Fish Tales: use caution with the catch of the day ANDREW FLEMING
The unexpected high numbers of sockeye returning the Fraser River this year has resulted in plenty of fish in the seasonal stands that have
“... remember that improper handling and preparing can cause food poisoning”
popped up besides local docks and roads. Unlike the more expensive cleaned fish found in supermarkets that most people are more familiar with, salmon fresh out of the water are often still “in the round” - meaning the heads and guts have yet to be removed - and
the Fraser Health Authority want to remind people that improperly handled salmon can be potentially dangerous. “Although salmon is a good source of nutrition, it is important to remember that improper handling and preparing can cause food poisoning,” a new posting on their website stated. “It is important to keep the fish cold during transportation and storage and to remove the guts as soon as possible.” They say the first thing to look for is fish that has been properly chilled. Ideally the fish has been taken directly from the water and plunged into a mixture of ice and water to cool the flesh and then put on ice. Sockeye should not be stored in just water and will stay fresh for two to three days when on ice. It’s a good idea to bring a cooler and ice to transport them home, and fish should be frozen if you don’t plan to cook it within a day after
purchase. The guts should be taken out beforehand. Another thing to look for is clear eyes and a healthy coating of slime, which protects from moisture loss and is great indicator of freshness. The flesh should bounce back right away if you poke it
with your finger, and rich red colour on the gills is also a good indicator. Due to the extremely low temperatures required to keep parasites away, health officials don’t recommend using salmon bought on the side of the road for making sushi.

Snacks on the fly HELEN PETERSON
Canadians say they are very concerned about nutrition. Well over half believe fat (including saturated) content in food is a serious health problem. However, according to some nutritional surveys, only 35 per cent say they are
doing all they can to eat a balanced diet. A great majority admit they eat between meals, but it’s not just fresh fruit and low-fat rice cakes. And while snacking is recommended by the Canada Food Guide (it keeps blood sugars level, reduces cravings
Going inside the vending machine and helps you concentrate), proper snacking “on the fly” is a real challenge. According to an insider who fills vending machines at workplaces throughout the Lower Mainland, the top-selling snack food on his route is potato chips. Locally,

Ms. Vickie’s sour cream and chili is hugely popular, and Hostess, Lays and Old Dutch flavours hold their own, too. The biggest sellers from vending machines are candy / chocolate bars: the Snickers bar, Mars bar, Reese’s peanut butter cups, and the age-old favourites Oh Henry and Kit Kat. Packed full of endorphinreleasing chocolate goodness, you’ll get hungry just reading about it. Most snackers feel a little guilty about picking highfat, high-calorie snacks, but guilt isn’t enough to change their eating habits. While many people complain that they want healthier snacks in vending machines, far fewer people end up actually putting their loonies where their mouth is! Our insider says one of the main reasons is that healthier snack foods in the vending machine cost more. While a regular item is usually priced at about $1.25 (but is going up by a quarter, shortly), some high-end power bars can
be $1.75 or even up to $2.25, which is a deterrent when you want a quick burst of energy but also a cheap snack. Vending machine fare has its place; it “tides you over” on a busy day, but should never be used to replace meals. Even though office workers,
salespeople on the road or factory workers often get cramped for time and want a quick fix, regular snacks should ideally consist of food brought from home (miniyogurts, raisins and nuts, etc.), or items purchased at a health-oriented kiosk or deli.

TREASURE AND TRASH IN THE VENDING MACHINE THE GOOD: • Clif Bars and other power bars, plus protein bars (Body Break) - nutritious but may contain a lot of calories (hence the “energy bar nickname). • ReBar, a really thick, chewy fruit leather; contains lots of good veggies and fruit, but is pricey. • Vel bars (Canadian made – all natural, full of seeds, nuts and dried fruit). • Granola bars – though some can be fatty and hydrogenated, especially the coated or crunchy variety. Read the ingredients and nutrition breakdown. • Regular peanuts or almonds (no hydrogenated coatings), but watch the sodium. • Hostess / Frito-Lay Sun Chips (lower in fat). • Rold Gold Pretzels (not great, but better than chips). • Minute Maid or Sun Rype orange, apple and grapefruit juice — preferable to soda pop, but does have calories from the sugar content.
THE BAD: • Regular sugary pop. Diet pops and vitamin waters containing aspartame or maltitol, a sugar alcohol used as a sugar substitute. • Five-Alive beverage - looks fruity, but is only 10 per cent real juice. • All chocolate bars and candy and most chips. Sorry!

