Mandatory Headteacher Training for Managing Safely The Education Space

Are you aware of the new mandatory training requirement for all Head Teachers in Newham Community and Voluntary Controlled Schools? The LBN CYPS Health & Safety Organisation & Arrangements document for Community and Voluntary Schools (October 2019) now includes a requirement that Head Teachers must ensure they have suitable health and safety training. The document states:

“The Council sets a standard of the IOSH Managing Safely course for the medium to high risk service managers to complete. Headteachers of Community and Voluntary Controlled schools are required to ensure they recognise the risks in their activities and can apply the right measures to control and manage those risks. Headteachers can either complete the IOSH Managing Safely course or a course that will demonstrate the required standard of competence. If suitable training has not already been undertaken, then training must take place within 12 months of taking up the post (or within 12 months of the issue date of this document for existing headteachers).

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - INSIGHTS

FIRST LEGO League is a global science and technology challenge for 9 to 16-year-olds which sees more than 310,000 young people in 38,800 teams, from across 100 countries, come together to develop their STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills. Sponsorship from David Family Foundation for the event at Academy Achievers includes all entry fees and a LEGO Mindstorms robot provided to the schools. Registered teams so far include Maryland Primary, Godwin Primary, Dersingham Primary, Manor Primary, George Mitchell Academy, and Prendergast Ladywell. The aim is to encourage children and young people to develop computational thinking skills that will enable them to solve technological problems. FIRST LEGO League helps pupils to engage in their education and also nurtures important

teamwork, problemsolving and life skills. The challenge is split into three key parts: The Robot Game, Core Values and the Innovation Project. In preparation for the Robot Game, teams of children and young people will build and programme a LEGO Mindstorms robot to autonomously complete

a series of challenges and score points on a themed playing field. This year’s theme, CITY SHAPER, is based around architecture and the spaces that we live in, and for the Innovation Project, teams are invited to explore issues such as transportation, accessibility and natural disasters, questioning ‘how can we shape a better future for everyone?’ and presenting a solution to the problem.

Throughout the entire programme, teams will operate under, and be asked to demonstrate, the FIRST Core Values, celebrating discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork and fun. Paulette Watson, Founder and director for Academy Achievers, said: “FIRST LEGO League enables children and young people to appreciate the opportunities that STEM has to offer. They are able to acquire these basic concepts at the same time making discoveries, using computational thinking and be able to be creative all at the same time. We are definitely equipping them with the necessary skills to be ready for a technological world”. “Last year we took part in the Into Orbit Challenge, and this year we are hosting

this event (City Shaper) because we want to include every young person in a fun and engaging way. Thanks to Dave Family Foundation, we are able to work with schools to get FIRST LEGO League (FFL) reaching those children who normally are excluded from these projects. I am very excited to be hosting the FFL 2020 and I am looking forward to meeting the budding engineers to take the stage to win this FFL competition this Saturday 25th January 2020.”

Soofia Amin has been an ESOL lecturer since 2000 and has worked in Adult education for the past 13 years in Newham. She has been teaching a variety of levels in ESOL and has been involved in developing assessments. Currently Soofia is working at Kensington Primary. She joined the school in 2014 and leads on EAL, Mid-phase Admission and Community Engagement. Her role includes managing the mid-phase process, ensuring provision for EAL pupils is effective and that all EAL pupils are making good to outstanding progress. She also ensures parents have the support needed at school to help their children with their education. This is provided through maths, literacy and parenting courses. Kensington Primary has a high mobility rate and over 90% of mid-phase admissions are from abroad. Their Ofsted report in 2016 cited: “The large numbers of pupils, who join the school at different times of year, often with very little English, make rapid progress. This is because the support for pupils who speak English as an additional language is superb. These pupils become fluent readers and writers and are able to tackle the same work as their peers within 11 months of starting school. For example, the winner and runner-up in a debating competition with local schools were both non-English speakers when they started at Kensington Primary.” Inspection report: Kensington Primary School, 12th—13th July 2016 To find out more or book on to the specific course please contact: noori.khanom@ttlt.academy Access to the network group, plus two training sessions is £249.
