T

he Education Space kicked off it’s brand launch in style - as exhibitors at this years Academies Show.

The two day show also gave plenty of opportunity to meet with familiar faces, as well as create new relationships with our brand.

Staff Updates

Hosted at The Excel, the event provided a perfect platform to showcase the range of new and existing services offered by The Education Space.

At the core of our brand is our vision: To prepare children for a world that doesn’t yet exist. We do this by offering services our schools need to start looking to the future, such as giving our education system access to innovative ideas and up-to-date thinking.

Niyi Akinmutande (Head of HR Shared Services). Niyi will be responsible for the HR Shared Services (i.e. payroll and recruitment).

We’re also creating conversations about what a modern classroom should look like, and taking a fresh look at the skills our students are going to need when they leave school. We believe It’s time to make education relevant, inspiring, and imaginative – so we can prepare children for a world that doesn’t yet exist. New Brand Launch Event

The future is creativity The Education Space

T

he technological revolution is changing our world faster than anyone in our society can really understand, and within this mass shift there are a few statistics that really should be getting more attention in our education system. 20% of the jobs that exist now will not be available to children in reception when they leave school. Likewise in 2015 the Bank of England found that up to 15 million jobs in the UK economy were at risk of getting phased out and replaced by automation, and in 2017 the McKinsey Global Institute reported that 800 million low-skilled jobs worldwide will go by 2030.

vulnerable to automation, and something is going to have to plug that gap in the jobs market for our school leavers. Our education system is going to have to step up and up-skill those individuals who otherwise might have ended up behind a till or on a factory line.

better, and offer more of our students brighter, stimulating futures. Surely if education was as effective as it could be and more inspiring, less of the population would end up sliding into jobs that can be replaced by a robot, a bit of code or an automated check-out.

At The Education Space, we like to see this massive jobs market change as a opportunity to do

Over human history, technology has created more jobs than it

We can already see it happen in our factories, in our manufacturing industries, and in our supermarkets. Lowskilled jobs are extremely

has replaced – and the information economy boom over the last few years has created whole new ways of making money and thriving in a technological age. In 2019 anyone with a smartphone and a passion can create a content creation business, they can access online university courses or they can learn a new trade on YouTube. All the exciting new digital age jobs and opportunities have one thing at their core – creativity, and the ability to think creatively. Sometimes the word ‘creativity’ brings to mind art classes, penniless writers and artistic indulgence. Or creativity might feel like a luxury or something just for the few, rather than a core aspect of human potential. This odd stereotype massively undermines the value that creativity and creative thinking

have for a wide range of skills. Engineering requires creative thinking. Groundbreaking scientific research involves creative thinking. Also, a large number of the most exciting job opportunities on offer for youth generations today come from innovators who

‘All the exciting new digital age jobs and opportunities have one thing at their core – creativity’ are creating their own niche by looking creatively at established systems and coming up with disruptive business plans. Children who are in school right now are already having to complete their education fully in the knowledge that no one can tell them what

kind of world they will be met with once it’s done. In an unpredictable, rapidly changing world students have to be ready to identify and go after their own opportunities. Students are going to need resilience, independent thinking, and dynamic action to respond to what they find when they enter the workforce. This is exactly what we should be nurturing at school. Creative jobs are going to be around for a long time – and we are missing our chance to help kids access creative thinking, and the resilience that comes with it. Our notoriously examsfocused education system is a big part of the problem. In primary school, accessing your creativity is not a problem. A 5-year-old has no issues drawing for the sake of drawing, or shaping some clay

to see what comes out. As our students progress to secondary and sixth form, the relentless pressure of being taught to exams drains this creative joy and confidence away. Our obsession with results tells our students that they’re only as good as exams say they are, and that their futures are decided the age of 18 by a bunch of certificates future employers will rarely ask to see. We think this is a huge shame, and a missed opportunity. Education could be a time in your life where instead of being pigeon-holed and relentlessly examined, you’re gaining a better understanding of who you are, and what you could be good at. Schools could be

a fantastic environment for real self-development, and developing the resilience that you really need to thrive in an uncertain future. The Education Space works with schools who are leading the way on creativity in the classroom. Sandringham and Scott Wilkie are two primary examples of schools we regularly work with who have made inspiring efforts to bring creativity into the look and feel of their classrooms and their lesson content. We’re seeing massive signs of encouragement in schools that are embracing future technologies, and giving their students access to tech and inspiration. Watch a room full of

students learning to make stop motion animation, or how to use music production software, or engaging with VR headsets – and you will feel that buzzing energy of a room full of inspired students having their minds stimulated and becoming familiar with the tech of the future. So when we lose those 6 million low skilled jobs over the next decade – let’s prepare our pupils to create their own opportunities. People understand from a much younger age now about the effect they’re going to have on the world – we should be supporting them to really think about the kind of impact they want to achieve when they leave school.

