During the 3 to 5 hours I do sleep, the sleep is heavy. I close my eyes and then I open them as if I haven’t slept at all. The dreams I care about. The dreams I’m willing to sacrifice for. And the reward is complete satisfaction. Hard work, certainly; I’ve never worked so hard in all my life. With a name like Ryan “Bogie” Bourgard, it’s no surprise this executive chef feeds his creative monster. And, as if to prove it, Chef Bogie has chosen this recipe for you from his menu of 15 inventively original handroll recipes.

THAI PEANUT SAUCE » 1 tsp minced garlic » 2 cups peanut butter » ¼ cup sesame oil » 1 tsp fish sauce (optional) » ½ can coconut cream » ¼ cup brown sugar » 1 cup water » 2 tsp sambal » Blend all ingredients in blender and put in a squeeze bottle.

Place the seaweed (nori) on the palm of your hand (shiny side down) and put a thin layer of rice on left third of nori. Place fillings (squeeze thai peanut sauce over shrimp/crab and slaw) vertically in the middle of the rice. Fold the bottom left corner of nori over and begin rolling with your hands in to a cone shape. Once a cone is formed, place a piece of rice at the bottom right corner to use as glue and close tightly.

SUSHI NACHOS » 4 oz tuna » 1/2 avocado » 1 oz jalapeno » 1 oz tomato » 1 oz cucumber » 1 tbsp green onions » 1 tbsp soy sauce » 1 tsp rice vinegar » Squeeze of lemon » ½ tsp sesame oil » ½ tsp sriracha » 3 sheets of nori (cut into chip shape) » ½ tsp chili powder (Japanese) » ½ tsp sesame seeds

Dice up your tuna into sizable chunks. Then dice up avocado and all veggies into desired size. Put veggies and tuna into mixing bowl (you can add avocado at the end to make prettier dish). Add wet ingredients into bowl. Mix and let sit. Cut nori into chip like shapes (don’t cut too small). Deep fry nori chips using a tempura batter. Lightly salt and set aside on paper towel. Add the rest of the ingredients to the mixing bowl and toss well. Less than 20 minutes from the freeway, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re already standing at the trailhead, surrounded by a hilly forest on one side and the lake on the other, and pictures of the trail and stream are already in your mind.

ush green plant life has overtaken imuch of the area. Flowers are in their spring prime about a month ahead of schedule. Even the trees have fully awoken from their winter slumber to welcome you with their majestic presence. About the only thing missing is the sun, which promises to make its presence known soon, as it’s hiding behind a light cloud cover. You start up the trail and instantly hear water rushing up ahead and birds chattering amongst themselves. Before long, you see the stream, and as you start tracking alongside, the soft breeze brings a light mist to your face. A few minutes are all it takes to unwind and peel off the layers of tension you’ve carried for far too long. Conversation flows freely and listening is easy. Even a discussion about the week’s struggles brings a certain comfort. The trail itself is narrow and cluttered with tree roots, making it nearly impossible to avoid an occasional stumble. The crunching of twigs underfoot and the rustling of leaves nearby put you in an almost meditative state. You forge ahead, looking up as much as possible without risking an accidental plunge into the shallow water. At that very thought, your inner child speaks to you, and the closer you get to the stream, the more tempted you are to jump in the water. You resist your urge to do it, but being just a few feet from the water’s edge keeps the idea in your mind as you walk by. As you gaze at the water, you see a flat stone poking out in the middle of the stream and try to gauge whether you can jump to it…. Perhaps just a short side trip.

Soon, the path veers upward. You lose sight of the stream and can barely hear it flowing in the distance. While you miss the sound, you appreciate the peace and quiet. The trail is less crowded by roots and other obstacles the higher you climb, allowing you to peel your eyes from the ground more often and get a better look at your surroundings. At the peak, there are just enough trees to obscure your view out into the distance, but sometimes seeing what is immediately in front of you is just as significant. Any fatigue brought on by your climb to the top is more than offset by everything else you’re feeling. You reflect on the day’s journey and allow your mind to wander. You think about all of the good and bad of the past week, the past month, the past year. High up in the hills, where the world feels so open and so perfect, you feel free to think about life’s imperfections: strained relationships, trouble with family, the struggles of a close friend, and even your own demons. Rather than overwhelming you, even the most painful thoughts are met with some level of clarity.

Before you start down the hill, you pause to inhale the fresh air, grateful you are here. On the trip down the hill, it isn’t long before you hear the stream again and soon you’re right next to it. blinding, having finally made its promised appearance, causing sweat to form on your forehead. The birds have now been joined by a chorus of insects, and even the squirrels, in apparent flight from tree to tree, seem to have multiplied since you started out. All forms of animal life are scurrying in all directions, all of them on one mission or another. Watching all of these creatures taking care of their daily business reminds you how often you forget to step back and appreciate the small, everyday things in life. You follow along the stream a little further, eventually crossing

over toward where the trail ends. Other cars are in the parking lot. Other people are just getting their adventure started. Turning around, you look back and breathe in the fresh air once more, as if to take it with you. And you determine you’ll not wait this long again. It’s too easy to watch life go by and wonder where it went without doing anything about it. And it goes faster with each passing year. Life is full of adventures; many of them well within your reach if you’re willing to take the time to get lost for a while. N

Hells Canyon A TRIP BACK IN TIME T

Ihe twin 350 Chevy engines purr as the 30-foot jet boat eases out of the harbor at Hells Gate State Park in Lewiston and into the broad main channel of the Snake River. As Captain Nate Luther, of Snake River Adventures, throttles up against the stiff current, we can feel the power that will take us 80 miles upriver into the deepest gorge in North America and, hopefully, back again. It’s late July, and although the Snake is not running at its peak, it is far from tame. In fact, Nate tells us, this is the lowest the river has been in 11 years, which means rocks and boulders normally well under water have now become hazards. Worried looks exchanged by the dozen or

more passengers are soon forgotten as Nate launches into the first of a nearly endless string of stories about this magical, and somewhat mystical, place known as Hells Canyon. “The columnar basalt formations that make up the canyon walls are the result of lava flows that occurred as far back as 15 million years ago,” he says. “Many of the holes created by the rapid cooling are now home to cliff swallows.”

