Dear NSA Friends and Families, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is proud to have completed another great academic year in 2017-2018! There were many reasons to celebrate this past year at NSA, including the following accomplishments: • Started the new academic year with 882 students schoolwide— the highest enrollment since 2010 • Welcomed 184 new students and 25 new faculty and staff members to the Saints family

• Expanded the enrollment of the Harbour View campus to 145 students • Expanded our partnership with the Hybrid Learning Consortium to offer courses to Middle School students and additional online courses to Upper School students • Celebrated 100% of the senior class being accepted to a college or university - including a very impressive list of schools, such as Cornell, Johns Hopkins University, William & Mary, Wake Forest, Washington & Lee, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Virginia, McGill, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech, as well as many others • Made many physical enhancements to the Main Campus including: renovating the tennis courts, improving the baseball facilities, enhancing the landscaping, installing additional controlled access security systems for the Camp Gym and Cafeteria Building, installing new mansard roofing, new outdoor lighting on campus, as well as purchasing new classroom furniture • Enhanced academic programs with the implementation of the Project Lead the Way curriculum in the Upper School, including a Biomedical and Computer Science track, expansion of offerings in the Middle School for exploratory classes, implementation of the Responsive Classroom in the Lower School, including pre-kindergarten, to further build students’ social and emotional skills and implementation of a research-based phonological awareness and literacy screening, or (PALS) assessments, in Pre-K4 • Concluded our capital campaign, raising over $8 million – the most successful campaign in the school’s history • Surpassed the fundraising goal for the Annual Fund and events for the 2017-2018 academic year as well as secured new members of the Saints Society, our planned giving society Without the continued support of our trustees, faculty and staff as well as our parents, volunteers and friends of NSA, we could not provide our students with an excellent educational experience and a wide range of opportunities for growth. We appreciate your dedication to and belief in NSA and our Saints through the years. We invite you to continue to invest in NSA to make the dreams of our students and our school a reality. NSA DID SO MUCH FOR ME. NOW IT IS TIME FOR ME TO DO ‘SOME GIVING BACK.’

“I

f I had to describe NSA in three words it would be “Just do it!” At NSA, you can do it all. You’re encouraged to try new things, form great friendships, take on difficult challenges and surprise yourself! I started at NSA in first grade in Mrs. Carroll’s class and graduated in 2005. NSA gave me the opportunity to explore anything and everything and has played a huge role in who I am today. Because NSA teachers encouraged me to get involved in playing sports and joining clubs, I was a member of NSA’s football, baseball and basketball teams. I also ran track and was the Student Council Organization president and participated in the Students Against Destructive Decisions Club. After graduating from NSA, that drive to be involved stayed with me. I attended Virginia Tech and graduated in 2010 with a degree in Business Marketing. When I was in college, I tried out for the football team. I wasn’t sure I would make the team, but NSA gave me the courage to try and to step out of my comfort zone. I made the team and ended up in the starting lineup. Now, even after college, I believe in staying involved in my community. I learned this from my parents who were both volunteers at NSA while my brother and I were students. Now married, living and working in my family business in Hampton Roads, I knew I wanted to volunteer at NSA. NSA did so much for me. Now it is time for me do ‘some giving back.’ Because I enjoyed playing sports as a Saint, it seemed the right thing to do to become involved in helping raise money for sports through NSA’s annual Golf Tournament. Additionally, because my favorite class at NSA was art with Mrs. Norcross and Mrs. Mason (where I found my creative side), I enjoy contributing to the arts program at NSA by being a sponsor of the Annual Art Show & Sale. Above all, NSA taught me the value of friendship. When I tell people my best friends are the friends I made in my first grade class, they don’t believe me. But, it’s so true. NSA allowed me to form bonds with people who have opened doors and opportunities in both social and professional settings to this day. For this, I am so grateful. NSA continues to show their appreciation for me, too, by reaching out to alumni and engaging with me – and other alumni! The NSA Alumni On the Road Reunion gatherings are the greatest part of the Alumni Program. When I was 300 miles away from home at Virginia Tech, members of the NSA staff visited me. They invited me and my fellow Hokies to dinner, gave us NSA swag and brought a feeling of home to us. Their visit let us know that even though we were graduates, we were valued and still a part of the NSA family. For these reasons and many more, I know that when it is time for me to have kids, they will attend NSA. I’m proud of NSA and know my children will be in good hands.

WAY S O F G I V I N G T O N S A As an independent school, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy has derived all of its financial support from tuition and voluntary contributions by alumni, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, friends, corporations and foundations since the Academy’s inception in 1966. Donors to NSA are provided with many opportunities to give to the school, whether the gift is to the Annual Fund to support program initiatives, the capital campaign to support our strategic goals or the Saints Society to help provide for the future.

Cash Gifts Most gifts made to NSA are in the form of cash, the most convenient way of giving. Such gifts are tax-deductible and are vital to the support of NSA’s annual, capital and endowment Declan McNamee ’34 needs. You may also make your gift through the automatic debit of your bank account or through the NSA website at nsacademy.org (Support/Donate Now).

Gifts of Stock/Securities Securities are perhaps the best form of assets to use in making a charitable gift. When ownership of a security – which may result in a capital gain if sold – is transferred to NSA, you avoid substantial capital gains taxes and receive a charitable gift tax deduction for the fair market value of the security.

