WHAT’S HOT FOR

A LOOK AT THE TRENDS SHAPING THE CAR INDUSTRY

T

he 2014 model year is shaping up to be a great time for new-car shoppers.

As the economy improves, buyers are starting to pour into showrooms again after delaying the purchase of a new vehicle for too long. Today’s vehicles have gotten better, safer and more refined. And financing terms remain favorable, with a combination of low interest rates, longer loan lengths and easier lending standards. If you’re in the market for a new car, here are some trends to know about this year.

TECHNOLOGY

New cars are becoming more like consumer electronics with each passing year.

Not only are they available with more luxury add-ons — things like adaptive cruise control, ventilated seats, video cameras and blind-spot sensors — but they’re also more customizable than ever before. In a lot of new models, for example, a digital display behind the steering wheel can show different information based on what the driver prefers to see there. It’s a fancier, more powerful version of the old-fashioned trip computer. Perhaps the biggest trend for 2014 is the ability for cars and smartphones to work together. Most new cars today offer some kind of system for playing music, accessing apps and making

phone calls through your cell phone, and the differences between them can help push careful shoppers from one car to another. If you want to be blown away, make a visit to your local car dealer and ask them to demonstrate some of the infotainment features on their new cars. Even the most affordable, entry-level economy cars are typically available with the kinds of electronics that would have been considered extravagant luxuries just a few years ago.

GAS MILEAGE

Another big trend involves technology under the hood: getting the most mileage from every drop of gasoline. As federal gas mileage standards tighten and consumers look more closely at the fuel economy figures that can help lower their gas budget,

car makers are responding by making impressive mileage a key feature on their 2014 cars. Turbochargers, quiet diesel engines and direct fuel injection are just a few of the technologies that are becoming more common this year.

PREMIUM COMPACTS

Closely related to the fuel-saving trend is the popularity of today’s “premium compact” cars. Small, efficient commuter cars are available with more high-end options this year, letting buyers outfit them like luxury cars while still benefiting from their lower fuel consumption. Luxury brands are rolling out smaller, more efficient models, too, for people who want the status and comfort of driving a high-end vehicle without the pain at the fuel pump.

Truck is Stronger, Smarter www.cargazing.com

N

ew from hood to hitch, the 2014 Silverado 1500 is engineered to be stronger, smarter and more capable than ever before. Among the hundreds of improvements, large and small, are: • A trio of all-new EcoTec3 engines, a V-6 and two V-8s • A stronger, quieter and more comfortable cab • A refined new interior with features and connectivity tailored to the needs of truck customers • Revised steering, suspension and brakes for improved ride and handling • Ingenious solutions for managing cargo in the bed. Even with all of the improvements, the base prices for all three configurations of the 2014 Silverado 1500 – regular cab, double cab, and crew cab – carry over from 2013. Buyers of all 2014 Silverado 1500s also will receive a standard scheduled maintenance program for two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. Silverado crew cabs with the available 5.3L EcoTec3 V-8 will begin reaching Chevrolet dealers in May. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices for crew cabs start at $32,710, including a $995 destination freight charge – the same as the 2013 model. “When you combine the innovative features

The popular Chevy Silverado pickup has been completely redesigned for 2014 to be better than ever. of the new Silverado with base pricing equivalent to 2013 models and standard scheduled maintenance, Silverado becomes a great choice for pickup customers, helping them save money when they buy – and when they drive,” said Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer for Silverado.

EXTERIOR

Silverado’s exterior design blends strong Chevy truck heritage with a refined, modern aesthetic. The new design is more muscular, more functional and more aerodynamic. A twin-port grille, fullwidth bumper and dual power dome hood

create a strong presence, which is carried through in sculpted body sides and fender flares. The new Silverado design is about much more than just looks, however. The new front end is engineered to improve sealing for more efficient cooling, while the roof and tailgate spoiler were shaped in the wind tunnel to smooth airflow over the truck for reduced drag. New inlaid doors, which fit into recesses in the bodyside, reduce wind noise for a quieter cab.

INTERIOR

The all-new interiors of the 2014 Silverado 1500 reflect the same focus on form and

function. The upright instrument panel, sixgauge instrument cluster and multiple storage options are tailored specifically to the needs of truck customers. Controls are functional, logically placed and easy to operate with work gloves on. Rear doors on crew cabs are larger, for easier entry and exit, and rear doors on double cab models are now hinged at the front for easier access, especially in tight spots. The new Chevrolet MyLink provides easyto-use connectivity for the job site or the family vacation, with natural voice recognition and enough ports and power outlets to support multiple devices.

RIDE

The chassis of the 2014 Silverado includes a number of customerfocused updates. A revised front and rear suspension and wider wheels provide a more comfortable ride and more confident handling. Electric power steering improves steering feel and reduces fuel consumption. New four-wheel-disc brakes with Duralife rotors improve brake feel and potentially double rotor life. Silverado will be available with segmentexclusive safety features such as Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning with an Active Safety Seat, and Front and Rear Park

Assist. StabiliTrak with Trailer Sway Control and Hill Start Assist are standard on all Silverados.

CARGO

The pickup box also benefits from this focus on providing Silverado customers with the right tools for the job. Silverado’s CornerStep bumper, combined with handholds built into the new box rail protectors, makes it easier to access the box. The bed is also available with new upper tie-down hooks, under-rail light-emitting diode lighting, and an EZ Lift and Lower tailgate.

