1957 Thunderbird provided some special times for Hank Bailey and his grandson, Jason Byers. The two of them cruised through Graffiti Weekend events. They spent time together before cruising, deciding what needed to be cleaned, waxed and polished. Hank Bailey of Roseburg died in 2011. Now Byers, 37, is left with the memories. “That was our time,” Byers said of years of activities with his grandfather and the car. “He had a wide smile, he absolutely did, when we were out in it.”
The Thunderbird was inherited by Byers and his parents, Jeff and Joni, but Jason still calls it “Grandpa’s car.” However, his grandmother, Verna Bailey, who is still alive, likes to call it “Jason’s car.” Jason Byers now takes his grandmother for short rides a couple of times a year, usually to Dairy Queen for ice cream. He also drives the T-bird to her assisted living home during Graffiti week so she can see the car again. “She knows the history of the car,” Byers said. “It’s a beautiful car. Winston Summer Nite Cruise keeps growing

The Winston Summer Nite Cruise attracts a mixture of old and new cars for its annual Saturday evening cruise. This 1958 Chevy rolled around the four-mile route last year.
INSTON — The Winston Summer Nite Cruise is continuing to grow. Two years ago the cruise that emphasizes muscle cars, but is open to all cars, pickups and motorcycles, attracted 175 registered entrants. Last year that number went up to 225 and organizer Clay Caldwell is hopeful and optimistic the number will continue to grow during this week’s 26th annual gathering in downtown Winston. The featured event of the two days of activities in Winston is the cruise that is slated for 5 to 10 p.m. Registration will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shop Smart parking lot. The entry fee is $1 per vehicle, but an investment of $5 will also get each car a dash plaque. The cruise is open to all vehicles, including trucks and four-wheel-drives. That’s different than Roseburg’s Saturday night cruise, which is restricted to cars and pickups dated 1975 or earlier. Caldwell explained that there were concerns expressed last year about
traffic control on the Winston cruise course, but that more volunteers will be along the four-mile course this year to monitor traffic control. “I just hope everybody comes out and has a really good time,” said Caldwell, president of the WinstonDillard Area Festival Association. “I’m expecting a lot of fun. “There’s still an emphasis on muscle cars and people in Winston love muscle,” he added. The cruise route will proceed west on Douglas Boulevard, right on Abraham Street to Lookingglass Road, right to Old Highway 99 and then back to the center of town. Other activities include an automotive swap meet that is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on a grassy lot at the Winston Foursquare Church at the corner of Main and Thompson streets. Cars and auto parts alike will be available for sale.

Jim Aune is pleased that the promise he made when he purchased this 1958 Pontiac stationwagon will be fulfilled this week. After several years of driving the car with just a primer on it, he stripped it down, painted it and then put it back together in time for this year’s Graffiti Weekend.
Jim Aune is on the verge of fulfilling a promise. He made the promise back in 1980 when he purchased a 1958 Pontiac station wagon from a neighbor in the Glendale area. The owner, a woman named Bunny, named one condition before selling Aune the car: He had to promise to take care of it. Some stoppages and setbacks occurred along the way — a couple accidents and a shortage of funds — but now Aune is ready to
reveal the finished product and promise at Graffiti Weekend activities that begin Wednesday. “I am pleased,” the 54-year-old Roseburg resident said of how the car looks now compared to when he towed it out of a pasture back in ’80. It had been sitting out in the weather so it was in rusty condition, but after he put a new battery in it and some fuel, it fired right up. “It’s getting exciting,” Aune said of completing final details on the wagon. “It’s been a dream to see it done. It was based on a promise that I was able to get the car and now because of that promise ,I’m getting it back together.” Aune has had the car running before and even drove it in several past
Graffiti events, but it just had a primer paint job and

Shuttles offer rides to events The News-Review Free shuttle bus rides will be available for two of Graffiti Weekend’s most popular activities. Guests attending Saturday’s Stray Angels-River Forks Show-N-Shine at River Forks Park and Umpqua Flatheads Roseburg Graffiti Night Cruise in downtown Roseburg will be able to leave their own vehicles in larger parking lots and travel to those sites by bus. The first bus headed to River Forks Park, located about six miles west of Roseburg in the Garden Valley area, will leave downtown Roseburg at 9 a.m. Buses will start their runs at the corner of Rose and Washington streets and pick up additional passengers at the Macy’s store in

the Roseburg Valley Mall on Stewart Parkway and at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, off Interstate 5 at Exit 123. The pickup spot will be near the museum, across from the main fairgrounds entrance. A new stop this year for the buses en route to the park will be the Graffiti Auto Parts Swap that will be held in the parking area at the Melrose Junction across from the Kruse Farms produce, bakery and gift stand a mile west of Roseburg. The swap is scheduled for noon to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, but will have bus service only on Saturday. The Melrose Junction site is a new location for the swap meet after it had previously been held farther
west off Melrose Road at the Laurance Farms’ former produce stand. The last bus headed back to Roseburg from River Forks Park leaves at 4 p.m. Parking at River Forks Park is limited and show organizers encourage people to take the shuttle buses. Guests coming back to the corner of Rose and Washington will also be close to the Downtown Shop-N-Shine Car Show that is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Roseburg. The evening bus to the cruise downtown will operate from 5 to 10 p.m. Those buses will pick up passengers at Macy’s and the fairgrounds. The last bus heading back to the parking areas will leave downtown at 10:30 p.m.

