that in order to have a more interactive discussion, the teacher and the students should work together.

May 5, 2021 It is already our fourth day of Experiential Learning with Grade 9 – Gregorio del Pilar. It feels like it is only our second. The google meeting started at 9:15 today. Our cooperating teacher checked their attendance first. Some of the students did not join the google meeting that is why she asked them to contact their classmates. However, after some time of waiting, no one has been added on the meeting. Maybe, they had a problem with their internet connection. For today’s discussion, our cooperating teacher discussed the next chapters of “Noli Me Tangere.” It started with Don Rafael Ibarra and his death, the motherly love of Sisa, and the wisdom of Pilosopo Tasyo. She used these three characters to inculcate in the minds of the students the importance of having a parent or a guardian who is always willing to love and guide you along the way. She added that they were the ones who taught their children to always chose what is right and just. After the narration, she asked her students to choose who among the three characters caught their hearts. Most of them chose Sisa because despite her flaws and imperfections, she proved to everyone that her love for her family will always be her top priority. Don Rafael Ibarra and Pilosopo Tasyo were chosen by few for the reason that their wisdom helps their children and the people around them to always chose what is right and just, for the betterment of the society. Before ending the meeting, she reminded her students to finish their modules and submit them on time. She even added that they do not need to be pressured with their classmates’ progress. What matters the most is that they are trying and that they are learning. It has been a fruitful discussion. I am happy that they are learning and that they are able to express themselves freely because of our cooperating teacher’s words of encouragement.

May 6, 2021 Sixth day in Experiential Learning with Grade 8 – Pedro Bukaneg. It only seems like yesterday; it was our first meeting with them. Indeed, time really flies so fast. At 8:15, the google meeting started. There were 19 of them who joined the class. With the number of students present, our cooperating teacher took the chance to ask her students if they are still okay or if they were having problems that they want to share. She also recognized them for being able to join the class despite the challenges in doing so. Before proceeding to the next part of “Florante at Laura,” our cooperating teacher asked the students if how important the “Ang Pagkakagapos ni Florante” is. Most of them answered the questions short but direct to the point. Moreover, their new topic is “ang pagbabalik ni Aladin sa pinaggapusan kay Florante.” She discussed the topic very well and even cited real life examples. Through these, the students were able to relate their life to Florante. In addition, she emphasized the phrase “mapagkandiling ama.” After which she asked her students regarding their relationship with their father. Here are some of their answers, 1) Maayos ang relasyon naming ng aking ama dahil hindi siya nawawalan ng oras sa akin, 2) Mamahalin ko nang buo ang aking ama sapagkat marami siyang kayang isakripisyo para sa kaniyang mga anak, 3) Harapin mo ang mga pagsubok sa buhay nang buong lakas at tapang, and many more. She concluded the class by recognizing the efforts of her students in actively participating in the discussion. She did not show any biases towards them since she was able to mention each and every one of them. Today, our cooperating teacher have proved to me that teaching is not only explaining the topics to be discussed. It is being able to teach them the most important values in life that they need to apply in their day-to-day activities. With the topic being discussed today, it taught the students to value their family, especially their father who sacrifices a lot to provide for their family.

May 11, 2021 It is our seventh day in our Experiential Learning with Grade 8 – Pedro Bukaneg. Today was so hot but then the topic was very interesting. The google meeting started at 8:30 for the reason that our cooperating teacher experienced technical difficulties. However, she managed to continue by finding ways to solve her problem. Thus, learning continues. There were only 15 students who were able to join the meeting. Most of them are the same students who always attends the online class. Before starting the discussion, she asked the students about their last topic. The topic for today was about the love of Florante to Laura. The students were very active, and it was my first time to see them very interested with their lesson. Maybe, they have their own crushes that they can relate to the story, or they just admire how Florante shows his love to Laura. Further, these were the lines that our cooperating teacher emphasized, “Ang pagibig ay makpangyarihan o pagsintang labis ng kapangyarihan. Sampung mag-aamang iyong nasasakupan, hahamakin ang lahat masunod ka lamang.” She told her students that when the person really loves someone, he or she is willing to do everything to make each other happy. Aside from that, she also discussed the two wild lions where she asked her students a challenging question. It goes like this, “Kung kaaway ninyo ang nakagapos at naroon ang dalawang mababangis na leon, ano ang gagawin ninyo?” I was impressed by the answers of the students because they have proved to me that faith in humanity have been restored. Before ending the discussion, the students were asked to make a monologue regarding “Ang Panaghoy ni Florante.” They are going to pass this activity next week through their google classroom. p After the class, it made me realize that everything happens at the right time and at the right place with the right person. There is nothing to rush because everything is planned according to His will.

May 12, 2021 It is the fifth day of our Experiential Learning with Grade 9 – Gregorio del Pilar. Sadly, there will only be two meetings left with them. While waiting for the other students to join, our cooperating teacher encouraged them to continue attending to their online classes since the end of this school year is near. They only need a little more patience to finish this and they will already be promoted to Grade 10 next year. Indeed, our cooperating teacher never fails to motivate her students. The class formally started at 9:20. The discussion started with a question regarding festivals. Our cooperating teacher asked the students as to how are they celebrating their festivals. Most of them answered “salo-salo” and some of them said “it’s just a normal day.” With this, she then narrated the celebration of the feist day of San Diego. On the other hand, she also discussed the goal of Crisostomo Ibarra to initiate a school. This will be the first formal school for the children in San Diego. After this, she asked the students as to how important education is. Gladly, almost everyone shared their thoughts. After the sharing, our cooperating teacher summarized everything that they have said. She mentioned that the grand celebration of festivals is but normal to every Filipino because it has been part of their rich culture and tradition. It is their way of paying tribute to their patron saints or to their bountiful harvests. On the other hand, she told them that education before was not as good as today. She told everyone that we are all lucky enough because even if we do not have a perfect educational system, we are trying our best to improve and develop as years passed by. In conclusion, today’s moral is paying respect to the rich culture and heritage of the people and that education is a must in order for an individual to succeed in life.

