Newcastle University Boat Club Newsletter, February 2011 Recent Regattas Our neighbours at Endeavour Rowing Club recently held their regatta on Sunday the 6th of February. Hot weather and strong winds unfortunately meant the regatta was called off mid-way through events. Despite this, NUBC still found some success in earlier event. Most notably, club Prez Merran Holmes powered through the wind to win the Women's D Grade Single Scull. NUBC crews also placed second in the Mixed Quad Scull, Men's D Grade Single Scull (Brad Huggins), Men's Open Double Scull and the Women's C Grade Single Scull (Merran again!). The following weekend, the NSW Rowing Championships were held at the Sydney International Rowing Centre. Two of our rowers, Conrad Bond and Chris Maytom represented NUBC at this very competitive event in the Championship Men's Under 21 Single Scull and the Championship Men's Elite Lightweight Single Scull, respectively. Well done, guys! Conrad will also be competing in the Australian Rowing Championships, beginning on March 7th. Good Luck, Conrad! Most recently, NUBC headed back up to Taree to compete at the CDRA Championships, an event we look forward to every year. Racing was cancelled on the Sunday due to heat, meaning many championship events could not be raced. These events will be held at a later date. Despite the cancellation, NUBC crews still managed the following strong results: Men's C Grade Coxed Four 1st Place (Bond, Wilkinson, Maytom, Hanley c:Mujic) Men's D Grade Coxed Four 1st Place (Huggins, Flowers, Nissen, Mujic c:Flowers) Championship Women's Pair 1st Place (Mujic & Flowers) Championship Men's Quad Scull 1st Place (Bond, Huggins, Maytom, Hanley)

O-week/Row-101 Day Last week was Newcastle University's Orientation Week, which is a chance for NUBC to attract new members to the club through our O-Week stall. This year, we continued our new tradition of having an erg competition. O-Week attendees were encouraged to erg for 250 metres as fast as possible. There was a lot of tough competition, with the winners of the men's and women's competition receiving a free 2011 social membership. After our mammoth recruiting efforts at O-Week, we held the first of our annual Row-101 sessions on Saturday. All those who signed up at O-Week were encouraged to visit our shed and give rowing a try. We had an excellent turn out for the first session, with an eight and numerous fours and quads filled with new rowers. Learning to row definitely involves an overload of new
information, yet all the new rowers picked up the basics really quickly and had a lot of fun in the process! A great morning of the water was followed by a much earned BBQ.

We look forward to seeing you at training! Death Training All NUBC members, as well as new rowers, are encouraged to attend our weekly Death Training session. DT is held at the University Forum every Thursday at 6.30 pm. Death training focuses on strength and core exercises and is a really, really great workout. It is also cheap, at only $2 per person per week for hire of the room!