his 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser was originally purchased in 1957 by Dr. Guy and Francis Gill of Roseburg. When the doctor and his wife passed away, the Mercury was sold to the Brown family and it has continued to remain in that family. The Mercury was purchased in Roseburg and still calls Roseburg its home. The Mercury is now owned by Dona Brown and her husband Jerry Hash (around town they are known as the Hash Browns). The couple have shown the Turnpike around Oregon, Washington and California. It has not missed Graffiti in all the years the Browns have owned it.

ot too many years after trading in his powder-blue 1965 Ford Mustang for a family station wagon, Thurman Bell regretted the transaction. He had bought that Mustang, his first new car, while a senior at Oregon State University in Corvallis. Bell had saved money from summer jobs — picking cotton, cutting grapes and working in construction — in the Fresno, Calif., area and, with some additional financial assistance from his parents, Russell and Veda Bell, he was able to buy the 1965 Mustang with the white interior and the 283-cubic-inch engine
for $3,600. He made several trips in it between Fresno and Corvallis, and then to jobs in Lebanon and Grants Pass. But like so many other young people who purchased the new sporty Mustang, Bell had to trade in his first car in 1969 for a car that would accommodate his growing family. But he
never forgot that Mustang. “It’s something I’ve wanted again for many years, a long time,” said Bell, now 70. “It was the new thing, the hot item back then. I loved that car. I made it a goal to get one. And I’ve always, always regretted letting it go. Turn to MUSTANG, page 13

out of the weather, so it remained in good condition. When Hank Bailey saw the T-bird, it was sitting at the Blackberry Festival in Sutherlin about 20 years ago with a “For Sale” sign on it. “Grandpa saw it, it was the right color, he bought it right there and brought it home,” Byers said. “It was in good running order and the body was in good shape.” Byers added that the only thing done to the car since Bailey’s purchase was reupholstering the seats about 10 years ago. “It is as stock as stock can be,” Byers said. “It runs like a top.” The Thunderbird has a 312-cubic-inch-engine and no air conditioning, so the interior does heat up when the convertible top remains closed.
Byers said his grandfather talked about the Thunderbird even before he purchased one. “It’s a piece of American history, pop culture, an icon of the ’50s,” Byers said. “In the summertime we try to take it as many places as we can. People come up to it all the time and have their own stories about Thunderbirds or they want to take pictures of it. It gets

Mustang: Melrose man rebuilds car’s engine Continued from page 11 “At the time, that car was different than anything else built,” he added. “It was like a little sports coupé.” More recently, Bell, the longtime teacher, counselor and football coach at Roseburg High School, set another goal, and that was to become a Mustang owner again. Inspired by the classic cars he saw during Graffiti Weekend activities in the Roseburg area, he began looking several years ago. Through a friend, Bell heard about Albert Christel, a retired man who restored cars for a hobby at his Melrose area home. Bell made a phone call, the two men met, and in the summer of 2010 a deal was made. Bell became the owner of an electric-red

“A lot of people our age like to reminiscence,” Bell said. “That car brings back a lot of memories. It’s fun to go back and relive our youth.
I lived through those years.” Bell and his wife, Jenny, have driven their Mustang in Graffiti Weekend events in Roseburg the past two years and will tour the cruise course again this Saturday evening. Jenny has also occasionally driven the car to work in Roseburg. Christel explained the Mustang was originally purchased new in San Jose, Calif. He said the first owners eventually passed the car on to their granddaughter who lived in the Roseburg area. When the car began to have some problems, it ended up parked under a tree for several years. That’s where Christel found it. “The paint was worn out, but it wasn’t as bad as it looked,” said Christel, who retired 10 years ago and then made car restoration a hobby.
He stripped down the Mustang. He had a body shop go over the frame and he had the engine and transmission rebuilt. He also purchased new bumpers and chrome. He then put the car back together and drove it himself for a couple of years, including in events during Graffiti Weekend and the Blackberry Festival in Sutherlin. “I had a lot of fun with it,” Christel said. “It was a nice little car. I think
Mustangs are fabulous little cars.” Now Bell is having fun with it. Pontiac: Car has had ups, downs Continued from page 6 The restoration process was first interrupted two years after Aune purchased the car. While towing a parts vehicle behind the wagon on the shoulder of the freeway, the cars jackknifed and the wagon took a major hit. He knew it would be expensive to fix, but he had made a promise. The body work needed resulted in Aune turning the four-door vehicle into a two door. The work then stopped, and the car was even vandalized. It sat idle. Finally, a friend of Aune’s offered to fix it up. He started the restoration and then Aune continued it. In the late 1990s, Aune had the car running again. He put a blue-tinted primer on it in anticipation of a top coat. He drove it for five
years before deciding to finish the project. He took the body off the frame and stripped everything down to bare metal, painted the pieces and gradually put it back together. Aune said the color was supposed to be a two-tone teal, but he said he thinks it’s more of a two-tone green. “It’s kind of an unusual color, but it’s close to what I wanted,” he said. He said the model, which had been a plain 1958 Chieftain wagon, now resembles a ’57 Star Chieftain. He calls it his “Teal Toy: Built on a Promise.” Aune paid $500 for the car back in 1980 and now he estimates with his hours of labor and cost of parts, his prized wagon could be worth $35,000 to $40,000. Back when the car only had
a primer on it, he did have somebody offer to buy it. Aune said no, thanks. “Was it worth it? Yes,” he said, looking back on the work and money he put into customizing the car that features its original motor, a tri-power engine. “I hope I never get desperate for money because it should be worth quite a bit. But I have no intentions of selling it.” He plans to have the car at activities during each of the five days of Graffiti Week.