May 18, 2021 Today is May 18 and it is our second to the last meeting with Grade 8 – Pedro Bukaneg. I will probably miss the students and our cooperating teacher too. The google meeting started at 8:20 for the reason that we waited for the honor students to join. Our cooperating teacher told us that it will be their last online class since they will already be computing their grades for the final ranking of honors. Further, she gave the honor students their final requirements. They were asked to answer their last PLM for this school year. In addition, they have to pass a video of themselves wherein they are going to choose one of the best scenes in the “Florante at Laura” and narrate it on their own way. On the other hand, she made sure that the non-honors are not discriminated nor left behind. Rather, she told them to strive harder so that by next year, they will already be part of the honor roll – which put a smile on their faces and said their heartfelt gratitude to her. The meeting ended earlier today to give ample time for the honor students to finish their requirements. Before ending the meet, she told everyone to finish them on time so that they can already have their most awaited vacation. Indeed, our cooperating teacher makes sure that her students are being treated with equity and not equality. She knows when is the right time to give motivation and knows the exact words that will push them to their limits.

May 19, 2021 Today feels a little different since it is already the last day for the honor students. It is our sixth day with them, the Grade 9 – Gregorio del Pilar – soon to be Grade 10 students. The google meeting started at 9:20. Before starting the formal discussion, our cooperating teacher checked their attendance. This day was allotted for the announcement of our cooperating teacher to the honor students regarding their final requirements. For their last module, they need to answer the questions about “Noli Me Tangere”. Second, they need to take a video of themselves narrating the novel in their own way. Lastly, they need to make a solution plan on the societal issues that are present in the novel. The students were given the chance to ask for clarifications. Moreover, our cooperating teacher told them that they need to pass it until Sunday. However, some of them asked if they could pass it on Monday since they have other requirements in their other subjects too. With that concern of the students, she decided to just pass them until Monday. Truly, our cooperating teacher is very understanding. The google meeting ended earlier today to give ample time to the honor students to finish their requirements. Before leaving, she told them that they do not need to pressure themselves. They need to take it easy, and they just have to believe in themselves.

May 25, 2021 Today marks our last day of Experiential Learning in the Laboratory Schools with Grade 8 – Pedro Bukaneg. The class have not yet started but I can already feel a little bit of separation anxiety. How ironic it is to have almost all of the students in class in the last day of online class. There were more or less 30 students who attended the google meeting and it was my first time to witness a screen filled with students. Our cooperating teacher reminded the students to pass all of their backlogs and all other requirements. She also told us about the schedule for the Recognition Program, Commencement Exercises, Moving – up Ceremonies, and Graduation Rites. Thus, it made all the students excited knowing that the end is near and that they will already be promoted to Grade 9. Before ending the meeting, she told us that it is okay if the students will forget the topics that she have taught them as long as the values and the life lesson remains, she would be the happiest. Our educational system may be uncertain at this point in time given the global health crisis but I am lucky enough to have my Experiential Learning even if it is online. I have learned a lot from our cooperating teacher and most especially from the students of Grade 8 – Pedro Bukaneg. I will surely be missing them. I have seen them grow from innocent sophomore girls and boys to a more mature ones, ready to rock their junior life. I feel honored to be part of their journey and that I will forever remember them for it is through them that I have experience being called “Ma’am” for the first time.

May 26, 2021 Today marks our last day of Experiential Learning in the Laboratory Schools with Grade 9 – Gregorio del Pilar. The class have not yet started but I am already emotional since I have gotten this far. How funny it is to have all of the students in class today. Nevertheless, I felt happy because I was able to see them before bidding our goodbyes. Thankful for them for welcoming us to their growing family. Indeed, it has been a challenging school year for everyone. Moreover, our cooperating teacher reminded the students to pass all of their backlogs and all other requirements. She also told us about the schedule for the Recognition Program, Commencement Exercises, Moving – up Ceremonies, and Graduation Rites. Thus, it made all the students excited knowing that the end is near and that they will already be promoted to Grade 10. Before ending the meeting, she told us that it is okay if the students will be forgetting the topics that she has taught them as long as the values and the life lesson remains. She even added that she is very lucky that she has handled them for three years now and she is proud of them. No matter what happens, she will always be proud of them for they have come this far. The COVID-19 have been one of the most challenging part of our educational system. Nevertheless, I am thankful for the administrators and teachers for choosing to continue despite the sudden shift of our education. Things may be new to them, but I salute them, especially our cooperating teaching, for trying everything that they can to let the students meet the most essential learning competencies. I will surely be missing the Grade 9 – Gregorio del Pilar students. I am sure that they will all succeed in life because I have seen their perseverance since the day that I have started my Experiential Learning with them. I will forever treasure the memories that I had with them and that I also feel grateful for being part of their journey. With that, I will remember them for being serious on the outside yet sweet on the inside.