2014 TOYOTA COROLLA

Corolla is all-new for 2014 www.cargazing.com

B

uilding on 47 years of success and close to 40 million sales in the world, the 11th generation Corolla is a dramatically styled, sleeker, more dynamic Corolla that will change consumer perceptions of this iconic compact. The new Corolla’s exterior design builds on the “Iconic Dynamism” theme seen on the athletic Corolla Furia Concept at the 2013 North American International Auto Show. The new Corolla builds on the styling momentum seen in Toyota vehicles launched in the past year, which has produced more expressive vehicle designs. With the new Corolla’s stronger exterior styling, it is clear that Toyota’s brand and product direction will emphasize more compelling styling executions that will appeal to current Toyota customers while also attracting more youthful buyers. The Corolla’s design theme dictates a more advanced, modernlooking vehicle with a longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs, resulting in an athletic stance with greater presence. More pronounced flared wheel arches, and the impactful simplicity of cleanly sculpted surfaces, help lend the Corolla an exterior elegance. When viewing the profile, there is a sweeping character

The Toyota Corolla has an all-new design for 2014, adding some excitement to one of the most popular cars around. crease in the body’s sheet metal that spans the length of the sedan and accentuates the integrated door handle design. The 2014 Corolla’s exterior form tapers towards the front and rear of the vehicle to emphasize the wheel arches, with a longer, faster sloping roofline that blends into a shorter rear deck to lend the sedan a sportier image. The new Corolla’s athletic character is complemented by a broad range of styled alloy wheel and wheel cover options ranging from covered 15-inch steel wheels to 17-inch alloy wheels. The new Corolla will also offer three new exterior colors.

INTERIOR

The 2014 Corolla’s interior matches the visual impact of the exterior and adds a new level of refinement. The passenger cabin features a clean, horizontally oriented dash panel design that adds to the interior’s sense of spaciousness. The instrument panel and surrounding areas are finished in premium materials with piano black surfaces, metallic accents and decorative pin-striping to help elevate the compact car experience. Exquisite texture graining and soft touch material covers the top of the dash panel and key touch points in the cabin. Adding to the cabin’s elevated tone, Corolla offers a choice of

seat-covering materials in premium fabric or available SofTex™ material. Attention to detail is demonstrated in the ornamental stitching spanning the length of the dash panel and the shift boot that adorns the center console’s shifter lever. Sound insulation has been strategically placed along the fenders, cowl, and behind the dash panel to reduce noise entering the cabin helping occupants enjoy Corolla’s available audio systems and connectivity features. The premium interior extends to the rear seat as well. The new Corolla’s longer 106.3inch wheelbase creates a more spacious interior, with a rear seat area that

is 2.95-inches longer than the previous model, to offer outstanding rear leg room.

EFFICIENCY

The 2014 Corolla will also offer a new LE Eco grade that is differentiated by a more efficient 140-horsepower, 1.8-liter engine with Valvematic technology; improved aerodynamics; and low rolling resistance tires. The Corolla Eco-badged models will achieve an estimated highway fuel economy rating of over 40 mpg thanks to the new Valvematic engine combined with a newly developed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The Corolla L, LE, and S grade models

are all powered by a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine with intelligent Variable Valve Timing (VVT-i) that produces 132 horsepower. While the new Corolla has taken the exterior and interior to new levels, the model remains committed to delivering world-class fuel economy in the compact segment. The Corolla LE and S offer a newly developed continuously variable transmission (CVT). This new advanced transmission, named CVTi-S, helps increase the Corolla’s fuel economy and provide its smooth and efficient power transfer.

2014 FORD F-150

Ford expands F-150 lineup www.cargazing.com

F

ord, the industry’s truck leader, enters 2014 with a bigger, bolder lineup of F-150 pickups. New for 2014 is the Sunset Metallic color, which joins last model year’s new hues Blue Jeans Metallic, Kodiak Brown Metallic and Ruby Red Clearcoat Metallic as part of an even wider array of color options for truck buyers. F-150 style also is enhanced with new 18- and 20-inch wheels offered in various trim packages.

CONNECTIVITY BOOST

Ford’s innovative connectivity technology SYNC with MyFord Touch improves the driving experience while allowing drivers to keep both hands on the wheel. This technology is optimized for truck owners with specialized buttons they can operate while wearing gloves, and a larger screen for improved readability. A conductive cell phone charging station is a standalone dealerinstalled accessory and is available on the FX, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited.

TREMOR

The short-wheelbase, regular-cab Tremor goes on sale for 2014 delivering distinctive looks and performance. The all-new truck couples the style of the FX Appearance Package

Ford’s new Tremor sport truck offers a unique look and excellent EcoBoost performance. with an EcoBoost engine and a launch-optimized 4.10 rear axle – the shortest final drive ratio offered in an EcoBoost F-150 – helping provide customers with fast acceleration. Tremor signals its sport truck capabilities with a custom-inspired FX Appearance Package featuring stealthy, flat-black accents that include unique 20inch flat-black wheels, stylized bodyside graphics and black badges with red lettering. Tremor is the only regular-cab F-150 offering a flow-through center console and bucket seats. Interior touches include black leather seating surfaces with red piping,

brushed-metal accents and a red-stitched steering wheel. Alcantara seat inserts add texture and style as well. “The new Tremor gives F-150 customers yet another option to drive a highly capable, distinctive performance truck with features typically found only in the aftermarket,” said Brian Bell, F-150 product marketing manager. “Plus, the Built Ford Tough EcoBoost engine is available for the first time in a shortwheelbase F-150.” F-150 Tremor is powered exclusively by Ford’s groundbreaking 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. An electronic locking rear differential that’s

standard for both two- and four-wheeldrive versions helps deliver the power to the pavement by improving traction during takeoff. Connectivity comes standard on F-150 Tremor with MyFord Touch powered by SYNC. Designers have optimized the physical interface for MyFord Touch to accommodate truck users who may be wearing work gloves by providing easy access to climate controls and audio presets on the center stack.

