JESSIE BURTON city I love more than any other. The quality of light there is gorgeous; the winding canals, the preserved history of all its past centuries – it’s astounding. You can feel like you’ve travelled back in time.

How would you describe your writing process? You worked as an actress before you became a writer: has this affected the way that you tell stories?
What made you decide on Amsterdam as a setting for your book? Is there a part of the city that has had a particular impact on you creatively? Amsterdam was where the whole story started. I was in the Rijksmuseum when I saw the most astonishing, beautiful, enormous doll’s house from 1686, which cost the same as a real house to build and furnish and took nineteen years to complete. I was fascinated by who the female owner of this house was, what sort of world she lived in, and why she wanted a house so expensive that she couldn’t even live in it. There’s no particular part of the
My writing process is not remotely formalized. It can be chaos but then it can be a clear ride through five thousand words. Generally speaking, I can usually picture a scene in my head, as if it were a play. So my acting background definitely informs that. Hidden motivations, secrecies, the best kind of drama! In the first chapter of The Miniaturist for example, I could see this young woman newly arrived in Amsterdam, standing on the step of a house, peering round the door into the gloom . . . and this other woman waiting for her on the other side. At the same time, I keep lightly tethered in my head the overarching plot of the whole thing. What has to happen? That is the question I ask myself. I don’t always know. Often, the characters work that out for themselves, but I have
to do the legwork. Have you always been a fan of historical fiction? Have any authors influenced or inspired you? Oh definitely. Historical fiction is for me novelistic escapism in its purest form. The best of historical fiction offers you characters and settings that are beyond your reach and yet feel so real. As a girl, I was very influenced by a book called A Traveller in Time by Alison Uttley, set in Tudor England. I read it about twelve times. As an adult, Hilary Mantel’s Cromwell trilogy (well, two books so far) is my touchstone. It’s irreverent, orchestral, very funny, almost contemporary in its psychology yet always rooted in profound understanding and research of Cromwell’s time – it’s my drug.
social shifts of 1960s London, it’s a story about secrets, a woman who isn’t who she says she is, a hidden painting and one girl’s journey to understand what it might ever mean to call a place home.
What’s next? I’m currently researching and writing my second novel, provisionally entitled Belonging. Whilst the time frame of The Miniaturist is a tightly coiled spring of three months, this one spans 30 years and has at least twice as many characters as my little group in Amsterdam. Taking in the outbreak of civil war in southern Spain in 1936 and the
