KUMBURGAZ
Popular seaside town during the 1970’s, Kumburgaz’s popularity slowly declined because of water supply problems and intense traffic just nearby its shore. Today, the town is a labyrinth, of second class, gated summer condominiums. Sometimes, this love for enclosures can even be visible on the beach.

THE MUSEUM OF WATER CIVILIZATION
Commandited in 2006 by ISKI, the museum is located in the old Ottoman water pumping station bordering the Lake Durusu (Terkos). The project brilliantly conducted by Gülsün Tanyeli, Arzu Erdem, Cem Altun, Hüseyin Kahvecioğlu, Nurbin Paker and Saltuk Akatay, has been completed in 2009. Unfortunately, since then, due to ISKI’s lack of vision, the museum is still waiting for a curatorial programme.

THE THIRD AIRPORT
With a yearly capacity of 150 million passengers, Istanbul’s third airport will be the largest in the world. Currently under construction, nearby the northern forests and clear water resources, the project is responsible of a big part of the dust covering the city’s sky.

THE MOSQUE OF ŞAMLAR
Little village, surrounded by the urban area, a part of Şamlar disappeared under the waters of the Sazlıdere reservoir in 1996. Hopefully, the mosque of the village (which has more than probably been converted from a Greek building) has been preserved. Nevertheless, if the ‘’Kanal Istanbul’’ project is implemented one day, the future of the mosque and the village remains a question mark.

ATATÜRK OLYMPIC STADIUM
Built for an amount of 150 million Euros, the Atat端rk Olympic Stadium is located on a hill exposed to winds. Due to this characteristic and to its particular open form, the complex is often criticized by the users. Nevertheless, it is a good icon to remember the 5 unsuccessful attempts of Istanbul to host the Games.

THE KEMERBURGAZ AQUEDUCT
Implemented by Mimar Sinan in the 16th century, on the foundations of an ancient Byzantine aqueduct, the structure is an interesting limit. Coming from the city, once the aqueduct passed, a landscape of luxury gated communities reveal itself. In 2009, 600 gated communities were already recorded in metropolitan area.

THE THIRD BRIDGE
Started in 2013, the construction of the Third Bridge and its connection highways has already cost the life of more than 2 million trees in Istanbul’s northern forests. More will come, once the newly accessible areas will open to urbanization. This infrastructure is the key stone of an urban region under the making, which will, sooner or later, complete a full circle around the Marmara Sea.

POLONEZKÖY
Polonezköy is the souvenir of the past alliance between the Ottoman Empire and the Polish King in exile, during the War of Crimea. Nowadays, few original Polish families are remaining in the area. But on weekends, upperclass Istanbulites are enjoying ‘’Turkish breakfasts’’ in the half Disneyland, half Polish village. With the construction of the highways connecting to the 3rd bridge, Polonezköy will probably soon disappear among new gated communities.

Located in the district of Beykoz, by the Black Sea, the ancient fishermen village of Riva is under mutation. Deeply connected to the new highway network, the seaside town is currently reshaped by luxury real estate developments. ÇEKMEKÖY
The municipality of Çekmeköy defines itself as one of the ‘’greenest’’ municipalities of Istanbul. Despite this fact, the area continues to develop by extending into the forest zone, through the use of the 2B laws. Another interesting point about the municipality is that a major part of the town council is involved into real estate or construction activity.

ATAŞEHİR
Located at the junction of the First and the Second Bridges’ highways, Ataşehir looks like Le Corbusier’s ‘’Plan Voisin pour Paris’’. The area devoted to car traffic, will soon host the new International Finance Center, which is aiming to compete on the international scene with cities such as London and New York. Meanwhile, a replica of Architect Sinan’s ‘’Selimiye Mosque’’ of Edirne, is stuck between the highway and the residential towers of Ataşehir.

From Aydos, looking towards the East, you can perceive the smoky atmosphere of the Tuzla-GebzeDilovası industrial complex. Walking down Aydos gives you the sensation of a descent into hell.

After the first Grand Prix held in 2005 with great enthusiasm, the audience has not demonstrated big interest in this expensive event, the last Grand Prix has been cancelled in 2010 due to the lack of spectators.

DİLOVASI
Dilovası is out of Istanbul’s district. But arriving till Dilovası, is a ride an urban continuum. Beside the 200 heavy and light industrial complexes of Dilovası, the city hosts 20 thousand workers and 45 thousand inhabitants. The rate of Cadmium in Dilovası’s air is 30 times superior to the European regulations. And unfortunately, the city has the highest rate of cancer in Turkey. Definitely, Dilovası is the gate to hell.