RAPTOR

Ford is responding to record sales demand and is raising the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor bar

again, continuing to offer industry-exclusive beadlock-capable wheels to help increase grip in low-traction conditions for the 2014 model. The Raptor offers highintensity discharge (HID) headlamps for improved visibility, and SYNC with MyFord Touch for added connectivity. Sunset Metallic – an all-new exterior color – is available for 2014. Raptor offerings build on internal triplebypass FOX Racing Shox dampers, Torsen front differential and front-mounted camera technologies for even more high-performance off-road capability. Raptor’s available forged wheel combines the proven reliability of a

conventional wheel with the capability to convert to a true beadlock wheel. Beadlock wheels secure the edges of a tire to the wheel between two surfaces so the tire is unlikely to roll off the rim if it’s aired down to very low pressure, providing extra grip on trails. Raptor’s wheels are unique, because converting from conventional rim to beadlock-only requires customers unbolt the standard outer decorative ring, dismount the tire from its conventional position, then remount it in the proper lockable position with the available beadlock ring kit from Ford Racing.

2014 RAM HEAVY DUTY

Ram still king of capability www.cargazing.com

R

am Truck brand offers the most capable heavyduty pickups in the segment – the 2014 Ram Heavy Duty line features a list of best-in-class titles in the segments number one purchase reason, capability: • Towing – Up to 30,000 pounds with Ram 3500 • Towing – Up to 17,970 pounds with Ram 2500 • Payload – Up to 7,320 pounds with Ram 3500 • Power – 850 lb.-ft. of torque with 6.7-liter Cummins • Power – 410 horsepower and 429 lb.ft. of torque with all-new 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 • Capacity – Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 37,600 pounds with Ram 3500 Pricing for the new 2014 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty starts at $29,600, plus $1,095 destination. The 6.4-liter HEMI option is priced $1,495 greater than a similarly equipped 5.7-liter HEMI -powered Ram Heavy Duty pickup and is the first gas engine available in the dual rear wheel 3500. “You only need to look down the road to understand the Ram Heavy Duty customer and the capabilities that are required,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO -— Ram Truck Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “The 2014 Ram Heavy Duty 2500 and 3500 allow you to move more weight than any competitor while enjoying best-in-class ride and handling.” Ram 2500 and 3500

The Ram 3500 can tow up to 30,000 pounds, leading the heavy-duty pickup segment for 2014. Heavy Duty trucks also add new innovation, including an all-new, five-link coil suspension with optional air suspension on Ram 2500 and a supplemental air bag suspension option on Ram 3500.

ENGINEERING

Heavy-duty trucks generally have suspension equipped for constant, heavy payloads. This can result in a harsher ride when unloaded. Ram innovation leads again for 2014. The new Ram 2500 takes lessons learned from the Ram 1500 and adds an all-new, segment exclusive five-link coil rear suspension system

for best-in-class ride and handling and new air suspension system. The exclusive five-link coil design provides better articulation over obstacles than a leaf spring system, and the robust coil springs are more than up to the task of handling the loads required of a Heavy Duty Ram 2500 — up to 17,970 pounds for towing. The 2014 Ram 2500 also will offer a segmentexclusive rear air suspension system. An air bag replaces the coil spring, much like the Ram 1500. For 2014 Ram 2500 offers gooseneck (center-positioned ball in the bed) or fifth wheel capability. Ram is unmatched in terms

of offering the most complete ‘hitch ‘n go’ towing prep package found anywhere in the heavy-duty category. Additionally, Ram features an in-box connection junction, and a standard Class 4 and 5 receiver hitch with a four and seven pin connector on the bumper. Ram offers two different dual alternator systems on the 2014 Ram Heavy Duty providing additional power for higher electrical loads from commercial vehicle upfits and accessories. New for 2014, Ram Heavy Duty models, equipped with the Cummins 6.7-liter diesel engine, will offer dual 220-amp alternators (best-in-class 440 amps).

Both the Ram 2500 and 3500 equipped with the new 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 gas engine also will offer a dual-alternator system – the first gasdriven application of its kind in either class – that combines 220- and 160amp units for 380-amps of total best-in-class output.

POWERTRAIN

With Chrysler Group’s all-new 6.4-liter HEMI V-8, the 2014 Ram Heavy Duty will deliver to bestin-class horsepower and best-in-class torque among pickups with gasoline engines. Engineered to deliver capability, durability and bang for the buck, the largest displacement

V-8 in its class provides a worthy gas-powered option to the segment’s overall standard-bearer – the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel. Compelling numbers tell the story of the new 16-valve engine with 410 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and a peak torque rating of 429 lb.-ft., at 4,000 rpm. Other engine options include the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, standard equipment for the Ram 2500 and 3500 (SRW). The engine produces 383 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and generates peak torque of 400 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. The 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 is mated to a 66RFE six-speed automatic transmission.

T

he 2014 Honda Odyssey minivan is refreshed with a host of powertrain, styling, interior, feature and safety upgrades, all designed to meet the needs of today’s family. Key changes to the 2014 Odyssey minivan include the addition of a standard 6-speed automatic transmission on all trims resulting in classleading fuel-economy ratings, enhanced safety equipment, cleaner front and rear exterior styling, plus revised instrumentation and electronic controls. The 2014 Honda Odyssey will have a starting MSRP of $28,825. This represents only a $150 increase in base price for a thoroughly revised Odyssey equipped with additional standard features for increased convenience.

Honda Odyssey, the industry’s longtime minivan leader, gets a long list of improvements for the 2014 model year.

