CANADA DAY 2010 ››

Celebrate Canada Day on the North Shore (today called the Consitution Act, 1867), which united two British colonies and a province of the British Empire into a single country called Canada.

We have a lot to celebrate this Canada Day. This was the year that Canadians — and Vancouverites in particular — shed our humble image for brazen, flagwaving, anthem-singing patriotism. If there was ever a doubt that we love our country, the 2010 Olympics drowned it out in a clamour of chanting and cheering. Now it’s our birthday, and with it comes another chance to fly our red and whites.

Here on the North Shore, there is no shortage of ways to celebrate. From an intimate barbecue with friends to larger community celebrations and the North Shore Canada Day Parade up Lonsdale Avenue, the party is sure to go all day.

On Thursday we will celebrate 143 years since the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act

Read on, and consider your own reasons for celebrating Canada this July 1.

I was born in Poland and came to Canada when I was nine. When you grow up in a communist country you don’t have a lot of freedom to express yourself; here, we have a lot of individual freedom. I am very proud to be Canadian, and so happy that she is going to grow up here.

When I see problems around the world I feel very fortunate and proud to be Canadian. We have the freedom to think and travel, we’re respected around the world for our politics, and it’s a safe place to live.

For me, Canada means freedom. It means I can do what I want when I want to do it. We have the freedom to enjoy our spectacular country, the people and nature. To me, that’s breathing in freedom.

We have a lot to be proud of, and it was great to see so much national pride during the Olympics this year.

Meadoh was born in the U.S., but according to her owner she is thrilled to be a Canadian resident. Life doesn’t get any better than the dog park at Ambleside.

Our system isn’t perfect, but when you compare us to some countries we are fortunate to have a good social safety net, decent health care and reasonable public safety. It’s clean and very beautiful. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.