We believe that as educators we can deliver something that students will really want to be a part of. We need children to know their worth is not defined by exams. We need to open doors to let them feel like they can make a success out of their lives through following their passions and training their minds, and give them access to the dynamic, resilient thinking that comes with creativity.

It’s time to start reverse engineering what we as adults know gets you ahead in the real world, back into our schools. Concepts like self-development, personal confidence, innovative thinking, transferable skills, creative expression, conviction in your ideas and determination to follow them through. If the future is creativity - our students need this side of themselves to be nurtured at school right now.

Giving young people a voice in the conversation about knife crime In this three page special guest editorial, Matthew Beer, CEO of VotesforSchools, provides insight into how his innovative company is helping pupils feel safe and empowered to speak out and share their ideas on how they think society can tackle the current knife crime problem.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - GUEST EDITORIAL

A national emergency This month, the chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, Sara Thornton, declared that the prevalence of knife crime has become a national emergency1. This is nothing new to the young people of Newham, many of whom have been affected by gang violence throughout their youth, and who continue to worry for their own safety. At a Knife Crime Awareness event this month at Newham Sixth Form College, one student summed up the general

sentiment of his peers, claiming he feels he is ‘living on the edge’2. I came out of teaching and built VotesforSchools to help students feel able to discuss and interrogate critical issues such as the current knife crime epidemic. And now as I work with schools, I have found that the most crucial step when it comes to making progress on topics like knife crime is finding out what students really think about the problem and getting them to open up.

Listening and learning from young people VotesforSchools exists to get students voting and expressing opinions on issues that matter to the community. For instance, do you think your students would want police to spend more time in your school? 65% of the Primary pupils we asked thought so3. Some Secondary students also told us that they felt too scared to tell the police anything. Now we know that, we can encourage those schools to build closer relationships with the local authorities.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - GUEST EDITORIAL

“The most crucial step is...finding out what students really think about the problem and getting them to open up” When we first looked at violent crime, we asked young people whether they were concerned about the number of police on the streets and we received a startling response: 74% of Secondary students and 73% of Key Stage 2 pupils felt that there were fewer police officers on the streets and this was causing an increase in violent crime. Many then wrote to us saying that they were worried about this issue. We have given these responses to the MET police force so that they can respond accordingly.

students about the facts and to allow teachers to feel confident having these discussions with their classes. We are also going to hold an area-wide vote for a week after the Easter holidays where students can go online to express their opinions on this debate. The results will then be shared with the schools in the area. Not only will this provide an opportunity for students to learn more about the

dangers of gang affiliation and knife crime, but it will also allow the education community to have a joint discussion. In April, we will provide these lessons to all schools and encourage students to debate them in the same week. As a result, you will be able to talk to feeder or neighbouring schools about the exact same issue and what their students have told them compared to yours. Get in touch In order to do this topic justice, we need to hear from teachers in Newham. Over the next couple of weeks, we are going to start making the lessons on knife crime for schools but in order to do so, we need to hear your thoughts: what do you believe is the most vital aspect of knife crime

Resources to help your students With knife crime such a pertinent and devastating issue in the Newham community, the VotesforSchools team have decided to produce a set of resources for all schools in the area to educate

or gang violence to cover with students? Do they need to talk about what leads people to join gangs? Do they need to talk about protecting themselves? Is it most important to look at where they can go for help? You now have the opportunity to help us shape these lessons for your students, so please email us or ring the team to tell us what you think we can do in order to make the greatest impact. See below for contact details. The VotesforSchools programme itself runs throughout the school year and covers topics ranging from homophobia to how social media might affect a young person’s mental health. When you sign up, you will receive weekly lessons on issues in the news which your students can vote on and you will receive evidence and support in covering the new Ofsted Inspection Framework.

Each event was ‘unlocked’ by reaching fundraising goals through class fundraising, purchasing red noses and selling tickets for the annual Music Concert. The challenges ranged from eating baby food blindfolded to teachers endured five minutes of soaking wet sponges

One of the highlights of the day was a challenge between Mr Haleem (Year 4 teacher) and Ms Van Der Westhuizen (Year 6 teacher) who competed in a push-up challenge. Both teachers were well supported by their respective year groups, however, the ultimate champion was Ms Van Der Westhuizen! The staff challenges concluded with another Year 4 teacher
