Whether violins, pianos or guitars sound like fun, parents can take notes about the classes most suitable for their kids by talking to the school’s teachers. Guitar programs offered at the school. Nadine Bohna, the program coordinator at the school, has been teaching the Kodaly Orff music program for more than 30 years. “It not only brings joy, but it helps us appreciate listening to music and participating in music for the rest of our lives. It is also such a social activity, that it really helps young children when they are learning everything from the basics of taking turns to working together cooperatively,” said Bohna. The Kodaly Orff program is for anyone under seven, said Bohna; including babies under two. She said the interactive program uses xylophones, dance, movement and singing.

Students learn music literacy

the place to camp

From page 18 Through musical games the children learn music literacy. Kodaly Orff is the school’s most popular program, she added, and is available at the West Vancouver Community Centre and St. Catherine’s Anglican Church in Edgemont Village, as well as at the university. CapPiano is for ages six and over. In groups children learn basic piano skills and music theory. Bohna said students learn through group games, making the program an interactive experience as opposed to solitary experience with private lessons. “Private lessons are wonderful at a later age. . . . But I think that the thing that we offer, which isn’t offered everywhere, is that group format and I think it’s a very healthy thing for children and a fun thing for children as well,” she said. The Suzuki Strings program also follows a group format and it is for children aged four to eight. She said it’s a parent-child program because students are encouraged to learn music the same way they learn their mother tongue; by listening and imitating.

STUDENTS aged seven and under learn to play the xylophones, dance, and sing at Capilano University Music School’s Kodaly Orff program. Bohna said there is also the Group Guitar program for children aged seven to nine. In Group Guitar, students are introduced to classical and folk methods while learning the correct posture and technique. Parents are encouraged to be involved with this program and bring their own guitar to learn along with their children.

Girls soccer camps great for all levels Jeremy Shepherd jshepherd@nsnews.com

THE North Shore Girls Soccer Club is preparing to run a full slate of girls’ soccer camps this summer, beginning July 4. Girls as young as four can take to the airconditioned, indoor soccer bubble below Windsor secondary to try their feet at the beautiful game. The club is offering a wide range of camps, including some for children who just want to chase the ball around for two hours and some for competitive teen players looking to spend the day sharpening their game. Head coach Alistair Browne is planning to walk the sidelines during the camps, and said one of the key goals is to make sure everyone, even the players looking to improve their conditioning during the August heat, has a good time. “We still try and make them enjoyable,” Browne said of the high-performance camps. “I find the best players or the best athletes have a bit of fun, it doesn’t have to be serious.” According to Browne, there are camps for all skill levels. “The misconception is that we’re not catering to the elite players, which is disappointing.” The coach said there are ways to reach each child, despite any shyness or special needs.

“They need to be focused and you’ve got to help them get focused and work out ways to connect, and that’s coaching,” he said. The week-long camps offered this summer include goaltending clinics, a soccer boot camp, injury-prevention training and a combination soccer/swimming camp for girls eight to 14. The soccer-swimming camps entail a morning of shooting, dribbling and juggling at the indoor soccer bubble and an afternoon of splashing and swimming at the pool at the Ron Andrews Centre. Browne said a day at camp might start with a game of soccer tag, followed by individual drills with a focus on learning to work as a team. Throughout the day kids are praised for their work and their effort. “All they want is a little bit of recognition,” Browne said. “I try to treat the kids as individuals.” Part of respecting the personalities on the field is allowing the girls to create their own drills. “We give them a bunch of cones, a bunch of balls, and some hurdles and say, ‘look, build that,’” Browne said. While Browne is the head coach, he said he’s doing his best to train 40 female mentoring coaches to help with the camps. The mentors are soccer players between 16 and 22, and Browne finds young campers often See Campers page 21

Campers connect with mentors From page 20 look up to them. “The girls really connect big time, because they’re real role models for them,” he said. Browne said the success of the camps can often be measured by the absence of parents on the sidelines. “If we’re doing a good job, we don’t hardly see any parents there. By the Wednesday, there might be one or two parents, but most of them leave us because they see their kids are happy.” Browne was named head coach of the North Shore Girls Soccer Club in 2010, and said the club is still evolving. He asked parents and players to let him know of ways to improve the camps. “Give us your feedback, let us know what you like. . . ‘Cause if they don’t like it, we really want to know.” Part of the reason kids enjoy the camps so much is due to the pure fun of soccer, according to Browne. “Soccer is a team sport, and it’s a simple sport, it’s the world sport, and it doesn’t cost money,” he said. “You don’t need fancy equipment, you just need something to kick around.”