For many people the problem of unwanted or excessive body hair can be a source of embarrassment and anguish. Janet Christie of North Vancouver’s Bodyside Laser Clinic understands the problem first hand. A registered nurse, Janet worked in her native South Africa for 2 decades. For 4 years she has worked in Canada and South Africa
operating 9 different skin care lasers and training doctors, nurses and technicians in their safe use. “Suffering from hirsutism (excessive body hair) myself, I developed empathy for people with excessive hair growth. I could see the positive and long-term results of my own laser treatments.” Today Janet is making her expertise available to
North Shore residents at the Bodyside Laser Clinic. Here she uses hygienic, effective Cynosure Laser treatment to safely help others. Hygienic, because the hand piece does not touch the skin making those hard to reach places accessable. Three treatments will radically reduce the amount of hair. Six to eight treatments will get rid of the hair completely. Hair on the face usually
takes more than eight treatments. For Janet, education is also in important part of the process. “To empower my clients so that they can make their own informed choices, I educate them about the Cynosure Laser during a complimentary consultation.” In the end, the most important result for Janet is hair-free and happy clients.

Whitening vs Veneers
Tissue Regeneration
Dr. George Ho and Dr. Roger Goncalves, General Dentists
The main cause of gum disease is bacteria that forms a sticky plaque that forms on your teeth.
These are two of the most popular treatments requested by our patients.
In health, gum tissue fits tightly around your teeth, and provides a barrier between the plaque and the supporting bone. When you have gum disease, this supporting tissue and bone is destroyed, and pockets develop. Eventually, too much bone may be lost, and the teeth need to be extracted.
Whitening is a process where specially formulated peroxide solutions are applied to the teeth over a period of time. The amount of time required varies depending on the amount of discoloration and the whitening system used. Generally one hour is required for in office treatments vs several weeks for take home systems. Both techniques are very effective in dealing with mildly discoloured teeth.
Regeneration literally means “to replace a lost or damaged part with new tissue that restores the original function”
More severely stained teeth may be better treated with veneers. This process involves covering the front surfaces of the teeth with a thin layer of porcelain. The veneers whiten the teeth and have the added advantage of being able to replace worn and chipped enamel surfaces as well as correcting mild misalignments. Veneers may require some reshaping of the teeth prior to their application. However, advances in technology now allow for the preparations to be minimal in many cases.
Your periodontist has recommended a regenerative procedure because some of the bone supporting your teeth has been destroyed. These procedures can reverse some of the damage by regenerating lost bone and tissue. During this procedure, the gum tissue is folded back, and the disease-causing bacteria is removed. Membranes (filters), bone grafts, tissuestimulating proteins, or growth factors, can be used to encourage your body’s natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue. Eliminating existing bacteria, and regenerating bone and tissue, helps to reduce pocket depth and repair damage caused by the progression of gum disease.
Our dentists will ensure you will be able to preview your new smile with techniques such as computer simulation, wax models of the intended result as well as trial veneers on your teeth to ensure you will truly get the results desired.
With a combination of daily oral hygiene and professional maintenance care, you’ll increase the chances of keeping your natural teeth and decrease the chances of serious health problems associated with periodontal disease.

