Newcastle University Boat Club Newsletter, March 2010 Recent Regattas The Taree Summer Regatta (Fri 15th - Sun 17th January) saw members of the NUBC travelling up to the lovely Manning River to compete. The University was well represented, entering many races over the course of the weekend. In the finals, the Women's C Grade Coxed Four (Alex McClelland, Kate Sands, Emma Mujic, Genevieve Buckton, c: Ellie Bollinger) took home some fashionable glass wear as a result of winning their event. The Men's Under 21 Pair (Jack Hanley and Karl Sailor) and the Uni/Hunter composite Men's Open Double Scull (Jason Nissen and Anthony Mujic) both placed second in their events. On the 6th-7th of February the NSW Rowing Championships were held at the Sydney International Rowing Centre. Anthony Mujic, as well as Merewether High's Alex McClelland, represented the NUBC in the events highly competitive single scull races. Merran Holmes flew the flag for the club at the Brisbane Waters regatta on February 28th, coming first in the Women's D Grade Single Scull. Well Done Merran! Our next door neighbours, Endeavour Rowing Club, held their regatta on the 14th of February. It was Valentine's Day, and the members of NUBC gave their sweet lovin' not to their significant others but instead lavished their attention on rowing and competition. Racing was difficult as temperatures increased, with races shortened in length, postponed, and eventually cancelled (after which the temperature fell significantly as the heavens opened with rain!). Despite the difficult conditions it was a successful outing for the NUBC with the following wins; Women's C Grade Coxed Four (Flowers, Sands, Mujic, Buckton c: Bissett) Men's A Grade Single (Anthony Mujic) Mixed Eight (Flowers, Mujic, Sands, Buckton, Pfennigwerth, Evans, Mujic, Elliot c: McCleod) Women's C Grade Quad Scull (Flowers, Sands, Mujic, Buckton) Women's D Grade Coxed Four (Gardiner, Maxwell, Mujic, Sands c: Flowers) Men's C Grade Double Scull (Jason Nissen and Anthony Mujic)

Recent Social Events Just before Christmas the NUBC travelled north to not-so-sunny-at-the-time Nelson Bay for its annual end of year celebration. After becoming heinously lost, the convoy eventually fund its way to the majestic Mount Tomaree which was quickly conquered in typical, athletic NUBC style and the views enjoyed by all. This was followed by delicious fish and chips at Aussie Bob's and ice cold beers and swimming (beers after swimming, I assure you) at Box Beach.
The NUBC have climbed a mountain
The New Year also saw the lovely ladies of the NUBC try out the cuisines offered at the Junction Hotel. Genevieve discovered how amazing corn bread is, Bronwyn confessed her undying love of corn bread above all else, and a great time was had by all (even thought the toilets at that place have see-through walls). O-Week and First Novice Day The last week of February was Orientation Week at the Uni. O-Week is the most important time of the year for the NUBC in terms of attracting new members. It is a time when the diverse range of Uni clubs and societies gather to try and recruit new members by coming up with the most
imaginative 'free stuff' to give away. We didn't have any free stuff to give, only kind smiles, warm hearts and promises that rowing was the coolest and greatest sport in the world. This seemed enough for many people, and a record number of interested new students signed up to give rowing a go (perhaps it was because we tried not to mention 5am training starts...). We introduced a new element to Boat Club stall this year by running an Erg competition with people's times ranked Top-Gear-style.

Bronwyn lures in unsuspecting novices at our O-Week stall...
Last Saturday saw an eager group of novice and new experienced rowers visit our Berry Park boat shed to have a go at our ROW101 Learn to Row course. It was a beautiful day for rowing, and after a short session the novices were beginning to pick up the rowing basics. A lot of fun was had by everybody, and thanks goes out to Bron's Dad for cooking a delicious BBQ for the worn-out novices, as well as to everyone that helped with coaching and coxing the new crews. The ROW101 course will continue for 2 more weeks on Saturday mornings, we hope to see you there!