SUMMER COOKING CAMPS AT THE HUNGRY OVEN !

Jeremy Shepherd jshepherd@nsnews.com

THE Greek myths that forged constellations in the night sky and the sounds of a scintillating jazz saxophone are among the many inspirations for this summer’s art camps at the Silk Purse Arts Centre. The camp features eight one-week courses over the summer, each focusing on different artistic forms, techniques and references. “Children’s art is marvelous, it’s uninhibited and often it’s very free,” said Glenn Madsen, the cultural program coordinator for the District of West Vancouver. The camps, which are open to children aged five to 11, aim to integrate the young artists into the picturesque environment. “It’s so rich with visual imagery here,” Madsen said. “We’ll have them go and paint or draw in a community

garden.” While there is indoor space, Madsen said many of the classes take place on a beach or next door at John Lawson Park. Madsen said it’s ideal for children to create art in vibrant surroundings, such as overlooking English Bay. Wind and Waves, one of this summer’s camps, is designed to hone a child’s power of observation and help them capture the fine details of the ocean on canvas. “We’re trying to strike the right balance between a fine arts program and just having fun in the sun,” Madsen said. The art campers run the gamut, with some parents looking for a summer academy for a gifted youngster while other parents just want a nice place for their child while they go to work. Many of the classes are taught by Jessie Forman, who’s worked at the camps for three years and recently earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of B.C. See Works page 23

Works presented in a gallery show From page 22 “What I like most is the balance we keep,” Forman said. Forman said the camp uses the studio, the park and other sites in the area to create a harmonious experience for the children. Asked about surprises, Forman said she never tires of seeing the kids create something unexpected. “That’s probably the best part of my job,” she said. Energy, adaptability, and a fair amount of coffee are the keys to being a good teacher, she said. Each camp focuses on different works ranging from prehistoric art etched on cave walls to the fantastic shapes and content of surrealists like Salvador Dali. “I try to infuse new references,” Forman said. After five days of sketching, drawing, painting and working on crafts, the children present their work to parents in a gallery showing on Friday afternoon. “It’s amazing to see how proud they are at the end of the week,” Forman said. According to Madsen, the younger children tend to learn through play, but older artists at the camp receive some academic instruction. He also said crafts are often an underrated aspect of the camps. “If they’re doing something that looks like a craft, some people feel it’s not very adventurous,” he said, explaining that each craft is rich in terms of fine art references and artistic process. Madsen said he was so impressed by one child’s art he still has a heart with arms, legs and a mouth made of tissue paper in his

Sailing trips offer educational adventures Manisha Krishnan mkrishnan@nsnews.com

MOST students enjoy a good field trip, but a five-day sailing excursion? That’s in a completely different league. Bluewater Adventures, a North Vancouver-based ecotourism company, offers school trips that teach students all about the flora and fauna around B.C.’s Gulf Islands. The journey starts at Port Sidney on Vancouver Island and routes south of Galiano Island. While there’s no set itinerary, there is always plenty to see, says naturalist and crewmember Natalie Bowes.

“We look at the intertidal life, so all of the wonderful sea stars, invertebrates, crabs and whatever we can find on the beaches, she says. “If we’re cruising on the boat we’re looking at all the sea birds and marine mammals like whales and porpoises and seals and sea lions. Day trips onto the islands often include hiking and a lesson in forest ecology, adds Bowes, who has a background in biology and is a grad student in environmental education and communication. The kids also learn a lot of about being part of a sailing crew. They’re taught how to navigate and plot a course, and are even allowed to steer the ship. Because of the re-

sponsibilities involved, most of the kids are at least high school age. “I mean, we’ve got them doing everything, they’re pulling up the anchors, they’re raising the sails, they’re driving the boat and so they need to have that sort of mature attitude, says Bowes. “It’s quite cool to see them get out there and get their hands right into it. It’s also nice to see them bonding and leaving the cliques and social pressures of school behind, she adds. Cruises take place in the spring and fall and can accommodate 15-18 kids plus two chaperones. For more information call 1-888-877-1770 or email schools@bluewateradventures.ca.