Wisdom Teeth
Orthodontic Check-Up
The Right Time for an Orthodontic Check-Up: No Later Than Age 7.
The average adult has 32 teeth by age eighteen, however, the average mouth is made to hold only 28 teeth. It can be painful when 32 teeth try and fit in a mouth that holds 28 teeth. These four other teeth are your third molars, also known as “wisdom teeth”. I am often asked the question: “Why should I remove my wisdom teeth?”
Even though most people think of pre-teens and teens when they think of orthodontics, there are good reasons your child should get an orthodontic evaluation much sooner. Both Canadian and American Associations of Orthodontists recommend a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7.
Wisdom teeth are the last to erupt into the mouth. When they align properly, and gum tissue is healthy, they do not need to be removed. Unfortunately, this does not generally happen. The extraction of these teeth is deemed prudent when they are prevented from properly erupting within the mouth. Some grow sideways, only partially emerge through the gum, or even remain beneath the gum and the bone. These are known as impacted teeth.
Why Your Child Should Get an Orthodontic Check-up No Later Than Age 7: 1. Orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present. 2. While your child’s teeth may appear to be straight, there could be a problem that only an orthodontist can detect.
Poorly positioned, impacted teeth can cause many problems. With partially erupted teeth, the opening around the tooth allows bacteria to grow and can eventually cause an infection. The presence of wisdom teeth may lead to poor oral hygiene which can result in both dental decay and periodontal disease which may negatively affect not just the wisdom tooth itself but the adjacent tooth as well. Sometimes tumors or cysts form around an impacted wisdom tooth and can result in destruction of the jaw bone. Removal of the offending impacted tooth or teeth usually resolves these problems and early extraction is recommended to avoid future problems and to decrease surgical risk.
3. Early treatment may prevent more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. 4. In some cases, the orthodontist will be able to achieve results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing. 5. Early treatment may give your orthodontist the chance to: • guide jaw growth • improve the way lips meet • lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth • correct harmful oral habits • improve appearance • guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position
At Harbourside Oral & Facial Surgical Centre, extraction of wisdom teeth can be done in our clinic as an outpatient procedure and can be performed under various types of anaesthesia to make the procedure more comfortable. These procedures are provided in an environment of optimum safety, utilizing modern monitoring equipment and staff experienced in anaesthesia techniques.
Because patients differ in both physiological development and treatment needs, the orthodontist’s goal is to provide each patient with the most appropriate treatment at the most appropriate time.

Naturopathic Doctors Writing a New Script “If (NDs) are going to be prescribing, it is only going to be for emergency purposes”
ANDREW FLEMING
Many people suffering from health problems often only turn to naturopathic medicine as a last resort after traditional Western medicine has failed them. After a recent decision by the provincial Health Ministry, the proverbial shoe is on the other foot. For the first time in Canada, naturopathic doctors (NDs)— including those trained at New Westminster’s Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine—can also prescribe selected pharamaceutical drugs to their patients just like regular physicians do, if also only as a last resort. Boucher Institute spokesperson Margaret Dimailig said the
B.C. government’s decision to give naturopathic doctors the authority to write prescriptions for certain drugs came down last year.
it,” said Dimailig, a recent immigrant to Canada who has been “part of the family” at the Boucher Institute for the past three years.
The first batch of NDs that passed the pharmaceutical upgrade course required were granted prescriptions rights as of Sept. 7.
Naturopaths who have taken the upgrade course offered by the institute are now able to prescribe drugs such as antibiotics, painkillers and antidepressants. Within North America, only Washington, Oregon and Arizona also grant naturopathic doctors the right to write pharmaceutical prescriptions.
“If (NDs) are going to be prescribing, it is only going to be for emergency purposes and only selected drugs, definitely not all,” said Dimailig. “The major consensus is that it going to be on the bottom of the list.” Naturopathy is an alternative healing method that focuses on natural remedies and the body’s own ability to heal and maintain itself. Naturopathic medicine comprises many different holistic treatments of varying degrees of acceptance by the mainstream medical community. “It was really talked about, because they’re NDs and with the licence, there is a concern that they will be relying on
the Journal of the American Medical Association, also found the majority of hospital deaths were due to the inherent toxicity of the drugs, rather than mistakes in prescribing them.
Some might say it is ironic NDs would even want to rely on pharmaceuticals, seemingly the antithesis of their healing philosophy. In fact, one of the main reasons naturopathy is gaining in popularity is because people are looking
Treatments that stand the test of time
But when an antibiotic, for example, is a last resort for a patient, until now an ND would have to send patients to their family doctors or a walk-in clinic.