REFINEMENTS

With the addition of a standard 6-speed automatic transmission paired to the 3.5-liter, 24-valve, SOHC, i-VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), the Odyssey further solidifies its place as the fuel economy leader in the minivan segment with all 2014 models offering EPA fuel economy ratings of 19/28 mpg1 city/highway (model-year 2013 EPA ratings were 18/27 mpg on all models except Touring and Touring Elite). Further enhancing occupant safety, the 2014 Odyssey receives the next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure. The reinforced frontal structure improves frontal crash energy management

through a wider range of offset and oblique collision modes. With the revised structure, the 2014 Odyssey is anticipated to earn the highest rating of TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), including a GOOD rating in the stringent new IIHS small overlap frontal collision test. The Odyssey is expected to be the first minivan to earn a TSP+ from IIHS. For 2014, the Odyssey continues with its successful model grade strategy: five different available trim levels include the well-equipped base LX model, EX, the leather-trimmed EX-L, the feature-packed Touring, and the line-topping Odyssey Touring Elite. A

DVD Rear Entertainment System (RES) and Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with Voice Recognition are available on EX-L models and above. New exterior colors for 2014 are Modern Steel Metallic and Obsidian Blue Pearl. Interior colors include Beige, Gray and Truffle for the new highquality fabric that features a refined and dynamic new weave pattern on LX and EX models, while the EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite feature leather upholstery. A full range of genuine Honda accessories is also available.

There’s an App for That

CARS BECOMING CLOSELY INTEGRATED WITH SMARTPHONES

From the bag phones of the 1980s to the iPhones and Androids of today, cell phones are increasingly being integrated with the driving experience, and the ultimate expression of that in 2014 vehicles is the in-car app.

A

s long as cell phones have been around, people have been eager to adapt the new technology to cars. Since many people use their smartphones or MP3 players to carry their music library around, it’s logical to connect it to the car for use while driving. That way they can use those same familiar knobs and buttons to control their music from the phone and play it through the car’s sound system.

WHAT

COMPATIBILITY

THEY DO

For the most part, the most popular in-car apps mirror services offered directly on smartphones, only they do so through the car’s digital display. It makes perfect sense. Most of today’s new cars are available with some sort of digital screen, whether a large navigation display or a smaller screen behind the steering wheel. By linking your vehicle to your cell phone’s digital data, you can access online services to stream digital music with Pandora, make dinner reservations with OpenTable or read reviews of local venues on Yelp.

QUICK DEVELOPMENT

Seeing an opportunity here, auto makers have been fast to roll out

suites of apps that are designed to work via the car’s digital display and interface. Some results are better than others.

Many apps are easier to use on the phone itself than through the car, but others — especially music apps — are better and safer to use via the

car’s own interface. Drivers are used to adjusting the volume and changing songs or stations using knobs on the dash, for example.

As apps gain popularity, one of the problems that arises is the compatibility of new cars and new devices as they roll out. Most phones will either connect to the car using a USB cable or wirelessly using Bluetooth, but different versions of software and hardware don’t always work well together. And software upgrades for both your phone and car could cause compatibility issues down the road. If connectivity is important to you, make sure you bring your phone on your test drive to see exactly how it connects and which features are available.

Safer Than Ever

TECHNOLOGY PLAYING BIGGER ROLE IN 2014 CARS

S

afety is one of the biggest concerns of new-car buyers, especially those who regularly drive with children in the vehicle.

Safety is one of the biggest concerns of new-car buyers, especially those who regularly drive with children in the vehicle. There’s good news for 2014: today’s latest cars are adopting more technologies than ever before to keep their occupants safe. Here’s a look at a few of the features that are available this year:

spot. And if you signal to change lanes while a car is there — making your car sense that a collision might be imminent — many of these systems will also issue an audible alert.

ACTIVE SAFETY

BACKUP CAMERAS

This isn’t a particularly new technology, but it is getting widespread use in 2014. Rear-view video cameras are now standard equipment on a wide range of vehicles, most commonly SUVs and crossovers because of their size, but also some smaller sedans, too. These rear-view cameras can help drivers see what’s below the bumper and behind their car when backing up, making them a musthave safety feature for many buyers.

Rear cross-path detection is designed to alert the driver when cars are approaching from the sides, where rear-view cameras often don’t see clearly.

REAR CROSS-PATH DETECTION This feature addresses a weakness of video cameras: their often narrow field of vision. When drivers rely too much on video cameras when backing up, as opposed to their own eyeballs, they can’t always see cars driving toward them on the horizon. Rear cross-path detection senses when

cars are driving toward you when you’re in reverse, even if those cars are outside the field of vision for your camera. It gives an audible warning to let the driver know there’s an oncoming vehicle nearby.

LANE DEPARTURE WARNING A nice feature for drivers who may be distracted or sleepy,

lane departure warning will alert you if you veer outside of your lane. Video cameras in the front of the car will look for stripes in the road, and if the driver appears to be leaving their lane without signaling, the car will give a warning. On most cars, this is just an audible beep, but a few will also produce a vibration in the steering wheel or seat to get the driver’s attention.

BLIND SPOT MONITORING This feature addresses the nightmare of student drivers everywhere: the blind spot. Blind spot monitoring uses radar sensors to detect when a car is in your blind spot, the place a driver can’t see in their rear-view mirrors. On most of these systems, a light will show up in your side mirror when there’s a vehicle in your blind

Unlike passive safety features like air bags and seat belts that protect you after a collision has occurred, active safety features are all about taking steps before the crash happens. Some luxurycar brands, like Mercedes-Benz, have been pioneering this technology for years, but it’s filtering down to more affordable cars now. Many vehicles offer forward collision warning sensors that will set off an alarm — usually lights and sounds from the dash — if they detect you’re going to hit a car in front of you, with the goal of getting the driver’s attention at the last second. Other cars will do things like lock the doors, pre-tension the seat belts, prime the brakes, or even apply braking pressure automatically if it senses a wreck is about to occur.

