UNIT 77: CINEMATOGRAPHY


VOCATIONAL CONTEXT: Many of the content creation jobs that you will embark on in the future will require cross- discipline practise, to develop content and branding for a range of platforms. This unit will equip you with the skills and knowledge to create moving image content as a cinematographer, providing you with the knowledge required to produce both technically competent, and creatively focused, moving image productions. You will produce technical reports, case studies, preproduction planning, moving image content and vlogs as part of this unit, and understand the roles and responsibilities included within.

GRADING CRITERIA



TASK 1: RESEARCH & IDENTIFICATION: You will create a technical report explaining the following: PART 1: Frame Rate Frame Size Shutter Speed Shutter Angle Aperture ISO Recording Formats PART 2: Produce a case study technically detailing (500 words): A minimum of 2 film based moving image cameras A minimum of 2 digital based moving image cameras PART 3: Summarise your findings in a critical comparison between the two pieces of technology focusing on frame rate, frame size, versatility, cost and adaptability. PART 4 Identify 4 lenses used within motion picture shoots, discuss the technical ability of these lenses and their purpose of deployment. This task provides evidence for P1, P2, M1 Checklist of Evidence required to complete task: •

TASK 2: EVIDENCED EXPERIMENTATION: You will use your developed knowledge to shoot the following sequences: Slow motion Isolation Establishing Point of View Dreamscape With this footage you will produce a VLOG piece which looks to critically evaluate your selection of equipment and technical techniques. This task provides evidence for P3, M2, D1 Checklist of Evidence required to complete task: •

TASK 3: MAKING FILM In production teams of 3 you will produce 2 video sequences using one of the available sets of script, suitable for 2 different genres. Begin with sharing pre-production tasks: Location Reports Production Design Script Storyboard Permissions Risk assessment Working in teams you will then shoot each of your two short films for the different genres. Ensure you evidence your production setups and production roles, with clear visual annotation to show your role as Director of Photography, camera operator and key grip. This task provides evidence for P4, P5, P6, P7, P8 Checklist of Evidence required to complete task: • • •

A planning portfolio Evidence presentation 2 independent final sequences


TASK 4: EVALUATE You will gather audience feedback, before producing a VLOG with the purpose of: Reflect on the effectiveness of your final setups, identifying good practice and planning for your future works. Reviewing your works in association with the roles of a motion picture camera department. Using audience feedback to identify areas of improvement for your cinematography processes. This task provides evidence for M3, M4, D2 Checklist of Evidence required to complete task: •
