Our first speaker was a lead inspector who has had experience inspecting schools both under the old inspection framework and the new inspection framework. The main aim of the networking group was to allow delegates the opportunity to speak to other Assessment Coordinators and share practices that work in their school as well as some activities designed to get the delegates thinking about how they can better use their data. This proved a massive hit and was reflected in the feedback forms with some fantastic responses.

Go green, raise standards, save money Jamie Charlton Sales Director Sharp Business Systems UK

Encourage healthy habits Start with the basics - they make a big difference. It could be as simple as encouraging children to switch off devices when they’re no longer in use, or switching off lights when they leave a room. This quick fix can help reduce your carbon footprint and running energy costs. A great first step. Recycling plastic – get them involved! By getting children excited about recycling, by, for example, creating a game out of separating waste into the appropriate bin, we can encourage responsible

behaviours early on. Furthermore, to improve health and concentration in lessons, as well as reduce single-use plastics, introducing an atmospheric water generator can be a sustainable school solution. An environmentally friendly alternative to bottle-fed dispensers or plastic bottles, Skywell from Sharp removes the need for water deliveries or single-use bottles. At a time when consumers, businesses, and schools are actively seeking ways to minimise their impact on the environment, technology like Skywell has the potential to help us all think differently about drinking water.

Utilise efficient IT equipment There are quick fixes for teachers too. Most classrooms have dated equipment, which often makes lessons less productive, and indeed keeps the costs high. By switching your classroom projector, for example, for a vastly more

efficient interactive touch screen, you can make an impact in lessons and help make a difference. Additionally, many projectors use expensive mercury-filled lamps which need extra care when being disposed of to ensure they are done so safely and responsibly. With a lower carbon footprint, Sharp’s 70” BIG PAD uses around 60% less electricity when benchmarked against some of the most common classroom projectors, and can reduce TCO by around £1,000 (over 5 years).

Other classroom technologies can also help reduce our impact on the environment. It may go without saying, but schools need printers and photocopiers. However, what they don’t all make use of is print management software. Software like PaperCut for Education is designed to reduce waste and save school money. By monitoring who is printing what, it empowers those in charge to make users accountable for their printing, even allowing them to restrict print

functions or access altogether! It’s also worth noting that not all printers and photocopiers perform in the same way. Are your devices efficient? Do they break down regularly? Do they have an energy saving mode when they aren’t being used? Consider these things when looking to get new print equipment.

Optimise building systems It’s important to also make sure we’re using our spaces in a responsible, low impact way. For example, using existing heating or lighting controls effectively can lower waste energy, save money and reduce emissions by up to 40%. Today’s technology can help. The Windows collaboration display from Sharp is a new breed of interactive display. The device combines award-winning touch technology with IoT sensors to monitor conditions like temperature and air quality. This enables you to optimise room conditions to increase productivity, save energy and have a more positive impact on the environment. In all, by making use of the above simple steps, schools can encourage responsible behaviours in both staff and students to help protect our planet for the generations of the future. discussion on current policies and approaches.

Intended outcomes: • Teachers will develop a greater awareness of how pupils learn and how teaching should best align. • Teachers will gain a deeper understanding of the principles underpinning teaching for mastery. • Teachers will demonstrate elements of changed classroom practice and be able to design lessons that include better questioning and more opportunities for mathematical talk. As a result, school lesson planning formats and calculation policies are more likely to align coherently with teaching for mastery. • Pupils will benefit from increased opportunities to explore concepts in more depth, and develop a greater understanding of the connections in mathematics. They will be more confident in their mathematics and be able to explain their reasoning using appropriate language. Enjoyment and motivation to succeed will be seen in the classroom.

The wider context: Most teachers in primary schools do not have qualifications above GCSE Mathematics and when asked, do not consider themselves “maths specialists”. Several Maths Hubs have been supporting Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Maths Work Groups for teachers who want to improve their knowledge and understanding of mathematics and how to teach in an effective way. Evaluations from 2018- 19 provide qualitative evidence that the SKTM programmes run by hubs are having an impact in the classroom and on pupil achievement. It is important that all primary school teachers have a deep subject knowledge and are familiar with appropriate pedagogy. Significant national funding has been committed to resourcing this development with textbooks and the NCETM Professional Development Materials. This Work Group will help support effective uses of these emergent teaching for mastery resources in lesson planning. It builds upon the work of the 2017/18 and 2018/19 projects using planning guidance developed by those projects.

Trainer: Kerry Blacklock is Phase Leader of KS1 & Maths Subject Lead at Kensington Primary School, Newham. She is an experienced work group lead who has led professional development for a range of London schools.

Soofia Amin has been an ESOL lecturer since 2000 and has worked in Adult education for the past 13 years in Newham. She has been teaching a variety of levels in ESOL and has been involved in developing assessments. Currently Soofia is working at Kensington Primary. She joined the school in 2014 and leads on EAL, Mid-phase Admission and Community Engagement. Her role includes managing the mid-phase process, ensuring provision for EAL pupils is effective and that all EAL pupils are making good to outstanding progress. She also ensures parents have the support needed at school to help their children with their education. This is provided through maths, literacy and parenting courses. Kensington Primary has a high mobility rate and over 90% of mid-phase admissions are from abroad. Their Ofsted report in 2016 cited: “The large numbers of pupils, who join the school at different times of year, often with very little English, make rapid progress. This is because the support for pupils who speak English as an additional language is superb. These pupils become fluent readers and writers and are able to tackle the same work as their peers within 11 months of starting school. For example, the winner and runner-up in a debating competition with local schools were both non-English speakers when they started at Kensington Primary.” Inspection report: Kensington Primary School, 12th—13th July 2016 To find out more or book on to the specific course please contact: noori.khanom@ttlt.academy Access to the network group, plus two training sessions is £249.
