When Harry Clifton visits his publisher in New York, he’s told that he’s been elected the new president of English PEN, and immediately launches a campaign for the release of a fellow author, Anatoly Babakov, who’s imprisoned in a Russian gulag in Siberia. Babakov’s crime? Writing a book called Uncle Joe, an insight into what it was like to work as the interpreter for Josef Stalin. So determined is Harry to see Babakov released and the book published, that he puts his own life in danger. With a globetrotting plot which takes us from London to Berlin to the frozen Russian steppe, this is Jeffrey Archer’s most accomplished work to date – with all the trademark twists and turns that have made him the world’s greatest storyteller. 9780230748262 I February I £20 I Hardback

What do you snack on while you write?
What is the best piece of writing advice you’ve received?
EDGE OF ETERNITY
9780230710160 I September £20 I Hardback
Which books are on your bedside table? I’m fascinated by 1493: How Europe’s Discovery of the Americas Revolutionised Trade, Energy and Life on Earth, which tells the story of the sixteenth century as an environmental cataclysm. I love the short stories of Henry James, even though his convoluted writing style gets on my nerves. And I’m rereading King Solomon’s Mines, the book that started the entire genre of lostcivilisation novels. Which book changed your life? I was brought up in a family of strict born-again Christians, and as an adolescent I suffered agonizing doubts about the religion I had been
What is the strangest thing you’ve done when researching a book? I went deerstalking in Scotland for A Place Called Freedom. It’s cold, wet and miserable, and you have to crawl on your belly. Purgatory. What keeps you awake at night? Nothing much. If I happen to wake, I figure out what I’m going to write in the morning, then go back to sleep. Who would you like to be stuck in a lift with? Susan Sarandon. What novel would you give a child to introduce them to literature? Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce is a wonderful example of how a novel can take us to a fantasy world.
“writing is the application of the seat of the trousers to the seat of the chair.” If you’re not sitting down, you’re not working. The late Ted Willis told me that.

Nothing. I’ve got my weight down to 155 pounds, and snacks are my enemy.
James Bond. He is the most enduring character in twentieth-century literature.
Is there a favourite book that you wish you’d written? The Silence of the Lambs is one of the greatest suspense novels ever, and Hannibal ‘the Cannibal’ Lecter is the scariest villain in all literature. How would you earn your living if you ever gave up writing? As a student in the 1960’s I was fascinated by computers, and even took a course in computer programming. If I had followed that career, I might now be seriously rich.

On 6 October 1972, Picador published its first list of 8 paperbacks. It was a list that demonstrated ambition as well as cultural breadth, and included great writing from Latin America (Jorge Luis Borges’s A Personal Anthology), Europe (Hermann Hesse’s Rosshalde), America (Richard Brautigan’s Trout Fishing in America) and Britain (Angela Carter’s Heroes and Villains). Within a few years, Picador had established itself as one of the pre-eminent publishers of contemporary fiction, non-fiction and poetry. What defines Picador is the unique nature of each of its authors’ voices. We have launched the Picador Classic series to highlight some of those great voices and bring neglected classics back into print. We have commissioned new introductions from writers and public figures that illuminate these works, as well as putting them into a wider context. Many of the Picador Classic editions will also include afterwords from their authors which provide insight into the background to their original publication. This selection of great writing will be reflected in the production values of all the books: printed on highquality paper stock and with thick cover boards, the Picador Classic series will be a celebration of the physical book. In addition, a dedicated Picador Classic website (www.picador. com/classic) will provide interested readers with a wealth of background information. Whether fiction, journalism, memoir or poetry, Picador Classic represents timeless quality and extraordinary writing from some of the world’s greatest voices. Paul Baggaley

Publisher Picador Classic is a typeface designed especially for this series and used in a considered way for the logo, spine and body text. Created by Dave Farey and Richard Dawson it has taken our idea of reinventing and drawing inspiration from the Albertus font used on the original Picador logo. It retains the shape and feel of the original designed by Berthold Wolpe in 1932 and moves it on to a lighter font with contemporary proportions.

CHRIS GUILLEBEAU I was fascinated by why people chose to invest so much of themselves in a quest or adventure that required a lot of time and sacrifice to complete. The book is about these people and what we can learn from them. Through the process I came to believe in a message that became the central point in the book: a quest can bring meaning and purpose to our lives. Happiness of Pursuit | 9781447276418 September | £12.99 | Trade Paperback
What can you tell us about your new book The Happiness of Pursuit?
Initially many of them came to me through my travels or contacts with friends and readers around the world. I published a previous book, The $100 Startup, which also used the case study method, so I started with that approach. But then, as time went by and the project gained more attention, we did a public call for submissions. I wanted to gather as wide a collection as possible, so that there was something that everyone could relate to. You have visited every country in the world, so which has been your favourite?
a Land Rover in Spain (oops), forgetting about countries and much more. But again, it was 100% worth it. I knew if I didn’t attempt the goal, I’d always regret it. It was an incredibly meaningful adventure through and through.
Which one would you never return to?
Before I left I was shy and lacked confidence. I worked mostly by myself. I’m still an introvert, but now I have a global community of friends and amazing people.
That’s a good question. I do try to learn and appreciate something about every place I visit – but when I went to Eritrea, I was detained by armed guards and eventually deported from the country in the middle of the night on an Egypt Air flight back to Cairo. I’d prefer to avoid that in the future, if possible.
How did your experience shape the way you live and work?
What is next for you? I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to write and travel. I hope to continue in different ways for as long as I can.
What were your challenges along the way while travelling? So many . . . but let me say first that it was all worth it! The greatest challenge was arranging visas, airfare and all the different logistics. I also made a lot of mistakes along the way: a car accident in Italy, missing the only flight off the island in Kiribati, losing

For the past ten years I’ve been on a quest to visit every country in the world. All along the way, I kept hearing from other people who were also pursuing quests of many kinds. They weren’t all travel quests; some people wanted to change the world by protesting something that bothered them, others wanted to knit 10,000 hats, others wanted to see more birds than anyone else in the world, and others wanted to master a dozen foreign languages or become a computer scientist without going through formal training.
Please tell us about collecting the case studies for the book.
I’m not sure I have a single favourite, but a few favourites include: Macedonia, Lithuania, Ghana, Liberia, Hong Kong, Laos and Australia. I also enjoy the general process of travelling: going from place to place, getting on a plane, exploring a new culture. I enjoy the journey as well as the destination.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALICE! ‘I began dealing with your house with full confidence in it in every way – and that confidence is undiminished.’ Lewis Carroll writes to Alexander Macmillan in April 1871
Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has delighted generations of children since its first publication in 1865. His extraordinary characters – Alice, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter and company – have become entrenched in our culture, as fresh and engaging today as they were 150 years ago. Carroll’s chosen publisher was Macmillan, and the remarkable partnership that developed between author and publisher continued throughout his life. To mark Alice’s special anniversary in 2015, we are tumbling back down the Rabbit Hole, with an outstanding collection of publishing that celebrates Carroll’s masterpiece and Macmillan’s place at the heart of the Alice story.