2014 TOYOTA TUNDRA

Tundra gets fresh design www.cargazing.com

T

he redesigned 2014 Toyota Tundra half-ton full-size pickup truck adds dramatically bold elements of design, refinement, quality and craftsmanship, while building upon Tundra’s well-known reputation for reliability, efficiency and function, making it the most stylish, valuedriven and capable Tundra yet. “Toyota prides itself on listening to its customers and the development of the 2014 Americanborn Tundra is a perfect example,” said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. “Tundra’s new exterior design and new interior were inspired by customer feedback requesting a more chiseled exterior and refined interior, with improved driver ergonomics, and easyto-use technology, giving customers more of what they want.” Tundra has been a quality leader with Toyota’s DNA of Quality, Dependability and Reliability. The industry has recognized Tundra with a myriad of awards over the last 12 years, including the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study for seven of the past eight years in the Full-Size Pick Up segment. Not resting on its laurels, the 2014 Tundra is redesigned, inside and out, representing the first major change since the 2007 model year.

The 2014 Toyota Tundra gets a new design, both inside and out, that makes it more stylish and refined.

AMERICAN ROOTS

The redesigned Tundra continues to be a truck with true American roots that was once again engineered by Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., and its new look created by Calty Design Research centers in Newport Beach, Calif., and Ann Arbor. Tundra’s V6 and V8 engines are built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama, Inc. in Huntsville, Ala., and transmissions are built at a production facility in North Carolina. Finally, Tundra continues to be assembled exclusively

at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, in San Antonio, Texas. “With the redesigned 2014 Tundra, Toyota will continue to focus on customer respect and loyalty by providing the highest-quality, bestbuilt, best value pickup in the full-size segment,” said Fay. “It’s what our customers expect and what they deserve.”

LINEUP

The 2014 Tundra has a grade strategy consisting of the hard-working SR, volume-leading SR5, the well-appointed Limited, and two premium grades: “Platinum” and the all-new “1794 Edition.” The new 1794 Edition is a tribute to the ranch, founded

in 1794, on which the Tundra plant is located in San Antonio. Tundra is offered in three cab styles, two-door Regular Cab, four-door Double Cab and four-door CrewMax, all available in 4x2 and 4x4.

STYLING

The Calty design team set out to create a bold and powerful exterior to embody Tundra’s performance capabilities. The all-new front design integrates the hood and grille for a chiseled and modern industrial image. Designers increased the size of the front fascia and tightened up the surfaces and character lines to visually

punctuate Tundra’s pulling power and wide stance. The grille has a taller, bolder look, visually connecting the upper intake to the lower bumper. The front lower bumpers are now a three-piece design, allowing for lower replacement costs. In addition, the fenders and wheel wells have been squared-off for a wide and sturdy stance.

POWER

Tundra continues to offer three proven powertrains that are among the best in its segment. A 4.0-liter Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) V6 is standard on Tundra Regular and Double Cab models

and produces 270 horsepower and 278 foot-pounds of peak torque. It is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission with uphill/downhill shift logic. The available 4.6-liter, DOHC i-Force V8 offers 310 horsepower and 327 foot-pounds of peak torque. The Tundra workhorse, and still one of the most capable and advanced engines in the full-size pickup segment, is the 5.7-liter, DOHC i-Force V8. Tundra’s most popular engine with owners, it generates 381 horsepower and 401 foot-pounds of peak torque.

2014 GMC ACADIA

Acadia gets additions for 2014 www.cargazing.com

W

ith its reputation for comfort, performance and efficiency, GMC Acadia has remained a popular choice since it was introduced as the brand’s first crossover SUV in 2007. Its luxuryminded Denali model, which came to market in mid-2010, has widened this midsize crossover’s appeal to customers looking for a high level of style, power and functionality. In 2014, the Acadia focuses on safety with the addition of Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning, crash-avoidance systems that use a camera and sensors to help detect when the driver is getting too close to a vehicle ahead, or when the vehicle enters another lane without the use of a turn signal. The systems alert the driver with visual cues on the dashboard, as well as audible signals. They complement Side Blind Zone Alert and Cross Traffic Alert, which were added in 2013. The camera technology was recently named a “Top Ten Tech Breakthrough of 2012” by Popular Mechanics. The new model year also brings an additional convenience feature: two charging-only USB ports on the rear of the center console to power up electronics from the second row.

The GMC Acadia gets some new safety features for 2014, including Forward Collision Alert.

LINEUP

Acadia’s lineup for 2014 includes the SLE (with SLE-1 and SLE-2 trims), the SLT (with SLT-1 and SLT-2 trims) and the Denali models, with seven- or eight-passenger configurations. A 3.6L V-6 VVT engine that uses gasoline direct injection technology powers all Acadia models, optimizing performance and fuel economy across the board. The engine is paired with Acadia’s fuel-saving six-speed automatic transmission to help give FWD models an EPA-estimated 24 mpg on the highway. The transmission controls provide quick and

consistent shifts for a commanding feel behind the wheel. All-wheel drive is also available. Towing capability for the Acadia is 5,200 pounds, when properly equipped. Known for its interior functionality especially popular with families, including the SmartSlide seating system, Acadia allows easy access to the third row for both sevenand eight-passenger seating configurations. Additionally, the second and third row still fold flat for class-leading maximum cargo space, including the ability to carry 48-inch-wide sheet goods, such as drywall and plywood.