This is truly a place touched by history.

A few miles further on, Nate pulls up next to a rock outcropping to show off some of the better preserved petroglyphs that are testament to the Native Americans who lived in and around the canyon. These particular drawings are around 2,000 years old. Around mid-morning we dock at Cache Creek Ranch, once owned by a millionaire who flew into its tiny airstrip to hunt bighorn sheep and turkey, both of which are plentiful in these parts. Several mule deer linger like pets, hoping to share our snacks. The rustic ranch house contains a visitor center with photos and artifacts from early settlers. We plunge deeper into the canyon enjoying the eclectic collection of

summer cabins that dot the wider sections of shoreline. Flocks of turkeys scurry up the riverbanks as we roar past, and a black bear snorts at us for disturbing his bath. A young mule deer swims determinedly across the channel as a coyote watches from shore, no doubt disappointed at the loss of a meal. We pass the confluence where the Salmon River and the canyon narrows, its sheer walls closing in, making our boat seem like a cork bobbing in a turbulent ocean. The swifter current creates more rugged rapids, but Nate navigates them flawlessly. An occasional dousing only adds to our fun. He points out an iron ring driven into

a giant boulder that was used as a cable anchor to haul paddle boats up through the dangerous rapids in the late 1800s. “In 1903, the Imnaha got the cable wrapped around its paddle wheel,” says Nate. “The boat got sideways, rolled over and broke in half. Everyone made it off before it went down, but the load of equipment they lost caused every mining operation in the canyon to shut down.” We pause at the spot where Chief Joseph led his entire Nez Perce tribe across the river in 1877, in what would be the beginning of a legendary running battle with a U.S. Army bent on sending them to a reservation.

Chinese miners massacred in 1887 by a bunch of horse thieves who heard they had gold buried there. “They just showed up one morning and killed them all,” Nate tells his rapt audience, “then loaded them in their boats and shoved them out into the river. A couple of weeks later some of the bodies started floating into Lewiston, so they sent the sheriff up to investigate. Eventually all the cowboys were caught, but anti-Chinese sentiments being what they were at the time, they all got off with a slap on the wrist. No gold was ever found.”

Lunch at Kirkwood Ranch, a few miles below Hell’s Canyon dam, gives us a glimpse into the early life of an Idaho icon. Before he became a U.S. Senator, Len Jordan raised his family in this remote canyon oasis. An excellent bunkhouse museum gives us a pretty good idea of what life was like here in the 1930s.

Several miles further downstream, our crew is dropped off at Garden Creek Ranch where we’ll spend the night. The 100-year-old ranch was originally owned by Chinese gardeners who grew and sold produce to settlers in the 1920s. In the 1980s, the Nature Conservancy bought 1,500 acres next to the river, including the house and barn, in part to preserve the rare mariposa lilies that grow there.

Heading back downriver, Nate stops at Sheep Creek to show us a plaque commemorating a group of

from the river through an extensive orchard that includes apples, pears, plums, cherries, apricots and Italian prunes. A herd of mule deer have made the ranch home, as have a large flock of wild turkeys, but they don’t pay us much mind. Glo cooks up a sumptuous dinner. And after a beer or two, we’re all ready for some shuteye. The next morning we hike up Garden Creek to inspect the settling pond built to create a steady flow to drive the 17-inch Pelten Wheel hydro-electric pump

that supplies enough electricity to run the entire operation. We still have time for a swim in the cool, clear waters of the Snake before Nate returns to pick us up for the ride downriver to Lewiston. It’s a tired but happy crew that disembarks back at the Hells Gate launch site. Nate’s expert piloting has avoided any mishaps, and his excellent stories will leave us all with wonderful memories of Hell’s Canyon and our Snake River adventure. N

recently watched the movie The Martian in which the main character (spoiler alert!) grows potatoes on Mars using lamps, dirt composted with human waste and water made from a chemical reaction. Fortunately, there appear to be no aphids, grasshoppers or slugs on the red planet. Here on Earth, we are not so auspicious.

>> Staying Healthy With the plenitude and variety of chemical pesticides on the market, they may seem like the easiest way out of a bug pandemic in your garden. However, you can grow a healthy, robust garden filled with luscious produce without chemicals and without pests. The first step is to keep your garden free of debris, weak plants, weeds and mulch previously infected with pests or disease. Clear it out and clean it up! You can also bolster the nutrient density and condition of your soil, paving the way for plants to grow up big, strong and more resistant to disease. Start with organic dirt, compost and natural fertilizers and mulches. For example, seaweed mulch provides enriching minerals and repels slugs.

>> Insect Attraction The garden environment is naturally alive with insects. The trick is in knowing which are harmful and which are going to devour those nasty cutworms for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Garden.org has a pest control library complete with a “Bug Mug Photo Index” to help you know your bugs. You can then turn your beds into happy habitats for a defensive line of ladybugs (eat aphids and whiteflies), nematodes (eat cutworms and beetles) and praying mantes (munch on most garden pests). Attract an army of good insects by installing a mini insectary of flowering plants designed to attract and harbor beneficial bugs. Soap and oil sprays are touted as the most effective homemade pesticides. A tablespoon of Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap, for example, added to water and sprayed directly on invaders can dissolve insects’ cuticles. To suffocate pests, include a cup of clean cooking oil and apply once every seven days. Just keep in mind that these will kill ALL insects, good or bad.