Across Canada, the partnership between the Canadian Cancer Society and law enforcement and emergency services personnel has raised more than $45.5 million since the fundraiser’s inception.
The Tour de Coast Cops for Cancer team trains for the two-week ride.
This year’s Tour de Coast — with riders from the Lower Mainland — kicked off Sept. 22. They will ride until Thursday, Sept. 30.
According to cancer statistics released by the Canadian Cancer Society in 2008, about 850 Canadian children develop cancer each year and 135 will not survive. Although there has been a dramatic decline in childhood cancer death rates since 1985, childhood cancer still affects about 130 children in B.C. each year. Since 1938, the Canadian Cancer Society has operated as a national charitable
organization providing valuable cancer information services, funding research and educating Canadians on cancer risks. In British Columbia and the Yukon, the Society works with approximately 20,000 volunteers in over 80 communities, and has funded more than $35-million in B.C.based research since 2000. • At present, the five-year relative survival rate for female breast cancer in Canada is 87 per cent (84 per cent for men) which means women diagnosed with breast cancer have an 87 per cent likelihood of being alive five years after their diagnosis.
• Approximately 10 per cent of breast cancer deaths will be women under age 50, 54 per cent will be women over age 70. About 36 per cent of breast cancer deaths will be women between ages 50 and 69. • In 2010, an estimated 50 men will die from breast cancer, unchanged from 2009.

TRENDS: • One in nine (11 per cent) Canadian women are expected to develop breast cancer during her lifetime (this means by age 90). • One in 28 Canadian women is expected to die from breast cancer. • Female breast cancer incidence rate increased slightly from 101.4 per 100,000 in 2009 to 101.7 per 100,000 in 2010. The rate appears to be fairly consistent across Canada. • There is more cause to be optimistic. Since 1999, the incidence of breast cancer in Canada has stabilized. Female breast cancer mortality rate decreased from 21.8 per 100,000 in 2009 to 21.4 per 100,000 in 2010. (Note: In 1986, the breast cancer mortality rate was 32 per 100,000. This rate has fallen by more than 30 per cent and is currently the lowest it has been since 1950. The significant improvement since the mid-1980s is likely a result of improvements in screening and

•an estimated 23,200 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,300 will die of it. •an estimated 180 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 50 will die of it. •on average, 445 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer every week. •On average, 100 Canadian women will die of breast cancer every week. In B.C. there will be an estimated 2800 new cases in 2010 and an estimate 640 deaths.
“The good news is breast cancer death rates have declined in every age group since at least the mid 1980s,” says Barbara Kaminsky, ceo, Canadian Cancer Society B.C. and Yukon.“Many women are alive and well today because their breast cancer was detected and treated early.”
The Canadian Cancer Society recommends that women over the age of 50 have a mammogram every two years. Women over 40 should have a clinical breast examination by a trained health professional at least every 2 years. And if you are a woman over the age of 70, talk to your doctor about which screening program is appropriate for you.

“There are risk reduction strategies that may lessen the chance of developing breast cancer,” says Kaminsky.“These include eating a healthy diet, being physically active, maintaining a healthy body weight, limiting your alcohol consumption, avoiding tobacco, and not using hormone replacement therapy.” Research shows that regular physical activity can help protect against breast cancer. Physical activity can be a collection of normal daily activities-climb stairs instead of taking the elevator, walk instead of drive, play with children instead of watching television. Canada’s Physical Activity Guide recommends that adults add physical activity into their daily life by including 60 minutes of light to moderate physical activity every day. As you progress to more vigorous activities, you can reduce the time you spend to 30 minutes, 4 times a week. continued on next page

Just 57 per cent of men, compared to 74 per cent of women, had had a routine medical checkup within the past 12 months, according to a report by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
“For men, routine testing is quite foreign.”
“That doesn’t surprise me,” general practitioner Chris Pengilly says, estimating women comprise 60 per cent of his appointments. GP and author Dave Hepburn says female patients outnumber men among his 20- to 50-year-olds.

Women are used to coming for such tests as pap smears and mammograms. For men, routine testing is “quite foreign,” Hepburn says. Yet regular testing for prostate cancer, diabetes and colon cancer gives their doctors a baseline to note any changes.
“They are not places of good news. The only news you get there is bad news. So why go in the first place?” he suspects is the rationalization.

Men are more likely to embrace stoicism than women, according to Hepburn.

