CELEBRATEBC Day out in Britannia Beach Drake Fenton dfenton@nsnews.com

WHILE the temperatures may be below average on the North Shore, they will be soaring next weekend at the Britannia Mine Museum. From Aug. 6 to 7, the museum will host their ninth annual Copper and Fire Arts Festival. The festival will begin Saturday night with an evening concert performance by world musician Joseph “Pepe” Danza. Pepe is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist who mixes and mashes local music from multiple countries including Japan, India and Brazil. He will be accompanied by a group of fire dancers. On Sunday, local artists will showcase their art for the public. North Vancouver’s Mark Mentiply, a metal sculptor, will be at the festival and his uniquely sculpted animal forms will be on display. With polished steel and his blowtorch, Mentiply specializes in creating steel-crafted fish, specifically

selling his fish in a little restaurant in North Vancouver. Now, 15 years later, Mentiply still works in the film business and spends his free time perfecting his craft. His sculptures are notable for the way they appear in motion while remaining stationary. “I use a grinder to scrape the fish so that when you look at it, whether

it is in the sunlight or under halogen lights, you can see movements because of the way I polish it,” he said. “With the way I polish it you can really pick up little subtleties in the fish that make it seem like it has been swimming in water.” Along with displaying his wares at the Copper and Fire Arts Festival, Mentiply will also be giving a live demonstration. He plans on bringing his blowtorch and creating a salmon

from scratch. This will be his third time at the festival and he said that he is excited to be coming back. “It’s a fun event for the family. It’s great because my wife and my son will come up and there are a bunch of bands playing,” he said. “Hopefully the weather cooperates because it is a really nice day for the family.” Even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, Mentiply’s torch will do its best to compensate.

CELEBRATEBC Summer planning: use a visitor centre NEED help deciding what to do with your time off this summer? Try a visitor centre. B.C.’s community visitor centres aren’t just for out-oftowners. At the North Vancouver Visitor Centre, for example, staff can provide detailed advice on driving the Heritage Discovery Circle Route that passes through Vancouver and takes travellers on a seven- to 14-day cultural adventure through B.C.’s historic destinations and the communities of Hope, Prince George, Smithers, Port McNeill, Campbell River and Victoria. It’s one of nine circle routes featured in the province’s updated Circle Routes Scenic Driving Guide. More than ever British Columbians are choosing to stay close to home, taking

vacations right here in B.C. In 2009, residents were the single-largest group of travellers in the province, representing roughly 52 per cent of all travellers. Visitor centre staff can assist with province-wide trip planning. Each location is stocked with Tourism BC’s publications, including the Circle Routes Scenic Driving Guide, the Outdoor Adventure Guide and the BC Vacation Planner. B.C.’s 109 community visitor centres provide a wide range of trip-planning services, including visitor guides, activity suggestions, travel tips and accommodation reservations. The North Vancouver Visitor Centre is located at 124 West First Street. Two satellite locations are open daily during the summer at the Lonsdale Quay Market and at the corner of Capilano Road and Marine Drive.

MORE than ever, B.C. residents are choosing to stay close to home for their vacations, exploring their own province, city and community rather than travelling abroad.

Growing Chefs! Chefs for Children’s Urban Agriculture recently announced its second annual Going Local! Local Food Challenge from Aug. 14 to 20. Growing Chefs! is challenging people around the world to eat only local food for seven days and to track their progress on the Going Local website. Optionally, participants can collect pledges from friends and family to help raise money for the Classroom Gardening Program. Founded in 2005, the Classroom Gardening Program teaches students in Grades 1 to 3 to grow and cook their own food and gets them excited about eating healthy. In 2011, Growing Chefs! worked with six hundred youth and more than 100 chef volunteers in the Lower Mainland. “Going Local! is an opportunity for people to celebrate the amazing food grown and produced in their local region,” says Helen Stortini, executive director of Growing Chefs! “Last

year, one of our participants challenged himself to eat the 10 Mile Diet. Part of the fun is coming up with what local means to you. It’s amazing to see how innovative and creative people get.” Growing Chefs! is encouraging participants to define what local means to them, but are recommending the 100 Mile Diet. To encourage participation, the challenge also allows for one to two wild cards, such as coffee and tea, per day. Once participants register, they can share their experiences on the Growing Chefs! Going Local! website, as well as on their social media sites. “Eating local is a great way to eat. It supports the local economy, has great environmental benefits and the quality of food grown close to home is often fresher and tastier. It really opens up your eyes to what can be grown in your own community,” says Stortini. Growing Chefs also hopes to raise over $4,000 for their Classroom Gardening Program through the Going Local! challenge. For more information, visit www.chefs. givecentre.com or www. growingchefs.ca/going-local.