>> Keep It Simple There are many tricks to maintaining a vibrant garden and keeping out pests. In the end, balance and simplicity are best. Your vegetables, flowers, herbs and fruits aspire to greatness. You just have to nurture, watch, and grow with them. May your beds be fruitful and your sky full of ladybugs.

crambled eggs with bacon, hash browns and toast are still the most popular breakfast foods in the United States. But there is an abundance of sugar-rich foods that continue to dominate our breakfast tables. From cereal to doughnuts to syrup, breakfast undeniably has a sweet side. My mother always valued a substantial breakfast, whether sweet or savory. I still crave French toast swimming in honey and cinnamon and delicate crepes filled with strawberry preserves and powdered with sugar. As an adult, I have discovered that the fewer nectarous delights I eat, the less I crave sweets. With just a few ingredient tweaks as well as attention to nutrition, convenience and flavor, I have learned how to turn a sugarsaturated breakfast into a flavorful nutritive start to my day.

>> A Better Bowl of Mush I grew up in Texas where Southernstyle grits, oatmeal and Cream of Wheat were breakfast staples. They were also commonly paired with generous amounts of raisins, butter, sugar and milk. Oats, as well as brown, multi-grain and black rice, are full of healthy

fiber and are typically gluten-free. In many Asian countries, porridge and rice are fundamental breakfast foods, but they are served savory with a variety of side dishes, such as dried fish and pickled radishes. I suggest replacing that brown sugar with a sauté of caramelized onions, peppers and mushrooms sprinkled with shredded raw cheddar cheese.

NEW YORK SOUNDS SO FAR AWAY, EVEN OVER THE PHONE. By TOBY REYNOLDS

“I’m between shows and have some errands to run,” Steven says. “So this is actually a perfect time to call.” I’m left to imagine what errands he’s running, but as we talk I hear the thrum of traffic, of tires on pavement and the sound of neighboring engines, the occasional blare of a horn. At certain points during our journey there are people; children or teens, as if passing a popular hangout. And there are adult voices as well, loud

with apparent excitement. It’s 5 p.m. in New York, and I can almost see the crowds, the marquee lights, the suits and ties, the glamorous gowns. Men and women lining up for the show, a show where, once again, actor Steven Booth will step onto the stage. Broadway, I smile to myself. Steven Booth made it to Broadway. And from one artist to another, I couldn’t be more excited for him.

“But still,” he says, “I never really thought, ‘I could do this for a living.’” It was early in his acting career that I met and shared a stage with Steven. We’d both gotten parts in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Fiddler on the Roof. That was some 16 years ago at what was then the Lake City Playhouse in Coeur d’Alene. Steven laughs over the phone. “I still tell stories about that show,” he says, referring to a particularly comical night of our Shakespearian production. “So do I,” I say, and we laugh together as we cannot help but recount the evening. It reminds me just how much I miss the stage. How I plan to get back to it … someday.

After Fiddler, Steven and I went our separate ways. I went on to do two more shows and soon found myself in Afghanistan carrying an M4 assault rifle for two tours. Steven caught the theater bug and found himself in a college theater program while continuing to audition for as many shows as he could. “But still,” he says, “I never really thought, ‘I could do this for a living.’” It seemed he was just going through the motions. He knew he liked theater but hadn’t truly considered making it his career. He didn’t know it was actually possible. One day he sees there are open auditions for a professional production of Avenue Q, and he says to himself, “I’m going to be in that show.” “That show got me in,” he says. “I’ve been very lucky.” In 2015 Steven played the lead role in the Broadway production of Kinky Boots, for which he received

He currently appears in Broadway’s School of Rock, in an admittedly smaller role. “But,” says Steven, “there are very few adult roles [in this show].” And he’s quite happy about landing one of them. The life of an actor is a hard one. Steven admits to that. There are challenges, hardship between shows, self-doubt and even the doubts of

others. But his own life stands for him a testament that it is possible to live his dreams, to succeed in his chosen career. And, recently married, he now has the support of his beautiful new bride. Together, they discuss a bright future. A future filled with possibilities and, I’ll bet, Broadway lights and thunderous applause. N

“I love your photographer,” she says, speaking of Benjamin Powell, when I hand her the latest issue of Nspire Magazine. It is this same openness and sincerity that warms our entire conversation. An award winning author and nutritional visionary, Ann Louise has written more than 30 books, including New York Times bestsellers Before The Change and The Fat Flush Plan. My intent in meeting with her—I think—is to discuss how the artistic side of writing has influenced her work. However, I

come to understand that it is not the writing, not the art, that inspires her. It’s her passion for people and for life that motivates her. Ann Louise says little about herself except to reference others, special influences, those she respects and those she loves. She speaks fondly of mutual acquaintances, and her hospitality is genuine. She’s a people person in the truest sense of the word, and because of that she’s made it her mission to share with people everything she possibly can about living a healthy lifestyle.

Culture An evening of

nticipation overwhelmed me aas I thought about the unique night ahead. My family and I were going to experience the Festival at Sandpoint for the first time. Since 1983, this non-profit festival has hosted its renowned summer concert series in the casual and relaxed atmosphere of Memorial Field. We were attending the grand finale concert “Viva Italia,” featuring the Spokane Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Maestro Gary Sheldon. The classical portion of the program was to include the “Roman Carnival Overture” by Berlioz, “Dance of the Hours” by Ponchielli and Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony. Jazz pianist Vadim Neselovskyi would also perform at the concert.

and listening to “Madame Butterfly” by the fire. We also journeyed to Salt Lake City to see “The Magic Flute” and Seattle for “Fiddler on the Roof.” So I was excited about the opportunity to give my kids a taste of culture, especially in this atmosphere, under the stars. As we walked onto Memorial Field, we were enticed by mouthwatering aromas. Food booths were set up near the entrance, teasing our taste

buds and luring us away from the main attraction. We hovered there, wondering whether to feast first or find a spot to set up our lawn chairs and blankets. Reason won out and my family and I scoured the lawn for the perfect place to view the concert. My son spied a shiny red Ferrari and immediately gravitated toward it, making our decision easy. We laid down our belongings and gazed around us.

