Dear Summer Saints, Welcome to another wonderful season of summer camps and programs at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy! For 32 years, NSA has been offering Summer Camp. I am proud to share all that NSA has to offer through our Summer Camp program and look forward to having your child at Summer Camp this year! Each year we offer a wide variety of camps including academic, sports, craft and adventure camps. There is certainly something fun, interesting and challenging for each camper. Everyone who attends Summer Camp will find that we provide a safe, nurturing and enriching summer camp experience as part of the culture we foster at NSA each and every day. While your child is attending Summer Camp, I invite you to learn more about the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy experience for students in grades Pre-Kindergarten 3 through 12. Our admissions team would be happy to take you on a tour of our campus and share with you exactly what it means to be a Saint. Please contact Rebecca Steigenga, Director of Admissions, at 539-8789 ext. 3348 to schedule a tour. I look forward to seeing you over the summer months, and I wish you an enjoyable and safe summer! All my best,

nts e Russell and NSA Sai Head of School Debbi

I

n the summer of 1982, Jean Mauck, the current Assistant Head of Lower School, started the first Kaleidoscope Camp at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. The camp consisted of 10 campers and one teacher for two weeks of summer activities. Kaleidoscope Camp for younger students and Discovery Camp for older students offered summer opportunities and fun at NSA for over 15 years. In 2000, Richie Lovell ’94 developed the format for the current NSA Summer Programs and, that year, six weeks of summer fun were made available for our campers. Each week campers explored a different theme with classes supporting the theme of the week. The following year a Counselor-in-Training Program was added, as well as the first Specialty and Sports Camps.

In 2006, Academic Camps were added as additional half-day camps and, three years later, Papoose Camp was introduced, offering our youngest campers a full six-week camp program. NSA Summer Programs now include Adventure Camp for rising seventh through tenth graders and Kaleidoscope Camp is available for rising first through sixth graders. These day camps share field trips but the schedules include different ageappropriate activities for all campers. In addition, Papoose, Kaleidoscope and Adventure Camps are a full eight weeks long. The addition of Academic, Sports and Specialty Camps means there is truly something for everyone during the summer at NSA. Please join us for an exciting and enriching summer experience on the campus of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy!

Welcome, Summer Camp Families! We have so many wonderful adventures planned for our campers here at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy this summer! Summer Programs 2014 will spark children’s imaginations, entertain and engage campers of all ages and create memories that will last a lifetime. Active and collaborative learning opportunities have been carefully planned to enrich campers’ summer experiences. Here on the NSA campus, we are proud to offer children opportunities that encourage them to build relationships and gain confidence in their abilities. From our youngest Papoose Camper to the oldest Adventure Camper, there is truly something for everyone at NSA. This summer, Challenger Sports Camps from Baltimore will be back to offer both British and Brazilian Soccer Camps. Little Scholars from Richmond will be onsite with several new innovative classes, including Bulls & Bears and Whiz Kids. Also new this summer, Mad Science will be here from Virginia Beach offering Crazy Chemworks and Secret Agent Lab camps. As always, we will offer some of our camp favorites, including Lego Mindstorm Robotics, Rocketry, Digital Photography and several NSA sports camps led by our very own NSA coaches. Our catalog is designed to help make planning for the summer quick and easy, with camp choices and eligible participation ages listed in order by week. We pride ourselves on designing a camp experience that is tailored to fit each and every camper. Campers can participate in a half-day camp that sparks their interest in conjunction with the full-day camp for that week. We also offer a bus service option to make transportation to and from NSA easy and stress-free. This summer, the bus will stop at Benns Church, Bennett’s Creek Food Lion, Harbour View Riverfront Swim Club, Chesapeake Square and Deep Creek. As Director of Summer Programs for the past 14 years, I am proud to be a part of such a quality program! Each year I look forward to helping families plan a summer experience that is as unique as every child. At NSA, we provide our campers with many choices and offer as much flexibility as possible during the summer months. Our camps fill quickly so I encourage you to sign up early and take advantage of the early enrollment discount to reserve space in the camp of your child’s choice. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or need assistance with registration. I consider it a privilege to spend the summer with our Summer Saints. Let the adventures begin! Happy Camping,

Ann Lovell Director of Summer Programs (757) 539-8789 ext. 2110 | Summer Extension 2504 | alovell@nsacademy.org

Kaleidoscope Ahoy, mates! Let’s go on a pirate adventure! Campers will explore pirate legends and lore before leaving campus to jump aboard the Lost Pearl and set sail for adventures on the high seas in search of treasure. NSA needs some fearless campers, as we may run into some trouble from that scallywag, Blackbeard. We’ll leave the dock in the port of Inlet Station Marina, and from there we will set off to explore the seven seas of Virginia Beach. To keep campers entertained on the voyage, pirates will put on a show and campers will sing sea shanties and dance the limbo. Being a pirate is hungry work, so there’ll be plenty of snacks on board, and lunch will be provided. Keep an eye out for dolphins because they love pirates and often swim alongside. If you are a pirate, or a pirate at heart, and are fearsome and fearless with a taste for nautical fun and adventure, then this is the camp for you. After our pirate adventure, we will visit the Virginia Aquarium, where campers will be treated to an IMAX movie before returning to campus. Lunch will be a complete Subway Meal Deal.

Adventure Adventure Campers are off on an adventure of their own as they board the Rudee Rocket for a fast and exciting trip on the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. Just add water and a 2,000-horsepower engine and you know you are aboard the Rocket. After our adventure, we will visit the Virginia Aquarium, where campers will have the opportunity to experience animal feedings, training sessions and hands-on programs. Campers will be able to visit thousands of animals representing over 300 species before watching an IMAX movie. Lunch will be provided by the Aquarium Café in the Picnic Pavilion.
