The New Education Landscape
Sarah Beaumont, Head of Governance
The Education Space
Governors and Trustees came out in force to attend The Education Space Annual Governors’ and Trustees’ Conference held at Little Ilford School on Saturday 23 November.
“When you come to East London, you fall in love with it and its
people”
Shazia Hussain opened the conference, telling her own inspiring story that has led to her recent appointment as CEO of the London Legacy Development Corporation. She spoke of the phases of the project, which included the planning, construction and subsequent completion of the magnificent Olympic Park, and its current phase which is to develop and deliver its legacy.
aspirational and practical. She spoke of how diversity affects various aspects of the school environment and provided governors and trustees with the tools to effectively question school leaders on matters related to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Sharon addressed themes that challenged delegates to think of their own Board reality in terms of race, gender, disability and to consider more creative ways to recruit future Governors.
Delegates enjoyed the opportunity to attend all three conference workshops, each delivered by subject experts at The Education Space.
Shazia spoke of the vision to turn East London into a place of destination through innovative and inclusive growth, creating communities and opportunities for East Londoners.
“It’s not just the message but the messenger that makes an impact”
Sharon Warmington told her own inspirational story in her keynote speech on building an inclusive and equitable school culture. Founder of the National Black Governors Network, Sharon presented ideas that were both
Sarah Beaumont, Head of Governance, carried forward themes already highlighted by Sharon Warmington in her workshop Does your Board reflect your school’s diverse community? Sarah spoke of positive role models, echoing the point made by Sharon that to positively make a difference to a child’s life it is not only the message that is important but who delivers it. In terms of aspirations into adulthood, the point was made that “students cannot be what they cannot see”. Delegates worked together to discuss the barriers in achieving a diverse board, and how these barriers could be overcome.
“Governors must lead by example, setting the standard for inclusivity and equity”
Tom Alexander, Head of Human Resources, led a workshop, posing the question Does your Board understand its statutory role in managing staff performance?
Tom reported: “Apart from the governors’ role in staff performance, the workshop also looked at their role in managing staff appraisals as well as that of school leaders and the wider staff community. The workshop was well attended and the governors all participated with enthusiasm in the group tasks. The feedback I received was very positive.”
Zuber Ahmed, Head of Finance, led his workshop to challenge delegates to consider Is your Board equipped to face the current financial challenges?
Zuber reported: “It was a privilege to conduct a workshop for our esteemed Governors, focusing on the financial difficulties schools are currently facing and exploring how Governors can be empowered to offer both strategic support and effective challenge. The session focused on key areas such as the budget cycle, financial planning,
budget monitoring reports, and the procurement process. It is crucial for Governors to receive relevant and concise information regularly to ensure they can make informed decisions in a timely manner. The workshop prompted thoughtful discussions and encouraged strong engagement, equipping our Governors with valuable insights to guide their future decisions.”
Governors were encouraged to draft their own action plans naming one ‘must do’, one ‘should do’ and one ‘could do’ to take back to their Boards.
“Be the change you want to see”
The closing facilitated discussion gave opportunity for delegates to share their thoughts on funding, staffing and diversity.
Thank you to the staff of Little Ilford School for providing the facilities, to Shazia Hussain and Sharon Warmington for delivering such inspirational keynote speeches, and to all delegates for generously giving their time to invest in their own professional development and support the event.

Lorna Jackson: My Life Journey
Lorna Jackson
Headteacher at Maryland Primary School
At our recent AGM, The Education Space proudly presented Lorna Jackson MBE FoB with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Lorna has been a guiding light and an inspiration to countless colleagues in Newham and beyond, a sentiment beautifully echoed in the heartfelt words shared by those who supported her nomination.
In her acceptance speech, Lorna captivated everyone with her eloquence, reflecting on her remarkable journey and the dedication that has defined her career. Her story serves as a testament to the profound impact of passion and perseverance in shaping the future of education.
We extend our deepest congratulations to Lorna for this well-deserved honour!
I think it is appropriate to share some of my life journey through the decades with you. There have been 3 recurrent themes in my life which are uniqueness, resilience and courage.
I’m going to start my journey in 1850s Jamaica where my forefathers farmed seven acres of land with a house given to them when they were freed from enslavement.
100 years later, in the 1950s, I was born in that same house on that same land, the start of my very unique journey. My family name is Buchanan, demonstrating my Scottish heritage and my link to enslavement.
In the 1960s, a decade later, as a 5 year old Windrush child, I sailed from Jamaica clutching my one beloved dolly, strangely named Princess Margaret. I arrived in the UK during a heavy February snowfall. Coming from a tropical climate resilience set in fast. Primary school for me was a whirr of unpleasant memories.
time), due to proudly representing equality and change with my huge afro hairstyle.
In the 1980s, I tried to calm down a bit after starting my teaching career in East Ham. At the time, there were very few teachers of colour in Newham, and after listening to their stories of how they were treated due to their own uniqueness, I pioneered a support group called Newham African-Caribbean Teachers’ Association, sponsored by the Newham Education Department. 1981 was designated the national year of Anti-Racism and that was the year I appeared in the papers speaking out about how the farright National Front was allowed to hire Newham schools. My militancy surged again when I found that they had destroyed the children’s work on their Diwali display. With my class of courageous 7 year olds, we led the campaign against two national companies to get rid of their racist and stereotypical imagery on their products.
In the 1970s, as the only child of colour out of 623 pupils at my Grammar school in North London, the unpleasant experiences persisted. I earned the nickname ‘Cassius Clay’ (Mohammad Ali) , having to frequently fight my way out of the school gates. Resilience came to my rescue again as I metaphorically fought back the bullies by being top of the class in 9 out of the 11 subjects studied, to the envy of my peers. I was the fastest sprinter in the school where no girl could beat me, so, I was put into the boys’ races, where they could not catch me either. I wonder how that would go down in schools today. Plus I ran barefoot which added to being different. This difference has given me the resilience and courage that I needed which has driven me to embrace challenges throughout my life.
Still in the 1970s, as a student teacher at Goldsmiths College, I developed a taste for militancy and being active in the student union earned me another nick-name Angela Davis (who was an activist at the
In the 1990s I calmed down and behaved myself as a Deputy at Maryland. In 2001, I became Headteacher of Maryland School. Uniqueness, resilience and courage has led me to my vision where I ensure we provide children with memorable school experiences. Some children had never been to the seaside, so I built a beach on site for them to experience sand between their toes. They needed to see real animals so we built Cluckingham Palace, our 5 star chicken coop. Who would have known that the little girl who travelled from a farm in Jamaica, clinging on to beloved dolly Princess Margaret, had any idea that one day she would have 22 letters after her name, be the founder of Newham Learning and Education for Change, be invited to the Queen’s state funeral, chat to Prince William about Aston Villa and Arsenal during my MBE investiture, awarded Freedom of the Borough in 2022. I am honoured that I have been recognised as a shining torch for this borough for nearly 50 years’ service.
With that, I thank you.