I fondly reminisced about my introduction to culture. Growing up in the small town of Grangeville, I wasn’t naturally exposed to music, plays or art, but my parents made sure my siblings and I experienced them. I remember them taking me to the play “Oliver Twist” in Lewiston 48 NSPIREMAGAZINE.COM

AS DARKNESS ENVELOPED US, I CLOSED MY EYES AND EMBRACED THE EXPERIENCE, LETTING THE MUSIC WASH OVER ME.

More than 50 local wineries were behind us offering complimentary tastes of their finest vintages. Visitors crowded together, swirling and tasting the wine. People didn’t seem to mind the long lines or jostling into for position. They smiled and laughed as we joined them. The sun was shining, the wine was plentiful and I couldn’t help but relish the experience of being outdoors at one of the largest wine-tasting events in the Northwest. There was a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose. These were fellow wine connoisseurs and want-to-be connoisseurs. It was the ideal complement to the grand finale concert. Finally, we rallied the kids and hurried over to the food booths. I chose pulled pork tostadas and the kids devoured pizza and hot dogs. The fresh air had given all of us big appetites. As we settled back onto our chairs

and blankets, the first chords of the Spokane Symphony Orchestra sounded. I looked at the dusky blue sky and noticed one twinkling star. The music flowed gracefully through the crowd and gradually it became quiet. There was something magical about gazing at the sky with the music surrounding us, taking us to faraway places. A few little girls near us added to the entertainment by dancing merrily to the tunes. Their mothers quietly shushed them . Then, a surprising thing happened. We heard chirping. I looked up and saw two nests filled with baby birds. They seemed to want to be part of the action. As the music peaked, the chirping rose, forming a beautiful duet in the night. My sister-in-law, a Sandpoint local, said they were ospreys and were famous in Sandpoint. There were even webcams attached to the two osprey nests, giving the world a private view of the baby birds. I chuckled to

myself. What a great place. Where else could you go to a concert and hear the chirping of baby ospreys? As darkness enveloped us, I closed my eyes and embraced the experience, letting the music wash over me. I felt calm and peaceful. The events of the past week flickered out of my consciousness and I thoroughly enjoyed the music. Life can get so hectic and overwhelming. Music, birds, food, wine, stars and the great outdoors. These are the experiences that make one glad to be alive. But the night wasn’t over yet. Bright, flashy fireworks lit up the sky as the Spokane Symphony finished its last song. I looked over at my children. Even though they were rubbing their eyes and were obviously fighting sleep, they were completely entranced by the music and fireworks. I knew they would never forget this night. A little bit of culture goes a long way. N

ihad the good fortune of getting to know some inspiring homeowners for this edition’s architectural series. Each had undertaken major projects to build their dream homes on North Idaho’s glistening lakes. Expertly crafted and beautifully designed, these homes were considerable investments, no question. But it is clear the real investment is not in the home itself. The real investment is in family.

It’s why Steve and Cinthia built a grand lodge on a secluded lake in Harrison, why Rick and Robyn transformed an aging cabin into a six-bedroom retreat on Lake Pend Oreille and why Pat and Sandy joined two penthouse condos to create 12,000 square feet of spectacular space on Lake Coeur d’Alene. Family. Friends. Good times and great memories. These, they all agree, are the things that matter.

he narrow gravel road had ruts so deep I held my breath over every one I failed to dodge. Carved into the hillside and hugging one of Coeur d’Alene’s pristine chain lakes, this is the only road leading to Steve and Cinthia Rice’s home. I splashed and bumped along for three foggy wet miles until finally I peaked the last hill. There on the other side, near the sandy shoreline, sat the10,000-square-foot home I had come to see. Surrounded by a boathouse, two cabins and 688 acres of storybook serenity, this lake retreat was worth the trek. I imagined Steve and Cinthia felt the same every time they ventured away from this slice of paradise.

>> Making a change The Rices moved to the lake last fall. They were drawn here for obvious reasons. It’s private and beautiful. But more than that is the promise of a slower more deliberate life. As business owners, with intense professional lives, the Rices grew keenly aware of how fast time was moving. Nothing emphasized that more than an advertisement Steve saw for MasterCraft boats. It became the impetus for the move. “It said ‘You have 18 summers with your kids. How many do you have left?’” With two teenage boys, the math was easy and so was the decision to leave Post Falls and slow things down in the sleepy town of Harrison. Such a move does not come without challenge, though.

A PRIVATE PARADISE “There is an element of sacrifice to living in God’s country with complete peace and solitude,” Cinthia says. “We get the beauty and privacy, but it’s not very convenient to town. However, one lives in town and has all the conveniences but not the privacy and beauty. I guess it’s what you are willing to embrace and willing to sacrifice.”

>> Building a dream Knowing the sacrifice would be huge for their sons and in many ways for themselves, the Rices made sure they had everything they needed on their property, including an offsite office so the couple could run their business at home but not in their home.

When they bought the lake property it was the site of an old dude ranch that hosted fishermen and hunters for the better part of 60 years. The Rices kept two cabins, converting one into an office, and tore down an aging lodge. Inspired by the idea of a lodge and all of its charm, they modeled their home after one. The concept applies mainly to their greatroom, with its 32-foot pitched ceiling, floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, massive timber trusses and three-story wall of windows that overlooks the lake. It’s open and airy and feels every bit like a grand rustic lodge. The rest of the home’s dimensions were dictated by the greatroom—not because the Rices wanted a huge house. The five-bedroom, eight-

bathroom home has a video room, game room, billiard room, theater room, exercise room, sports court, swim spa and sauna— all indoors. “Knowing winters in North Idaho can be long and dark, we wanted plenty to do inside when weather demanded it,” Steve says. “With this winter’s early freeze, we had the additional amenity of ice skating on the lake—even a bit of snowboarding behind the ATVs.”

