Celebrate the season
P
lease enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner today. But then realize the Christmas holiday season will immediately swing into gear, if it hasn’t already.
In order to help you better enjoy the next several weeks leading up to the red-letter day on Wednesday, Dec. 25, this special section — Holiday Events Guide — includes information on many Christmas-related activities. Pick from craft and goodie events, singing, tours of Christmas lights and others. The original meaning of Christmas was to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, although an exact birthday is not known. Historians figure the year of his birth is between 7 B.C. and 2 B.C. Details of his birth are included in two of the gospels in the New Testament of the Bible. The events surrounding the birth are important in the religious celebrations that are planned during the Christmas season. The idea for turning Dec. 25 into a celebration day seems to have started during the Middle Ages in Europe, about 200 years after Christ’s birth. Historians believe there are several events that factored into the date of Dec. 25 being picked for Christmas Day: Nine months after Christians believe Jesus was conceived, the date of the Roman winter solstice and one of the various ancient winter festivals. Beginning about 1840, celebrating Christmas became more widespread. Dec. 25 was declared a federal holiday in the United State in 1870. Although usually considered a Christian holiday, Christmas is celebrated by an increasing number of non-Christians worldwide. Many of the holiday’s popular celebratory customs have pre-Christian or secular themes and origins. Salvation Army volunteer eager to ring in holiday season CRAIG REED The News-Review
T
hat bell-ringing sound never gets old for Norm Wicks. He loves shaking the bell to make it jingle. He loves that the jingle attracts people. He enjoys visiting with those who stop and he hopes they’ll drop a few coins or bills into the Salvation Army bucket that is hanging nearby. Wicks, at 90 years old, is the oldest volunteer ringer in the Salvation Army’s central Douglas County fundraising program. It involves standing outside storefronts, ringing a bell and collecting cash donations from shoppers. The bells will start ringing Friday and continue up to Christmas Day. Wicks of Roseburg has been ringing a bell for about 15 years
and he’ll be back at it during this holiday season. He’s scheduled for nine two-hour sessions in front of either the Fred Meyer store or Bi-Mart in Roseburg. “I’m only 90, I’m healthy and it’s for only two hours,” Wicks said. “I’m a born salesman, I like people and I get to see and visit with people. It’s for a very good cause.” Wicks, now a 10-year retiree, worked for eight years for J.C. Penney Co. and then for 45 years for State Farm Insurance after coming to Roseburg in 1952. He’s a 45-year member of the Kiwanis International service club, the organization through which he became a bell ringer. Wicks doesn’t drive anymore, so he gets rides from his grandson, Kevin Wicks. He also gets company at his Salvation Army station from Laura Michaels, another family member.
“He’s like my Energizer Bunny,” said Chris Freysinger, the administrator for the Salvation Army office in Roseburg. “He energizes me when I see him out there. It’s wonderful to see him out there ringing his bell. We have some volunteers who just love doing this.” Freysinger said Wicks is one of about 200 volunteers who shake the bells and accept donations into the red Salvation Army buckets at 17 different locations in Roseburg, Sutherlin and Winston. The volunteers are from clubs, school groups, churches and businesses, or are individuals. The buckets are generally out from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Last year, the Salvation Army buckets in central Douglas County grossed about $28,000. Freysinger said the money will help 800 Douglas County fami-

Depending on available funds, gifts for seniors and nursing home residents may also be purchased. “We thank the volunteers every year for their time, for their efforts in helping us,” Freysinger said. “In helping us they’re helping their neighbors in Douglas County. “People still give,” she added. “It’s amazing how people in Douglas County help their neighbors.” Wicks said he’s ready for another season of ringing. ANYONVILLE — This year, Mercy Medical Center celebrates two milestones: the Mercy Foundation’s 40th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of the Festival of Trees. Held at Seven Feathers Casino Resort, the Festival of Trees is a major source of funding for Mercy’s Children’s HealthCare Fund. The event is scheduled for Dec. 4 to 7. The highlight of the festival are the themed trees decorated by local people and businesses that will be auctioned off at the Gala Evening event. t’s the largest Christmas display between San Francisco and Seattle, according to the man who spends three months each year setting it up and tearing it down: retired businessman Jack Reilly, the head volunteer. “We outdo Portland even,” he said. “There’s nothing else like this. It’s absolutely amazing.” The Festival of Lights is an annual drive-through display that is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Roseburg. The display, in its 21st year, features more than 500,000 bulbs on more than 90 animated displays synced to music, across a 1.5-mile route.
It begins tonight and runs through New Year’s Day. As always, kids get free candy canes. The whole enterprise is even more impressive, Reilly said, when you consider the whole thing is built by a handful of volunteers — about a dozen Wolf Creek Job Corps students, Reilly and his brother-inlaw Michael Zuelzke, and, this year, about a half-dozen Douglas County Jail inmates on work release. Usually a dependable source of eager workers, the Job Corps this year was hampered by sequestration-caused budget cuts, and thus didn’t accept new students during half the year. Knowing he’d be short-handed this year, he requested inmate help with some of the more labor-intensive aspects of the display. Wearing their distinctive horizontally striped jail jumpsuits, the inmates this year unspooled and connected the vast spiderweb of extension cords and heavy wire. By getting
inmates to do the heavy lifting, it allowed Reilly and his volunteers time to focus on more technical matters, he said. The inmates, none of whom are suspected of serious crimes, Reilly said, spent four days at the park, under the watch of a sheriff’s deputy. On their final day, Reilly bought them doughnuts. “They really like doing it,” he said. “It’s like a field trip for them.” This year there aren’t

Tree permits for sale for $5 Permits to cut Christmas trees are available for the Umpqua National Forest and the Roseburg District Bureau of Land Management through Dec. 24. Permits from both agencies cost $5. Trees available include Shasta, Douglas and white fir. Permit tags include further instructions. Umpqua National Forest Christmas tree permits can be purchased between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Roseburg, Glide, Tiller, Toketee and Cottage Grove offices. BLM permits are available from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Roseburg office, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at Myrtle Creek City Hall and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at the U.S. Forest Office in Glide. Chorale set to perform The Roseburg Concert Chorale will present its 64th annual concert in Myrtle Creek and Roseburg this year. The group will perform twice during the holiday season. The concert will be directed by Jason Heald
of Umpqua Community College and the chorale will again be joined by the Umpqua Community College Chamber Choir. Wine walk, tree lighting set The third annual Winter Wine Walk and Christmas tree lighting, referred to as the Grand Illumination, will be Dec. 7 in downtown Myrtle Creek. Downtown businesses will host regional wineries or self-pour wine. Snacks and in-store specials may
also be available. Carolers and free cookies and hot chocolate for kids will be available. Santa Claus is scheduled to appear at the tree lighting. The wine walk will be from 4 to 7 p.m., and the tree’s Christmas lights will be illuminated at 5:30 p.m. Glasses of wine will be $5. Raffle tickets will be $1 or six for $5.
