Newcastle University Boat Club Newsletter September 2009 Hi everyone, welcome to the first ever NUBC Newsletter. It‟s designed to keep everybody in the loop about important happenings in the club. I hope it functions as a way for people to submit info that they think NUBC members and the wider NUBC community should be hearing about. Depending on how much is going on newsletters may be bi-weekly to monthly. I encourage anyone involved in the NUBC to contact me via email if they would like anything included in the newsletter!
Trivia Night Friday August 21st saw NUBC hosting its inaugural Trivia Night; the aim being to raise funds for our Uni Champs team. The night was a great success in terms of attendance, fundraising and people called Jack getting “mags”. Thanks to the generous donations from local businesses and club members, many people (particularly the Buckton family) walked away with some fantastic prizes, with the team “Kevin Bacon Hearts Trivia” taking out top position (and many bottles of wine) at the end of the night. It was great to see The Bar on the Hill filled with NUBC family, friends and friends-of-friends; it contributed to a really social atmosphere on the night. At the end of competition, around $1800 had been raised to subsidise the expenses of the Uni Champs competitors, leaving all pleased and sure that NUBC Trivia shall return again soon!!!
Maddy, Genevieve, Oods and Brian (to name a few!!!) did a great job running the event.
Emma Mujic receives the coveted wooden spoon prize on behalf of her team!!!
The night could not have been possible without the help of The Bar on the Hill, local business sponsors (especially The Forum and Bunnings) and the NUBC members who helped out. Special thanks to the club members who sacrificed their time (and dignity?) to run the night, especially Brian Gray, who exercised his vocal stylings as our quizmaster extraordinaire. Below are a few memories from the night (more can be found on our Facebook page):

NUsport Awards Night The night of trivia mayhem also coincided with the decidedly more formal NUsport awards. Hosted by local celebrity Jim Callinan, the night honours the year‟s greatest contributions to university sport. The guest speaker was Heath Francis, the highly successful Novocastrian Paralympian. NUBC was a finalist for the Club of the Year Award; however the Women‟s Hockey Club deservingly took out the prize this year. Our departing president Stephen Pfennigwerth and past club coach and captain, Will O‟Reilly, were awarded University of Newcastle Colours. This award recognises outstanding contribution to the organisation and administration of University sport over a period of three or more years. Well done NUBC, Will and Steve for these achievements.
Executive Our AGM was held on the 5th of September. You can find the AGM report and minutes at nubc.info/agm. One of the more exciting parts of the meeting was the election of the 2010 NUBC executive, and the lucky winners are (opens envelope…)

Regattas Saturday the 12th of September was the Pre IV Regatta, the first of the season, and also the first of two NUBC regattas. It was a deliciously warm and sunny day for what was the first ever regatta experience for many of this years novices. The day ran smoothly under Ro‟s coordination, delegation and planning. It raised $400 for the club (before seat fees have been received). Margaret Mackenzie gave an excellent commentary of the days events, as well as providing a highly entertaining yet fear inspiring rebuke of a wayward recreational craft.
WO1x (Maddy Van Ewyk) WO2x (Van Ewyk, Thomas [Leichhardt]) Well done to everyone that raced on both days!