>> Finding perfection The Rices are still getting to know their new home and the new lifestyle they have adopted. But they know this: They have built far more than a house. They relax and enjoy the outdoors more than ever before. They spend

less money on food, entertainment and clothing. They reflect more on life and how they are spending it. And they enjoy more time — a different kind of time — with their kids. It had been a few weeks since I visited the Rices when I received an email from Steve. Because of the cabins and boathouse on the property, the County let the Rices officially name the private road leading to their home. They chose Shangri-La Lane. “If you're familiar with the novel, you'll understand why,” Steve says. I do. And despite all the bumps and splashes getting to this magical place on the lake, there just isn’t anything more fitting.

The cabin sat on a floodplain and couldn’t be insured, leaving the couple no choice but to rebuild. For the Dillons, it was an opportunity. It gave them a chance to build a place for their friends and family to enjoy. The couple built a six-bedroom, three-story home to accommodate guests. And to make sure their parents could enjoy all that the lake house offered, they added an elevator. “At the time both of our parents needed help going up and down stairs,” Robyn said. But the Dillons didn’t just put in an elevator. They made it a major design element and one of the most talked about features of their vacation home, second only to the jaw-dropping view of the lake. The elevator stands prominently in the entryway. “I wanted something different,” Robyn said. “Not just an elevator in the corner.” The pneumatic elevator looks and works like the tubes at the bank drive-through.

obyn and Rick Dillon took a boat ride around Lake Pend Oreille on their 30th wedding anniversary five years ago. They admired the scenery and the beautiful homes that line the shoreline of Idaho’s largest and deepest lake.

But it was a 1957 cabin on the north end that grabbed Robyn’s attention. The home, she thought, would make a great vacation spot for the family. Rick agreed. So they bought it. “I absolutely loved the location,” Robyn says. “I thought we’d do a little remodel. But we ended up tearing the whole thing down, which was not my intention.”

“It basically pushes the elevator up with air pressure and lets it down by releasing the air pressure,” said Tim Boden of Boden Mountain Architecture, who designed the home. “It is designed to be energy efficient because no energy is required to go down.” Unlike traditional elevators, this one didn’t need a large mechanical area, so it could be located anywhere in the house. And the steel and glass tube fits the contemporary styling of the home. “At the time, I think we were the only ones in Idaho with an elevator like this,” Robyn says. “We had so much fun creating this house.”

NO ORDINARY RENOVATION P

at and Sandy Volkar love when family comes to visit. But with six children and eight grandchildren, hosting gatherings at their condo on Lake Coeur d’Alene was a bit of a challenge. As spacious as their penthouse was at 6,000 square feet, they had only one guestroom. The other two rooms housed the master bedroom and an office. So when the penthouse next door went on the market, the Volkars didn’t let an opportunity pass. They bought it and gained another 6,000 square feet. “We have a large family and wanted the extra room,” Sandy said. “We were excited when this became available.” So was architect Monte Miller. Miller and the Volkars go back nearly 10 years. He worked with the couple to renovate their original condo at The Terraces, a landmark on Lake Coeur d’Alene. Architect MILLER STAUFER ARCHITECTS

When he got the phone call about a remodel, Monte thought the Volkars wanted to update their place. “No, they were talking about expanding,” he said. “It was a fun phone call.” With Monte’s positivity and Sandy’s enthusiasm, the two made a formidable team. It helped that they both speak the same design language. So the plan to renovate the condo was easily hatched. But make no mistake. This was no ordinary remodel. The condo was gutted to create a blank canvas for Monte and Sandy’s ideas. “The first question was how to join the (condos),” Monte says. The wall was a solid concrete, heavily reinforced shear wall and a real effort to saw through, cut into manageable sections and haul off. Once the proposed 9-by-9 foot opening was structurally approved and cut, the rest of the work could begin. That work included installing a 6-foot-wide pivoting door made of

wood, metal and translucent glass; a 20-foot-high fireplace that is open on three sides and covered in a wavepattern plaster; and a suspended ceiling with drop layers of beams that are lit with LED to illuminate each ceiling bay. The original 9-foot ceiling was raised to 12 feet to allow for the suspension and a 20-foot-high skylight was added. The condo was finished last October, so the Volkars haven’t had the opportunity to spend much time in the new space. But they are looking forward to having family and friends out this summer to enjoy their expanded home on the lake. “I loved doing this,” Sandy said, admitting she misses the work. “My project’s over, now what am I going to do?” She laughs at the thought. I laugh, too, because as I gaze out at the amazing view of the lake and those comfy sofas on the balcony, I know exactly what I would do. N

LIGHTING IS OFTEN OVERLOOKED, YET IT IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL ELEMENTS IN HOME DESIGN.

Alone it can create a vibe, evoke feelings, even enhance your appearance — or detract from it. You might say you know good lighting when you feel it. But the actual fixtures themselves can be just as interesting as the glow they cast. Glass pendant lanterns, stained-glass chandeliers, handcrafted antler masterpieces. Lighting is art. It is function. It is essential. And it can make or break a room. We asked the experts how they use lighting to accentuate a home. Their approach is, as you might expect, illuminating.

space and provide enough ambient lighting without the glare of exposed light bulbs. The solution: a 186-pound Meyda Tiffany stained-glass chandelier that hangs prominently in the entryway. Dianne mirrored the look on the opposite end of the main floor with a second chandelier above the dining table. Getting the lighting just right was an effort. Dianne and the homeowner, who is an architect, mocked up what they wanted, got on ladders to make sure the dimensions were exact for the space and then commissioned the 6-foot 6-inch diameter chandeliers. It took about 10 months to build the lights.

>> Go for the gusto Don’t just fill space. Make a statement. When you walk into this Hayden Lake home, you step into a grand entryway with an 18-foot ceiling made of quarter-sawn white oak. The challenge for lighting consultant Dianne Ansbaugh was to

illuminate this vast space without disturbing the beautiful straightgrain pattern woodwork. “I couldn’t bear the thought of cutting holes to place recessed cans,” she said. So she didn’t. Working with the homeowner, she found a way to preserve the wood, add volume to the

>> Go with the flow Use lighting to define and transition Walls, colors and furniture are common ways to define space in a home. But an overlooked yet equally effective way is to use lighting, interior designer Lynn Fleming says. Lynn incorporated about 30 different light fixtures, both LED tape and art lighting as well as chandeliers and sconces, to define space in her client’s 4,800-squarefoot home on the Spokane River.

