Exceptional Work in Exceptional Circumstances The Education Space
The past 10 weeks have shown just how resilient our schools and students are. With unprecedented levels of change and uncertainty, school leaders, teachers and support staff could be forgiven for struggling to rise to the monumental challenges faced with very little (if any) advanced notice. Moving from the traditional classroom environment to online/home schooling in literally one weekend, with no training for staff, pupils or parents, would never even be considered in any normal circumstances. All school staff members deserve massive praise and respect for the amazing work that has been done to support students and families in these times. Along with the hard work that schools are doing to provide for the students, we should also be very proud of the way in which our students (and parents) have taken it in their stride and continue to produce high quality work. We have therefore decided to use our newsletter to showcase some of the fantastic work that students have been creating over the past 10 weeks.

EQUALITY Equality, what does it mean to me? It means we’re all the same. No matter what your name. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white. So, if you see something that isn’t right, Then you must express your feelings with all of your might. Equality means to have a sense of unity. This then creates a good community. Quick, don’t lose this amazing opportunity. Unfurl your wings and take flight. Help us win this devastating fight! Spread the message and remember, To make sure that our community doesn’t shatter as: ALL LIVES MATTER!

In year 6 we have been looking at the Just Imagine book for Beowulf. The children have used charcoal to sketch the images from the book and also have written narrative poems about Grendel the monster. They are really enjoying the book as it is set during the Anglo-Saxon era and they have been using the long term memory from the year to recall facts.

GRENDEL POEM On a dangerous, dark, astonishing night, While the Great warriors were abed, The ghastly figure slid and shrithed, “I will eat you,” he had said. His stooped arms swung towards the unarmed soldiers, Just like a sweeping ball, Grendel was more powerful, And five times taller. He ripped, grabbed and swallowed, The soldiers were all in fear, Then one man, Beowulf stepped up, And Grendel was in tears. To and f ro in their deathly tug of war, Beowulf wanted to cause it harm, With Superhuman strength, He ripped off its arm! By Alex, Hallsville Primary School

GRENDEL POEM Through the darkest of nights, a darker figure strode While the defenders of Denmark dreamt, A ghastly shadow staggered over the moors And jerked its revolting head! While the silhouette shuddered Through heavy eyes Beowulf kept watch, A single word escaped through his gritted teeth ‘Grendel!’ Grendel slid towards the sleeping Leofric With a slash and a stab, Leofric tried to let out a scream but it was choked in his throat He had been swallowed in one gulp! Beowulf latched onto Grendel’s arm The beast tried to jerk free, But even with his superhuman strength The creature’s arm was ripped from its socket, instantly!

My Journey to Antarctica.
My first week for home learning...
As I set out on my journey, I travelled by boat. I tried my best to feel brave because I was surrounded with lots of cold water around me.
Home learning was so good but sometimes I don't like it when I upload a picture or file. It’s a little annoying for me.
The minutes dragged on, and it took a couple of hours to get there. Another issue that I had was when the Emperor Penguins were following me all the way through. For a moment, I found it funny but it was obvious that they were not dangerous. When I arrived in Antarctica, I felt delighted and blissful because the ocean was beautiful. As quick as a flash, an Orca jumped out of the extremely cold water and it got me all wet. At that instant I found it entertaining because there were so many animals to see. Time wore on, I managed to do lots of exciting activities like camping, bird and wildlife watching and staying on a ship and sightseeing. I enjoyed seeing this marvellous place and in the future I would want to visit the south pole.

I am very sad because I miss my school and especially Miss Anjum and also my friends. In school it's very easy to do Maths, Literacy, Science and all my other subject. I miss Mr. Ben for my P.E and Football class. I played football in my house garden. I don't like to play alone. I'm the only player to play football. My mum gives me different food. She makes my favourite dishes everyday. But I miss my school dinner with my friends. I’m reading an online book everyday. I called my grandparent on WhatsApp. They are in India. My parents and I are also scared of the Corona virus. I stay in my room more now. I pray to God to kill all viruses from my country, so I can go to school and enjoy the routine of my activities.

As part of their art learning, the children had to create a happy and hopeful poster for the new NHS hospital at the Excel Centre. The best entries were from: Ammar (it included an acrostic poem!), Janvi, Mahdi, Vidisha and Mishael.
These posters were colourful, creative and had lovely words on them to give the patients and doctors hope. We will be emailing them over to the hospital to be put up in the new wards.

