Get animated at Delbrook this winter Caitlin Dowling cdowling@nsnews.com
THE holidays are a great time for relaxing with the family and watching a movie. More often than not, kids films old and new are animated features. Everything from the Disney classics and Dr. Seuss’s Grinch to newer films such as Bolt, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and the Shrek series are made using animation technology. If your kids got inspired by some of the holiday features and created their own flip books or comic strip characters over Christmas, they will be excited to learn about the Cartooning and Animation course at the Delbrook Community Centre in January. The course takes drawings to the next level, adding sequences and creating digital films. “Kids are very excited when suddenly their cartoons start to talk” says course instructor Nadia Dimitrow. Dimitrow is Bulgarian-born, and has been teaching for 10 years. She has a Masters degree in Journalism, and a broad history in filmmaking and awardwinning animation. She and her daughter Theolina teach hundreds of students a year in several forms of filmmaking and animation all over the Lower Mainland. Dimitrow’s Cartooning course couples drawing and designing characters with the technological advances needed to bring them to life. Throughout the eight-week

CHILDREN can take their drawing to the next level at a Cartooning and Animation course offered at Delbrook Community Centre in January. program, students learn Walt Disney’s style of hand drawing sequences, how to voice-overs and sound effects to their work and how to do a basic edit of their own film. The finishing touches are added in the studio to give a professional edge to the final work. “The big satisfaction, you know, (is) just to see how proud the little guys are, and the parents are,” says Dimitrow. “This
is what I’m dedicated to.” The course, which starts on Tuesday, Jan. 11, is for kids aged eight to 12 who are inspired by Disney and Pixar productions and are interested in learning the techniques. Classes are from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. and cost $103 for the full course, which includes all materials. For more information or to register, call 604 983 6388 or visit www.northvanrec.com.

Hockey programs for all ages Manisha Krishnan mkrishnan@nsnews.com
SO your kid just informed you that he — or she — plans to be the next Henrik Sedin. Awesome.
The only problem is they’re not going to get there just by watching Hockey Night in Canada. Luckily, here on the North Shore there are a few great options for kids who want to step up their game. Canlan Ice Sports is North Vancouver’s largest recreation ice facility, with three NHLsized ice surfaces. The centre has a Youth Skating, Shooting and Scoring camp running Jan. 2-Feb 6 for nine to 12 year olds and Feb.13-March 13 for five to eight year olds. The program is designed to further develop a player’s skill set and improve their scoring ability. Shooting and scoring are the main focus, but skating, passing, receiving and conditioning are also covered. Once they’ve got the basics down, the Youth Hockey League might be the next step. The five on five league, played across North America, is a fun way to compete without having to deal with an overwhelming schedule.
There are six divisions for kids aged seven to 19. The season runs March 26-June 26 and will include an evaluation plus 10 games. Player apparel and online statistics are provided. To register call Sean Watkins at 604-924-0828 ext. 2120 or email swatkins@icesports.com. The cost is $220 for individuals or $3,225 for a team of up to 15 players plus one goalie. For more information go to www. iceports.com/northshore. Hollyburn Country Club also offers a couple of hockey programs for tots and teens. Hollyburn Hockey School goes over the fundamentals of the game, including power skating, puck control, shooting, passing, pass reception, individual tactics, team tactics and scrimmages. Camps are offered for all hockey players from the ages of four to 17 years old. Cookie Monsters, for kids aged four to five, is a fun way to introduce kids to hockey with skill training and adapted games. For further program and/ or registration information, feel free to contact either Jack Cummings or Ben Mackay at 604-913-4523 or via email at hockey@hollyburn.org. Programs are available to members only.

DANCE classes have been sweeping the nation as a great way to exercise, have fun and get social.

STUDENTS of the Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts do their high-energy Bollywood Jazz dance numbers.
You can find hip-hop, ballroom, and even salsa classes in most neighbourhoods. And now the dance craze is going even more global. From Jan. 5, kids ages 5-12 can enjoy something new on the North Shore – Bollywood Jazz. Bollywood is the informal term popularly used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, India; the largest film producer in India and one of the largest centers of film production in the world. Bollywood films are mostly musicals, and are expected to contain catchy music in the form of songand-dance numbers woven into the script. “The best thing about Bollywood is it’s very high energy,” says Suragini Ravindran, an instructor for
the course. “It just makes you want to move!” Ravindran is an instructor for the Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts (SDIPA), a global company founded by one of India’s biggest Bollywood stars, offering dance classes all over Canada. She has been teaching kids and adults alike for over 13 years, and is bringing a course to the Mickey McDougall Recreation Centre in the New Year. Bollywood Jazz combines classical and contemporary Indian music and dance with modern techniques, such as hip-hop. Ravindran says that Bollywood is the perfect outlet for children with its bold music and easy to follow dances, helping kids learn to focus and spend their pentup energy. By the end of the 10-week course, kids will have learned a full dance routine to show off their new skills. For Ravindran, Bollywood Jazz is much more than a way to keep your kids active and entertained. The class is a way to integrate and introduce new
cultures to as many people as possible. As well as the classes at the McDougall centre, the SDIPA is proud to have founded the not-for-profit Victory Arts Foundation, which teaches dance to special needs members of the North Shore ConneXions Society. Ravindran says the Shiamak Davar Institute aims to introduce dance to everyone out there who is keen to try it, regardless of ability or impairment. Davar’s motto for his institute is “Have feet, will dance” and Ravindran says “That’s what we live by and believe in every day of our life.” Classes are offered at the Mickey McDougall Recreation Centre, and cost $75.10 for 10 classes. Classes take place every Wednesday, from Jan. 5 onwards. For five to seven year olds, classes run from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. For eight to 12 year olds, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. For more information or to register call 604-983-6388 or visit www.northvanrec.com.