She had to seamlessly link a grand entryway, wide hallways and large open living spaces on each of the two floors. She chose timeless, simple and classic fixtures, complementing her client’s bright Northwest coast palette and character. “The workhorse of good lighting is what you do not see. The art lights, LED tape under cabinets, wall washers outside, under-cabinet LEDs,” she says, emphasizing that decorative lighting is a supporting role to the functional design. “Light is a paint brush and decorative fixtures are the final flourish.”

Lynn worked closely with her client to pick the more ornamental lighting. They started with the kitchen, choosing two glass lanterns to fill the space over the kitchen island. Lynn balanced the look in the dining space with an understated single shade chandelier and two matching wall sconces. The complementary fixtures give separation between the two adjacent spaces but also keep them congruent. “I will pick lighting any day over any other material,” Lynn says. "Without light, both the inanimate and animate appear less vibrant."

You wouldn’t think the two styles work together. They do. In fact many of Jim’s clients incorporate their antler lighting with all kinds of decorative styles. His biggest market is New York City, where he mainly sells high-gloss white-painted chandeliers to apartment and condo owners. He describes two kinds of clients: the kind who likes antlers and the kind

who instead of seeing antlers sees curves and nuances of the shapes. “They’re looking at more of the beauty of it,” Jim says. Jim is more focused on the craftsmanship of his lights; he leaves the interior design to his customers. It’s that craftsmanship — the authenticity, artistry and attention to detail — that sets him apart and draws clients from all over. Using real antlers, Jim carefully wires each fixture, hiding the wires inside the antlers for a clean,

authentic look. He spends the most time arranging the antlers so the piece fits together well and is proportionate. Once he builds the fixture, he then takes it apart to drill holes and install the wiring. Then he rebuilds it. After that comes the detailing process, filling in the holes to match the bumpy texture of the antler and painting the piece to replenish the color that the human eye sees when looking at antlers.

The designer asked Jim to make him rustic, bleached-out and weathered chandeliers. “I didn’t build them rustic enough for him,”Jim says with a laugh. “He said ‘no, rustic, rustic, rustic.’” So Jim went back and roughened them up some more. The designer ended up pairing his rustic chandeliers with dark Queen Ann-style furniture. “I thought, ‘This can’t look right,’” Jim says. “It’s stunning what people can do.” N

till, we are thankful to be strapped into the secure system of lines, pulleys and carabiners all handled deftly by our guides. Amazingly, during the rides, each of these tree pilots has one of my two youngest snug to their chest. Not only are our guides handling a full crew of six adult zipliners, they’ve got my fledgling brood held close and enthralled. I trust them implicitly. I thought it would be the catch of my breath or crater in my stomach that would make my first time at Timberline Adventures memorable.

Instead, it is the familiarity and sense of home in the canopy full of long green needles and hushed tranquility. The groundcover has turned aureate and crimson in late Autumn sweetness. Waves of a non-existent ocean keep washing over us in the rise and fall of branches, sweeping strongly first at a distance, ebbing closer until the forest around us swoons. I swoon. My boys set their heels against the outer circumference of the scaffolding, stretch their arms to the firmament and lean back at 45-degree angles into the surrounding openness.

Some form of archaic anamnesis takes over. We are completely at ease swinging through the trees.

“Look, mom!” they exhale as they let the cables bear their weight and the forest take their fears.

My 9-year-old tucks into his guide’s experience, green eyes animated with expectation, and the uninhibited ‘yahoooo!’ he lets out for the first 20 feetchurns my own anticipation until—just silence— the two of them riding out into air. For two hours we laugh, joke, clipin and fly. We talk about how we could live forever in the trees and dare each other to let go in stages. First one hand, then two hands off the bar, then launching backward into the expanse.

“Did you see me, Mom?!” my oldest buzzes. Some 450 vertical feet at its precipice and over 1,000 feet along its length, we cruise the seventh and last zipline like spies on a mission overtop the unsuspecting populace below. We do not want it to end. We needn’t have worried, however, for even the final descent from the treetops back to the earth is a 15foot rappel. Trusting our guides once more, we grip our safety lines and step off the edge to be caught and lowered to the ground. Then, we haul our ropes and gear over our shoulders, gulp great swigs of water

from the weathered blue cooler and grin uncontrollably. Riding back to town in the tall white van that inaugurated our journey, all three of my boys plead with me: “Please, Mom, can we do it again?! This is the best thing we’ve ever done!” Soon, the croon of the winding road settles them into exhaustion and the adrenaline wears down to butterscotch scented dreams. N

PARADISE

once watched a program about Lord Howe Island in Australia; its white sand beaches, fabulous day hikes and snorkeling the world’s southern-most coral reef in the earth’s cleanest and clearest ocean. It has world-class bird watching and fishing and an impressive collection of endemic plant species. There is no crimeon the island, the transportation mode of choice is the bicycle and the official school uniform is barefoot. The weather, like everything else here, is idyllic. It is known to be one of the cleanest places on Earth, with no air or sea pollution and no litter. There are no snakes, stingers or sand flies, and with the limited number of vehicles and 25 mph speed limit, children are safe to roam. Twenty years after watching that program, we stepped off the plane and into paradise. We were greeted by Julie, the owner of Ebbtide Apartments, where we had booked

a cottage for the week. She helped us get our bearings on the island and swung us by a store to pick up incidentals before getting settled in. Then, Julie gave us a tour of what she called the ‘CBD,’ Lord Howe’s central business district,which consisted of a fishmonger, co-op health food store, post office/gift shop, small general store and a restaurant and pub. Because visitors are discouraged from hiring car service, we rented cruiser bikes with baskets to get around the 7-by-1.7 mile island. We checked into our cottage and Julie advised us there are no locks for the doors. They weren’t necessary as there is no crime on the island. She showed us the guest lounge that had games, books and an honesty box that was filled with beer, frozen fish and other goodies. “Help yourself and write down what you take in the notebook,” she said. “We’ll settle up when you check out.”