DENALI

The 2014 Acadia Denali, available in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models with seven- and eightpassenger seating configurations, continues to turn heads on the road. With signature design cues including a monochromatic exterior highlighted with chrome accents, the Denali exudes luxury through its many high-end details. Some of Denali’s impressive exterior design cues include unique body-side moldings with chrome accents and Denali badges, dual flowthrough chrome exhaust outlets that are integrated

into the rear fascia, High-Intensity Discharge headlamps and 20-inch machined aluminum wheels (chrome wheels are optional). Denali’s standard comfort and safety features continue to inspire drivers on the inside, too, with interior features such as perforated leather seating and a leatherwrapped steering wheel with mahogany inserts. Denali-specific aluminum trim and accent lighting in the footwells and sill plates add to the interior ambience, while heated and cooled seats provide an extra level of relaxation. Technology continues to play a role in

the Denali with the Color Touch navigation system, which allows drivers to use a wide range of functions from a touch screen infotainment center, including music, maps, Bluetooth, weather and more. When it comes to safety, the Acadia Denali is up to the task with the Side Blind Zone and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a radar system that helps detect things drivers might not see in a blind zone. Also standard on Denali models – and all Acadia models – is hill-hold assist braking technology, which applies the brakes for 1.5 seconds when the driver’s foot leaves the brake pedal on inclines of 5 percent or steeper.

2014 BUICK ENCORE

Encore gets new safety features www.cargazing.com

T

he Buick Encore returns for 2014 with new safety features that complement the luxury amenities, refinement and signature Buick style for this unique crossover. The new features include Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Side Blind Zone Alert. Encore is maneuverable, versatile and efficient, offering a uniquely sized package that’s unmatched in the luxury segment. With room for five and up to 48.4 cubic feet of storage space when the rear seats are folded, it delivers substantial cargo capacity along with a confident, higher driving position and available all-wheel drive. Buick’s exclusive QuietTuning is standard and includes active noise cancellation technology. Additional standard features include 10 air bags, StabiliTrak stability enhancement and a 138-horsepower (102 kW) Ecotec 1.4L turbo four-cylinder/six-speed automatic powertrain, along with technologies such as Buick’s voiceactivated IntelliLink. It uses Bluetooth or a USB to connect the driver’s smartphone to a seveninch, high-resolution, full-color display radio. Encore’s 33-mpg (FWD model) highway estimate is greater than competitors such as the Mini Countryman S (EPA-estimated 25 city / 32 highway with the automatic transmission) and the Volkswagen

The 2014 Buick Encore is designed to be both luxurious and fuel efficient. Tiguan (EPA-estimated 21 / 26). Its combined fuel economy of 28 mpg also beats the combined EPA fuel economy of Ford’s most efficient version of the Escape crossover (26). The 2014 Encore is offered in front-wheel and available all-wheeldrive configurations in four trim levels: Encore (1SB), Encore Convenience (1SD), Encore Leather (1SL) and Encore Premium (1SN).

DESIGN

Encore’s sculpted styling identifies it as a contemporary Buick. Signature cues include a waterfall grille, chrome accents and surrounds,

portholes on the hood and painted lower panels. Standard bodycolor door handles with chrome strips and a styled, stainless steel exhaust tip add to the premium look. Blue-accented halogen composite projector-beam headlamps and detailed taillamps further enhance the Encore exterior; and 18-inch, five-spoke painted aluminum wheels are standard. Seven-spoke chromed aluminum wheels are available. All eight exterior colors include a lower accent color: Quicksilver Metallic, Satin Steel Gray Metallic, Carbon Black Metallic, Ruby Red Metallic and Brilliant

Blue Metallic (with Dark Argent Metallic lower accent); Cocoa Silver Metallic and Deep Espresso Brown Metallic (with Dark Cocoa Ash lower accent); and White Pearl Tricoat (Satin Nickel Metallic accent). Inside, the Encore’s distinctive styling carries over to a flowing instrument panel that wraps naturally into the door panels. A prominent central instrument panel houses the seven-inch, highresolution, full-color display for the standard IntelliLink voiceactivated infotainment system. It also features displays for the SiriusXM satellite radio and standard rearview camera, as well as the

available GPS-enabled navigation system.

QUIET RIDE

Buick’s exclusive QuietTuning is designed to block or absorb sound and dampen or eliminate vibrations. For the Encore, specific content was applied to achieve 30 sound benchmarks for refinement, including Buick’s first application of Bose Active Noise Cancellation. It uses ceiling-mounted microphones to detect audible engine noise, the frequencies of which are processed by a computer that directs counteracting sound waves through the audio

system’s speakers and subwoofer.

TURBO ENGINE

Buick Encore is powered by an efficient, power-dense Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission. It generates an SAEcertified 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,850 and 4,900 rpm. The wide rpm range for the maximum torque – a specific trait of turbocharged engines – helps it deliver a better driving experience and performance.

2014 FORD FUSION

Fusion raises the bar on style www.cargazing.com

I

n the fiercely competitive midsize segment, if you aren’t constantly moving forward, you’re already falling behind. In the pursuit of continuous improvement, the still-fresh 2014 Ford Fusion is heading into its sophomore season with a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost® engine, more technology, new color options and available rear outboard inflatable seat belts.