Mind Power Take control of your subconscious mind and change your life. The conscious mind, which controls as little as 5 percent of our brain, is the center of logic and analysis. It thinks, reasons, calculates, directs your actions, analyzes results, and makes decisions. It registers pain, fear, and happiness. It sets short-term and longterm goals. However, in order for the conscious mind to function effectively, it needs a place to pull information from - an information bank. That information bank is your subconscious mind. Research has shown that our subconscious mind controls as much as 95 percent of our brain. It takes in everything you learn and experience throughout your life. The subconscious mind does not discriminate. It accepts anything and everything that is put into it - good and bad, positive and negative. Hypnosis is a highly effective scientific method, which allows the conscious mind to search and “correct” the data bank of our subconscious mind. It is during hypnosis that the subconscious can easily be accessed and programmed for success with health, relationships, career, finances, or any aspect of life.
“Hypnosis is a highly effective scientific method” Your health, wealth, success and happiness (or lack thereof) are not only affected by your
subconscious beliefs; you are also positively or negatively influenced by cellular memory, which is stored everywhere in your body. Recent advances in cellular science have shown that the cells within our body have memory and that certain emotions and experiences can cause the body to change chemically, creating health issues. All systems of the body, including the immune system, function better when cellular imbalances are cleared. Suggestions can be given to the subconscious mind to promote healing. Hypnosis is a highly effective and scientific method that can bring about rapid change, especially when combined with other forms of treatment, and when facilitated by a trained and experienced therapist. It has been a very effective adjunct treatment for cancer, pain management, weight loss, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, grief, self-esteem issues, relationship building, career enhancement, and much more.

“...the optimal time to exercise is when body temperature is at its highest, which, for most people is 4 to 5 p.m.” hectic and trying to squeeze a workout in is impossible. Research actually shows there are benefits to working out at any time of day. Make use of your lunch break — make a speedy gym visit, go for a jog or take a brisk walk. Even better, hit the gym before heading home. Studies show the optimal time to exercise is when body temperature is at its highest, which, for most people is 4 to 5 p.m.; strength and endurance are greater in the afternoon and injuries are the least likely. Even if you can’t make it to the gym or a yoga class until after dinner, don’t fret. One recent study showed that exercise even half an hour before bedtime did not affect sleep. 3. KEEP IT SHORT AND INTENSE. In March, new research from scientists at McMaster University showed that short
term high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a timeefficient but safe alternative to traditional types of exercise. HIIT means doing a number of short bursts of intense exercise with short recovery breaks in between. The authors showed it produces the same physical benefits as conventional long duration endurance training despite taking much less time. Any type of cardio exercise can be used for an HIIT workout including running, swimming, walking, or the use of cardio equipment such as a treadmill. 4. EXERCISE WITHOUT EXERCISING AT ALL. Hate the gym? Loathe running? You can still get your workout in by doing things you like or would do anyway. Household and garden chores, brisk walking, ballroom dancing, cycling and playing with your children or grandchildren still count as vigorous activity. Do a little every day and you can skip the stuff you hate.
Don’t get sidelined by a shoulder injury Dear Yogini: I have done yoga on and off over the years, but am presently not practising due to a shoulder injury. Are there some stretches that I can do? Would I still be able to attend classes?” DL Dear DL: this is a common question, and a good one. Many times people discontinue exercise due to an injury, when there are still possibilities for fitness that could actually enhance the healing process. I can’t suggest specific stretches for your shoulder since the details of your injury are unclear. Having said that, if your injury occurred six weeks ago or more, then some gentle,
mindful stretching would probably be good for it (and the rest of your body as well). Motion is lotion, I always say! Prior to a yoga class, please remember to inform your teacher of any injuries, surgeries or significant changes in the body. Downward facing dog pose is typically not recommended for people experiencing shoulder issues. In some yoga classes, downward dog can be a repetitive posture, but there are a few modifications that can be made if the class goes into this posture. Simply letting the knees rest on the ground and controlling the amount of pressure on the shoulder and chest is a good alternative, as
In yoga, we recommend listening to your body and making each practice your own. Since one of the goals of yoga is to build the mind-body connection, practising with an injury and moving into an easier variation when necessary is an opportunity for mental and emotional healing. It is not