Lidgebird and Mount Gower. Mount Gower can only be hiked with a guide. We’d booked that tour for later in the week. It began to rain as we continued the hike to the summit of Malabar at 685 feet. Despite the clouds, we could still make out Soldier’s Cap and the Admiralty Islands below. We were enthralled with Roach Island’s natural arch and imagined kayaking beneath it through the aqua blue water. Then, remembering Julie’s warning, we began scurrying down the slick path before dark settled in.

Our cabana had a covered deck and opened up to a lush garden of papaya (pawpaw), blooming hibiscus and banana plants. A trail led from the gardens through a banyan tree forest to Ned’s Beach below. Anxious to experience some of the island’s top-rated trails, we dumped our bags and set off to hike to the summit of Malabar peak before the sunset. We had been warned not to be out after dark on the trails. The island has zero light pollution so it getsdark. We wandered along Settlement Beach and through the cow pastures before climbing one of the staircases that ascends to Kim’s Lookout at 597 feet. From the lookout we gazed over the pristine reef and beyond to the island’s highest peaks: Mount

Back at the cabana, we donned headlights and wandered down the road about a half of a mile to a local restaurant. Our accommodations were located on the appropriately named Muttonbird Lane. On our walk to the restaurant, we were taken aback by the unfamiliar wails and screeching calls from the Muttonbirds lining the street and woods. By day, these birds soar beautifully near the cliffs by the seashore as they are feeding. In the evenings, however, they come inland to mate in holes they dig in the earth. These kooky birds do not walk well. Under the dark sky their black feathers are camouflaged leaving just the sight of their yellow eyes and the sound of them waddling clumsily to get out from underfoot. We had a good laugh over our reaction to the unexpected drones of the Muttonbirds lining Muttonbird Lane. After dinner, the owner of the restaurant offered us a lift home in his car, which is apparently typical here.

for ringing in the new year. Near the jetty in town, the islanders fashioned a grass hut of sorts out of pallets and straw, complete with surf boards protruding from the top and Happy New Year spray-painted onto plywood. At the stroke of midnight, the hut was torched and a beachside bonfire party ensued. It was a raucous New Year’s bash. Under the light of the moon and stars, with the silhouette of Mount Gower and Mount Lidgebird in the backdrop, we would be among the first in the world to be greeted by the sunrise of the new year.

The next few days were filled with snorkeling the reef. We explored Erscott’s Hole with Staghorn coral, double-header wrasse, spangled emperor and more. At Erscott’s Reef, we discovered dense and diverse coral patches including bright blue and purple coral. In Comet’s Hole, a deep coral hole, we swam with subtropical fish, black stingrays, a shark and a clownfish. The Horseshoe was a shallow reef dominated by neon colored corals and mesmerizing butterfly fish. Each place we snorkeled was diverse and stunningly beautiful, full of surprises and wonder. After each day in the water, we enjoyed the culinary pleasures of the island with fresh lunches such as smoked salmon sandwiches with beetroot and other seafood delicacies. We quickly learned the system of placing an order with the town

fishmonger by midday, so when we returned from our adventures we’d find freshly caught to-order fish in our refrigerator. Since there are no locks on the doors, we’d simply place our order in town, tell the fishmonger where we were staying, and leave some cash in the fridge. The fishermen would catch what we’d requested, deliver to our cabana and leave the correct change. We prepared barbequed Kingfish, fresh pasta with olives and sundried tomatoes from the co-op and squid sautéed with chili peppers. On New Years Eve we dined with a couple from Melbourne whom we’d met while snorkeling. We shared a grilled Kingfish sandwich and fries and ordered Mojitos to celebrate. While Sydney was preparing to launch a pyrotechnic extravaganza over the harbor, the youth of Lord Howe Island had their own tradition

When the day finally came for us to hike Mount Gower, we were led by a man who was a conservationist, life-long resident, council member and had a wealth of knowledge. He taught our group about endemic plant and bird species, and island conservation policies. We learned that the island has recorded 241 species of indigenous plants of which 113, or 47 percent, are found nowhere else in the world. There are more seabird species breeding on LHI than anywhere in Australia; that’s 32 of the 207 different bird species on the island. Sixty percent of the more than 1,600 terrestrial insects are endemic to the island. The diverse hiking group soaked up the knowledge and enjoyed the fast pace our leader maintained. The trail offered a series of ropes to keep hikers from falling off the steep cliffs and to guide them through the misty forest on the upper slopes of the mountain. At the summit, we happened upon several Lord Howe Island wood hens. These flightless birds are an endemic species saved from extinction by a local conservation effort. The views over the island were breathtaking and encompassed adjacent Mount Lidgebird, the sparkling blue waters of the reef, and the entire island

below us. A short way down from the summit, we saw Balls Pyramid to the southeast, a peculiar pinnacleshaped rock mound jutting 1,800 feet above the sea from the ocean floor. Located about 14 miles offshore, Balls Pyramid is the world’s tallest sea stack and the site of some of Australia’s most remarkable diving. Balls Pyramid is also home to some rare species including the Phasmid, a large stick insect that was thought to be extinct until recently rediscovered there. The Mount Gower hike was well worth the effort, and a cold brew at The Anchorage was deemed to be a fitting reward for the grueling day. We spent the next day tasting the island’s delicacies and intermittently swimming, biking and contemplating how we would spend our last morning on this glorious island. There are many walking treks on the island and expansive beaches where solitude, sand and shorebirds are the only company you will find. We picked a few beautiful walks and tried not to lament over the trails that we didn’t find time to experience. We didn’t kid ourselves into thinking we’d return to complete the list. It was no easy feat to get here. N

very year, a beautiful love story plays out on the waters of Idaho. It’s a classic boy-meetsgirl story. She knows she has reached the age when she is ready to meet her soul mate and create a life together. He has been waiting patiently to meet “the one” but nothing has felt quite right. Then one day, while swimming in Killarney Lake, she sees him through the crowd. Their eyes lock. She knows instantly she has just met her mate. They quickly glide toward each other and begin swimming side by side while they wildly preen their feathers…. Yes, this is the beginning of the alluring courtship ritual of tundra swans. The immense love these partners show one another could be a lesson to their human counterparts. When tundra swans decide to take a partner, it is for life. They will spend their lives together traveling hundreds, if not thousands of miles,

