MATH and science don’t belong in books for daycare owner Simin Badr — they’re in a vegetable garden. Behind the Altamont Child Development Centre on Marine Drive in West Vancouver, the tops of little heads can barely be seen above the rows of thick, green vegetables. As one girl reaches down and pulls up a bundle of carrots, Badr collects the pickings for lunch. Bundled in her hands are carrots, celery and green beans, while green tomatoes continue to ripen on the vine for later pickings. The children, ranging from infants to pre-school age, have been growing their own vegetables in the back yard since the beginning of summer, and now it’s time to enjoy the spoils. The vegetables are destined for the plates inside, and anything leftover they will get to take home. “They do everything,” said Badr, adding she uses the plants as a way to talk about math and science, with a lot of preparation going into the group before the seeds are put into the ground. “When I gave them seeds, I counted them and gave them to put them into the dirt. We count them one, two, three, four, five, and then we came back,” she said. As well, she said it helps the kids understand that food doesn’t just come from a grocery store, but that a lot of work actually goes into producing what ends up on their plate. They also experience their food in more ways, smelling the tomato plants as they water, she said. “It’s like when children ask parents about money, parents say when they don’t have money they go to the bank. They think when you go to the bank, they See Yoga page 21

Yoga practices incorporated into daily routine From page 20 give you money. It’s the same thing with vegetables, food and milk — you go to the grocery store and get it.” The daycare, designed with largely natural wood finishes indoors and with plenty more outdoor space, including a hockey area and playground, doesn’t look like many daycares did years ago, with bright colours and lots of sensory stimulation. Rather, it’s a more relaxing place, a oneacre plot of tranquility hidden from Marine Drive behind a wall and grassy area. They’ve now been open three and a half years, after undergoing renovations to make the house work as a daycare. Continuing that theme, the kids also try basic yoga practices and do exercises with exercise balls, which Badr uses to teach the kids about how their bodies work. It’s all part of an effort to incorporate healthy lifestyles in their routine from a very young age. Badr said when she was young she got exercise on her own, often playing ball hockey in the street or kicking around a soccer ball, but those types of games seem to have gone out of style with the invention of computers and handheld games. “Because of lots of health problems that we face today, healthy eating is very important to us,” said Badr. “Children need to do lots of exercise, as they grow up it becomes habit for them.” When they’re young, they might look a little confused when they first try the exercise ball, she said, but they quickly learn the fun side of exercising. The children will keep getting more vegetables sent home with them until the end of September when the harvest finishes, but it won’t be long until the next batch of seeds are going into the ground, and Badr hopes the lessons they learn now will last far beyond their next meal. Anyone interested in the daycare can reach Badr at 604-922-3435.

Sport council a voice for sport

Enjoy the benefit of sport

Sport organizations across Canada are realizing that our local communities are where it’s at. Most of the sport facilities in the country are municipal rinks, pools and playing fields and the majority of sport participants are between the ages of eight and 12. This makes a difference to sport governing bodies like Sport Canada and has led federal and provincial governments to fund initiatives to make local sport better.

Sport is one of the most popular activities, especially here on the North Shore. And for good reason. Research and the experience of countless children, youth, adults and seniors attest to the many benefits of competitive sport participation.

Since 2007 the provincial government, through 2010 Legacies Now, has funded support for local community sport councils. In some communities, this means helping to create a new network of local sport organizations. In others, like North Vancouver, it means helping the existing Sport Council

to link up with other communities to foster shared learning. “The North Vancouver Sport Council

“Our Sport Council works closely with local sport organizations, municipal and school staff.” was one of the first to be established in BC,” says North Vancouver Sport Council vice-chairman Mike Fox. “But what’s important is that more sport networks are emerging all over.”

What does an effective Sport Council do? “It’s a group that provides expert advice to local government, advocates for sport in a positive and unified way, and gives leadership to emerging and struggling sports,” says Fox. Fox points to a long track record of cooperation among community groups in North Vancouver. “Our Sport Council works closely with local sport organizations, municipal and school staff. Some sports have even agreed that the needs of another are higher and will make it a priority. This really helps planners and politicians in making tough funding decisions.” Leadership is another important area for growth in the Sport Council. Fox is encouraged by a new approach to sport programs called Canadian Sport for Life. “No one is excluded in the new model” says Fox. “It’s become the basis for municipal sport strategies across Canada, including Vancouver, Richmond and Port Coquitlam,” he adds. Resources for parents, athletes, and coaches can be found at www.canadiansportforlife.ca. All of the members of the Sport Council are volunteers, and many of them are heavily involved in running their own teams and leagues. “We can always use more hands,” says Fox. More information about the North Vancouver Sport Council is available at www.northvanrec.com.