NEW COLORS

Since its debut at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the new Fusion has been acclaimed as a design leader in the midsize sedan segment and honored with numerous awards including Autoweek magazine’s Best in Show and the EyesOn Design Award for Design Excellence – Production Vehicle. For 2014 several new color combinations are available starting with two new exterior colors, Dark Side and Sunset. Fusion SE customers who prefer the carryover Sterling Gray exterior can opt for the Dune interior with either cloth or leather seating surfaces. The new Interior Appearance Package for Fusion Titanium includes premium leather seating surfaces and vinyl door inserts finished in Brick Red along with premium

The 2014 Ford Fusion continues its design leadership with the addition of interior and exterior colors this year. floor mats. No matter what the climate, Fusion helps to keep things comfortable in the cabin. Titanium customers can add cooled seats for the driver and front passenger for those steamy summer days. When the temperature drops, the available heated steering wheel will keep the driver’s fingers warm. Fusion SE drivers who get the Luxury Package can now open doors and start the engine without reaching for a key thanks to Intelligent Access with push-button start.

SAFETY

Safety experts acknowledge that the

back seat is the safest place for children and Ford is committed to keeping all vehicle occupants safe. The optional inflatable rear seat belts that Ford debuted on the 2011 Ford Explorer are now available on Fusion for the first time. In the event of a collision the rear belts inflate, distributing the load over a larger area and reducing the risk of abdominal, chest and shoulder injuries for rear passengers.

POWER

“EcoBoost is a technology that’s really resonating with customers around the world and especially in the United

States,” said Joe Bakaj, vice president of powertrain engineering. “Since introducing EcoBoost to the respective lineups, more than 40 percent of F-150, 51 percent of Fusion and nearly 90 percent of Escape vehicles have been sold with one of these advanced engines.” The 1.5-liter is the fifth member of Ford’s family of fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines. Like the other engines in the lineup, this new powerplant features turbocharging, direct gasoline injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing. The 1.5-liter also adopts several design features that debuted on the award-winning 1.0-liter

three-cylinder EcoBoost engine coming to the 2014 Ford Fiesta. Just as with the 1.0-liter, the engineers focused on reducing internal friction and weight of the 1.5-liter while improving specific output. Reducing unnecessary work has been a major focus on all Ford vehicles in recent years, and the 1.5-liter EcoBoost adds a major new innovation with a clutched water pump. Instead of pumping coolant through the engine continuously even when it is cold, this is the first Ford engine that decouples the water pump until it is needed. This enables the engine to warm up faster for reduced cold-

start emissions and fuel consumption and more comfort on cold winter mornings.

MORE GRIP

Since its debut in 2012, the Ford Fusion has been widely praised by reviewers and customers for its outstanding driving dynamics including excellent balance between ride quality and handling, as well as exceptional steering feel. For 2014 enthusiast drivers can up the ante with an optional summer-only tire package with 19-inch alloy wheels. The Ford Fusion is produced at Ford’s Hermosillo, Mexico, facility.

he Lincoln MKX remains one of the segment’s most powerful crossovers. The five-passenger crossover has best-inclass fuel economy and impressive standard horsepower. It also has standard voice-activeated SYNC with MyLincoln Touch, heated and cooled front seats, reverse sensing system and remote keyless entry and start. Extensively refreshed for the 2011 model year, the 2013 Lincoln MKX rolls into showrooms with enhancements that make it even more appealing. Available in front-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations, the 2013 MKX, on sale now, has a starting MSRP of $39,575.

CHANGES

Dramatic 22-inch polished aluminum wheels become available late in the model year. These wheels expand the wheel offerings beyond the standard 18-inch rims and optional 19and 20-inch choices. Contemporary new exterior colors include Kodiak Brown Metallic Tri-coat, Ginger Ale, Ruby Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat and Smoked Quartz Metallic Tinted Clearcoat. Expanded SYNC functionality includes standard operator Assist and local Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities for laptops and tablets.

The Lincoln MKX continues to lead luxury crossovers in power, technology and refinement.

SAFETY

Standard Curve Control is part of the vehicle’s AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control. Curve Control helps drivers maintain control when taking a curve too quickly, an error contributing to some 50,000 crashes in the U.S. annually. Safety is a key Lincoln MKX feature, and the model earned a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. To earn this ranking, a vehicle must offer electronic stability control as well as achieve a rating of “good” in offset frontal-, side and rear-impact crash tests and roof strength evaluations. In addition to standard electronic stability control, the Lincoln MKX premium

utility features a solid unibody construction, which provides an energy-absorbing structure to help protect occupants. Bumper-tobumper flow-through side rails, structural design and A-pillars are meant to better manage crash energy. Nearly half of the stiff shell is composed of high-strength steels, such as boron, for both increased strength and reduced weight. When a crash becomes unavoidable, MKX relies on an array of airbags and other technologies to help protect occupants. Two front secondgeneration airbags and two side airbags are joined by a Safety Canopy consisting of side-curtain airbags for two rows of passengers. The first-row safety belts feature pretensioners

and an energy management system with adjustable D-ring height in the first row.

TECHNOLOGY

MKX was also the launch vehicle for Lincoln’s industry-first SYNC with MyLincoln Touch driver connect technology. This technology provides an intuitive, easy-to-use system for accessing a multifunction

color display and infotainment color display. This technology puts customers in control of what they want when they want it – through voice, touch or a mix of both. Settings and controls can be personalized to the customer’s interests and level of engagement desired. Standard with MyLincoln Touch are

two 4.2-inch color LCD screens in the cluster controlled by two fiveway switches on the steering wheel and an 8-inch color LCD touch screen in the center stack. Lincoln MKX offers excellent standard horsepower (305) and torque (280 lb.-ft.) through a 3.7-liter V6 engine featuring twin independent variable camshaft timing.

New Trend: Going Electric ELECTRIC POWER IS BECOMING A MAJOR PART OF THE AUTOMOTIVE WORLD

A

Hybrids have used electricity to save some gasoline consumption for years now, but that’s just the beginning. The scope and breadth of today’s electriccar market is wider than ever before, making it rather

nother major trend for 2014 is automakers continuing to roll out new, innovative versions of electric-powered cars.

confusing to sort through the different types of power systems on the market. Here’s a look at several broad categories of electrified cars.