Two Elmhurst pupils were broadcast nationwide, as they debated against a leading scientist and a former government minister. Nazeef and Samiha, both in year six, were invited to take part in the war of words by the charity Debate Mate, and it saw them compete against Lord Adonis, who was a minister in both Tony Blair's and Gordon Brown's governments, and Dr Rose Luckin, an expert in Artificial Intelligence from University College London. Despite being up against such fearsome opposition, both children spoke with poise, confidence and authority and were lavished with praise both by their fellow panelists and the audience of several hundred, which was following the proceedings through YouTube and the video app Zoom. The very topical motion was 'This House Believe That time is up for the traditional classroom', with Nazeef and Dr Luckin arguing for the motion and Samiha and Lord Adonis arguing in opposition. Two professional debaters rounded off the teams of three. It was very closely fought but the opposition team emerged victorious, showing there is still room for traditional teaching in the modern, digital world.
You can watch the debate back at Debate Mate’s YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/debatemateUK
Nazeef and Samiha have both been involved with debating at Elmhurst for two years

Randstad Supply Bundles As we have entered what must be the most challenging and demanding scenario schools have faced in many years. Randstad, are doing everything to hopefully make the transition to the ‘new normal’ as seamless as possible. Randstad understand the most significant concern of all schools is the safety and wellbeing of all staff and children, therefore recruitment of staff for September may not be at the top of your list. However, September will be here, with all the uncertainty regarding who can and will be able to work, Randstad want to give schools a gentle reminder of all the services and help they can offer. The video below shows the services Randstad provides to many schools across the country. Please click the image to view the video online.
One possible solution Randstad would like to offer is ‘Supply Bundles’, where all teachers have passed an accredited Covid-19 Awareness course and have undergone both Covid and antibody testing to provide peace of mind for your school, parents and carers. All of the teachers will live within 30 minutes travelling distance of your school to help provide continuity of teaching for the children. ‘Supply Bundles’ will be charged at only £155 per day on a day-to-day supply basis.

Kensington Primary School Shortlisted for Education’s Oscars Kensington Primary School
At a time when schools are doing more than ever to support their communities, teachers across the country have discovered they have been shortlisted for Education’s Oscars. Selected from thousands of nominations, Helen Harris, the SENDCO at Kensington Primary School in Newham, is one of 84 extraordinary shortlisted nominees from lecturers, school staff and schools who have been entered for the prestigious Pearson National Teaching Awards. What’s more, Kensington Primary School was shortlisted from thousands to the final six candidates for Primary School of the Year. Helen Harris, one of the shortlisted four SENDCOs, was nominated for truly embedding the phrase
‘people before paper’ and initiating a range of systems and practices that share the inclusion and development of SEND pupils and the staff that work with them. Kensington Primary School has gone from being judged as Requires Improvement by Ofsted in 2014 to being Outstanding in 2016. This was only the start of the journey, as the school has gone from strength to strength, developing a curriculum that encompasses academic success, pastoral care and healthy living for all its pupils. The two entries are in the running to be Silver Award winners. These will then compete to win one of just 14 Gold Awards which will be announced at the televised UK ceremony later in the year, broadcast on the BBC as ‘Britain’s Classroom Heroes’.

The idea to start her own NHS project came after being approached by her cousin who was seeking elastic sources to produce NHS face masks. Joanne then began an extensive search online for ways to support the NHS, where she signed up for support groups on Facebook – ‘For The Love of Scrubs’, ‘Queens Hospital, Romford’ and ‘Sewing 4 the NHS’. Joanne extended her efforts by teaming up with a former colleague and fashion lecturer, Alison Donahue, forming the Facebook group “NHS Production” and transforming her home into an NHS production suite during
the lockdown period. Over the past weeks, they have used their joint resources to make scrubs and facemasks for Homerton University Hospital, a local care home and a local G.P. Surgery. Joanne has also connected some of Waltham Forest College’s
suppliers to voluntary organisations and individuals. As a result of her efforts, organisations such as The Children’s Scrap Project in Homerton donated hundreds of metres of fabric, which has been used by ‘Sewing 4 The NHS’. Joanne, who has been working for the college for 20 years, said: “I feel immensely proud that I have been able to play my part and have used my skills to help support our NHS. Many thanks to the College for supporting me and allowing me to access and use available resources.”