Mike Fox, vice-chairman of North Vancouver Sport Council knows the importance of community sport.

The North Vancouver Recreation Commission’s Tom Walker agrees. “Physical activity is satisfying and fun, but skilled movement, well executed, can bring sheer joy.”

“Physical activity is satisfying and fun, but skilled movement, well executed, can bring sheer joy.” As the Commission’s Sport Development Coordinator, Tom knows this joy is not limited to the elite performer but can be experienced at every stage in sport development. “Watch the expression on a kid’s face who takes her first independent steps on the ice,” he says. “That is more significant than scoring the winning goal.” Sport and the experience of wins and losses can teach us a lot. “The discipline of sport can be challenging. No one wins all the time,” says Walker, stating the obvious, but adding “striving within the rules and falling short is an opportunity for reflection, learning,

ones who benefit. Coaches, officials and parents learn, too. “Sport is the largest volunteer sector in the country,” states Walker.

The True Sport Foundation is one of the founders of the Sports Day in Canada event on September 18th. True Sport commissioned a study that led to a 2008 report titled “What Sport Can Do.” The report indicated that “Canadians rank sport second only to family as a highly positive influence in the lives of young people”. The full report is available for free at www.truesport.ca.

Olympian Anna Rice, active in the international program Right to Play, was asked to be the “athlete voice” on the 18th. To Rice, “’global’ is just the sum of a whole bunch of ‘locals’, and ‘locals’ are just a bunch of ‘individuals’, so it’s all connected.” In other words, says Walker, “it takes a community to raise an athlete.”

But the players are not the only

THERE’S some telltale signs that separate an average piece of old silverware from something truly special, says appraiser Shawne MacIntyre, and she wants to help people spot them. The Start Your Own Collection course is one of the new general interest courses at Capilano University this year. It covers topics that don’t often come to mind when pondering university life, in this case, learning what to look for in antiques and artwork. It was the brainchild of MacIntyre, an art appraiser with MacIntyre Appraisals who often has people coming to her asking what they can do to get the eye for antiques. “Certainly with the Antiques Roadshow and Cash In The Attic and all those television shows,

there’s a greater awareness of art and antiques,” she said. That ranges from people who want to start a serious collection to those who just want to figure out how special their grandmother’s silverware collection really is. “We’re really starting at the basics: how to examine, how to inspect a piece,” she said. “The goal of this course is to bring some knowledge and bring some confidence to people who are going out there for the first time.” The one-day course gives people a starting place, but that’s not all that’s on offer. Lynne Moran, coordinator of continuing education, said not everyone is looking to hit the books again full time, and this offers an easier way to keep the mind active and pick up new hobbies, or enhance your businesses without eating up at your free time. New this year includes practical options like a business course for new Canadians

who want to learn about regulations in Canada, nonprofit governance and realestate, or you can escape with courses on traveling for cheap or stargazing. The stargazing course is run by Wanda La Claire, an astrophysicist who’s worked with the HR MacMillan Space Centre in Vancouver. “It’s one of those sciences, too, where you might be the person to spot something new,” said Moran. The Start Your Own Collection course runs Saturday, Oct. 23 from 9:30 to 3:30 and costs $99. A lot of the general interest courses are just one-day, Moran said, which is done so that people don’t have to make a huge commitment to try something out. She said she hopes people find something that really interests them and come back for longer courses. A full list of general interest courses is available on the website at capilanou.ca/ce.html.