HYBRID

The most widely available fuel-saving car today, a hybrid uses a combination of a gasoline engine and electric motor to improve fuel economy. The key thing to understand is that hybrids are designed, for the most part, to use both gasoline power and electrical power at the same time. They may be able to drive very briefly in “EV” electric-vehicle mode, but most of the time your engine will be running like a normal car. The boost it gets from the electric power train just means it uses less gas.

PLUG-IN HYBRID A few cars are available as a special “plug-in” hybrid car. They usually come with a beefier battery pack than traditional hybrids and can drive for several miles on purely electric power before the gasoline engine kicks in. As the name suggests, you can plug them into the wall to keep them charged up, maximizing the amount of time they can drive on purely electric power. For the most part, though, the electric power range is relatively short, so most drivers will

that their range is finite. Until a more extensive fast-charging network is rolled out, drivers won’t be able to realistically take long trips in their pure electric cars and will still need something powered by gasoline as a second car.

end up relying on gas power at some point with plug-in hybrids.

MILD HYBRID

Mild hybrids are designed to save some fuel, but they use smaller, less powerful, less expensive batteries and charging systems than traditional hybrid cars. While normal hybrid cars may be able to drive briefly under purely electric power, for example, mild hybrids cannot. They have electricitybased designs that save some fuel, but they typically don’t get as dramatic a boost in miles per gallon. The upside is that there’s less of a cost premium when buying one.

EXTENDED-RANGE ELECTRIC

General Motors is the main proponent behind the concept of an “extended range” electric car, referring to the Chevrolet Volt and the new-for-2014 Cadillac ELR. These cars are designed primarily to work as electric vehicles, running all the time on battery power. But unlike pure electric cars, they also carry a small gasoline engine that can work as a generator to keep the electric power flowing indefinitely on long trips. This best-of-both-worlds approach makes sense, but it comes at a cost. The engineering, added weight and production expense of building a gas-powered generator and an electric drivetrain make them considerably more expensive than many electric-only cars.

PURE ELECTRIC

A purely electric-powered car doesn’t have a gasoline engine. The upside is that, because they don’t need that engine and all its related components, they’re less expensive and lighter weight than comparable hybrid cars. That means they can drive a long way on electric power before the batteries run out of juice. The downside, though, is

2014 BMW 4 SERIES

All-new coupe sets standard www.cargazing.com

T

he all-new BMW 4 Series Coupe marks the beginning of a new era for coupes at BMW. Launched as the latest generation of BMW’s sporty mid-size Coupe, the new BMW 4 Series Coupe embodies the very essence of dynamics and aesthetic appeal in the premium segment. The “4” in its title headlines this new product line for the Coupe and emphasizes not only its stand-out design, but that any way you look at it, the new 4 Series Coupe represents something more than its BMW 3 Series cousins – 3+1, if you will. At the same time, as a true BMW Coupe, the new nomenclature brings the new BMW 4 Series Coupe in line with the larger 6 Series and 8 Series Coupes.

LINEUP

The new BMW 4 Series Coupe will be offered as both a 428i, featuring BMW’s award-winning TwinPower Turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and as a 435i with the multi-award winning Twin Power Turbo 3.0-liter inline six. Both will be available with a standard 8-speed sport automatic or six-speed manual transmission. Both will also be offered with a choice of rearwheel drive or with optional xDrive, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel drive system. The 2014 BMW 428i Coupe will have a

Both prices include destination and handling. The 2014 428i xDrive Coupe and 435i xDrive will start from $43,425 and 48,925 respectively, again inclusive of destination and handling. All four variants of the BMW 4 Series Coupe will arrive in US showrooms late this summer.

BIGGER SIZE

The new BMW 4 Series Coupe is visibly larger in width and wheelbase than the outgoing BMW 3 Series Coupe, and its stretched silhouette sits considerably lower to

the road. This, together with its BMW-typical short overhangs, long hood and set-back passenger compartment with flowing roofline, give the BMW 4 Series Coupe a visual balance. The car’s striking front end – with its characteristic BMW design features, such as the double-kidney grille, four round headlights and a large air intake in the front apron – is keen to display its family ties with the BMW 3 Series. New elements of the BMW 4 Series Coupe are the Air Breathers, which are positioned rearwards of the front wheel arches to reduce drag. The Coupe’s muscular wheel arches and wide track give an

aggressive stance, with its prominent horizontal lines.

INTERIOR

The interior of the BMW 4 Series Coupe incorporates sporty styling and pure quality together. In the front of the cabin, an approach known as layering – i.e. the utilization of space through the structuring of lines and surfaces into layers – gives the cabin a driver orientation without excluding the front passenger. All the controls central to driving are arranged ergonomically around the driver providing ready access to all functions. Automatic seat belt valets, a Sport

steering wheel, circular instruments in blackpanel look and the free-standing, flat-screen iDrive monitor give a sense of functional elegance.

TECHNOLOGY

BMW’s groundbreaking user interface has undergone constant improvement and development since its inception in 2002. On the heels of its most recent update, BMW’s iDrive will see significant enhancements for model year 2014. Not only will more models receive the latest iDrive 4.2, but the system gets enhancements that improve the user

experience in the areas of navigation, Advanced Real Time Traffic Information, connectivity, entertainment, online access and voice commands. One example is the ability to engage automatic time setting. When active, the time will automatically be adjusted for Daylight Saving or Standard time as well as changes in time zone while traveling. The latest BMW navigation system, which is optional on the new BMW 4 Series Coupe, has also received many enhancements.