Legacy Gifts Legacy giving, also known as planned giving, provides an opportunity for donors to make provisions for the support of NSA through a deferred gift. Methods of legacy giving may be tailored to suit your needs, and ways of giving may include: gifts through wills, charitable trusts, real estate, life insurance, bequests or life income agreements.

Matching Gifts Many companies will “match” a current or retired employee’s contribution to a non-profit organization. By taking advantage of your company’s matching gift benefit, your donation could be doubled. Please check with your employer to determine if your company supports matching gifts and to obtain the appropriate paperwork to submit with your gift. More than 500 companies match gifts to independent schools.

Other Gifts Gifts may be made in honor or in memory of an individual. Opportunities are also available for named gifts or special memorials to honor a family member, friend or loved one. ANNUAL FUND The Annual Fund is Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s top fundraising priority. Donations to the Annual Fund help fund program initiatives, financial aid, professional development, the arts program and the athletic programs to support the mission of NSA. FLEUR-DE-LIS SOCIETY What is the Fleur-de-Lis Society? Named for the school’s signature emblem, the Fleur-de-Lis Society salutes alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, foundations, corporations and friends who provide leadership gifts of $1,000 or more to the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Annual Fund.

PLANNED GIVING Saints Society The Saints Society was established in 1996 by Past Trustee Sue B. Birdsong to honor generous alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends who have created trusts, bequests or other legacy gifts to benefit Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. All who provide for the future financial security of NSA with legacy gifts are eligible to become members of the Saints Society. Legacy giving, also known as planned giving, is a non-traditional way of making a gift to NSA and taking advantage of special tax benefits as a result. Providing an opportunity for donors to make provisions for the support of NSA through a deferred gift, legacy giving may be tailored to suit your needs. A bequest intention or a planned gift of any size qualifies a donor for membership in the Saints Society. C A P I TA L C A M PA I G N Capital campaign donations support new facilities, major renovations, faculty professional development, endowment and exciting programmatic initiatives. The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Board of Trustees is focused on the future. In 2014, NSA launched a $6 million capital campaign, Our Saints. Our Future. An Investment in Excellence, to address our school’s needs. NSA raised over $8 million with this campaign making Our Saints. Our Future. An Investment in Excellence the most successful campaign in the school’s history. The campaign was based on the four pillars described below: Faculty and Staff • Enhancements to benefits, salaries, retirement match, tuition remission and tuition reimbursement • Leadership development through professional learning communities and new hire mentorship program • Professional development and continuing education at a number of conferences, workshops, school visits and through guest speakers brought to NSA Programs and Technology • Opened STEM Innovation Lab to provide hands-on learning environment • Hired Independent School Management to access current curricula and scheduling to become more student centered and enhance academic offerings (created new master schedule, instituted Middle School Explorations, new internship program in the Upper School and offered new courses in the Upper School) • Created Sandra F. Birdsong Center for Academic Excellence to help all students maximize their academic potential • Created partnership with Hybrid Learning Consortium to offer expanded online learning opportunities for Middle and Upper School students • Launched nationwide Project Lead the Way curriculum in Upper School to offer advanced courses in the biomedical and computer science fields • Enhanced math curriculum with implementation of Singapore Math Program • Created Upper School Internship program offering opportunities for students in the fields of elementary education, business/marketing, philanthropic studies, innovation and technology. • Expanded garden program to include Harbour View garden as well as hydroponics greenhouse on Main Campus • Enhanced Lower School playgrounds on both campuses Capital Improvements and Strategic Initiatives • Opened satellite campus in Harbour View to attract Pre-K through Grade 3 students to our school from this target market (144 students currently enrolled; first class of Harbour View third graders moved to Main Campus fourth grade in 2018-2019 academic year) • Focused efforts on sustainability by keeping tuition affordable for families (awarded $2 million in need-based aid in 2018-2019 to families, 42% of student body receives aid) and securing financial aid donations from the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Educational Foundation • Conducted Economic Impact study of NSA demonstrating the following: Given their strong ties to the NSA community and drawn by the quality of life here, NSA Alumni – more so than other independent school alumni – are returning to the area to work, take on leadership positions, raise families and further invest in the region. Because our alumni return to Hampton Roads to work, NSA and its alumni have a $103 million annual economic impact in Hampton Roads • Enhanced athletic programs by improving baseball complex and tennis courts as well as installing new scoreboards and purchasing new soccer benches for the soccer program • Enhanced arts and athletic program by upgrading sound, lighting and recording systems to our shared areas (including the cafeteria, the Thomas W. Johnson Gymnasium in the Beazley Center and the Arthur E. Jones Athletic Field) • Improved security by installing new outdoor lighting, Automated External Defibrillators (AED), new security cameras and controlled access security systems across the Main Campus • Improved aesthetics on the Main Campus by installing new mansards on Main Campus buildings and updating the landscaping on campus Endowment • Gained 12 new members of Saints Society (our legacy planned giving society that now has 59 members) and had existing members increase their planned support donations • Created new endowment funds and secured new endowment gifts to grow the school’s endowment (currently over $2.5 million) 40

In August of 2016, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved a new Strategic Plan, including a new mission statement, an updated vision statement as well as characteristics of professional excellence and core values that we foster in the NSA community.
