SENCO and SEN Teachers- Spotlight Series Principles of teaching for mastery
Join Maths Hub Lead, Samira Islam, for our Spotlight Series to explore the foundations of teaching for mastery. This FREE series is suited for both Primary and Secondary schools.
What is teaching for mastery?
The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths
Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material.
The Five Big Ideas underpin teaching for mastery in both primary and secondary schools: Coherence
Representation and Structure
Mathematical Thinking Fluency
Variation
We believe the principles of teaching for mastery work really well for all pupils to access maths, including pupils with additional needs. This special spotlight is for SENCOs, SEN Teachers and practitioners to come and learn about the teaching for mastery pedagogy and understand how this can enhance teaching and learning in your setting.