BILINGUALISM is a unique part of Canada’s national identity and that’s reflected in the language programs offered at schools throughout the country. The most popular of these is French Immersion, available at various schools on the North Shore. Benefits to learning a second language are numerous, according to Robert Rothon, executive director of Canadian Parents for French, B.C. and Yukon branch, a non-profit organization that advocates for French programs for youth. “Learning another language . . . always profits the child. It enhances cognitive development. Children who speak more than one language generally do better academically than unilingual children,” says Rothon. “Speaking more than one language and learning more than one language really seems to help a child fire at all cylinders, intellectually speaking.” Early immersion starts in kindergarten with 100 per cent of classes being taught in French until Grade 3 in North Vancouver and Grade 4 in West Vancouver, after which English language arts is added to the curriculum. Late immersion starts in Grade 6 with all classes offered in French for that year and English reintroduced in Grade 7. The number of classes offered in French then tapers off in high school, making up 25 per cent of the schedule in the senior years. Once outside of the school system, having a background in French can open up more job opportunities for students, says Rothon. “(They) are citizens that are able to work in either official language community, that could work anywhere in Canada and not be at a disadvantage.”

Mandarin summer camp successful in WV provincial legislation.”

From page 27 As far as improvements for the program go, Rothon says Canadian Parents for French would like to see the need for waiting lists or lottery systems eliminated. “Demand generally outstrips capacity and that’s always an issue. . . . Basically what we would really like to see is guaranteed access to French immersion and we’d like to see it through

••• A newer movement that’s been floating around the North Shore for the past couple of years is the idea of having a Mandarin bilingual program in schools. Slightly different from immersion, the proposal is that 50 per cent of classes be taught in Mandarin and 50 per cent in English. Among those in support of the program is a group of more than 120 North Shore families who have formed an organization called Mandarin for B.C. schools. “The common theme amongst all of us is we see the future in terms of the criticality of China as a worldwide power and as a language in business, Mandarin is clearly going to be one of the predominant languages spoken in business,” says North Vancouver’s Linda Brown, spokeswoman for the group. “We talked and agreed that . . . this needs to be in the public school system if we want to make a go of it as something sustainable.” But with tightening budgets and school closures on the forefront right now, the idea may be on hold for a while, she adds. Nonetheless, the West Vancouver School District recently held two Mandarin and Fun summer camps to introduce children aged 5-11 to the language. “The kids are really getting a lot out of it they’re loving it and we’re hoping in the future we can continue something like that but as always it’s based on community need and our ability to provide space and classrooms,” says Jill Johnson, manager of community learning for the school district. Currently, the only space available for a Mandarin program is at Sentinel secondary, says Johnson. “At the elementary schools we’re full so because of that we haven’t been able to just yet get it started. But in the future if we can create the space, for sure we’ll provide the program without a doubt,” she says. “There’s a very strong community on the North Shore of parents that are interested in having Mandarin in their family as a main second language. . . . A lot of people are looking at it as the language of business for the future so many people are wanting to go that route for sure.” For more information about language programs visit the school districts’ websites at www.sd45.bc.ca. or www.nvsd44. bc.ca.

HAVING your children learn a second language can give them a leg up later in life.

Too cool for school KELLY Riccardi teaches Oscar Obst, 11, how to do the “baby freeze,” as part of her hip hop class offered through the North Vancouver Recreation Commission. Sessions run Mondays and Tuesdays after school with different classes scheduled for kids aged six to nine and nine to 12. Info: www.northvanrec.com.

Ease into heading back to school HEADING back to school can cause anxiety in many kids. Here are some tips from Alexandra Penn, founder of Champions Against Bullying, to make the transition as smooth as possible. ■ Prepare them for what to expect. ■ Take them to visit the class, meet the teacher, check out the facilities. ■ Tell them about a typical day’s agenda and remind them of all the things they liked when they visited the classroom. ■ Cheerful conversations help make their first days positive ones. ■ Shopping for new clothes or school supplies. ■ The day before, select their special outfit for their first day of school. ■ Pack their backpack with all their new supplies together.

■ Prepare lunch or a snack together the night before. ■ A special treat to celebrate their first day of school. ■ You can always take your child by the hand and introduce her to another child and parent(s). Compliment that child and ask if both of you can sit with them. Watch, see if your child is interested in the other child. ■ Let them know that you’ll be there to pick them up after school. ■ First days can influence their entire school experience. Do handle with care. Lots of hugs. A few caveats: Don’t: ■ Ask your child if it’s OK to leave. ■ Sneak out on them. ■ Take the child out of the room to say goodbye. It could be difficult to get him back in.
