Newcastle University Boat Club Newsletter, October 2010 Australian University Games After many months of strenuous and consistent (cough) training, 10 NUBC rowers and 1 NUBC social co-ordinator made the long trek to Perth to compete in Uni Games 2010 (Sep 27 - Oct 2). Competition was held over three days at the impressive Perth rowing centre, Champion Lakes. Boats were kindly rented to NUBC by UWA. Crews and results for Uni Games are below:
To fill in time between racing and training, the NUBC made sure they visited all the wonderful sights around Perth, under the watchful coordination of social co-ordinator Jed Dickson. Afternoons were spent wandering the streets of Perth and Fremantle, visiting the amazing Kings Park, eating gelato on Cottesloe Beach and being led astray by a slightly confused GPS.
Women's Coxed Four, 4th Place, A final (Emma Mujic, Bron Lever, Chez Lie, Genevieve Buckton and Ellie Bollinger)
Women's Lightweight Quad Scull, 4th Place, A final (Merran Holmes, Annelise Bissett, Bron Flowers, Ellie Bollinger & Bron Lever)

Tom Marshall and Andrew Evans - Men's Double Scull (3rd in B final), Men's Lightweight Single (5th in A final) and Men's Open Single (6th in A final)
Nights were spent checking out the local Perth nightlife, as well as other Uni Games competitors from around the country. Themed parties were hosted each night and the NUBC undoubtedly impressed the locals with our Beauty & the Geek, Retro Sports and Go For Gold: Gold Digger costumes - most of which just involved really tight and/or sparkly clothing from Chez's suitcase of wonders.
Men's C Grade Single Scull, 3rd Place (Jason Nissen) Women's C Grade Coxed Four, 3rd Place (Flowers, Sands, Mujic, Buckton, c: Lie) Women's D Grade Eight, 2nd Place (Lie, Rossi, Forrester, Fretwell, Flowers, Sands, Mujic, Buckton, c: Marshall)
Jed Dickson - NUBC Social Co-ordinator, ladies man, mans man, amazing dancer, criminal mastermind and all-round serial pest.
Uni Games 2010 was an amazing experience and great adventure for all involved. Not only did it allow the NUBC squad to compete against and watch some of the best rowers in the country, but we also met some great people and got to see more of our country. NUBC strongly encourages anyone interested in Uni Games 2011 to start training and be involved!
Spring Regatta Those brave souls who weren't physically and emotionally drained from Uni Games withdrawals made a 4 am trek down to SIRC on Saturday the 9th of Octobers to compete at Spring Regatta. The Australian Boat Race The Australian Boat Race is an attempt to replicate the excitement of the Boat Race in England between Cambridge and Oxford, and bring some more attention to rowing in Australia. Anyone wishing to see some seriously good rowing may be interested in checking this out, and Jack is organising a group to head down if enough people express interest: When: Sunday October 31, 2010 at 8:00am in Sydney. The participating universities are Sydney and Melbourne. The race is from Iron Cove to Riverview wharf. Since there is not much room at the finish line but a lot down at Iron Cove, the meeting place will be a park in Iron Cove called King George Park, in Balmain. After the race we can head out to a late breakfast in the city then vote on some Sydney activities to fill the rest of the day. Based on levels of interest an email will be sent out in the week prior to the race to organise car pools etc. If you are interested talk to Jack: mobile: 0448811876 email: jack.hanley90@gmail.com