ON KILLARNEY LAKE always close to one another as they migrate to their breeding grounds in Alaska from their wintering areas along the west coast of the continental United States. The Coeur d’Alene basin happens to be along their route, which is why they can be seen in March on their way north and then in October and November heading South. About 4,000 tundra swans migrate through North Idaho, but their populations use to be much greater. After the turn of the century they were intensely hunted until conservation efforts were able to support a recovery. However, tundra swans were then faced with another hurdle: lead poisoning as a result of unabated silver mining waste. Swans are severely affected by toxins in the sediments because they feed on tubers and roots within marshes. It is estimated that 80 percent of the waters in the Coeur d’Alene basin are polluted with heavy metals.

then tuck its head in close to its chest and observe its partner admiringly as they continue to preen. At this point they start to move in closely touching chests and twisting their elegant, slender necks. You may even observe them arching their neck, making a heart-shape as they stare into each other’s eyes. It is around this point the birds will “do the deed” (which by the way is done much more often than needed for reproduction and thought by scientists to maintain strong bonds between pairs). After the consummation, the real beauty takes place. The two birds will float adjacent to each other and almost rise out of the water by paddling vigorously so that they are flying across the water all while looking at each other. Fortunately, great strides have been made by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Ducks Unlimited to establish swan habitats in healthy marshes and lakes. With the help of decoys and tempting seed-bearing grasses, the swans are attracted to these safe waters. And this is where we can now see the avian affairs unfold.

Their mate-for-life commitment to one another is just a small part of a swan’s love relations, which is likely why they have been synonymous with devotion and marriage for millennia.

t’s seldom one seeks out life’s messy moments. On the contrary, these are the kind of moments most of us try desperately to avoid; the kind where drugs have strangled a once clean lifestyle and stripped a bank account of every cent; the kind where conflict causes family dissention and plants a stake between loved ones; the kind where poor decision-making has landed someone behind the steel bars of legal confinement with a long-shot at seeing themselves on the other side. These moments — these painstaking, gut-wrenching, heart-

stopping moments — are the ones Pastor Tim Remington anxiously seeks out, incessantly hungry to find one more individual looking for a second chance. This was his mission when he planted The Altar Church in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on October 10, 1993. And, more than 20 years later, despite a multitude of challenges, to include being the target of a premeditated shooting, this is the mission Pastor Tim still fights for. You’ll find Pastor Tim at his church on Sundays and perhaps many other days of the week. But it’s not the only

place where he helps the community. He’s served on over 17 boards in the area and currently sits on the Christian Community Coalition, Set Apart Ministries and, the Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Program. The Altar Church and Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Program [two separate, but mutually beneficial, non-profits] are direct answers to that need, and it’s been beautiful to see the lives that have been transformed through them.” M.J. Vann knows this better than most. As a member of The Altar Church for the past five years, she’s had the opportunity to see Pastor Tim preach every Sunday with passion and conviction at the prospect of delivering a message that will resonate in the hearts of those WINTER/SPRING 2015 87

battling life’s greatest woes. Vann, a cognitive self-change counselor in the Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Program, has had the privilege of seeing that resonation take place; these messy lives dramatically turned around. “I help evaluate individuals who are looking to enter the Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Program,” she explains. “as well as assist in the jail ministry, where we seek those who are facing jail and look for a way to enroll them in the program. To date, nearly 1,700 individuals have graduated from the Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Program and been given that second chance, thanks to Pastor Tim’s vision.” Pastor Tim reminisces over the many examples of individuals who, once engulfed in drugs and despair, have graduated from the program and gone on to lead productive, healthy lives.

A .45 caliber handgun, nearly a dozen shots ﬁred and eight wounds later, Pastor Tim Remington continues to ﬁght for a community in need.

“To date,” he says. “The Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Program staff is made up of program graduates—nearly 30 of them. In the administration of The Alter Church is a beautiful, glorious woman who was found years ago in her home at 90lbs. entangled in drugs. I asked that she come join the rehab program; she willingly agreed, and her life was changed.” He also tells of a 17-year heroin addict. “After nearly eight months of rehab and life-changing resolve, she helped us start the Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Program. She’s a truly amazing woman.” This program, methodically planned out for each individual, with intensive, incremental steps to recovery, is facilitated by the support of those close to home. It’s for those in the community, by the community. And most of the graduates return to the community to give back once they’re done. “Before the program was built, we were sending people to one in San Diego for nearly $4,000 per month,” says Pastor Tim. “Now, we’re able to

enroll individuals at $2,500 for two to four months, and keep them close to home.” On March 6th, Pastor Tim was shot outside of his church. It shocked the Coeur d’Alene community. For many it was as if a part of their lifeline had been removed. As a man who leads a nationallyrenowned rehabilitation program for recovering addicts, sits on many of the community coalition boards, aids the local police department, saves the county insurmountable dollars in jail inmate costs, and never neglects an opportunity to lend a hand to someone in need, it’s clear Pastor Tim’s presence is invaluable. He brings with him an array of resources, a gamut of knowledge and sings a song of second chances. It would seem however, and it’s no surprise, that this man, so intent on providing second chances, has been given one of his own. N
